Dancing with the Stars Season 20, Week EIGHT – Let’s Discuss Tonight’s Show!! (Spoilers)
Theme of the week is America’s Choice. Theoretically. I mean, looking at Rumer’s songs I am skeptical. In my mind, how the judges behave tonight is a strong indicator of what will happen going forward, although we may not know it until tomorrow night ends. What do I mean? Well, sometimes you’re not sure of why they’re behaving in a given way until after an elimination – or after the MBT is handed out. If they continue to score Rumer appropriately, I would say she’s not going to win. If they massively overscore her, though, it doesn’t mean she’s going to win….it could also mean she’s in danger.
And that same rule applies to most of them. I think. It’s possible that they could start lowballing Riker and Nastia in an effort to give Rumer a better shot at getting votes under the theory of “everyone wants to vote for a winner”. That’s dangerous though, because I think both camps could rally and knock Rumer right out of the game. It’s really hard to say – but it will be interesting (and likely very aggravating) to watch.
T-minus 30 minutes…I need food and a nap. NYC is exhausting, ya’ll. 🙂
Julianne looks great. Love the dress, love the hair.
Yeah, Noah’s dance was a bit stiff, understandably. I don’t know if he’ll ever top last week.
Gee, guess Rumer is going last since she’s up in AllAccess. Huh.
Hmmm….Chris didn’t suck, but 34 out of 40?? Seems a bit….high. Does that mean they’ve reconciled themselves to him in the final, or that he’s going home?
Riker and Allison’s dance was really too fast and a tad jerky for me.
The judges are raving- except Len of course. I’m thinking the front runners are going to get high scores (whether they deserve it or not) to keep that clear demarcation between upper and lower tier dancers, which increase the odds that we lose Robert and Chris.
Yeah, that was not a 39 dance, ya’ll.
I’m tired. I missed the kiss. And Len was all nice after this dance. Weird. The judges give them a 33….which I think is probably fair.
Nastia is going to get the bad edit. Okay….later she will.
Oooo…nice Paso. Coulda a been a bit tougher in places. Len is going to hose them.
Derek does not look ridiculous, Jules. And I didn’t see out of sync. But I guess Rumer needs to be on top this week.
Hmmm…that dance was better than Riker’s and yet he was overscored. I wonder why?? Yeah, underscored relative to Riker for sure. Waiting for Rumer’s comeback arc and perfect 40. Whether she deserves it or not.
Val has a moment of self awareness. Amazing. Kudos for that. That will get them some votes.
Okay, that was a really good dance, I’m just not sure I saw a lot of Rumba content. That said, I’m generally not a rumba fan so I may not be the one to comment on content.
Oh boy, here comes the narrative about how much it means to Val. Every season. :::rolls eyes::: I don’t actually quibble with the 40. She’s tied for first place with Riker with Nastia only one point back. Perhaps she needs it to be safe from Robert and/or Chris and/or Noah.
Liked the salsa from Noah better than his first dance – little wobbly on the Emma Lift, but overall good choreo from Sharna with nice visuals.
I just burned all your crops. LOL.
I gotta hand it to Chris, He’s trying and he’s stepping it up!
Great dance from Riker. Loved it. I think he might just win this thing, if the producers let him.
Oh come on, Len. That was every bit as good as the rumba from Rumer.
Riker is a full 20 points ahead of Chris right now – this is what I was talking about with the two tiers of scores to try to ensure the good dancers stick around.
Lots of timing issues with Robert, and I think Jenna even lost track of him at one point. She’s not experienced dancing with a celeb. CAI is being VERY kind to Robert.
While I think that the concept and the choreo was AMAZING for Derek/Nastia/Sasha, I feel like she got off time in one or two spots. But it was certainly no worse than Riker’s first dance.
Again, Rumer does a good dance…yet I feel like there wasn’t a lot of content in that dance. It seemed very repetitive in a few spots and there was a spot where Val and Artem were dancing with each other and Rumer didn’t have much to do. And CAI just said “saved the best for last”. I cry bullshit. And of course she gets a 40. She must be in danger.
And Tom just said “Check the number and dial carefully”. Hmmmmm…..
In case you’re wondering, Nastia and Rumer are tied at the top with 117, and Riker is two points back at 115. Interesting how they don’t mention THAT at the end of the night.
Yohoo! This thread makes for “interesting” reading when I wake up Tuesday mornings. Nearly 20 to 1 in rainy South East England wish I could be there watching it live with you East Coasters. Hi to any South Caroliners (if any) had my best holidays in Myrtle Beach
@NathanUK No commitment. It’s the same time here in a “hahaha as if you know rainy” Northeast Scotland and I’ll be staying up to read the show.
Haha Mr A what town are you I live in Chatham (Medway, Kent must of heard about it) NE Scotland you couldn’t be any further away. Election week for us Brits. Sick of the media going on about it quite frankly Well is Tuesday now so in 2 days the polls open. What with Princess Charlotte and Election what a week for us Brits hey Mr A
LOL, Mr A. I love it “read the show” indeed. I’ll be doing that myself for the finale, of all things. At least I hope I will. I’ll be on a plane, and then in an airport awaiting a connecting flight, on my way to London.
@Nathan UK, I’m from SC 🙂
The song choice is so weird for a tango. It was a tango right? I enjoyed the performance and his enthusiasm. Also, Noah looks amazing in a white suit and Sharna dress is so gorgeous!
Really Carrie Ann. Calling out his boxey ness.
Also, Erin’s dress this week is probably one of my faves she’s ever worn.
I really liked that tango from Noah and sharna but I honestly couldn’t help bit be awed by how great it was to see all the drums and the whole thing was just great. Agreed with Bruno on this one.
@NathanUK I suppose Inverness is the closest place you might have heard of to where I am, so yeah, pretty much the other side of the world. God knows I’m looking forward to the election being over. Screwed by Labour, screwed by the Tories, it’s all the same to me. And yes, sad as I am I will obsessively check the numbers just to see what happens. I’ll get to see the show in a totally-not-illegal format tomorrow morning, but I will stare at the scores for now.
I missed most of Noah’s dance. Darn it! The little bit I saw was nice though. I’ll have to rewatch it to see if I agree with the judges’ scores. I predict I won’t 😀
Uh-oh.. Drama package for Rumer and Nastia. It’s about that time… I wish they would just keep the packages fun and interesting. Tired of the drama! Ugh..
Noah tries so hard and gives a 110%. I can’t help but like this guy and Sharna has been an amazing partner.
Did anyone else think in the clip before commercial that they were trying to make Nastia look like she was being difficult, and then trying to make Rumer/Val look sympathetic?
Chris had his best dance yet and even I have to admit that I loved it. That though…..definately one of those dwts moments that make you go wow. He went from a farmer to that?! Keep it up chris!
I am loving Nastia gladiator looking outfit!
Riker and Allison look good in that deep navy blue! Ugh, I am having the worst headache/eye sensitivity right now. I don’t think I’m going to make it. Gonna have to watch this tomorrow. Have a good night y’all!
Chris’ dance was good. I still don’t think he is as good as the judges are saying he is, nor has he improved all that much.
9’s? Two of them? I don’t think so. All 8’s at most. I’m ready to not be surprised if he is safe tomorrow and Robert and Noah (or maybe even Rumer) go home.
I didn’t think Chris sucked but I do think that 34 was a bit much. Is he going home so they’re playing the ‘leave on a high note’ script, or are they playing the ‘let’s get this person to finals regardless of how many other good people there are’ game? I’m sort of hoping for the first one, he’s wasn’t bad, just think it’s about time to go.
Gladiator? Paso Doble? Sorry to bring up Strictly again, but I’m getting flashbacks of my all-time favourite Paso around the world, which was Pixie Lott’s. It’s electrifying! I think this could and maybe should be Nastia’s best dance, but it might fall victim to the agenda of the night.
Ok. Riker was good, as usual… But am I the only one who thought it was way too intense and fast? It felt like they were running most of the time. The Viennese Waltz is supposed to be a bit softer and smooth, yet fast at the same time… isn’t it? Too much staccato on this one for me.
I don’t know, I didn’t really like it as much as the judges apparently did.
I just don’t like how aggressive Allison is with the Ballroom dances…they seem so rough and rushed. I know that she’s a great dancer and choreographer…but not ballroom. Glad Len called them out.
I really enjoyed Noah and Sharna’s Tango. His Jazz will probably stay his best, but I have no doubt Sharna could choreograph and incredible Freestyle for him.
Chris and Witney’s was good, but scored a little high, IMO.
I thought Riker and Allison’s V. Waltz was beautiful. I, too, would have preferred a bit more in hold. Overall, I was impressed. I enjoy seeing his more elegant side.
Rikers ballroom lessons are paying off!
I’m sorta feeling mixed on riker and Allison to be honest. I liked it but if I had to pick a dance out of his (trio dance coming up so this obviously can change) it was definately one of his best but not exactly a wow dance either. Sorta foregettable for me.
Every single one of Allison’s dances have been SO FAST. Do you think she does it so we overlook technical problems with her choreography?
I don’t understand what the judges see in Chris. I didn’t like that dance at all and I’m really hoping he goes tomorrow night.
I liked Riker and Allison performance but I think it was too fast and overscored.
I would have to agree with you Mr. A. Pixie Lott’s gladiator paso in Strictly during Blackpool week was outstanding. I think Nastia will slay her Paso. Good thing their songs are different.
@Vin – Which of Riker’s dances has been your favorite at this point? For me, it’s still his Salsa with his Paso after that.
Robert and kym made me sorta laugh with the video package. At this point they should just say f they are an item yet or not becuase they really are something together lol. To quote my grandmother (and this is translated from Italian): “they are a gorgeous couple and remind me of Hepburn and that other guy”. Not sure what movie she is referring to but I assume she means spencer Tracey lol.
