PureDWTS Season 20, The Finals – Power Rankings
Well, that was a pleasant little finale night – not terribly exciting, but pleasant nonetheless 🙂 I found that, for the first time, all three of the freestyles felt a little bit…recycled to me. They were still nice to watch, but none of them jumped out at me as something totally fresh and never-before-seen. I guess we’re reaching that point in the lifespan of the show where “it’s all been done”, but still – sometimes I miss that sense of wonder of the early seasons, when “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy” was the most innovative freestyle ever, or when Apolo & Julianne danced “Bust a Move” blindfolded. *sigh* It’s bittersweet.
Can’t say I’m too surprised at anything the judges said or any of the scores they gave – still think they’re pulling for Rumer to win and have pretty much ensured that Noah won’t run away with the MBT, but I think Riker stands a decent chance at playing spoiler to the “Valenrue” pimping machine we’ve seen all season. Will be interesting to see how things shake out tomorrow night, for sure. For tonight, I’m just thankful that I managed to get all of my phone votes in already, and that the show was only an hour long – got a cheesecake to make and a new MAC eyeshadow palette I want to play with 😉
3rd place: Noah & Sharna
Had Noah not slightly bungled his redo Argentine tango, I think my rankings could have looked different tonight – but alas, by handicapping him 8 points behind both Rumer & Riker, I think he’s gonna have a pretty tough row to hoe in order to get any better than 3rd place – and that’s even though I think he’s getting a LOT of votes, still. I have to commend him, though – the commitment I saw from him in the first 20ish seconds of his Argentine tango was the most comfortable and in the zone as I’ve seen him all season…he was dialed in, no doubt. I think he maybe got slightly off-time on one step, though, and it seemed to throw him a little off his game for the rest of the dance – a bit of a bobbled lift, and he also seemed to lose the confidence he started with. Not sure I would have docked a whole 8 points for it, but I can’t say I was entirely surprised to see the judges take advantage of the chance to give him a bit of a handicap against Rumer & Riker by doling out straight 8’s. His freestyle was lovely, though – and I was floored at how well he handled that star lift. No bobbles there, and he only had 1 arm to support her! 🙂 Overall, I don’t think Noah placing 3rd is anything to be ashamed of – the dude overcame some pretty ridiculous odds to make it all this way, and I daresay he’s proven that he’s a decent dancer, PERIOD…and not just a decent dancer, for being an amputee. And I’ve loved watching every step of the journey 🙂
Runner-up: Rumer & Val
I think the fact that these two kinda went the safe route on a night when another couple (Riker & Allison) took more risks may ultimately relegate them to 2nd place. Honestly, kinda shocked that the judges (or Rumer & Val, or whoever picked the redo dances) picked their foxtrot for them to redo – I wouldn’t exactly say that it was their most impactful dance, nor was it particularly well-executed or interesting to watch. I found it kind of odd & flaily on premiere night…and I found it odd & flaily tonight, too. Just…hmmm. Also, food for thought: for last season’s redo dances, those who picked their week 1 dances to redo (Alfonso & Bethany) were required to add an extra 30 seconds of content in order to make the dances longer, since the week 1 routines are so short. They didn’t make that requirement this week…why? Just something to contemplate. As for their freestyle – eh. Felt like a garden-variety Argentine tango – and part of me wonders if they were just so set on doing Argentine tango at some point (remember, they thought they had it last week for the judges’ choice!) that they just reworked their original routine a bit in order to turn it into some semblance of a freestyle. I get that Val was going for the “stripped-down, back to basics” look (hehe…where have I heard that before?), but in the process, I think they lost a bit of what makes the freestyle special: that knock-your-socks-off performance value. This was nice to watch – but it didn’t leave me feeling forever changed or dazzled.
Winner: Riker & Allison
I think these two came into the finale with the right strategy: knock ’em dead with 2 showstopping dances. God bless that pirate paso doble – I think Riker could have easily slayed any dance that Rumer may have redone with this number…it was THAT good, and he was even more on-point doing it tonight. As I mentioned on Twitter – I kind of love how committed Riker is to the character of Captain Jack. When that costume goes on, he’s 100% Jack, and his technique is flawless. And then the freestyle – it felt like a bit of a riff on Alfonso’s freestyle last season, but I loved that dance so much that this really felt like almost a sequel or a remix. A really nice combination of the old and the new, and Allison killed the choreo…even saw a few signature Twitch moves thrown in 😉 And that bit at the end with Riker dancing with the guys in the troupe? A few times, I thought I saw Derek up there – he’s got that same great quality of movement and sense of ease onstage that D has. When it all boils down tomorrow night, I think Riker may have played all the right cards – because I think full-out and flashy won out against simple and stripped down tonight.
So what freestyles did you enjoy the most/least? And who do you guys think will win? 🙂
I agree that the freestyles all seemed “kind of recycled” I didn’t like that Noah’s song was one that Amy Purdy used…with her it was powerful, with him, it seemed like this is the song we use for people who have overcome great obstacles. Still, emotionally powerful. Riker’s freestyle looked a lot like Alfonso’s freestyle from last year. Rumer’s freestyle…all that black…I don’t like when the dancing can’t be seen well due to the staging. Will be interesting to see what the outcome will be. I do agree that it will come down to Riker or Rumer.
It was a nice enough show but didn’t exactly wow me as far as finals go, which is a shame because I enjoyed the semis so much. Not sure if it was just because the episode felt rushed but probably my favorite routine of the night was Riker’s Paso.
It really is a shame Noah bobbled his first dance. If he had gotten say straight 9s I think he would actually probably win it. I would probably place Rumer in 3rd as far as my preference for the night but I just have this sinking feeling she’s winning. I would LOVE to see Riker win but I just worry about his freestyle. I thought it was fun and a great dance but something was lacking for me, and I say that as a Riker fan. I think it was the music. Don’t get me wrong though, Rumer’s freestyle didn’t do anything for me either but I just have a feeling people have been brainwashed at this point.
Riker clearly won the first round though…the reaction from the judges and the audience was incredible!
Moreavamc, Noah’s song was not the same as Amy’s, not even all that similar actually as Noah’s was mashup of two songs “Titanium” and “Fix You” by two different artists. Amy’s freestyle song was just one song and not either of those used by Noah.
@moravamc I agree that Riker’s freestyle looked a lot like Alfonso’s…down to some of the moves the troupe was doing and the way they were dressed.
I hope to see Rumer get 3rd, but I think Demi and Bruce have called in a lot of favors to have people tweet out support for her…hell this is the first time Ashton threw his support out for her.
I hope Noah will be able to place better than 3rd, I just love him!
My ideal would be: (1) Noah (2) Riker (3) Rumer
Realistically I think it is going to be: (1) Rumer (2) Riker (3) Noah
I think Noah might be able to overtake Riker for 2nd, but not sure
Amy danced to Titanium during her most memorable year…I just hear that song and think of her…didn’t even realize that there were 2 songs spliced together…I don’t think that I’ll be the only person to have that reaction.
No she didn’t. Amy danced to Human by Christina Perri for her most memorable year. Titanium is ny David Guetta and Sia. Honestly, they are no where near the same song.
@moravamc – Are you sure you’re not thinking of Ali’s most memorable year in season 16?
