Emma is such a kind soul. I love her! And it’s about time that she gets a real contender for that MBT.
Seeing Emma and Sasha dance live is the main reason I bought tickets to the tour. Can’t wait.
Me too — I bought tour tickets to see Emma dance. I can’t wait to see her!
Glad to see ticket sales are going so well for them also. I was worried when they announced the tour initially that there would be hardly any interest with it being so soon after the last one, but I saw they’ve sold out quite a few venues already and Mohegan Sun is nearly sold out again. They deserve it considering the amount of practice, travelling and dancing they have to do 🙂
On a side note; BAllroom with a Twist is coming to Mass in July and they just added Chris Soules as a “special guest” for the three shows they are performing. I guess there is not much work to do on the farm in the summer!!!!
Guess he just wants to keep his 15 mins of fame still going…
By going to the well so often, though (GREED), they will most certainly see a big fall in attendance if they do it in the winter time again. If not in winter then next summer. There used to be DWTS tours all the time – they stopped for a reason. They’re only back now because they saw how well Derek and Julianne did.
It’s good for the dancers – but you can be sure they aren’t making nearly the coin that Derek and Jules are. That’s going into TPTB’s pockets, I’m sure.
So true, PH! A reasonable number of general viewers will enjoy the novelty of going to see some of the DWTS pros once. However, those same folks aren’t going to turn up every 6 months.
I wonder if the DWTS tour will cause TPTB to do even more pimping of selected pros and try to manipulate results so celebs who are amenable to touring end up as winners or at least finalists.
@ Cidra…
I sure hope TPTB don’t start pimping a certain pro like a repeat of of the last 2 seasons, because that might get to be more predictable and who wants to know that they are doing this for the next pro they want to go on the DWTS tour. It seems to be more about the Pros anymore than the Celebs.
And, I agree with PHeidi about going to the well so often, the attendance would become dry. And, I also agree they saw how Derek’s and Julianne’s Move Tour has been a smashing hit with the crowds (sold out tickets), and DWTS is only back because of D & J’s success. We can’t have those two “dynamite” Hough siblings outdoing anyone. (like on S-20 w/ Derek) And, I wouldn’t doubt that D & J are pulling in a bigger coin. They bring something new and fresh every tour that they do; and we all know the genius behind it, too.
I forgot to mention that I was shocked at the photo above, as I saw it before I read anything and didn’t know it was our sweet lady, Emma. I would love to see her get a good partner with much potential for once. It’s time for her to have the experience.
Well, Derek and Julianne are making more money because it’s THEIR tour. They took the risk (and did all the planning, hiring, etc), so they get all the reward. After they pay their dancers and choreographers and the rental on the equipment/buses/etc. – the rest is theirs to split. There is no beast to feed. The DWTS tour, on the other hand, is not run by the dancers, but by the show. So all the dancers get a paycheck, but the producers probably take all the profit. For musical acts, all the tour money is in merchandise. I’d bet the DWTS dancers don’t get any of that, while Derek and Julianne probably get all of it.
Conservatively, Derek and Julianne stand to clear a couple million off their tour (I haven’t done the math, just guessing), while the DWTS dancers get a salary probably comparable to what the backing dancers for MOVE get – perhaps more, since they are “names” – but not close to what Derek and Jules are making.
The BBC have probably been making a killing from winter and now the summer tour, because their production is probably much less expensive than MOVE. Like PH said above MOVE have a massive set, lots of props, equipment, buses, backup dancers and choreographers (I bet NappyTabs cost a bomb for starters). The BBC are probably spending a lot less on all of the above other than the pro dancers + Melissa, Rumer & Alfonso. I reckon the MOVE backup dancers are very cheap. The fact that they get to work with the Houghs and NappyTabs is probably enough for all of them to do it for free. Getting paid will just be an added bonus for them.
That’s exactly why I feel a little sorry for the DWTS pro dancers. They are obviously doing a ton of work, learning (and in some cases choreographing) the routines and performing in every show when in all likelyhood they are probably only making a couple hundred bucks a show tops. Derek and Julianne on the other hand are doing just as much work but making more money. They seem happy enough though and I don’t blame them. Loads of people are turning up to watch them dance and if they weren’t on the Tour they wouldn’t be making any money.
I’m still surprised just how popular both tours have been this summer, Neither have been hit by a ticket decline and that’s a massive positive for dance in general. When both shows look like selling out an 10K arena like Mohegan Sun, that can only be a huge positive for dance. I do agree with the above though that if the same shows take place next summer, it may be a different story.
Having seen the DWTS tour twice, one in its full-flower post Season 4 I think, and then again later because my mom so desperately wanted to go, the change in attendance in like-sized venues was AMAZING. The 2nd time I saw the tour the venue was more empty than full, and the Event Staff moved everyone down to floor, or 2nd floor level seating. Then they turned the lights down on the upper level, encouraged everyone to be super loud, and dance along blah blah blah….we left at intermission.
MOVE on the other hand–not real enthusiastic about going. But by golly, I would do it again!
DWTS–never again!
M8, are you sure the Sun is being configured for full capacity?? Arenas like that have several configurations and can be laid out to seat a lot fewer.
What you have to remember about MOVE is that Derek and Julianne are the ones taking all the risks by putting on the tour. The more you risk, the more the reward should be. The DWTS pros may be making less money, but they’re sure to get paid regardless. I don’t feel THAT sorry for them.
PH I’m pretty sure it is. It’s only letting you buy upper tier seats now so I assumed it’ll be the same layout as it was when dwts went there in winter which is floor, lower and upper tier. I’m on the fence regarding arenas, they look amazing when sold out but terrible when half full. Says a lot about how much of a draw the Houghs are when they put on a tour like this and sell so many tickets. SWAY could try it and I bet they wouldn’t even fill half of Mohegan Sun.
Peta just said that Mohegan Sun has 7,500 ppl coming – that means they AREN’T using the full configuration. Don’t know what they’re doing for MOVE.
Fair play, that’s me wrong. That’s still a ridiculous amount though for a dancing show. Especially considering the show went there back in January. MOVE should do just as well considering they haven’t been for a year. Imagine how much money Derek and Julianne will coin in if they have 7.5k in for not only the evening show, but for a matinee as well.
I wasn’t trying to point out that you were wrong – just answering the question I had posed earlier about the configuration of the venue. That’s a regular thing – cutting down the larger venues to a smaller, more realistic size.
7,500 is large, but it’s smaller than some of the venues that Derek and Jules are doing. They aren’t selling those out, but they’re getting more than 8k bodies in there. That is a LOT. The other night they played a 16k seat venue and it was more than half sold – possibly well more than half – and that was an outside venue in Houston during a tropical storm. There’s no doubt they are doing well.