@miss j: salsa, foxtrot, samba.
It sort of says a lot that the Quickstep was one of Riker & Allison’s slowest dances. I liked it and the concept was a newer side to Riker, I just don’t think the tempo was what it could’ve been.
I somehow keep wishing for fairness. When you have only 8 bars in hold in the VW, Len gives you a 7, everytime, when your name is Derek & whoever his partner is. That was not a 10 performance. I like Riker a lot but I wish the scores would be fair.
#Jara I agree, a little over scored, Rikers ballroom lessons paid off
Surprising amount of filler in the show tonight. Kind of like they forgot how to fill in two nights!
That cake they gave Erin looks amazing. Hope it’s actually edible and not fake. Erin really wants that kiss from kym and Robert lol.
Noah & Sharna – enjoyed the dance (and the costuming) very much. Wasn’t very tango’sh but I still appreciate all the work Sharna puts in to make what she does happen on the dance floor ever week.
Chris & Whitney – beautiful lifts, though a tad over scored.
Riker & Allison – Again, my same gripe I have every week with Allison’s choreo – she only has one speed with is TURBO. I thought with the viennese waltz we’d see something softer and slower but again, wasn’t to be.
Nastia and Sasha killed that dance. Loved it.
So the judges are going to give a 40 to Rumer. Nastia is going to pay the price tonight for Rumer’s pre destined win. Nastia is a trooper and a class act.
I don’t think Derek was needed and what she gets two dudes x dances, I’m kind of annoyed by this group and I like Derek. A little over scored to me!
Huh, 36. I thought that was probably the fairest score of the night so far, it wasn’t a wow dance for me, but that was certainly better than every other one I think that’s been showcased tonight. I’m going to admit, her Jive looked actually more interesting to me on the All Access, so I’m hoping she gets it there.
I liked nastia and sasha dance I thought all 9s was good
ok…I had some issues with the paso…but there’s no way that should have been scored less than Riker & Allison. I could see 36 for both of those.
I’m torn. I loved the theme, the song and Nastia’s dance as a whole.. It just felt a little bit slow for me for some reason. It didn’t really have the intensity and power of the Paso, in my opinion. Not sure why.. I thought it wasn’t her best but definutely not her worst. Overally, I just feel like it could have been much stronger.
Props to Sasha for being so flipping awesome, though.
I like the Paso but not the best Derek’s paso. I think if it’s Derek it will have more impact. Derek have more gusto when he danced Paso. I don’t think it should be less than Riker’s score though. We’ll see if Len will be consistent with his comments.
Nastia and Sasha were amazing and they get 4 9’s. At this point, I’m not even going to watch Rumer and Val – first, because of the inevitable planned 40, no matter what or how they dance, and second, to save myself the frustration. Moments like this I wonder why the heck I still watch this show.
I see a perfect score coming for Rumer and Val too! You know, because of her ‘Amazing Comeback”…smh…talk about a RIGGING!
I think out of the remaining couples left, I feel that Noah, Robert, and Nastia have been the most incredibly modest and trooper couples. I would love for the three of them to be left, but with Riker and Rumer, I know it’s not going to happen.
Not Nastia’s best, and appropriately scored. But others tonight were massively over scored.
This might sound crazy, but maybe they need to give back the 2 points they didn’t gave to Riker last week during immunity challenge so that’s why he was overscored… Btw: Rumer and val package urghhh !
So far I see absolutely NO hip action in that Rumba.. It wasnt all that great.
Rumer and Val were nice I think. I sort of liked their dance, it wasn’t bad, but I’m not going to call it a perfect 40. It was too jerky and sharp for a Rumba for me, and I think the song called for it a bit, but I wasn’t too impressed.
That was a rumba?
Julianne is doing FAR too much gushing over them…yup…perfect score coming right up..SICKENING!
Maybe I’m biased, but there was one part of that rumba where Rumer looked like she was taking a dump.
This is gonna get all 10’s and it’s not right.
I’m surprised. That was actually a very good dance from Rumer. I actually liked it a lot. Probably my second favorite after her Samba-That-Didn’t-Look-Much-Like-A-Samba-But-It-Was-Still-Nice.
Kudos to her and Val.
This wasn’t a rumba… I felt it was more of a tango but hey perfect score anyway haha
Look! Rumor isn’t in black! PH you called it. For whatever reason Rumer had to be on top so the package has Val crying to help that along.
Loved Rumers dance but it had more of a tango feel than Rumba
My perfect night tomorrow? Chris and Rumer both go.
Was that a rumba?
More than one line, people. more one liners (Terasia) I start deleting.
I would cry of joy if you were right, Cindy.
That rumba was great BUT I think tens were a bit much there judges. Perhaps rumor may not be as boring as I thought though.
I’m with you Cindy but I’ll be at work so I won’t see it! Maybe all that gushing from the judges mean she’s going? I can ONLY hope!!!
That was a Rumba? Huh…the judges are on crack.
@Cindy: I couldn’t agree more. Too bad we both know it’s not gonna happen.
Thus far I feel like Derek & Nastia were the only ones appropriately scored tonight – I enjoyed their dance very much, but I thought it was more tango than paso.
Everyone else? Overs cored. Especially Riker & Allison in my opinion.
I thought it was the celebrity’s journey not the pro’s? This is definitely a Maks 2.0 with the emotional storyline
That was a rumba and she got higher then Nastia’s rumba? Well hey to each its own
For the first round the three best dances were riker and allison, rumer and val, and nastia and sasha.
Later arrival here. The judges comments have been somewhat sane tonight. This week I was impressed with Noah. That was a great choreo for him. Sharna should win a separate MBT for choreo this year.
Allison’s lack of of ballroom experience showed BIG time tonight. She does not have that graceful fluidity that they judges all harp about. Even that long beautiful dress couldn’t hide her lack of sophistication with the ballroom moves. So sad.
I would’ve been okay with 8s and 9s personally.. but no way, if that happens, TPTB would never accept it. I actually think Nastia & Derek’s Rumba deserved like a 45 or something compared to Rumer & Val’s nice-dance-but-noo-not-a-rumba-at-all-Rumba soo
That was an all 10 worth rumba! Oh, give me a break. She hardly moved her hips. Not impressed at all. Guess they had to give them all 10’s or Val would go into his dry eye crying act again. Rigged.
It’s been interesting though. For the past three(?) seasons, none of the first perfect scorers have actually made it past third place. I’m hoping for the same scenario here, but I don’t know. Oh well. Screw it.
Surprise! Rumer gets the first 40. Other surprise: The judges “balance” last week’s scores and now Rumer’s in equal first place. I also suspect she really needed the padding though. And now it’s all to play for in the trios round. Unless the judges had already planned to give Rumer 2 perfect scores tonight. Which I suspect they had.
Noah and the ladies were a blast to watch. Saying that, the judges (hi Bruno) were loving it a lot more than I thought. The score was exactly what I would have given it.
Let’s look at it this way. She probably isn’t getting the votes so they had to give her the 40 since this is “Val’s season”. *rolls eyes*
The score Noah got is pretty fitting. However, the part of the dance with the arms was soooo creative and cool. Kudos to Sharna and Emma for the creativity. It worked so well.
I think that the top 3 should have been tied at 36…all very good dances, but none of them amazing
RIDICULOUS scoring from the Judges–they’re on crack.
LMFAO @ Bruno falling out of the chair! LOL
For me personally, I can’t harp to much on the perfect score for Rumer since I feel like Riker has also been given some generous scores (especially tonight)
Really enjoyed Noah’s Salsa trio – it’s a shame that Carrie Ann couldn’t retract her score and give them a 9, I think he deserved an extra point or two above what they scored him.
Rumer must not be getting votes. That is the only thing that makes sense for that score. Val gets his redemption package and she gets a perfect score. But regardless of all this pimpage, does she have votes??
I actually agree with the 9’s for Nastia’s Paso, even if they are my favorite team. There was little too much show for me and not enough pure Paso. And while I love Sasha and think he’s incredible, that was Paso that seemed more choreographed for Derek’s intensity and passion level than Sasha’s. It was amazing no doubt but not my favorite of Nastia’s routines.
With that said, the over scoring of others is ridiculous. Rumer’s dance was gorgeous but weren’t they supposed to dance a rumba? I mean, you give Nastia’s content palooza of a rumba a 36 but you give a rumba that looks like a tango a 40? That’s a head scratcher.
Rumer’s Rumba…was not a Rumba. It was a good dance, sure, but I didn’t see the flowiness or hip action. Both Riker and Rumer were overscored. Riker’s dance had it’s issue, but Rumer’s just didn’t resemble a Rumba at all to me.
Kym and Robert. Ahh. That was really good.
Sasha–welcome to Derek’s School of Dance 101. I have a feeling this season will change Sasha’s thought process about DWTS. If he EVER gets his own partner, I think we will see a big difference in Sasha’s choreo. LOL at Derek giving props to Mark for the costuming. The dance was creative and I loved every minute of it. Loved when Sasha flipped over Nastia.
Oh puke on Val and what he thinks he is suppose to be doing for Rumer. Try some creative choreo, have fun, blow the drama. IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU! I see he stretched the color palette by repeating the RED that everyone here raved about last week. Okay, I liked the dance for its simplicity. Rumer can move across that floor with such command.
That’s a rumba….riigghhhttt. The judges need to re watch and compare between Nastia and Rumer rumba. But I guess they know better since they are ballroom judges, right?
I thought tonight the judges scores were going to separate the weakest 2 from the group but aparently they think Chris is semifinals worthy and someone needs 80 pts to survive the double elim guys.