My opinion is that Riker’s freestyle was underwhelming. I liked the slower opening & kept waiting for the music to kick in & for them to just bust a move & keep it up (like his trio), but that didn’t happen. Even his package was boring. He really has no story & they are a drama free pair. I would rank him 3rd.
Riker left the door open for Noah. Even though we have heard Noah’s story 100 times it still fit with his dance & that moves people. I did feel like I had seen his dance throughout the season. He is 2nd for me.
I am a Val fan who has hated his freestyles in the past. I watched Zendaya’s & knew she was going to lose. Kelly & Janel’s freestyles-no thanks. I’m glad he finally did what he is good at for Rumer. Trying to do something that he is not has not worked in the past & that is not fair to his partners. Rumer is the winner for me.
All of that said, I wouldn’t be surprised to see any of them win. I have enjoyed each of them this season & what they brought to the show as individuals & dancers.
#Michelle I apologize…they seemed the same to me…I honestly (obviously) don’t listen to a lot of pop music. I will stand by my statement/opinion that it sounds like a repeat of the same theme.
@ DLT, I feel the same way about Riker’s Freestyle: I thought it was good (and my favorite of the three) but I didn’t like their music. I still voted for them though. I’m glad they re-did their Pirate Paso, I thought that was one of their best dances. I just hope the judges don’t underscore their fusion dance tomorrow (if they do a good job, that is).
@Moreavamc, “Titanium” was used in Aly’s Contemporary S16 and “Fix You” was used in Kelly’s Contemporary in S15. Amy’s Freestyle song was “Dare You.” I actually thought the ending of Noah’s Freestyle reminded me a lot of Aly’s ending in her Contemporary with Mark.
# Courtney – you’re probably right…I just am starting to feel like same songs are used over and over, whether it’s for celeb dances, pro numbers or bumpers.
In terms of freestyles for me. I’m kind of tied with Riker and Noah being at the top. Noah’s was just stunning and Sharna did an amazing job with the choreography. Riker’s was just fun and he killed it.
Val and Rumer’s just was a typical Val bust when it comes to freestyle. It was like a standard A. Tango with nothing freestyle about it. It was what you see on any other week on this show. All that hype for a standard piece? How he is still so inept at the freestyle? He’s been a pro how long? And had how many shots? Makes no sense.
Kudos for Allison and Riker with sticking with their style all season. No drama all about giving it their all and keeping in fun/fresh. They have had the least exposure, lowest airtime of packages compared to everyone and NOW they don’t get to hear full comments NOR get to speak at all with Erin….Totally frustrated and beyond annoyed!!!
I”m voting for Riker, but I gotta say, now I don’t care if Rumer wins. After that freestyle if Val and Rumer wins, the show is just making itself look stupid. If they want to prop up a pro who can’t even create freestyle, let them. They are just dooming their own future.
If Rumer & Val win, their Freestyle will go down in DWTS history as one of the most boring, lackluster Freestyles ever (in my opinion). Val needs to stop practicing the violin and start working on becoming a better choreographer – as well as a better sportsman.
I am going with Rumer, Noah, Riker. I rewatched the freestyles, I am liking Rumers more than the first time. It might be my new softness for Val owning up that he struggles with the freestyle (not the image that is cast upon him)
I liked Noah’s freestyle much better than Rikers. I just felt like with Riker, I was watching a dance team competition and after sitting thru 15 years of competitive dance team it was lackluster and circa 15 year old girls.
Off topic, But Demi looks fabulous, holy smokes! I wanted to be her in high school, shoot, Bruce looked pretty good tonight too. I used to Crush on him..ha!
At the beginning of the season, I was rooting for Rumer full-on. Then Riker caught my attention. He has been the most funky, slick, on-point competitor this season. I didn’t actually expect him to last this long. I have been, and continue to be, amazed by his dancing talents, and not just hip-hop or jazz. The way he gracefully catches up to the ballroom dances. I am astonished by him. He deserves to win. He is, if I am correct, the only competitor to have never fallen in scores (except that time he went from 38 to 37. It’s not a fall). He improved each week or maintained the same score as the previous week. I am voting and rooting for Riker all the way. He HAS to be in the Top 2. And I seriously hope the fans see it that he deserves the mirror ball trophy. Val, if you want it so badly, learn to corporate. #TeamRallison
I really think Rumer & Val are going to win. Too much deja-vu to S18 for me, I think the media and the show has pushed the agenda too much and people really buy into it when it’s so overdone. If Noah had higher scores I would think he really has a chance, but he’s so far behind. They usually say running order doesn’t matter at this point, but I do think if Rumer had gone first in the order tonight, I think it would have hurt since her dances were both stripped down and plain. They needed her to go last so people wouldn’t forget her after the fun of Riker or the emotion of Noah.
I think I’m most disappointed that this is an anniversary season with a special mirrorball and we were expecting to see some really memorable stuff….but the couple that is being pushed to win is pleasant to watch, but also the most one-note couple, with no real improvement, and didn’t even have anything creative in their freestyle.
I wasn’t blown away by anything tonight but I think Riker & Allison did win the night overall. Witney & Alfonso had a non-drama partnership and no romantic chemistry and not a real sob story either and they won America over, so maybe Riker can do it too. I voted Riker because I think he has the best shot given the scores.
I would love to see the agenda fail tomorrow. If it doesn’t though, I will be happy for next season’s pros and celebs, because hopefully the agenda will be gone. I do miss the older seasons at times with less theme weeks and I do like just seeing straight dancing with no gimmicks (but here and there, not the entire season). But I mostly miss the days where this show manipulated very little.
Val needs to stop whining and crying and feeling sorry for himself. Geez. Be a man and work at getting better. He knows he has to do a freestyle every season. Take some classes or get some help. What a waste. Rumer deserved better.
Riker and Allison for the win!! Vote everyone!!! He deserves it over Val!!
@Jane #15 Let’s not forget Melissa’s freestyle in All Stars. I remember watching that and thinking, dang, she screwed it up big time for herself…and then she won.
Riker definitely took the night for me, but I don’t think the judges “talked him up” enough, if you get what I mean. I think Rumer did a lovely argentine tango, but it got me upset, because it was like “Why couldn’t Val do a decent argentine tango….when he HAD an Argentine Tango?” That and I got the feeling (not a fact, just a feeling) that he was trying to “show everyone a ‘proper’ ballroom freestyle, as if only he could do it or knew how to. It just rubbed me off the wrong way.
Heh, some dumb ass troll just said in the discussion post that Derek copied the “stripped down” Tony and Melissa’s freestyle for Kellie. She clearly doesn’t remember the over the top staging of that freestyle.
Dude, not all contemporaries are created equally. Melissa’s was just bad. Which of course makes me worry that Rumer will end up winning with a crap freestyle.
After some media realized the “game” TPTB are creating, all eyes are on them. The credibility of this show will go down the drain and many viewers will be turned off if they are still insisting on playing their game tomorrow. Anyway, always enjoy your Power Rankings, Court. I didn’t watch the show but I feel like you sums up the entire 1 hour into 1 short article. Appreciate all you ladies hard work on this site.
