Sharna Burgess Blogs about Nick Carter and DWTS Week 7
Below is an excerpt from Hollywood Life – click the link to read the whole thing. Can I say that I absolutely hate the idea of “Icon” night?? Good lord, give it a rest, producers. These themes are ridiculous. I expect Nick will get immunity since he’s doing a contemporary against Bindi’s foxtrot. Figures.
Our Argentine Tango may not have been received well by the judges tonight, however he really did step up to the plate in such a difficult week. We had to change a lot of our choreography on Sunday because the bed of roses on our stage was so big, and I only had an hour to change that on him; so everything considered, Nick performed beautifully. He was so strong, he was calm, he didn’t forget one step, and took care of me every step of the way especially in that lift which was not easy. Even though our scores weren’t what Nick wanted, and he did get critiqued for the Argentine Tango, he came back ready to give his all for our team dance, and to be the team leader that he knew he should be. He rallied everybody together, he brought everybody in and really helped deliver the performance of the night.
Going into next week, Icons week, we have an awesome song, highlighting a wonderful icon that I can’t wait to tell the story about. We have contemporary for our style of dance, which I think is going to suit him beautifully. I’m going to drill him on his lines and his posture, and put to work all of the notes that Carrie Ann gave us because I know he wants to make her proud and I know that Nick is waiting for that moment when he turns around and she says, “You did it!”
I usually like the theme nights but the ones this year have fallen flat for me. I remember not being excited about dymanic duos during season 19 but I ended up loving it. Maybe next week will surprise me too. I am very curious as to what “icons” they will use.
Ugghh, can we get one night without a theme where they can just dance?? I’m guessing they have somehow pay homage to some sort of icon through their dance? Very intrigued to see what everyone gets, especially after the packages Tamar and Alek had last night.
I realized earlier, if only one couple gets immunity, that means only one couple can get a perfect score, right? Or would they give it to more than couple? I can’t remember what’s happened in seasons past – if any mod could chime in. If only one couple is allowed immunity, song/icon assignments and dancing order could get very interesting.
Does “icons” mean famous people or does it mean things?
I think they did an Icons night (or American Icons, maybe?) in S18. When Kenny Ortega guest judged.
It was like Elvis, Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Beyonce music, etc.
Maybe it’s that, but giving themselves a wider music choice?
They can hand out as many perfect scores as they like – the couple with the highest cumulative score would then get immunity – Bindi, as it stands right now.
Ah, got it. I missed that it was cumulative – thanks! Paddles could get interesting. Isn’t it just a few points separating the top contestants?
We’re getting so close to the finals I am thinking we won’t ever be without a theme (or at least a gimmick) every week this season. I miss the good ol’ days. And Len. Here’s hoping a bunch of weird songs and dance styles aren’t shoved together again for the sake of the theme.
Well Bindi is now 6 points ahead of Nick so he would have to get a perfect score and she would have to get 24/30 for her dance which is unlikely.. so then it will most probably go to Bindi unless there is only one perfect score
As I understand it, the highest scoring couple of week 8 gets immunity. If more than one couple has the highest score, say Nick and Tamar are tied for highest score after their dance next week, whichever of them has the higher cumulative score gets the immunity. So it won’t automatically go to Bindi. If someone outscored her, they can get the boon. But if Bindi ties with anyone for top score, she should have the gift. That’s why the judges might be very interesting next week. Also, the chosen icons and who is assigned what is ripe for producer manipulation.
I doubt Bindi is in danger of being booted soon no matter what happens next week. But it will be mighty interesting to see if the producers try to favor anyone to boost or save them.
Just interesting in an aggravating way. I really ended up enjoying famous dances night but I think it took away some of the fun that I usually get over Halloween since it was too soon.
@Colleen that makes more sense, thanks for clearing that up! Agree with you about famous dance night – didn’t expect much but I loved it and last night was the other way around for me. I’m most excited for Trio week at this point.
True, colleen – but if Nick and Tamar are tied for the high score on Monday night and Bindi isn’t up there with them, then you have to start looking at motives.
Yes, exactly. 1 point from one judge could be the reason one pair gets “immunity” from being voted off if that’s the way this will work. And with a theme of icons plus of the remaining stars, only Carlos and Alek have not topped the headboard before. And given the icons theme, that’s ripe for producer manipulation, we could see them attempt to save or boost someone. If they do though, it will be very transparent and suspicious. Which hasn’t stopped them before!
Sorry, headboard was leaderboard but I didn’t notice the auto correction.
I wish it was more of iconic dances that have been performed on past seasons. Kind of like when it was done in week 3 of the All-Stars season.
I was thinking that Tamar will get immunity. After her edit and her low scores, the producers may gift her that. Lookng forward to your number crunching this week, P H!
From this past week, I doubt that the producers want Tamar to get immunity. Her package seemed to indicate that they are ok with her leaving.
They love a good leaderboard shake up, marintx – I wouldn’t count it out. The continued to score Nastia well while they hosed her but good in at least two packages and then in Dance Center.
Just thinking out loud. If it looks inevitable that Bindi and Derek will win, that’s about the worst case scenario for DWTS’s producers. She’s not a “star” that comes with a fan club willing to watch simply everything she does like Nick the Backstreet Boy. Some of the multitudes that complain about Derek always winning might actually stop watching if this season’s outcome looks too clear.
Now, we do have several other contestants though who have topped her score in 1 week or another. Nick’s team easily won with This Is Halloween. Carlos and Witney have been enjoying dramatic music and garnering high scores. Carrie Ann Inaba seems to think Tamar is the best dancer of those remaining. (As do Tamar and Val!) Even Andy has garnered good scores the last couple of weeks given elaborate themes. And what do you know, next week is about “icons!” Just saying, there are plenty of tools around to manipulate with next week. The themes, immunity, a twitter vote, one on one dance offs…..
i’m just waiting for the dance off to be between alexa and carlos…. dream situation for the producers.
really refreshing to hear Sharna take on CAI’s points and use it as a focus for Nick and him wanting to do well, think sometimes (and I know not often) CAI does make some great constructive points.
I don’t understand why Nick is so hellbent to get CAI’s approval. I think that’s part of the problem with him actually. He puts so much pressure on himself to please the judges that he never relaxes in the routine and just dances for the sheer joy of it.
If I were Sharna I’d be pounding into Nick’s head “F**k the judges! Just let go and enjoy yourself!”.
Do I want to see a Bindi/Derek win? Absolutely. So I could easily get myself all stirred up about what TPTB might do to prevent that. However, been there, done that, and I’ve decided not to go there this time. 1. It takes way too much energy; 2. it’s not going to change anything; and 3. I think it’ll be a lot harder for TPTB to screw Bindi than it was for them to screw Nastia. Not saying they can’t do it, but if they’re not careful and subtle, it could easily backfire (and we all know how good TPTB are at being subtle–not).
I’m just going to enjoy Bindi and Derek’s dances, vote, and hope TPTB don’t ruin (what used to be) my favorite show anymore than they already have. As it stands right now, when Derek finally bails, I don’t think there will be enough left to keep me watching.
Susan2, Maybe Nick and Sharna are pitching their response to CAI’s comments to show that they’re not arrogant. Although Sharna has occasionally shown displeasure at the judges’ scores/comments (usually in the heat of the moment), she’s pretty careful not to be dismissive of the judges. Hopefully on the few occasions when she can say a few words to Nick without a camera around she does tell him to mentally flip off the judges.
I would hope he(Nick) would not spend a lot of time trying to please CAI. She is very fickle. She is all over the place in her scoring. Then there is her on/off lift police policy. She is a hard nut to crack. Esp this season.