Chris paso looking a lot like Alfonso’s.
Chris had improved by leaps but that paso…..was brutal. His intense face is spot on but It seemed he was all in his head.
Again, this is not twitter. More than one line or you’re getting deleted.
That was a beautiful Rumba from Rumer. Loved it! But i don’t think that deserved all 10s!! I sill prefer Nastia-Derek’s Rumber over Rumer’s..
I have a feeling from now on, Rumer will be topping the leaderboard everyweek …and will also end up winning.
@NathanUK Kara Tointon would have if she’d kept her damn foot on the floor. It’s just a fact that even though there are two of the same judges on both panels, the American version is more generous with its 10s. It’s to do I think with the fundamental differences in viewing habits, tastes and drama preferences between the UK and the US. Add to that the fact that Grinch-with-paddles Craig is on the British version and you just can’t compare the two. That said, even by the standards of this show something’s gone down to rile some people up. I’m not surprised, I saw it coming from 2 weeks ago. It’s the second score that I think might not be a 40. Might not.
This really is Maks 2.0.. but here’s the thing. The difference between Rumer and Meryl I think is that when Meryl was on it, it was mostly about Maks. I thought she was very modest about everything she said, and I don’t think she cried a single time. I would’ve loved her to be with another pro, and would’ve probably done great/greater dances.
The thing with Rumer is, it’s mostly Val but Rumer’s playing in it too. This is totally set up and I think the 2 ‘bad weeks’ was not a good idea, Val’s totally pouncing on it although I do give a bit of kudos to him more in that package.
I’ve got to say though, 32 and 35 weren’t BAD scores. I mean, compared to Robert especially, I think the modesty is lacking a bit. I mean, I guess it’s all TPTB’s choice in the end, cause they can just totally throw everything out the window.
Liked Rumer’s dance, it was pretty and she always comits fully to the performance, but if I hadn’t read that it was a rumba, I wouldn’t have known. I’m no ballroom expert, but that was IN NO WAY, SHAPE OR FORM, better than Nastia’s rumba. That was a spectacular dance, and it wasn’t given due credit. I didn’t see hip action, and her dar dress (smart move, Val) kept me from seeing her leg movements clearly. That song has an Argentine Tango feel, so it didn’t feel much like a rumba for me… Didn’t impress me, reminded me of their foxtrot…
Liked Nastia’s dance, but thought she could have been more intense with her legs in parts. Julianne said they were out of sync in parts, I didn’t see that.
Gotta respect Chris, who’s trying his best. He has no dance or performance experience, and he’s slowly improving.
As for Robert and Kym’s kiss… Haven’t seen the dance yet, but the screenshot made me cringe…
Right, so between Chris and Noah, which is looking more and more like this week’s key battle for survival, Noah has a 6 point advantage. A good cushion if there weren’t 3 dances each and bonus points to consider. I so hope Chris goes but if he gets the votes the judges haven’t done too much to stop him from staying,
Derek fans remember for this week it is only important to be in top 4. Scores and votes are not cumulative. If Nastia comes in 3rd this week it is not the end of the world.
Don’t lecture, Stoli.
Rumer gets a 10 from Len for a rumba with no rumba content, and Riker has one of the the best jazz dances this show has seen and he gives a 9? That was disappointing.
Like I said in the “Who’s Dancing What?” post, Rumer’s song is very much a tango. The song is very staccato, and that adds a layer of challenge to the choreography. Because of the America’s choice theme, Val was incapable of dumping this one, so it becomes a test of whether he has the creativity and adaptability we’ve been talking about. I’ll have to see the dance for myself to judge, but from the sound of it he produced a Tango.
LOVED Riker’s dance! Now THAT is what I’m talking about! That was beyond amazing. Loved every second of it. One of my favorite dances this whole season. What I appareciated the most is that it wasn’t just a Freestyle number (as these Jazz dances have become), it actually had elements of Jazz! Couldn’t have been better!
Of course Len is a party pooper and gives it a 9. That should have been a 40 if Rumer’s Rumba was a 40.
Riker now has my stamp of approval to win this whole damn thing.
It was a great trio dance from Riker, but I have to wonder why there has been no outcry about his dance experience. In addition to what he referenced in the package, he was a Warbler on Glee and they were 75% dance/25% singers.
Nicole Scherzinger and Jennifer Grey had continuous complaints about how unfair it was for them to be on the show. Never felt Jennifer especially had a great advantage. Riker has a great advantage. Really enjoy his partnership with Allison, but not “fair” to the others.
I love that Jazz. Love love it.
Why the Rumba got 40 but this one is 39??? Why?? It feels really bad.
Did Jenna fall??
My problem is that the Judges hold Derek and his partners to a MUCH higher standard than others and that’s not fair. Riker is getting overly praised..he’s good but not near-perfect. Allison is STILL so staccatto & overly harshin her movements. Rumer & Val got a perfect score for a Not-A-Rumba??? the hypocrisy at the Judges table ASTOUNDS me and America takes what they say at face value 😉
Loved riker and that trio dance but Roberts fell flat to me. Liked the blue steel reference though.
My God! That Jazz trio of Riker-Allison-Britanny is the best jazz i’ve seen on DWTS! That dance deserved all 10s! Len is an ass! I’m so mad right now!!
Riker’s Jazz was amazing!! Skills, Charisma, Personality-I think he has what it takes to win this show!! I really don’t get how Rumer’s Rumba got a perfect score and Riker’s Jazz not!
Of all the dances tonight, I liked Riker’s trio dance the most so far and I think he should have had a 40. I think he should win the mirrorball! I love his enthusiasm and he is taking the competition so seriously. Chris, Robert or Noah have passed the time where they should go home. I hope we don’t have a “surprise” elimination tomorrow night. I’m still upset about Willow and Mark. Thanks to PH for doing this on show night! It is so enjoyable reading her comments.
You should read the whole site before complaining about something not being discussed, Deborah. It has, in fact been discussed ad nauseum.
Maybe this is just me but looking at Robert/Kym/Jenna…..which good for Jenna to be in a trio this season!!……..did Jenna fall on the floor or did she intentionally flip onto her back?
She did sort of an upward thrust/curl move, when she stood up so she looked like Kym, so I am not sure. But did she really mean to flip onto her back on the floor? Seems like that would be painful?
Well, Nastia’s trio dance just tied with Riker’s. Derek is so talented with his choreography. That was awesome! Nastia better not be eliminated or I will totally give up on DWTS.
THAT JIVE WAS FANTASTIC! Geez, Break Derek’s toe more often (oh my gosh, I’m just kidding) but the last two weeks have been my favorite dances on this show!
OMG! That was a PERFECT Jive Trio from Nastia, Sasha and Derek!!! SO well deserving of a perfect 40!!!
And I’m sure Rumer and Val will get a perf 40 too just to put her on top :/
So far, here’s how I feel about the trios:
1. Nastia/Derek/Sasha: Brilliant concept and execution.
2. Riker/Allison/Brittany: Great dancing (but it did unintentionally emphasize that Riker is basically all legs).
3. Rumer/Val/Artem: Great dance, but can we see something other than “intense” from her?
4. Noah/Sharna/Emma: Tons of fun.
5. Robert/Kym/Jenna: Cute, but it was kinda messy.
6. Chris/Witney/Lindsay: Didn’t really do anything for me.
The best dances of the night for me were allison and riker, 2nd nastia and sasha, 3rd val and rumer.
Now that’s how to Jive, people. The tongue-in-cheek Derek vs Sasha concept was sheer genius. I know the peeps in NYC who bought tickets, are missing not seeing Derek. DWTS viewers are benefiting big time, though! Derek for the win again? Is that possible?
How many names will the put on the MBT? LOL
Is Julianne on crack?! If memory recalls correctly she had Adam Corolla on a unicycle. That is the pot calling the kettle black there Julianne.
Nastia, Sasha and Derek – Absolutely Fantastic. I’m going to be watching that performance over and over again.
Derek never fail to amaze me with his choreography. That Jive along with the charleston deserve an Emmy nom.
Nastia/Derek/Sasha’s trio is my favorite trio I’ve ever seen on the show, so far. I thought there could’ve been a tiny bit more refining on the dance part but the concept was absolutely brilliant. The Charleston and the Jive have been my two favorite dances from her so far.
Side note I enjoyed that paso trio a lot. Val and artem killed it.
Funny thing with Rumer’s dancing, is it is just so boring to me. I just don’t get what the judges have for her. Even when the cameras panned to the audience they were just clapping politely. If she wins, it won’t be due to fan votes.
Absolutely loved Nastia’s jive! The concept was so fresh and creative and so much fun. As much as I loved the jive, I absolutely hated the picture her package created though; but then it fits right into the “Val’s comeback” storyline to portray Nastia that way.
Riker’s jazz was probably my second favorite dance of the night but I find that I’m feeling tired of watching Allison’s choreography (I never thought I’d say that, as I’ve always admired Allison as a dancer). Both numbers tonight felt so jerky to me and I feel like that is true of so many of their numbers.
I didn’t even bother to watch Rumer’s trio as the scores are predictable at this point and it really doesn’t matter what she does. On a personal note, Strictly Ballroom is one of my favorite movies, and I kind of feel like I don’t want to associate it with Rumer or Val.
As I said last week, Riker fan here… So my bias will be showing. LOVED the Jazz number! Riker was front and center leading the trio. – loved it! This is one dance that was underscored. Should have been a perfect score. The Viennese waltz was lovely and Riker looked great, but to me the dance was a bit too “other than VW” for me, and was overscored.
I didn’t think Rumor was as good as she was scored. I thought her Rumba was a Tango. Her expressions in the Paso looked like she was scared. Nice dancing, but for me not deserving of a perfect night.