For me, Riker won the first round hands down. For freestyle, I liked Noah the best. I thought he really danced and the choreo was so amazing and fit the routine. Yes it was similar to their other but his quality of movement was smoother and the choreo was a little more complex for him. The 1 arm lift was great. I’m not a Noah fan but I liked it. Rivers freestyle to me was derivative of Cheryl and Jack O but Cheryl’s was more exciting. The older style did not work for me and it didn’t have his exuberance. The best part was at the end and he raced up in the platform to dance in front if the troop solo. I definitely thought Alfonso’s freestyle was not good last year- underwhelming to his week 1 dance before Carlton injury. After that his dancing was 75% and he got a lot scoring gifts due to his body of work earlier in season and his general like ability. Comparisons to Alfonso’s freestyle aren’t flattering. For him, that was a big miss. I like Rumors 2nd best. I liked the steamy sultry quality. Dancing an AT bare foot without the proper forware was unattractive and the sharpness of lines was diminished clearly. Pointed toes didn’t cut it. It wasn’t exciting or great but it was interesting. I’d give them 2nd in that round.
Weighing all, I feel Riker took it tonight due to Noah’s first dance. I still believe tptb will help Rumor win. They will score Rumor over Riker on Tuesday. As you may remember, last year and Janel and Val visually tripped in their QS and the judges said, I don’t care that they stumbled , 10! We’re in for that Tues. I like Rumor OK but she is deluding herself that they got this far by fan votes. Binge watch 10 seasons and then look at all the gifts in scoring, OTT praise for same infractions that were sharply criticized for other dancers routinely over the years,, placement in show, songs, coverage in website, other advertising etc and she may be amazed. Good dancer but not the preordained best, not the best dancer this season but she will take MBT. After all the winner must be going on DWTS tour and Allison and Sharna arent on tour.
I just deleted the DWTS Finals show from my DVR. What a disappointment,
with NO DEREK Freestyle, & the rushed up comments & interviews at the end.
The repeat dances would have been more exciting to watch with an additional
challenge or change added from the judges.
The Freestyles were underwhelming, with Riker’s coming the closest to an actual
all-out there routine, so that’s how I voted.
The semi-final round was more exciting, electric and on point than this hour long
retread.
I wish Derek & Nastia could somehow go rogue on the show tomorrow & showcase
the ‘freestyle that almost was’…I’d even watch a rehearsal of it!
Honestly, I think it’s fixed that Rumer will win. I just have a weird feeling that it’s going to be Rumer/Riker in the final 2 with Rumer winning.
…and then we can anticipate DWM, Fam, Zeyndaya, etc. being excessively annoying on twitter
Zendaya annoys me to no end, especially after she was on DWTS. She thinks she’s so awesome. I hate how she took a bohemian comment about her hippie hair on a tv show and accused the commenter as being racist. She and Val derserved each other.
My wish is for 1.) Riker 2.) Noah 3.) Rumer tomorrow night
What will probs happen, 1.) Rumer 2.) Riker 3.) Noah
If Val wins, we will never hear the end of it. Maks and Val liken winning a MBT to winning an Olympic Gold Medal.
And he is already starting to get obnoxious. He just tweeted: “So proud of us.” This guy (and Maks) don’t have a humble bone in their entire bodies.
For the record, Noah is about 3.4% behind Rumer and Riker.
Thing is, I have so little clue how the voting is breaking down. Any of them could be over 40 percent, IMO.
Disagree with the power rankings. Riker is going to lose because Allison blew the freestyle. It was not good and way too busy, and yeah it reminded me of Alfonso’s last season with the production and what it was going for. Fave dance of the night was his paso but Rumer clearly won the freestyle, and I am positive she is going to win. I thought it was smart of Val to go with a tango, they are often his best routines regardless of the celeb.
I know I sound like a broken record, since I have said it before here, but if Val does win, I hope he follows Maks lead, and quits DWTS. A DWTS season that would be Chmerkovskiy free, would be a dream.
I felt like the finals were a tad rushed. I know it was only an hour, but damn, give all the judges time to talk, and the couples a chance to catch their breath.
3rd Place: Noah & Sharna; while these two have shown week after week that they have earned their spot in the finals, tonight I think the pressure got to them during the first round. They managed to make up for it in the second round with a heart wrenching freestyle.
Runner-Up: Riker & Allison; they have been nothing but entertainment the whole season. I didn’t even want to like them in the beginning, but they ended up growing on me. Both of their dances tonight were great, but so over the top that it kinda took away from the dancing between just the two of them.
Winners: Rumer & Val; from the very first week, I was on board with these two. They had a few bumps along the way, but have proven that they can get back up when they have been knocked down. Along with earning more perfect scores than any of the other couples, they have had the most dynamic performances that can never be topped. What I loved the most about them is their chemistry. I have never been this invested with a couple ever.
That is how I see the final results.
Wow Rumer is even getting Miley Cyrus, Sophia Vegara etc…. to vote for them….I HIGHLY doubt they even watch this show !
And its seems even Sadie Robertson too ! All this makes me sick to my stomach
Miley Cyrus is friends with Rumer’s sisters, I love Sadie, she made a good choice. But seriously, who can top the Presidents wife backing Noah…he may just be the one to win it
Mikey Cyrus is voting for Rumer, and then you have the First Lady and Jill Biden tweeting support for Noah, in addition to quite a few more.
OMG, I thought I read that you were going to write the cheesecake and got so excited! But then realized you were baking one – boo for me, but hope it was yummy.
First final I haven’t watched in probably 10 seasons – just didn’t want to see the pimping – and still recovering from Derek & Nastia not being in the finals…
Honestly, I think its a race between Rumer & Riker. I don’t want Val to win, but Rumer & Val are getting the pimping spot and PR. Noah was astounding for his freestyle, but it again focused on his story more than anything else. I also just don’t think votes will be enough to make up for Noah’s mishap. 8 points are pretty hard to be behind by. Rumer is an amazing dancer, but I am tired of Val using her to show “ballroom only” and to show one-sidedness. Riker & Allison’s freestyle was surprising for me. I actually half expected him to just do modern stuff. While it may have seemed “underwhelming” for some people, to me it showed his versatility. It also showed that he can improv very well (the platform and pros were having issues toward the end of it if you watch closely). It really comes down to “how many supporting celebrities & fans can help each couple”. Rumer has plenty on her side, but I also noticed Riker has some popular faces and Tweeters on his side as well! Noah getting backings from people may help him, but I just don’t see him getting the mirror ball. I hope Riker wins, but it really is a matter of personal taste and judgement.
Interesting fact I read on twitter. “Riker did improv to get to the stage in time toward the end. The front part of the moving platform fell off and the pros were struggling to get the platform to the other stage in time.” I already thought their dance was amazing, but this just shows what a great performer he is. He’s been fun to watch and has gotten all my votes for sure!
Noah’s freestyle was really good too, and so moving! Sharna did amazing!
Val’s was my least favorite. It was a great dance! But with a freestyle as a viewer I have certain expectations in mind and the dance didn’t leave up to it nor did it surprise me.
Can i just say how proud i am 2 be a derek fan he showed again that no 1n can touch him not only as a creative genius but for the extraordinary man he is, supporting every1n cheering in red room all the while then tweeting support 2 all so dam proud. he is born with class and carries himself in style.