Didn’t enjoy Nastia’s gladiator paso. The jive was fabulous! So creative! Nastia looked great. I agree with the judges that it was one of most creative jives ever. Very deserving of the perfect score.
As for the three other guys…. One has a Nice back story, one is nice guy who needs to give Kym a Ferrari, and one is a clumpy dancer. All three of them can go.
Ugh another perfect score for Rumer. They are doing whatever needs to be done to assure Val has his season. And I hope it all blows up on them.
Allison is a very jerky dancer.
I felt that Rumer was WAY OVERSCORED on her Rumba…the Paso was good but she was looking down for most of the dance :/ and as Heidi said, was repetitive
Well, I’ll give credit where credit is due… Rumer killed that Paso Doble. It was truly fantastic.
I gotta say, she may be getting pimped to high heavens, but I feel like tonight I was finally able to enjoy her dancing. Not only did I enjoy her, but I also enjoyed Val a bit more. Just reminded me of the Val from Season 16 with Zendaya (my favorite Val, lol).
I guess I just really like Rumer as a person. She comes across as very down to earth and just very chill and I really like that. In a perfect world she would be paired up with Mark or Derek. That way I would have enjoyed her ALL season long, as opposed to just tonight. Val is just very inconsistent for me. Sometimes I like him, sometimes I can’t stand him. Tonight he was the good Val, so I appreciated that.
of the top 3 trios, I liked Riker’s the best – I think that it showcased his personality the best. Nastia’s actually seemed like recycled choreo from Derek, and while the intensity of the Paso was good for Rumer, it seemed a little safe. Of those 3, I would have given Riker the perfect score. I don’t think that anyone deserved an 80 tonight…the only one that I’m ready to see leave is the Bachelor
@MichLee, agree with you about how they portrayed Nastia. I felt it was very unfair to single out her weak moments while hyping Rumer and Val’s “comeback” story. She’s been a trooper this entire time and has had a good attitude about everything thrown at her.
Just to add a little bit…Val isn’t a good actor. My daughter can fake a cry better than him 😀
Now that they show Riker dancing with his bros when can we see Rumer’s dancing background on her package? The show tonight makes me think TPTB is trying to save one couple from elimination and put them in the semifinal.
Wow, they really all stepped it up tonight. Just excellent. I loved them all for different reasons. Adding: Derek, Nastia, and Sasha’s trio dance blew me away the most. I loved Riker and Allison tonight too.
@sam so true haha Riker and his skinny legs are a little bit distracting like his flexed wrists
I have to rewatch the dances but I think everyone danced better than last week. Of course Nastia got the bad package treatment, and Rumer got to reenact “Baz live” and two perfect scores.
Nastias jive was so clever and fun! I loved it.
I liked Rumers dances but she was in her comfort zone. I felt there was a lot of walking in the rumba and not enough dragging her feet but like I said I have to rewatch.
I still don’t see what the judges see on Chris I just see Witney dancing around him.
Trio night is usually my favorite, but I was kind of underwhelmed this time. While I think Noah, Robert and Chris did a nice job given their skill level, I wasn’t wowed by them. And I found the top three trios a bit lacking — each in a different way. Rumer/Val/Artem seemed to lack content for me as well — like they should have been more fierce than they were. They could have borrowed the excess sharpness from Riker’s trio. I know the song dictated somewhat, but I felt that it was a very jerky jazz — but I think a lot of that is Allison. She hits it too hard and pulls way too much focus from Riker — tonight it really was too overpowering. He’s a quirky sharp dancer, but not a forceful one, so Allison’s hard edges really stick out more than they would with someone else.
And, while I think they did well with the limitations they had, Derek’s bum toe/ankle situation made their trio less vivid for me than his other ones. It also shows how much Derek’s dancing as much as his choreo lifts the performances he has with his partners. Sasha’s doing a great, great job, but Derek’s star power tends to overshadow Sasha (and, at times Nastia). As much as I love that Derek was there, I sort of wonder what it would have been like with a fully mobile third person, with Derek choreographing.
All I can say is that what happened in tonight’s show was what I kind of expected, especially having read the posts here and the thoughts of the mods. Hats off to all those who predicted that this was Val’s–er–Rumer’s amazing comeback. Very nice package edit, like always. And she’s “superior” according to Carrie Ann. And Jules said it was nice to see them just dance, no gimmicks (conveniently forgetting that that was what they were doing in many of their past dances), right after Nastia’s trio dance, which I think is the cleverest trio I’ve seen on the show. I think this is one of those most obvious nights when tptb showed their (dirty?) hand, hehe.
I’ll focus on the three best dancers left because it seemed that the scoring for them was wonky–Riker, Nastia & Rumer. Riker’s first dance was far from smooth and yet got raves and good scores. I think his score should be the same as Nastia’s for her Paso, who needed to more fierce in a couple of parts. Rumer’s Rumba was not a very recognizable Rumba, jerky, little hip action, good emoting, though–not 40-worthy at all. I’m okay with the 40 for her trio because it was cleaner, although to me, there was more interaction between Artem & Val, which kind of relegated Rumer in the background. Maybe a strategy. Riker’s trio could have been 40 as well, although I didn’t realize he was dancing Jazz until much later. But he dominated that dance and handled the two pros very well.
Thanks, mods, for all the spoilers, well-thought-out comments, and intelligent observations about the show in general. Really helps me put the show in a perspective, and not easily get riled by it when we see things are being forced upon viewers. More power!
I don’t really think Nastia came off all that bad in the package. She was stressed, tired and frustrated. It happens and even when the producers prodded her she wouldn’t give them any real drama to flaunt. She even held in her tears until she was “semi-private” with Derek and instead of going for the drama there, simply said, “I’m done today.” I actually give her props for not playing the producers game.
If it’s OK for the others to be frustrated and tired then it’s OK for Nastia. Especially given the circumstances.
Alright – enough with the SCD discussion and comparisons. The vast majority of people on this site do not watch SCD and it is OFF TOPIC.
Rumer’s “magic” is performance. Just like Zendaya, she’s able to cover up technical slip ups with performance, and the judges eat it up. She was swinging that skirt so ferociously it was distracting me from the dancing, but I thought her Paso deserved the 40. Her AT rumba didn’t.
Loved Nastia’s trio, only Derek could have come up with such creative concept, another Emmy submission worthy piece IMO.
Loved Riker’s jazz, my second favorite dance of the night (he’s an amazing hip hop dancer! If he makes the final, his freestyle is going to be insane!). One little thing that kinda bothered me were his pants. He has such skinny legs, and he wears skinny pants, looks a little awkward at times.
If Nastia, Riker and Rumer make the final, the first two have two super versatile choreographers as partners. Val has lost more than one season on freestyles, anything outside of ballroom he struggles with. I’m sure they’ll have outside help tho, and he’ll probably take advantage of her aerial skill and incorporate that (like in Kelly Monaco’s FS), but innovative choreography is not his style… I would love to see Nastia, Riker and Noah as the top 3. Rumer’s a very good dancer though, just not worthy of all the hype IMO.
Riker for best Jazz ever on DWTS?? NO. It was very good, but it’s not close to the best – like Amy/Derek and/or Derek Kellie. Or hell, Derek/Amber. All three were far more creative.
That said, it was a tie between that Jazz and Derek/Nastia’s Jive for dance of the night.
Riker’s jazz was probably the only dance of his that I enjoyed a little. Cannot warm up to him, and I doubt I will. :/ But I can’t deny that he dances really well.
Was not a fan of either of Noah’s dances tonight, sadly.
Robert was adorable and he got a good chunk of my votes tonight. No way in hell was his contemporary scored less than Chris’s. I can’t believe that…
That said, it also seems like they pimped Chris for some reason and I’m not sure why????????
Nastia’s paso was good, but not great to me. That jive though? Oh. My. God. Derek, bless you.
I like Rumer. I think she’s kind of fun in her packages. That said, both of her dances were less than perfect. The paso was good, just reminded me of last week in that it was safe. And the rumba… kind of didn’t look like a rumba? But I also kind of liked it. I’m torn because I like Rumer, but I honestly wouldn’t mind seeing Val get the axe on “his” season.
LOL, Vin. Of course Val and Artem killed it – they’re pros.
Okay, so I actually LOVED sharna and noah’s dance. I thought it was way under-scored, and I felt that it was the most movement we have seen from Noah in the whole episode. I feel so bummed when I sense their disappointment in the scores. The all white tango was gorgeous, btw I always feel like America chooses really well.
I LOVED riker and allison’s viennese waltz. I think she’s been choreographing beautifully this season, and riker’s lines were wonderful.
I liked cris and witney’s dance, he has DEFINITELY improved.
I didn’t enjoy robert and kym’s dance that much to be honest, even though it was danced pretty well and was quite sweet. I don’t know, something in the rhythm of the dance was off to me, it didn’t feel like a true contemporary dance to me for some reason.
I felt nastia’s dance was a bit underscored, maybe a ten or two could have been thrown in, but I was fine with it not receiving like a perfect score because I could see the out of sync stuff that the judges were talking about. I’m happy though that Nastia is connecting so great with both sasha and derek! I also missed seeing her dance with derek. 🙁 kudos to her for being SO adaptable.
I was happy that Val owned up to the fact that for the past few weeks he has been bringing rumer down choreography wise, etc. It took a lot to man up to that I think, so he won my respect for that. And I loved their dance! I was happy they got a perfect score, i felt that dance was deserving.
I’m also glad that Nastia, Sasha and, Derek got that perfect score as well for their jive. That dance was PERFECT. Nastia danced like a pro in that dance, I think that despite the fact that it was so difficult for her, to me it is hands down her best dance. The choreography and ideas were phenomenal too! I would get nervous though lol when derek would dance, like please be careful! Lol.