Rumer was good hot sexy but val was poopy stip down and show wat Rumer is? So, Rumer is all dark nd sexy tats all is ter 2 her as per Val. She did amaazing with wat was given 2 her
Noah, my God no words for it brilliant just brilliant.
Riker wins this 4me hands down that paso was dope and FS was kickass voted 4 u buddy hope he wins he desreves it Rummer 2 but since she paired with poopy val her bad luck if she does not win
Wow, this is how a finale without a Derek freestyle looks like :))) I felt we were back to season 2 or 3 that s how basic and safe everything was.
I wasn’t overly excited for the finale ever since I saw who was there.
For me, Noah is a great guy but I like good dancing and he can t be compared with the rest when it comes to dancing. Than there is Ricker who is a good dancer but I don t like Allison. She seems sweet but I can t watch her dance, she is all over the place, she doesn’t have the smoothness for ballroom dancing and her facial expressions are too much. I apologize to her fans, that is just my opinion. I like Rumer and she is a wonderful dancer but no matter how much I try it is impossible to like VAL. He has and always had such good partners and he still whines and acts like the fates are against him.
The freestyle were so boring. Ricker hopped around the stage most of the time, Noah was just ok, and Val did an AT. There was nothing special or freestylish ab them. Val and Rumer will probably win. I gotta say TPTB have gotten so good at manipulating, they were always good but now they really get results.
Larry King. Ashton Kutcher. Miley Cyrus. Sofia Vergara. Demi Moore. Sadie Robertson. Zendaya. Etc … etc … etc … Rumer and Val roll. Simple as that.
Las Vegas betting odds closed with Rumer and Val at 2/5 … that is a ridiculously low betting line. Lowest anyone has been all season, with Nastia and Derek coming closest at 2/3 odds. Riker and Allison closed at 7/4 odds and Noah was way back at 12-1 with Sharna to close it.
Final note … I am with Len … the couples dancing with groups aka backup dancers on any occasion is lame … it deflects attention away from the actual couple … producers need to ban those group-assisted dances.
I would a agree with this for the most part. Although I must say that I feel like the only person who really liked Rumers freestyle. Wasn’t my most favorite ever but I did like it more than Noah’s. Random question, but that 24 hour fusion dances aren’t choreographed/ rehearsed all after tonight’s show are they? I saw Val favorite Tweets for hours after the show tonight lol.
Allison and Riker have Ellen Degeneres on their side.
I started off not liking Rumer at all as she came across as super cocky. However, throughout the season I have grown to really like her. She seems to be a very sweet girl and she certainly is an excellent dancer. After hearing about the bullying she suffered, her over confidence was probably just a front. Taking Val out of the mix, I really hope Rumer wins. I enjoy watching her dance and it’s not her fault that Val is an idiot.
To be honest, I was quite annoyed after watching Riker and Allison’s freestyle. It was a definite copy of Witney and Alfonso’s incredible freestyle last season! Very similar concept, costumes, choreo etc… I’m so surprised the judges didn’t say anything. I think it was a bad move on Allison’s part…people will compare both freestyles and Witney+Alfonso’s freestyle was FAR superior in my opinion. It’s such a shame as Riker is capable of amazing things. I love him as a dancer, he is very talented. I wonder what Witney thought of Allison copying her work? I guess they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!
@Kathleen I’m pretty sure Witney and Allison are friends so I’m sure she doesn’t mind. I saw a couple of times where Witney copied other professional ballroom dancers routines last season (not pros on the show). But Allison and Witney aren’t the first pros to copy and they wont be the last. This is DWTS after all. It’s entertainment first and foremost, not a real competition. Unless the original choreographer states other wise, I honestly don’t think it’s such a big deal.
Allison is very smart she made a very smart move choosing Captain Jack Paso plus her freestyle is also a good one not a fan of a song but still a good dance
Val is kinda smart too ,cos I think he come to the point knowing himself that he is not good (may be to the level of suck) choreo a freestyle so he play which his strange which is AT,i call it smart move, did’t watch his redo dance but kinda sure nothing can beat Captain Jack Paso
and we all know Noah will land at the 3rd so no need to talk about it
by the way it may off topic but it came to me that
as far as they still have dwts tour and move tour,Derek will never will this shiny ball again may be not even be a runner-up,I mean if I am a producer I will never let a ball do to another tour that have a same concept with my tour, hell they don’t even let Derek show his freestyle cos it may be promote him and his tour more
I didn’t watch so I really cannot say…but all I see are people on Facebook saying how much they loved Rumer and Val so I’m guessing that’s who will win because we KNOW TPTB have wanted it that way all along. But really, if that’s all Rumer & Val did, was a basic AT? With no props or xtra flair that makes a Freestyle memorable in this new format.
I see Derek posted support for Val & Rue on Instagram even going as far as to say this could be your year? He also supported Riker and Allison.
I’d LOVE for Riker and Allison to beat Rumer and Val but sadly, I don’t see that happening. 🙁
I think people are reminded of Alfonso mostly because of the styling and the top hats to be honest. If they didn’t have the top hats on, and the costumes looked different I doubt we’d hear the comparison. The dancing itself looked very different to me. Alfonso’s dance had a lot more in-hold, most of it was with Witney, except the part he tapped danced. Riker was dancing alone for most of the routine, and occasionally side by side with Allison. The whole style of Riker’s dancing is also different from Alfono’s.
@Kelly K Derek wrote a message to Noah as well so I don’t think he was in support of just one single couple but instead trying to be positive about everyone. Honestly I don’t blame him. I may have my favorites but I kind of hate the negativity the finale brings to the couples even if there’s pimping going on.
Val’s freestyle made me wonder if he ever contributed anything to their team dance during the spring break.
Oh Court, I’m loving your pick on the winner which is the same as mine.
Here are more of my thoughts and rankings for each dance. Riker and Allison won both rounds for me, so, I think he will win with Rumer and Val getting 2nd and Noah and Sharna getting 3rd.:
First Dance:
1. Riker and Allison – One of THE BEST DANCES of the season and on the show ever! It was magnificent before and it was even more magnificent AGAIN! EPIC! This will be one of those dances no one will ever forget.
2. Rumer and Val – They definitely improved this dance since the first time. She was so much more confident. Very good. Though it didn’t give me a huge moment like Riker and Allison.
3. Noah and Sharna – I just loved seeing their Argentine Tango again. Yes, there was a mistake and he seemed nervous, but, it was still beautiful and their lifts were off the hook again.
The Freestyle:
1. Riker and Allison – Omg, I just loved this routine. The brought an old era to life….and made it so cool, classy, charming, and modern. The choreography by Allison was perfection at it’s finest. The moves were out of this world. I want to watch this over and over.
2. Noah and Sharna – Wow, everything about him and their journey came together in this dance. The song couldn’t have been more perfect. They spoke from the heart with every move. Their lifts were incredible as well as the awesome choreography. Loved the back up dancers too. Excellent!
3. Rumer and Val – It was beautiful, but, it lacked content. It didn’t feel like a Freestyle in production like the others. I think it was Linz who said it felt like a repeat dance. So true too. Again, it was beautiful, but, it wasn’t as good as the other two imo.
I really was underwhelmed with this finals, especially the freestyles and especially after such a good show last monday.
First Round:
Ryker- LOVED this dance the first time and loved it the second time. I love how this guy commits to the characters and the dance without any hesitation.
Rumer- First week I said (as many others) that one of the problems I had with this dance is that it did not have a Foxtrot feel, and its partly the song’s fault (don’t get me wrong, I love the song is just not a Foxtrot). So I think there was improvement but was left feeling the same… was this a Foxtrot or their 7th contemporary/freestyle of the season? I think they tried to smile trough it to make it more “fun” and relaxed like a FT but it looked a bid odd with the song.
Noah- I was watching with my sister and she (who knows nothing about dance) got really exited and said “this is SO improved” …and then he messed up. I felt terrible at first because I thought she might have jinx it but, we were watching a couple of minutes behind on the DVR so that made me feel better. 😉 Anyways its a shame that he had that little misstep because he was doing so much better (and the judges had something to hang on)
Freestyle Round- I’m going to say overall that we did not see anything new and I personally believe this was the worst freestyle round (as a whole) since season 9. Regardless:
1- Noah- I think Sharna’s choreo was on point this time. And although I do not think it was something never seen before, it was emotional and it let me feeling proud and happy. And I thought it was the most dancing/moving he has done all the season. I think he should get the encore.
2- Ryker- I liked the intricacy in the choreo and the fact that it was the only fast pase freestyle. But I think (and I’m not alone for what I have read here) that it looked too similar to Alfonso’s freestyle, down to the costumes, sets and troupe involvement. Allison was in the show last season so I really don’t understand how she went that route. But other than this, it was fun, energetic, the only dance that really can be called a freestyle (as supposed to AT or Contemporary) and it separated him from the other two. His part with the guys was great, I love him and his commitment to the dances, it makes me feel happy.
3- Rumer- So, it was a good AT. But what was new or freestyle about it? If Val really wanted to do an AT he could have mixed some AT moves with other styes and give it some production value, which doesn’t necessarily mean other dancers and big sets but depth and story and surprise elements to keep the audience waiting to see what was coming. It was a good dance, and she did a good job, but IMO very bad for a freestyle. They could have done that any other week.
Because of the scores Noah got I gave all my votes to Ryker since I think he has the best chance. His fans carried him to the finals and with the support of Derek and Nastia’s fan I think he might have a real chance. Granted, if Noah’s scores were a little better I think he could also take it.
Re-reading and realized some spelling problems. Sorry :S
Mods, don’t we have any spoilers for the fusion dances?
Well, I am apparently in the minority in that I thought this was a really strong finals night with excellent performances from all three remaining couples – and I’ve watched all 20 seasons. Noah’s freestyle was a great surprise to me – fabulous job by Sharna on the choreography. I am with Len – I’m not a huge fan of all the extra bodies in the freestyle, but this would be the exception. Focus clearly remained strongly on Noah and the choreo did a beautiful job of making Noah’s differences in movement appear part of the piece!
Riker, I liked it, but I just expected more from them somehow. This felt frantic at times or hectic, and rather like a broadway number. While I liked it, it was 3rd place for me of freestyles.
Given that I’m not a fan of the extra dancers, I appreciated Rumer’s freestyle the most. It had great intensity and I felt it showcased her season as a whole beautifully. And for me, I don’t want to see a freestyle which has no connection to the season; I want to see it build on the season.
Obviously, people interpret and expect different things from ‘freestyle’. I truly like all of the remaining couples and will be happy with whomever wins. That being said, I’ve been a fan of Rumer’s from the first night, so my votes belong to her (despite my feelings about Val-lol!).
My 90 year old dad was screaming so much that I was distracted during the entire show. He was mad for different reasons than I was. He is just a casual viewer who doesn’t read internet discussions. He’s furious that Noah made the finale. He thinks the show is manipulating for Noah to win because of his story, and says Noah can’t do any ‘dancing’ like the others, on this ‘dancing show’ and that at least “Rumor danced”, but he’d be fine with Riker winning.
I guess there’s just not much new to see on this show anymore that excites me, especially without Derek in the finals. It was kind of a ho-hum finale for me, but Riker was the most entertaining and he didn’t make any mistakes that I could tell, and I love his Jack Sparrow persona. I voted for Riker.
Sad that Derek was robbed of the opportunity to compete for the golden ball. In spite of all his difficulties this season, he managed to pull off some amazing dances with Sasha’s help.
Something needs to change. I wish they would have the celebrities dance with a different pro for each dance, never dancing with the same pro twice. That’s the only way I think people will go back to voting for the celebrities rather than for or against a particular pro. On to next season.
I just realized we didn’t get a numerology/astrology post on the finalists this year. I miss it!
I’d rank the FS’s exactly as Courtney did.
I loved the mix of old school steps with a hip hop flair that Allison gave Riker. His confidence while dancing it was exhilarating too!
While I may not always like some of Allison’s choreography, I have to say she did an outstanding job of both dances last night. The Pirates Paso is now one of my top 5 all-time favorite dances on the show. It just makes me grin from ear to ear to watch it.
I also like how steady and calm she’s been the last few weeks. She’s been there for Riker all the way and made the journey about him, not her….cough..Val…cough.
I’ve already said many times how disappointed I am that Rumer has Val as a partner. Nuff said.
Noah was in the zone for his FS. What a lovely gift Sharna gave to him with it. As I said last night, his FS was a visual interpretation of his soul. A triumph of the human spirit.
I guess Val couldn’t get Mandy Moore to choreo a freestyle for him this season, huh?
LMFAO, so we are left with a very boring FS from Team ValenRue…sorry but Val seems like a one trick pony now. This show has evolved from traditional ballroom and therefore the Pros must adapt to it as well. Val has not seemed to master this concept.
Fine, you wanna be a violinist, then go do that. Or if you want to be a pro on DWTS and anything other than traditional ballroom is not in your deck of cards…go take a class on hip-hop, jazz or contemporary. Other pros have done this. Don’t just rely on other choreographers to do your work for you 😉
Did Noah appreciate Derek’s support anywhere online I cant find it I can only c Riker saying that it meant a lot coming from D and Val said Thank u did Noah say anything online ?
I would love to see an upset tonight…but, I think the producers will do whatever they need to make sure they award the team THEY want to win..even if it includes ignoring votes.
I would be happy with either noah or riker…but, rikers paso stole the show last night again.
Susan2, I’m so sorry about the numerology/astrology post. Dona and I ran out of time. I hope we can do it next season. Thanks for mentioning it.x
@Suzanne #61 See, I almost wonder if that’s what TPTB did in the Semi-Finals…ignored votes. And if their precious ValenRue isn’t the top vote-getter tonight, well, Rob Wade will just crown them the champs regardless. Nobody is ever the wiser, as only a select few know the actual number of votes for each team.
All over the Glamour website..is Rumer & Val, also on the GMA FB page this am…it’s SO blatantly obvious who TPTB want to win. Do votes even matter at this point? I’m thinking not.
I did think it was suspicious that I saw fans of Riker & Noah complaining of busy signals a lot, yet I saw nothing of the sort for Rumer. Perhaps I just follow different people on social media than others.
One of the top trends on Twitter is that Val and Rumer win DWTS according to a show insider…..Is voting even closed yet?!?