Noah, Emma, and Sharna’s dance I thought was wildly creative. Robert was so cute with kym and jenna. 😀 And wow, I LOVE the way that brittany dances. That jazz was fantastic, although you could tell that riker was really bummed to not get a perfect score, and a nine from len. I liked that val and artem kept their vest things on, and I thought the paso was awesome! I liked that the music was actually paso-like, and that the dancing didn’t leave the genuine paso in the dust.
I really enjoyed tonight, can’t wait for semifinals!!!
I thought Riker did a fantastic job both in the VW and the trio. He really has the Hough charisma and I enjoy watching him dance. He is very quick on his feet. However, during the VW I was actually cringing watching Allison fling herself around with such jerky motions. It was hard to watch especially since I think I have been spoiled since Season One enjoying the finesse and fluidity of the real ballroom dancing women pros; I guess I just have been taking their skill for granted, and it is such a shock to watch Allison’s jerky maneuvers in what should be a flowing ballroom dance.
Nastia was spectacular in the wildly creative trio, and I was so happy to see Derek dance even a little. He really put his indelible mark on that routine. It definitely deserved all 10s, imo. I’m so impressed with what Nastia has been able to accomplish thus far, with 2 different partners! The paso was interesting and I think she danced it well, but I felt Derek’s Caesar get-up was a tad distracting from the dance.
Rumer’s Rhumba was underwhelming to me and didn’t deserve 4 10s, especially because I didn’t see much hip action, and the moments when Artem & Val were dancing with each other & Rumer was off to the side seemed awkward to me.
I thought at one point that I wouldn’t mind seeing Robert in the final, but after tonight I take that back because he flubbed his footwork in the trio. Noah & Chris were ok, not great and it wouldn’t bother me if any of the three were eliminated tomorrow.
@PH Hmm you’re actually right about the rumba content in rumer’s dance even though I loved it. 🙁 i felt it could have had more hip action. But maybe that’s because dereks rumbas are my favorites, and his hip action is fantastic in them
Also, Rumer were red for both dances, the characters were both kinda dark (again), so the dances looked a bit repetitive. Considering she also were red last week, they could have done something different. I saw a lot of interaction between the two guys and moments when she was just kinda standing there. The whole thing was so fast it was hard to understand what the number was about. I suppose it was some kind of battle between the two guys. It was a very good dance, nothing too new for her, she’s done similar things (with less technique obviously) with her theater show based on that ballroom movie.
I hate all the drama and manipulation in the US version. The UK version, and even the Russian version seem to be a lot more about the dance and the contestants.
Personally I loved Derek as Caesar, although I had to snicker at his hair band. I just thought there was something kind of bad ass and “this is my kingdom don’t you forget it” about him sitting up on the top of the stage in a massive throne looking out over the ballroom. Sure, knowing Derek that vibe was not at all on his radar but I found it kind of symbolically awesome.
@CCNY: I agree with you. Half of the time I like val, the other half of the time I really don’t. Sometimes he almost seems like he’s looking down on people or I don’t know, like two-faced? But then other times he seems really caring and nice. I dunno. But yeah, looking at the comments, rumer’s rumba was missing fluidity and hip action
Rikers Jazz was fun, it was nice to see him upfront and strutting his stuff. I love Nastia’s trio but I am not sure I saw Derek Jive, right? I thought it was a wise choice for Val to go back to basic ballroom to gain higher scores and I thought they were both Beautiful, rumba or not. I wish when Rumer stepped out of her fierce mode she was more successful with Val, she seems to have such a fun and spirited personality. It is to bad that DWTS won’t do a late switch up week. Chris and Robert try so hard, they are so fun!
I have to disagree with most comments, I think Rumer is a very good dancer, I almost feel like she is discredited based on her partner which is too bad.
I thought it was funny when nastia said she didn’t want to see anyone go home, like she knows she is the winner winner chicken dinner. I hope it is nice royal battle to the end. And as much as I love Derek, my vote will probably go elsewhere.
“I thought it was funny when nastia said she didn’t want to see anyone go home, like she knows she is the winner winner chicken dinner”
Terasia #143, like Rumer’s “We have no competition” from the get-go? And I don’t think anyone has said that Rumer is not a good dancer. In fact, she is. It’s just that she’s coming off as one-note, like many here have observed. And that is on Val, her pro.
My fave dances of the night were Nastia’s Jive & Riker’s Jazz! I wish Riker would’ve gotten a perfect score as well, totally deserved in my opinion.
Just had a look at Facebook as I visited the site to vote and the Derek haters are already in full force…sigh…and people seem to be raving over Rumer as usual. At least among the Facebook folks she seems to be the most popular along with Riker (from what I could see week to week). And people also seem to buy into ”it’s Val’s turn to win”…sigh again…I hope Riker takes the MBT lol, alone to see Val’s face, if Allison wins before him lol
I am really impressed with Riker and Allison… surprised at Riker’s adaptation and improvement each week. I love Allison and appreciate her upbeat personality.
Given Riker’s mention of his/bands hip hop dancing and A’s great Twitch influence, I hope they can incorporate some hip hop in a future (maybe contemporary or freestyle…)hope they make it to the end.
Sasha is a sweetheart; glad to see him get a break!
#nobleze -Let’s clarify that Rumer said, There is no competition as great as the competition she was with herself. That line has been mis-quoted all season.
Also, there is nothing wrong with Nastia being confident about being the winner, she does have Derek as her partner!!! It is kind of a given.
For Val to win, he is going to have to come up with some epic choreography, I don’t think it is his season without earning it. We will have to see if he is up to the challenge. I still think it is going to be a battle of the cousins and milked to death.
My wish for the final result is:
1. Nastia and Derek – winners of the MBT
2. Riker and Allison
3. Noah and Sharna
I want Nastia to win but I wouldn’t be too upset if Riker won. I find his personality a bit off putting but that boy can dance. Rumer and Val – Big UGH. Sick of seeing them being pimped. Sick of seeing them over scored.
Terasia #143, if Rumer and Val can dance what looked like a soft Tango when they’re supposed to be doing a Rumba, I don’t see why there’d be any problem with Derek not doing traditional Jive moves. At least the other 2 members of their Trio were doing Jive. So that’s double the proper dance content over what Val gave us in Rumer’s so-called Rumba.
You are wrong, Terasia. She did say it the way that Nobleze said she did. She also said that she had the other competitors “scared”.
The whole crying package with Val really sort of irked me. Dude, seriously. Derek’s got two broke down feet and he wasn’t show crying, he was shown crawling on his hand and knees to choreograph for his partner and to be there for her in the ways he could outside of dancing. I am all for showing emotions but seriously, in context with what others like Derek and Sharna are working against, you have no reason for the crocodile tears buddy. I understand the pressure and all that but making it about you is not your job as a pro.
1. Nastia/Derek/Sasha…Loved the Paso Doble and Nastia played the part well, even with her expressions, but of course the judges were set out to low ball her and didn’t give her credit for something they have been nit-picking her about. TPTB just had to grab her tired moment and run with it. Well, everone has had one, and I don’t blame her with the abnormality she endured. That Jive was sensational and one of the best I’ve seen. Loved how the guys interacted with Nastia and she was the center of the dance. She’s awesome!!! Her overall points for the total weeks 1-8 she is still 2 points ahead of Riker and 12 points ahead of Rumer.
2. Riker & Allison… Their V. Waltz, I agree with Len, not enough hold. The Jazz was good, but Riker’s legs bother me, cause they always seem bent a little bowed since week one. I agree with others about Allison not good with Ballroom choreography.
3. Rumer & Val… hated their package, just like his brother, boo hoo poor me I need to create some drama. Is red the only color Val likes besides black? That was not a “Rumba” but looked like most of their dances. Contemporary/Tango more than Rumba. And, Len just praised it. Go Figure! As far as the Paso Doble Trio, I didn’t think Rumer did enough and the guys stood out more to me. I like Nastia’s Paso better.
4. Noah & Sharna… Loved their Contemporary, and Noah looked so charming. Loved their Trio dance with Emma. They worked around Noah’s handicaps so amazingly. He has had a great journey.
5. Robert & Kym… Contempory was one of his best dances, but it didn’t need the smoochy kiss. An almost kiss is better. The Samba Trio was good but I felt Robert lost a step or something. But he did look better this week.
6. Chris & Witney… Their Contempory was pretty good considering Chris has struggled the past weeks. Their Trio dance I felt like the judges said, the girls kinda over powered Chris, and he seemed to be in his head putting a little too much in his steps like he was stomping.
All in all, I did think that everyone did step it up this week.
And, I am impressed with those in this PureDWTS member board and how well they predicted how tonight would go, and were spot on in calling it.
Glad you remember that “scared” part, Princess H. I knew I was forgetting something.
And really, Terasia. Three exclamation points to drive your point? Yes, there’s nothing wrong with being confident about winning. But you did put that “like she knows she is the winner winner chicken dinner.” Which kind of sounds petty, juvenile even.
I don’t think it’s Val season either. The show, after all, is about the celebrities/stars.
i never watch but tonight i liked the song from the two room dance-pretty rockin’ number-what song was that? shaferlee@aol.com
I usually like trio week, but this one was a bit meh. Enjoyed Nastia/Derek/Sasha and Riker/Allison/Brittany the most. The individual dances weren’t bad either but the scores were a bit generous in some areas.