I’ve been saying all the while that if Rumer and Val had great routines I would not begrudge them the win, even if I’d prefer Riker to win. But wow, talk about underwhelming freestyle. Same type of dress she’s worn all season, the same leg wraps as last week, and the same tone and feel as everything else they’ve done. I didn’t have high expectations but even then this didn’t live up to it. It was a decent enough AT, but one of the lamest possibly winning freestyles ever.
And make no bones about it. As much as they praised Riker and Allison for their dances, they gave the meaty, emotional packages to Rumer and Val. It did feel like season 18 all over again. Rumer is Val’s “chance” and his “redemption”. Ugh. What a crock. Everyone seems to be talking about Rumer, so I’m going to chalk it up to her winning. But I think Riker definitely deserves it.
Sad that there was no Mark or Derek in the finals, and like many others have said their absence was felt. Plus NO WAY Val beats a Derek freestyle with that routine. Lordy.
I think for the first time in the history of the show, I’m going to spoil myself before watching the results tonight. I won’t be home anyway, and I’ll use Pure as a resource to know whether or not I should even watch it. Because if it’s Rumer and Val, I’m just going to shake my head and be done with season 20 as quickly as possible. Again, had they had a stellar night I would have been fine with the win, but they absolutely did not. You wouldn’t know that by the scores and comments and hype though. Blergh.
I was very underwhelmed with all the freestyles. Sharna & Noah’s was beautiful and I feel, the most he was capable of. The other two – I expected so much more – I hated Ryker & Alison’s music and the dancing felt rushed. Rumer and Val’s Tango – albeit well done – wasn’t a freestyle.
I think Ryker & Alison should take the mirrorball but how can we expect a fair outcome from TPTB and their Val agenda?
I may be one of the few people who DID NOT like Riker’s freestyle at all. It reminded me way too much of the superior Alfonso/ Wit freestyle. I thought there was “too much messin’ around” (had to borrow from Len’s vocabulary!) and as usual for Team Rallison it was way too hectic. My OPINION here – I also do not care for some of the comments Riker and Allison have made throughout the season regarding how great they are (and yes I know Valentin made a dumb comment last week). I feel that these two think too highly of themselves and Allison really leaves me cold. I do however adore her hubby :). I will say however that the Captain Jack routine was great and it was smart to pull out this routine again in the finals. I think they may have done enough to win…
As for Noah – his freestyle was may favorite of the night. Once again my eyes were misty. Gotta stop chopping those onions while watching him dance :). I won’t be upset if he won.
Now for Rumer. She is a gorgeous dancer and I would love to see her win. However that freestyle left a lot to be desired. Yes it was a solid performance but was it worthy to be a freestyle? I don’t know but them again we are all “programmed” to expect over-the-top freestyles on this show. I think all in all Rumer was the strongest dancer last night but I’m just not sure that the freestyle did her any favors. We’ll see….
Oh and I just wanted to say that normally I’m completely underwhelmed by repeat dances – and given how much I loved Riker’s paso the first time, I was dreading it a bit this go-around. However, I do think they friggen KILLED that number even better than before. It was a risk dancing it again, and I think it totally paid off.
I do hope he has that one vote needed to win. But I’m thinking it’s going to be tough.
I was very underwhelmed by the finals. My overall take:
Noah – I think he had the most emotionally stirring of the freestyles that while a feat, felt like we’d already seen that routine from him…repeatedly.
Riker: I like the lack of drama from these two but they just don’t grab me. While I think the FS song may be a hit with the main dancing demo, I worry the new age style (and extension ballroom dance experience if known) may be a turnoff with them.
Rumer: She is likable and probably the most appealing of the remaining three to me as a dancer but I wanted to see more diversification from and fun for her which is on Val. I’m wishing we could see her repeat this season with someone like Tristan complete with an actual Freestyle. I feel Val’s racheting intensity and intent on winning are eclipsing his capabilities as a teacher and choreographer. I’ve felt he’s merely regarded Rumer as a vehicle to a trophy v. investing in the most enjoyable journey together.
Just my rankings:
3rd: Noah and Sharna. This pairing is the one that never failed to disappoint me and I love them for that. Underscored on the first dance though by far so the judges screwed him over.
Runner-Up: Rumor and Val: Like her but him…..not so much. He did a major disservice to her with that freestyle. Sorry TPTB, you really tried to make them a thing but much like fetch it didn’t happen.
Winner: Riker and Allison. They had something that Rumor and Val didn’t last night and they were having fun too. Crazy concept right?!
Really, Beth, that is your expert opinion?? Well guess what, I think you blew your expert opinion and I think Val BLEW the freestyle. Yeah, Rumer might still win, but it will have little to do with her dancing.
wynn (71) – agreed. I very much think that Val’s intensity and intent on winning have hurt his capabilities in teaching/choreo
Fig- I’m actually looking forward to tonight, not for the results, but for the special numbers (Derek/Julianne, Derek/Amy/Noah etc)…even if Val wins, maybe they would be worth watching? dvr? 🙂
I love it when people point to judges scores to make some sort of point. As if they are actually representative of reality even most of the time. LOL. Right.
I so wish people would start typing in complete sentences and use actual words instead of numbers. Punctuation would be nice as well. All that crazy stuff. Maybe I’ll just start deleting comments that I can’t actually understand without putting a lot of work into it.
Derek posted nice things to everyone, Kelly K – that’s who he is.
Ahhh! its Over we did wat we could and its done and I hope it was enough to make the change. I do think Riker will get the freestyle encore tat was trending much better than Rumer. 3rd place I hope would love the look on his face Sorry Rumer nothing against u.
Truly speaking and I am not being biased and really trying to be fair Rumer, was good nice dance good emotions but that was just a dance not the dance that will blow ur mind.I think Val dint really understand who Rumer is there was something so artificial about the whole thing they dint grown on me the journey was all about the sexy sexy Rumer who had hard time becoming sexy coz she was bullied, to me Rumer is still a Celeb child with good dancing skills and nothing more. I don’t know who Rumer is sad, If Val win all I can say is no fun in winning like this he will know it in his heart.
Noah, I know a lot of ppl will not agree with me there is something about him I cant connect to I am not really sure why, its not that he is not a dancer he is a dancer he has done fantastic with his limitations and Sharna has done really really good but somewhere along the line I feel he started playing with the audience with his story. Hey, I am totally okay with any one who disagrees with me, Only, I feel that way. I voted for the guy in most memorable week I was moved by him but then something just changed not sure what. Coming to his freestyle beautifully done no complains on the score well deserved 100% its just him I could not connect much beacuese I was head over heals for AMY. I still hope he beats Rumer and comes 2nd
Riker, just stole the show from these 2. I was not really rooting for them but after Nastia’s elimination he was the only one who deserved it, No drama, just fun, laugh, dance, friendly competition with Derek kept saying Derek is king of dance half the time nice boy. I guess its the gene pool all Houghs and relatives were raised correct. This boy deserves 2 win today.
The show? still Semifinals was the best could not top that.It was too rushed, Not some epic great freestyles it was just plain nothing else. I hope today is better.
Highlight of the show- Watching Derek backstage that guy is just PureGold.
I only keep thinking what would it be to have Nastia and Derek’s freestyle.
Hoping Riker wins.