Rumer and Val’s “rumba” bothered me because of the costume choice and even her shoes. While the song can be seen as tango and rumba, the costuming and her shoes made it look more tango like, despite having some rumba steps in it. That bothered me for some reason. Didn’t think it was worthy of a 40, but honestly, I think Nastia and Derek’s rumba is probably my favorite of all time and I’ve seen every season of the show lol. Their trio with Artem wasn’t bad, but I’ve realized that what bothers me about Rumor is her arms. She hits everything either too hard or just sometimes flings or sticks it out. She needs more fluidity in her arm movements. Her movement kind of reminds me Sabrina Bryan, and just needs to calm down some of her movements and not go off balance from it.
Riker and Allison’s viennese waltz started very promising and I enjoyed it til about half-way . Then it started to look to jerky and not fluid and then turned into their typical dances. They need to just soften up and take it down a notch, especially on the ballroom and slower dances. Would like to see how he does with a rumba.
Nastia and Derek/Sasha. I think the paso was a fair score, but in consideration to what others got, they were underscored. I liked it but some parts I felt Sasha and her were not matching in movement quality but it’s just a minor thing. Their trio was fun and I’m glad she was able to not let the jive get to her. Would’ve preferred a little more bounce but it was a fun number!
Honestly, everyone else I kind of just skimmed over. Maybe I’m just not happy with the costuming this week, but Noah’s tango suit kind of annoyed me today too. Liked their trio with Emma though! Chris has been overscored a lot now because they keep comparing him to how he was before instead of comparing him with the rest of the competition. Witney also does most of the work and covers him pretty well though. I really liked Robert and his spirit but he’s slipping now and has too many inconsistent weeks. Doesn’t help the judges are harsh on him compared to Chris.
My favorite of the night was Rumer. She definitely did lots of Rumba and Paso Doble. Her rumba was my favorite.
I didn’t like Nastia’s paso since it wasn’t a lot of paso doble and her jive wasn’t truly a trio dance in which the three dance together.
Riker’s Viennese waltz was too fast. I did not enjoy it. His jazz was ok but his bent legs always bother me.
I DID NOT like Riker’s VW. Allison bothers me so much with her jerky moves! And they were going at a thousand miles per hour. Really disappointed. I was actually looking forward to seeing what Allison could come up with for this dance. I didn’t know it would like her other dances…too fast and too jerky. She really needs to not be on the show as a pro. It’s getting quite annoying. Same can be said for their jazz. It’s nothing I haven’t seen before. Allison is too one-note as a choreographer. Never liked her and don’t think I will.
Loved Nastia and Derek, but I didn’t love their Paso very much. Lacked the power and intensity. Their jive concept was out of this world! Great job D Hough! That’s why I love you!
I thought Chris’s contemporary was good!
I can see what others are saying about Allison’s choreography being too intense and jerky. One thing I noticed in most of their dances is that Allison depends too much on the beat of the percussion in the song rather than the melody of the vocals (particularly because she had too much hip hop and other non-ballroom dances in her experience). Sadly, this carried over in their Viennese waltz. Instead of allowing themselves to glide across the floor smoothly with the music, they relied too much on every beat to create dramatics. Still good, though, performance-wise, but far from perfect… a bit over-scored.
Their jazz trio, however, was amazing, as I had expected. The dance is in line with Allison’s expertise. I don’t understand why the others complain about Allison’s intensity in this dance when the song and the dance style asked for it. C’mon, give the girl a break. It’s her genre. She knows what she’s doing. =)
I agree with everyone’s comments on Allison’s choreo. The entire time when I was watching the VW and they released in and out of hold, I thought Allison was going to go flying into the audience by how fast and intensely she was moving. VW is normally such a beautiful dance, but the choreo made it seem like her and Riker were going after each other…I did not see the “vulnerable” side of Riker that we were supposed to see. I cannot fault him for this though because if he was not to match Allison’s intensity then he would get harped on by the judges.
Their trio was just another trio to me. Nothing special and nothing I will ever remember. When we were watching my friend commented to me about how much better Brittany looked than Allison and how much more control Brittany seemed to have over her body and movements.
I have a tie for trio of the night 1) Nastia for creativity and 2) Rumor for content. The rest of the trios were just there. Would like to give major credit to Sharna, Emma, and Noah for that AWESOME opening pose.
Well, I wouldn’t say Allison is one-note. She’s not just keen on the nuances of those dances she’s given to choreograph, which I attribute to her lack of her experience in ballroom, so she uses her strengths to make up for it, intensity being one. She usually performs well in dances choreographed by other people. Nevertheless, I still find myself enjoying her dances every week, although I’d rather see her on So You Think You Can Dance where she is highly praised and arguably considered as the best contemporary dancer that has ever graced SYTYCD’s dance floor.
For me the best of the night was that trio from Riker and Allison, they have been consistent every single week, are the most entertaining. I want him to be in the finals so we can see his freestyle that would be absolutely awesome. I think theres more in him, i can feel it.
I didn’t feel much from Rumer’s dances, she was my favorite at the beginning me being fan of Val, but they just seemed to have lost the sparkle. They tried to bring that back this week but i feel like its too late i already love others.
All my votes are for Riker!
And the producers have finally managed to piss off Derek. He just dropped a whole lot of shade over that package that was shown tonight on Instagram. I think he finally hit his limit on being PC over how they have been portraying his partnership and his partner. He straight called them out and set down the reality. It’s about damn time and I’m so proud of him. The fact that he said, “I hope you see the reality of this couple” about the two of them. Oh yeah, he’s done.
I agree Michelle. That post, plus Derek didnt look happy at the end the show. He always stands up for his partners, but never seen a post like this. I think as much as the producers want Val to win, they still will not want to piss of Derek by making Nastia look bad.
I agree too, Michelle and Ananya. I felt horrible for Nastia for the package; it was equally as terrible to see Noah and Chris go through that a couple of weeks ago. I applaud all of the celebrities who come on this show and allow themselves to be totally vulnerable and filmed for 8+ hours. It is such a shame to see a quick 5-10 minute breakdown be the center of a package. Yes it humanizes these celebrities and shows us that they to get frustrated when they are tired and challenged, but no one wants to relive those moments and have them broadcasts to millions. It is truly a shame how those are the moments that production chooses to focus on.
I wish they would show more of the goofy moments like for example when Witney told Chris to act like she had just burned down all of his crops. Funny moment and relevant to showing Chris get into character.
It’s normal that Nastia got only 36 points for her paso Doble, if she had got more points, even with two perfect score, Rumer would not be first 😉
I think the pros and celebs are now seriously starting to wise up to the fact that a bad package can lead to you losing votes. I can’t believe it’s taken this long for them to realise and actually kick up a fuss over it. It was a terrible package to be fair, I’ve only just caught up on the dances and Nastia’s 2nd VT looked really bad, and I know that because I saw a little bit of their livestream earlier in the week where she looked the opposite of what she did in that package. I can understand TPTB for wanting to show drama in their VTs but when they use it to try and turn viewers against someone that’s when we have a problem.
With the packages though, I think the smartest two have been Noah and Nastia. Yep, TPTB managed to capture Noah & Sharna’s argument and run with it, but Noah clearly stated that he wasn’t happy at all with it, and actually expressed what he thought, unlike many other people. TPTB also tried to run with Nastia being tired and stressed, but it’s so interesting how she didn’t give them what they want. I think those are pretty brave moves to show TPTB. Oh well, I have this feeling that, Nastia & Derek are probably going to get some brutal treatment from TPTB but I think that if this actually continues, TPTB might actually lose Derek, not because of how the other pros are or anything like that, but the treatment of the couples from the Producers..
By the way I have to give a shoutout to DWTS All Access for getting the three pro dancers worldwide that have suffered the worst in terms of being given a terrible celebrity dancer season after season after season all together in the All Access booth. Tony, Emma and Anton Du Beke! I can’t wait to watch that back, I bet between those three they could make an amazing book.
Can’t say I’m surprised that Rumer’s comeback arc finally came this week, it looks like TPTB have firmly set their stool on who they want to win this thing, but is she getting the votes? If Chris and Robert leave as predicted tonight, then it’s going to get really interesting. Anyone that beats Noah will have to getting a lot of votes regardless of scores because surely he’s killing it in the votes if he stays tonight.
I sincerely hope this season blows up in the producers faces. After that package they gave Nastia and reading Derek’s response to it, she must be very upset about it. I think the veil has really dropped this season and regulat fans are starting to see just how manipulated the show is. Val gets the opportunity to apologise on national tv to all his fans that he isn’t the ass he showed himself last week to be, and make it all about him. It is “his” season after all! And Nastia gets hosed in her package for no reason but to create some stupid drama. I am beyond pissed off with this show. Like I said, I hope it blows up on them.
I feel like every season we have to have at least one week where the couples have their “drama” so to speak. Noah got it, Riker got it, Rumer got it and now Nastia. It was bound to happen, sadly. But we can’t dwell on a 30 second clip from that’s edited. The dancing is what matters.
AR#129 I totally agree with your comments. For me last night was totally a bomb! Rumer’s dances were not worth two perfect scores. Val is trying too hard to win that trophy for himself. Unfortunately he is short changing his partner. Riker’s dances were way too staccato. Allison needs to tone down her dancing. I was disappointed in Nastia’s dances. I agree that maybe Derek should have just choreographed the trio and let someone else dance it. As for Noah I think he has gone as far as he can unfortunately.
As for Robert and Chris I have had enough of both! As to who maybe going home tonight, I think it will be Robert and Chris; but Rumer may replace one of them. I honestly don’t think she is getting the votes. Just my opinion.
I just love how derek isn’t sticking up for the show anymore- he is sticking up for nastia and that’s all. He could care less about the producers -I don’t no if anyone else caught this but in the livestream from earlier this week, the producers were telling him to stop singing a song or something like that otherwise they would have to pay for it and derek was like well that’s not my problem and kept singing lol. That says alot
I loved both Houghkin dances. Upon reading comments about the paso and whiners on SM saying Derek is a stage hog I was afraid to watch, but I absolutely loved it. His IG breaks my heart for both him and Nastia. I’m so down on this program right now, I watched only their dances so I have nothing to compare them too.
#168 Tina – nastia got the bad package 3 times this season more then any other couple- the first 1 was the the samba package- then the tango package and then last night’s package. So it’s not just 1 week for them of bs drama. It’s been non stop all season and it’s pathetic
Did anyone else feel like last night was kinda wierd? There were only a handful of bumpers……I guess I’ve just gotten used to more with the one day a week shows. And it seemed like a ton of people were MIA. I didn’t see Mark or Tony or Henry.
Derek has been very positive throughout his season on this show. I’m not a longtime fan of his but I always admire his attitude from the beginning. So reading his IG about Nastia shows A LOT about the producers. I always wanted Derek to say things like this. I completely understand his feelings…enough is enough.
I liked Rumer and Val’s Trio Paso better than their Rumba.
Rumba is probably my favorite Latin dance so seeing their’s getting mad props when it didn’t deserve it, miffed be a bit. Rumer had no hip action at all. Their was no pushing through the floor, up through the leg to the hip at all. That motion gives Rumba that sort of slinky, fluid look that I love so much.
Plus, like most of Val’s dances, it was herky jerky frantic. For God’s sake dude, let the steps breathe a bit.
Rumer did look stunning in both of her red costumes.
I loved the intricate arm movements in Noah and Sharna’s Trio Salsa. Plus, EMMA!
Voters better cut Nastia some slack with the rehearsal package she got last night. Girl is damn tired. Understandably so. And Derek isn’t the type of pro to coddle his partner and dumb down a routine just because their stressed for a bit. He pushes his partners to suceed beyond what they think is possible.
Every celeb has those stressed, shut down moments during the competition. Maybe I’m seeing things that aren’t there and should go put on a tinfoil hat and sit in the corner, but I find it suspicious that the week Val decides to put away his competitivness and just have fun is the same week TPTB decide to air the footage of Nastia stressed out.
So I went to Yahoo.com and looked around. Two articles about DWTS, both gushing about Rumer & Val. I am getting to the point with the pimpage that saying I am over it doesn’t do it justice.
I genuinely do not understand why Val is so pimped!! I have a theory though. I think the producers would love for Maks to come back. His brand of drama draws attention …….. I wonder if a deal was cut between Maks and the producers,……..get Val a MBT and I will come back. sounds crazy right? But then again look what they did to get Maks his trophy!!
Herbie, all these over the top pimping makes me think Rumer is Not getting the votes. Why else would they have to push her so much. I do have to wonder, does middle America keep up with all these articles. At the end of the day, I think they determine the winner.
I thought it was bad with the Janel & Val pushing last season but this is even worse. And I DO like Rumer. It’s Val and the producers that are annoying me.
Since when is WEEK 8 the time where safe, simple dances are rewarded more than unique, interesting and also well-danced dances (Nastia and Riker)? I don’t think Val should be rewarded for playing it safe with the choreo at all. Rumer looked good, but there was nothing special about those dances, esp after Riker and Nastia’s awesome trios. Not 40 worthy. If that is what he plans to do to win the mirrorball, it won’t be a memorable win at all. We’re setting up a Part 3 (Part 1 being nice girl Melissa wins one finally for Tony with only ok choreo and lots of pimping, Part 2 being nice girl Meryl wins one finally for Maks with good dancing but only ok choreo and lots of pimping).
If Rumer & Val had done intricate, unique, challenging dances, they would have still gotten 40s and been praised for that. But no, they did the opposite so now the script is “simple and pure dancing is the best.”
I really think the producers have done a lot to hurt Nastia’s chance to win, let alone Derek’s injury making it more difficult for them, and all the people who do not want him to win again. I am hoping for a Riker upset, but he needs to make it to the final first. I would find it hard to believe that Rumer & Val could top a Riker & Allison freestyle.
@Susan2, completely agree with you on the timing of those packages. This is exactly the way TPTB envisioned it, right down to Val’s so called enlightened moment. It just makes me sick. The sad thing is that many viewers believe those packages hook, line and sinker and fall into what TPTB want without even realizing it. TPTB keep doing it because it works. I don’t believe for one second that Val has had this breakthrough and is no longer focused on the win – but I worry that so many viewers will fall for it, feel bad and send their votes Val’s way, forgetting that it’s supposed to be Rumer’s journey.
Nastia’s reaction was one of sheer exhaustion and frustration at production for trying to create something more than was actually there. She has worked so hard, dealt with everything that has happened with grace and has performed amazingly each and every week. Rather than celebrate that, they chose to paint her in an unflattering light and it’s just maddening. For Derek to speak out the way he did speaks volumes about what is happening this season. The way I feel today about this show is the way I felt for the majority of S18 – thoroughly disgusted.
I agree with another poster above – I hope TPTB’s plan blows up right in their faces.
Ananya- maybe you are right. It just seems so OTT. I mean wasn’t Rumer on the cover of US Weekly last week? Ugh.
Why can’t they just let it be a fair competition
Agreed MichLee 181. I get that this is a reality show and producers are out to make money and create buzz above all. It just sucks because I feel like even more than other reality shows, these celebs that sign up for this show work SO hard (mentally and physically) constantly for 12 weeks. They all deserve to have a fair shot at the mirrorball based on their dancing and the truth about their partnerships. It’s just getting worse and worse with the agendas and it’s hard to see.
I am crying sweet holy BS on Rumer’s 80/80 and here is my reasoning
Rumba
What was that. Starting with the dress. Again it was a dark dress like the upteen before it. Her hips went on strike. The most basic fundamntal part of the Rumba was missing. She did not close her legs (ooh pardon *wink face* what am i like) when she went out into fan position. The choreo like all choreo on DWTS seems to focus on the arms more than anything and even then the line was never fully finished. It was stoppy and starty which is unlike the Rumba which should never stop (impersonation of Bruno doing his Rumba lines). The arrangement of the song as said lent itself to a Tango/Foxtrot/Argentine Tango.
Paso Doble
Boy this dance was devoid of drama and passion and the smell of spanish onions. There was 20 seconds doing the same thing over again (that thing you do with the arms to do the cape thingy). The arrangement of the song didn’t get my pulse racing. It ended up being a damp squib Hardly any interplay with Artem bless him he was a spare part in the Valenrue campaingn. I felt sorry for him and Peta and what about poor widdle Henry spare a thought that was not chosen. For the first time this series i actually liked her dress. In all honesty i preferred Janel and Zendaya’s efforts.
In in all she in my marking scale would have got 2 8s maybe a 7 in the Rumba.
Odd enough, I actually enjoyed Chris’ contemporary dance. I know he barely moved in that routine and Witney danced around him, but that was actually a smart move on her part. She concealed Chris’ weaknesses by making him do lifts. And that is something we usually see in many contemporary dances, men as lifters and props (for the lack of a better term).
From reading comments on here I’m glad I didn’t watch or DVR the show last night and don’t plan on watching tonight either. I still haven’t finished last weeks show and probably won’t.
I watched Nastia/Sasha/Derek’s dances on youtube. I loved them both, but I tend to like dances that are more theatrical and tell a story. I LOVED Nastia’s attitude in the Paso. The music was kind of muted on the trio dance so that was kind of distracting, but it may have been my PC. The boys could have helped pull her up from the couch a little quicker though. Poor thing was dangling there. LOL
I loved Derek’s IG post protecting Nastia. #Josi #172 I’ve got to find that livestream of Derek telling the producers that’s your problem! You go Derek! I love Derek, but now I think I’m going to have to LOVE Derek.
I’m sure Val will have help from Maks, Peta, Henry, Artem and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Peta, Henry and Artem in said Freestyle. They are part of ‘the fam’ after all…maybe Tony will appear as well?
Rumba is supposed to be a soft-romantic dance…I didn’t see that at all last night..nor did I see any hip action on Rumer’s part. as I’ve said on Insta and FB, if Derek had choreographed that routine, the Judges would’ve handed him his arse on a platter and rightfully so because there was so little Rumba content but when Val dances it…it’s worth of a perfect 40??? and people have the audacity to say that Derek is the favorite? The irony…,most times I just don’t bother because the C-bro fans are highly delusional.
And, Michelle, that’s twice this season that the package has pissed him off. It’s about damn time, is for sure.
Yeah, I think that Derek may have just reached his BS limit. Funny, TPTB aren’t very smart. They want their cake (Derek) and to eat it too (Val for the win, so he can be the new it boy) – and for that to happen, you piss on the cake. Pretty stupid.
I usually try to ignore the pimpage and just vote for whoever I like but I’m pretty over it at this point. I persoanlly feel like Rumer has to be struggling vote wise, just because of the comments that have been made on air about voting. But they want her to win so they don’t really care. And people go on and on about Derek being the favorite, what a joke!
Heidi as Sharna said on the actual dance floor when their Rumba package was airing. “One Fight, One fight” says it all really doesn’t it?
Dee2, the livestream is posted on PDH. Derek is laughing when he says it, but he clearly believes it, I think. He says, “that’s so not my problem” or something like that. 🙂
Nathan and Epmusic, I couldn’t agree with you more. Rumer’s paso doble fell flat in so many levels. Although Rumer was graceful and precise with her movements, the passion and intensity was not just there. The choreography lacked creativity, and the song wasn’t powerful enough to call for some dynamic movements. I’d give it a 35/40.
Wow Rob Wade u just did what the previous producers couldn’t do in 14 seasons. You messed with Derek & Partner so much he is no longer being quiet about. Good for him.
When I think of all the BS he(and his partners) have put up with over the years it makes me angry, but this season takes the cake. Derek has done so much for this show and this it how u treat him.