@EPMusic: I agree. Val needs to take a page out of Derek’s book in that he needs to quit worrying about winning and just make dances that he wants people to watch over and over again.
EP #73 – I always DVR the show, and I will watch the “celebration” routines, but I don’t want to sit there and watch the results themselves. I felt the same way with Meryl and Maks because of the manipulation and showmance, and despite that I did watch the results and it wasn’t enjoyable for me. Learned my lesson!
The funny part is, I am not just “pro-Derek” or devoted to any particular pro or celeb – I do have my favorites, sure, but I even like Maks (despite his crap choreography). But I hate overt manipulation because it really sours the experience for me. I can’t watch other “reality” programming because of all the production and scripting is so obvious and fake, that when it infringes upon the one show that I love, it bums me out.
Lemme just add that it was nice this season to see Sharna get some long overdue kudos from the show for her talents. I’d been concerned that she might have previously been perceived as a bit too femme fetale for the main female audience’s liking but I sense she reasonated and ingratiated herself with them in a way she hadn’t quite managed before, hopefully cementing a position as a perm pro.
My favorite freestyle? Noah. How amazing was that? I gave them a standing ovation in my room. It doesn’t count, but whatever. 🙂 Riker and Allison danced great, but I have to say that I was a little dissapointed. I hated the song and the whole concept reminded me too much of Alfonso and Witney. Hell, even their costumes were in white and the troupe was dressed similar to last season. Rumer and Val.. hmmmmmm… I think that Val did a great Argentine Tango. Was it a freestyle? No, it wasn’t. I liked the choreography, but god damn, it just wasn’t a freestyle. And why was he talking about stripped down concept? They had a HUGE production involved.
Who is going to win? I hope that it’s gonna be Riker, but I really think that it’s going to be Rumer (or should I say Val?).
And by the way, seeing this final really made me missed Derek and Nastia so much more. 🙁 I just know that they would slayed everyone and that they would create an incredible freestyle. And what a class act Derek is, showing his support to all of the finalist. I don’t think anyone has ever done that before, it makes me so proud! 🙂
on a totally different note I Just love Emma 🙂 while on All access she said she see’s Alfonso more than any other celebs this season luv that girl also, she said that Rumers dance was beautiful but was it a freestyle dance she was not very sure.
Overall I liked a lot of the dances, but definitely felt like the final could have packed a bit more of a punch. I’m not too keen on doing the repeat dances, although i do think that tonight’s worked better than last seasons, when all of the dances actually felt like a bit of a downgrade. Both Riker and Rumer did well to me.
For the freestyles, I appreciated that they were all stylized very differently from one another. I understand the critique of Rumer’s not feeling like a freestyle, but i love Argentine Tangos and was pleased to see a well executed piece that focused solely on them. I think Riker definitely had the toughest choreography of the evening and performed his very well. I do think that the music maybe killed the momentum in some parts where I was expecting it to pick-up more than it did. And, again, I continue to be impressed with both Noah and Sharna and was pleased to see him going for some of the side by side moves that surely have to be difficult for him.
Still, I thought the semis had more breakthrough moments than last night.
The one thing about the freestyles last night – I think that each of them “suited” the couples as far as their body of works goes, but I don’t know that it changed a lot of minds for those voting throughout the season.
If you were voting for Noah because of his power and emotional story, then you got more of that.
If you were voting for Riker because you loved his carefree style, energy, and enthusiastic style, then you got more of that.
If you were voting for Rumer because you loved their moody, intense dances that they’ve done all season, then you got more of that.
The wild card for me is the “new” viewer that only pops in and votes in the finale. If they are voting just based on dancing, then Riker all the way – but if they are voting based on hype and what they are told is incredible – and hasn’t seen that they’ve done it all season – then you might vote for Rumer. But if you turned on the tv and was wowed by Noah and moving around around like he did with that great lift and connection – then you might throw some his way.
LOL. We’ll see who was on point tonight.
A little underwhelming as a finals for the 20th season. Think the repeat dances should have added content as done in past seasons. And I think a freestyle need not be OTT priduction and use the troupe, but they should be about emotion and joy.
Noah & Sharna – the AT was a stunner the first go-around and given his strength, the mistakes are so unfortunate. Especially if the difference in scores is too much to overcome. Their freestyle truly touched my heart and soul and if freestyle wins the competition, they should win. Loved the choreography and emotion – reminded me of Derek & Kellie’s freestyle. With the perfect troupe addition. They got all my votes.
Riker & Allison – I think their pirate paso will live on in DWTS history. This time his footwork was so sharp and I love his Jack Sparrow persona. Their freestyle was well-executed (he’s so good and can really carry difficult choreography while front and center). And yet, it didn’t feel quite right to me. Wish it had morphed into a very Allison contemporary/hip-hop number. This reminded me of Witney and Alfonso’s freestyle which was more Alfonso’s style and was more entertaining. But I’m very glad Riker made it this far; he’s a very talented and charming young man.
Rumer & Val – theirs was the best repeat in that she brought emotion and ease to the technique. She looked like a pro. But the freestyle was a disappointment. Just more of the same. It’s so interesting that the minute a dance is over, Rumer is all smiles, jumping up and down. Why not portray that joy in their performance and final dance?
Very underwhelming show imo. I doubt I will watch tonight as the results seem pre ordained but I will check out this site and all the amazing comments. To the moderators, I tip my hat to you all. Your site and insight make the show so much more than a one night event. I definitely will join next season to get your insider info! I voted for Riker and hope he pulls it out. I think the fact he was able to improv the ending of his freestyle when part of the set collapsed shows how great of an entertainer he is and I really think he would be a great ambassador of the show moving forward. In the opposite way, Rumer would not be imo. I think this is really about Val and to see her cry because she didn’t want to disappoint him is ridiculous. I just wish that if they do win that they can tell us when they will stop philosophizing about their childhoods and crowing about each other on social media so I know when I can start up my ipad.
You apparently have reading comprehension issues too, Beth. I clearly said that rumer may very well win. BUT, her winning doesn’t make Val’s freestyle suck any less. She was pimped to the win.
You act like that tonight and you won’t be posting here.
#81 Tamara, and THAT”s why TPTB couldn’t have either Mark OR Derek in the finals…because they would’ve blown Val out of the water with a stellar freestyle…I think both Mark’s & Derek’s Freestyles last season were better than anything we saw last night. I watched them on YouTube, for the record. Rumer and Val played it safe…hoping that their cries of bullying and “I’ve never won in 8 seasons”, will be enough to eek out a win, deserving or not, and I say not! DWTS has evolved beyond traditional ballroom. Why is Mandy Moore choreographing EVERY single opeining number this season??? She’s from SYTYCD which is pretty much all hip-hop,jazz, contemporary…something that isn’t in Val’s wheelhouse…and likely never will be. He is a STELLAR ballroom dancer but if he wants to keep up with the likes of Derek and Mark, the boy needs to take some lessons 😉
Kelly K, Mark and Derek also have fan bases that would have been a threat to Val’s win. They both have the whole package – great, innovative choreography and a large number of supporters. This season was tailor made for Val to win by removing anyone seen as a threat. It will just depend if enough voters were not swept along by the producers and judges. The media have been implicit in this so I think it will take a miracle unfortunately.