I just hope we get to see them in the finals,
Power rankings are up: https://www.puredwts.com/2015/05/05/puredwts-season-20-week-8-power-rankings/
The thing that frustrates me most is the judges scores. It sucks that it’s 50% of determining who stays and who goes. You can see how happy some celebs are with the judges comments only to turn around and be deflated by the numbers that correlate. I wish they would just comment and constructively criticize without the scores. It does nothing but send mixed signals and manipulate things even more.
Judyl #169, I sincerely hope that, too. Agreed with everyone who said that Derek has finally reached his limit and is not taking any more of this BS from TPTB. Glad he stood up for Nastia. Like Josi #174 said, Nastia & Derek have had 3 unflattering packages as compared to the others who are still in the competition. Seems like tptb is bent on putting them in a bad light. Hope this season Derek re-thinks his loyalty to the show. I know he loves it, but he can express his love for it in a different way. I love watching him on my screen, creating amazing dances for his celeb partners. But I don’t want him to endure this BS anymore. He’s too good for the show, in every way.
Just for anyone who is curious!
Syllabus content in Rumer’s rumba:
basic international rumba step
alemana
fan
natural top (back spot turn)
numerous telespins
standing spin
inside swivels
As for the arrangement, I loved it! I’ve danced a very similar version of Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps on the latin competition floor myself. I loved the whole performance in general. It is such classic, traditional rumba. I think that is the reason the judges (especially Julianne) gushed over it–it’s very competition style, and I think that is refreshing. Sure, her hip action and foot weight aren’t at the professional standard, but frankly NO ONE is going to have professional-quality hip action or foot weight without years of practice.
I love how they payed homage to Strictly Ballroom (one of my favorite dance movies) in their paso! I thought it was fierce, full, and fabulous!
On a similar vein, I also loved Nastia and Sasha’s paso. I thought the gladiator concept was super cool (especially considering a century is a batallion of 100 Roman soldiers, so that’s neat). Their jive concept was also really unique, but it wasn’t my favorite jive I’ve ever seen. That spot is still reserved for Charlie and Sharna 🙂
It kind of irritated me that no one commented on the rise and fall of Rallison’s vwaltz (proper vwaltz should only “look” like it has rise and fall which comes from sway, not from actual foot rise), but I did enjoy the other moments of fluidity that we hadn’t really seen from Riker yet.
I also didn’t hate Chris’ contemporary. He’s growing on me! I have NO idea why it was scored higher than Robert’s though.
Same goes for Noah’s salsa. That routine (especially the armography) was amazeballs.
I think, in general, everyone stepped up their game this week which is nice to see!
charlie/indi – One name please. And I think many of us are quite aware of what was in Rumer’s rumba – so no, we’re not curious about the syllabus content.
OK, I’m as far as the end of Riker and Allison’s round 1 in my definitely-not-illegal British viewing, and I’ve not been terribly impressed by anything thus far. DEEPLY unimpressed at the (admittedly fleeting, but still) mention of Vajanel in Noah’s package. Riker’s Viennese was good enough for maybe one 10, but 3 seems excessive. I will say though, Allison has suddenly earned her place on the show for me. That penguin bit was hysterical!
@Mr. A – I live my life in that interesting little grey area between “illegal” and simply “frowned upon” 🙂 Also, congrats on the new princess!
Mr A and Courtney hahaha. Exactly how i do DWTS and Thanks for the Princess mention
LOVE the princess’ name. I was going to be sorely disappointed if they didn’t manage to work Diana into it. And Charlotte is just an adorable name, and my middle name is Elizabeth, so…:-)
If it weren’t for the judges, Rumer, Riker and Nastia could all go home this week and next. Something to keep in mind when complaining about the judges scores being half.
@EPmusic #183 – I agree. I want to like Rumer and I do feel like she is a talented dancer but I just can’t bring myself to support her and I know that is in large part due to Val. If she was to win this season, based on amazing routines and a true journey, I would be OK with that. But to orchestrate a victory for Val, through her, and to have the amount and level of obvious pimpage that is occurring make it incredibly difficult to want to even watch at all. I still haven’t seen Rumer and Val’s routines from last night and have no plans to, simply because I do not want to witness the spectacle.
Personally, I don’t feel like it mattered that much that they cushioned Rumer so hard this week. They pimped Janel all the way to the final last year and she did nothing with it. It’s not like at this stage she’s likely to be ousting any more talented dancers that aren’t already gone (Poor Willow, but I digress.) More watchable dancers, more entertaining dancers, more likeable dancers, more deserving dancers; sure. I would argue that Noah is all 4 but whatever happens now he can be so proud. Hate to admit it, but I did really love Rumer’s Rumba (sorry guys.) You could certainly say it was a bit too sultry, a bit expected, a bit predictably over-intense, a bit Flamenco (which I think might be a more apt comparison than Tango) but damn, it was technically well executed and I enjoyed it a lot. One thing I don’t like is that Val’s trademark “still moment of intense staring” was him standing in front of her staring into the camera, which is a glimpse at Val’s state-of-mind if ever I saw it. I’m not advocating for 4 10s, but the highest score of round 1 I think I can agree with. As for Nastia, that performance was fierce, which I was so impressed with because that’s always been where the gymnasts struggled and she nailed the passionate intensity I love about the paso. Just a touch more shaping and it would have been an all-time great routine. I can accept her 36, it seems a fair score in isolation, but in comparison to Riker and Rumer, she should not have been that far behind. It’s also interesting that after round 1 when they gave the scores they only gave this week’s, when last week’s are also factored into tonight’s elimination. Was it to avoid confusion, or to herald Rumer’s 40 more? I know which side I lean towards. Now, on to round 2.
#204- @ MichLee. Could not have said it any better. That is how I am feeling.
You can like a dance, Mr A, and feel it was vastly over scored, especially in comparison to Riker and Nastia.
I think Tom should have said to abc.com “check your website and make sure the votes are registering properly” I vote for the same couple every week and sometimes it says I voted for an entirely different couple or shows another couple’s highlights. It leads me to wonder if the voting is getting to the right couple.
Anyway, I don’t think the phone number comment was meant for just Rumer I think it was for all the numbers in general. It just seemed that way because they were the last dance and they were pressed for time (AS ALWAYS).
My thoughts on the dances:
Neither one of Noah’s really did anything for me. Unmemorable.
Chris was ok in the Contemporary but the trio was a hot mess.
Riker’s V Waltz was ok but I don’t think it showed his vulnerability as much as they wanted and it was too fast. Their trio was pretty good.
Robert’s first dance was fine but just mediocre in my opinion. The trio was a mess as he missed several steps.
Nastia’s first dance to me was a good paso but it was awkward having Derek just sitting there staring into the abyss. And I agree with Julianne, He did look kind of silly. Loved his comment about Mark LOL. Their trio, while unconventional in what we are used to seeing, was a pretty good concept. Would I call it a trio in the actual sense, not really but it worked for what Derek’s limitations are right now and I think it was fun.
Rumer and Val’s Rumba was AMAZING! I think it works for them to stick to the simplicity of the dance and not use all the bells and whistles. I’m glad Val finally realized he was taking the fun out of the experience. The Paso Trio was great too. Artem and Val let Rumer be the focal point.
My predictions for the double Elimination: Robert and Chris and if one of them survives then Noah. I think the other three are safe given their high scores.
Well it sounds like just about everyone has found a double-elimination result that will make them unhappy! My two cents is as follows, I have found things to like in Noah, Chris and Robert, BUT they should be gone before Willow. I see that some people thought that Chris did well in his contemporary, but I thought that he butchered it, he kept on repositioning his feet, and it was really distracting. I think that Nastia, Riker and Rumer deserve to be in the finals. I don’t get all of the Val/Rumer vitriol. Did you guys ever notice that Val is a truly exceptional male dancer? I feel lucky to be able to watch these guys dance. In my house, we love Derek AND Mark and Val. Best of luck to everyone tonight, we did our part and voted.
Oh, I don’t know what to think, except that I went into the show feeling very jaded, and came out of it less so. It is definitely possible, though, that I liked the Rumba because it reminded me of dance styles I prefer to the rumba, like Tango and Flamenco. It’s hard to argue with her execution, which was exceptional, but the choreography wasn’t what it could have been. Thoughts on the first half of round 2:
Noah- The dancing was pretty good, so hats off to Noah, but everything else off to Sharna because the choreography was extraordinary. In many ways, arms are everything in salsa, so the fact that he’s missing one is an even bigger deal here than usual, and what Sharna did with it was so clever, especially in the classic crossing-arms moves. I’d have given him at least a few more points. If they want a pro who’s earned a win, it’s definitely Sharna.
Chris- Catastrophe. It was actually pretty tough on him having nearly the exact same setup as Alfonso for this, but it ended up less Turn Down for What, more Turn Up for Why? Almost no shaping, limited content done at a glacial pace, very little in the way of drama (not helped by a pretty low-key song to be fair) and just no real wow. Worst of the night, easily.
Riker- For me, a sudden, unexpected and disappointing return to unlikeable. He just seemed very cocky, and just generally annoyed me in some way. The dance was good, but the jerkiness of the whole thing didn’t work for me.
Eric, deal with the fact that some don’t care for Val and don’t lecture people.
One thing which amused me about Val was that he made a big deal about his body, and he and Artem being objectified (while fondling Artem I might add.) The only case I can actually think of when someone was “forced” to dance shirtless was Tony in his Argentine Tango with Nene last season, and even then it’s not like he’s ever seemed shy about his body. It’s tough buying anything Val especially says on that particular subject, after last week’s refresher course in the Hell that was his and Kelly’s Surfer Flamenco.