I have been team Noah all season. Incredible journey, incredible teamwork, incredible choreo.
I know they probably will not win and that makes me so sad. sharna is an amazing pro with a good heart and solid head on her shoulders. Never done a showmance. FIERCE!! If any of the 3 remaining pros “deserve” a win it is her.
I think Val and Rumer will win. It’s obviouslywhat the producers want and from what I can see tons of people are in that camp even though I don’t get it. How can you miss that level of manipulation??
I will say though if VAL wins maybe just maybe we can have a season where a couple isn’t rammed down our throats. That will be my consolation if Val wins….. Maybe next season we can have an agenda showmance and pimpage free show (now that all of the FAM except Sharna has won).
And let me say…..AWESOME to see Paul dance with Sharna and Riker. That man can MOVE!
#89 – Kelly – I understand what you’re saying about Val because he’s definitely an old timer-type ballroom dancer from Eastern Europe but the funny thing is in their SWAY show, he’s performing all the hip hop/ urban routines (because he’s the “young” one) and Tony and Maks are performing the ballroom/ Latin dances! Go figure…
#92 Carrie–so then why couldn’t he choreo a proper Freestyle? Oh wait, someone ELSE choreographed those routine for Sway 😉
Kelly K, I agree with you 100%. It is very apparent it’s a race between Riker and Rumer, and I’m hoping that Riker pulls it out. I would rather listen to another season of Val whining about not winning than see his overblown ego front and center.
Well Riker definitely won the first round hands down for me.
Poor Noah – I hate it when couples have a wobble in the finale. Feel especially for Noah who seemed to let the general social media ‘you don’t belong there’ get to him slightly. Whatever my feelings about previous results, I always hope the couples give a good account of themselves in that final show. It wasn’t bad, and Sharna looked amazing!!, but wish he’d been able to give it his best.
That having been said, felt like Riker just stepped it up. Considering that he had the highest score on the dance when he performed it the first time round I thought perhaps that he would find it difficult to improve it, but I thought he knocked it out of the park. Of all their dances, it was the one where Allison’s frenetic style seemed most in tune with the concept and altogether he just sold it. Rumor did improve too, and it was actually one of my favourite routines that she did. However, I agreed with Courtney’s point that last year the first round dances needed extra choreography putting in and that it felt a little simple. It was however nice to see Rumor having fun and loving it out on the floor – we didn’t see enough of that smile!
Found the freestyles all a little like a takeaway – fun when eating them, but quickly digested and leaving you wanting more afterwards. Noah’s was good – a very innovative use of the other dancers and once again it showed Shana’s undoubted choreographic genius. It was just a little too similar to some of his other dances to stand out in the season – but was definitely a powerful moment on the night and the only dance that tugged on my heartstrings.
Riker’s was a freestyle of old – powerful, explosive, high impact and well danced. Still think Riker is amazing for keeping up with Allison who just goes full out the whole time – does she ever do a soft and gentle dance? Even her contemporary is angry anguish. He was good, in control and the boy can move.
Rumor’s was a great AT, but didn’t scream freestyle to me. If they were going to go for a proper dance, then wear ballroom shoes and do an AT. This just lacked the wow factor. Also think it shows Val’s problem. He looks at what Derek does to be successful and copies it, but without understanding the reasons why Derek does it. When Derek chose a stripped back freestyle for Kellie, it was not only innovative, but also it showed us something we had not seen all season – something the judges had been asking for – her inner sense of vulnerability and genuine connection to Derek, the music and dance. Whereas here, we just had more of what we had always had from Rumor – sexy (and boy is that body amazing), dark, broody and mysterious. Preceded by a package where once again we are told – poor Val – three times a finalist and never a winner.
As a fan, in a funny way, I was glad when Derek and Nastia didn’t have to endure the finale where they would be nitpicked and treated like lepers because Derek is just too good at his job and makes his celebrities shine. I thought from the beginning of the season that they wouldn’t be allowed to win so why put them through the finale treadmill (especially with an injured D). But I couldn’t understand why the show so strongly pushed to get Nastia eliminated – she is clearly amazing and would only have added class to the night. Now I get it. With their growing connection, her astonishing talent and Derek’s unique conceptual ideas, their freestyle would have been a true reflection of Nastia and undoubtedly blown these out of the water and they could have stolen the night.
Whichever pro wins tonight, I hope they go forward and take that confidence which comes from victory to become a better choreographer. Sharna deserves it for her commitment to Noah and her time served in the past. I think that Allison rose to the occasion of the finale and that is no mean feat in a pro. If she stays on the show, she needs to work on her shades in dancing, her softness and her ballroom – she can’t expect to get another Riker. If Val wins, I hope he calms down, stops trying to copy winning strategies he has seen, stops faking romances and ‘passion’ and reconnects with himself. Some of his early routines showed real potential. If he could show that rather than drama and produce contrasting dances all season he could win again, perhaps under his own steam! I think that Derek and Mark both improved once they had already won – it definitely took that pressure away. Admittedly they were very young, so perhaps they just grew up too, but I think that having that win propelled them to greater dances in future seasons.
Looking forward to tonight – for the dances from Derek and returning contestants (Nastia and Willow in particular) – rather than finding out the winner, but just hope the judges simply score the final dances fairly and leave it up to the public vote, whatever that may be.
it’s a dance competition so the better dancer who is able to wow the audience should win. I am a dancer and I see Riker as good with the moves but not polished enough, his whole body, legs and arms positioning need more refinements. Rumer dances like a pro and that’s the reason she gets invited to a lot of TV shows because she is killing it on the dance floor. A nice surprise from someone who doesn’t “need to work hard”. But she does so as her mother said, I have fallen in love with her.
@LisaW pretty much agree with everything you said. You covered it all. 🙂
@LisaW #95 – Totally agree with you. You hit in right on the nail! What you said about Allison is true too. If she comes back, she really needs to work on her ballroom and improving technique, because not all of the partners she will get will be like Riker. If she can “work her magic” with a non-dancer, I will truly be impressed. With Riker, I felt like his experience definitely contributed to why they did so well and why Allison didn’t feel the need to focus so much on refinement.
Tonights final is not Riker vs. Rumer, it’s Riker vs. Val. Just like Meryl was with Maks, Rumer is just along for the ride. I’m just hoping for a different outcome.
I just re-watched Riker’s Freestyle and I noticed how more in control both of them were in their dancing. I think Julianne’s mentoring them the week before gave Allison some insight on how to balance their energy with control/refinement.
Also, I thought it was nice to see Paul dance in Riker’s Freestyle. Even though he’s Sharna’s boyfriend, he nor Sharna gave me the impression that they have the “it’s us versus them” mentality. I wish there were other pros on the show who could display that type of support for others!
@Cindy. If Rumer wins I hope they don’t leave her standing by herself like Maks did with Meryl. Maks got hoisted up and little Meryl was just standing there after SHE being declared the winner. Thank goodness Charlie came over to her. My heart broke for her a little and thinking, ummmm who exactly is the winner here?
#Judyl thanks for confirming that mishap in Riker’s dance last night. I didn’t notice it at ALL last night but tonight during the encore I noticed he didn’t have to do the run and jump on the stage thing. Thought I was imagining things Good for Riker!
