Videos Of The Wonderful World Of Disney 60th Anniversary With DWTS Witney Carson And Derek Hough
In case you missed Dancing With The Stars Derek Hough and Witney Carson on the Wonderful World Of Disney 60th Anniversary Special on ABC, below are their dances and were they ever off the hook. Derek’s “Step In Time” number was so amazing with Dick Van Dyke. Let us know what you think and thanks to @idolxfactor1 for recording. To see more performances from the night, see Idol Xfactor. That was the best thing I have seen all week on tv. Disney should be very proud right now. My fav part (besides the big dance number) had to be fall out boy though. When I was a kid I used to be able to use the vcr at like age three (which really freaked my parents out lol) and I watched the jungle book religiously lol.
I think I’ve watched Derek and Dick Van Dyke 500 times. Best. Thing. Ever.
Wow! Derek is doing a great job as the host!! Good looking, articulate and charming!
I love all the music and dancing on this show!! Fantastic show!
Step In Time was the best performance of the night imo! I need to see Derek on Broadway. Like, soon! 😀
The show was as magical as you would expect. I’ve never seen Ne-Yo perform and was very impressed with his number. Idina Menzel, Fall Out Boy, it just kept getting better and better. Dick Van Dyke was a real highlight and Derek confirmed he has a big future ahead. Such fun!
That was awesome! Count me in as another person who’s obsessed with the Step In Time number. While we were watching it my roommate said (re: Derek) “Wow! He really does belong on Broadway!” 🙂
@PH, do you happen to know who choreographed Step In Time?
I don’t know why they didn’t put Dick Van Dyke into some kind of costume so he would (visually) fit in better. He looked like someone who’s been sprung from “the home” for a few hours.
Not sure Sonic, but I assumed that it was Travis and Derek.
@Suzy Aren’t you quite the party popper? I was right there with the live audience cheering in delight to see icon Dick Van Dyke not only introduced but looking lively and happy, as well as handsome and elegant, at the celebration!
Bravo Derek! Congratulations Disney! And GREAT to see Dick Van Dyke onstage again!
Jesus, he’s 90!! That’s a bit harsh. That he can do as much dancing as he did is amazing. Plus, he’s Dick Van Dyke – he shouldn’t have to blend in.
I thought Dick Van Dyke killed it up there and he was just perfect in every way.
yes to PH: “Plus, he’s Dick Van Dyke – he shouldn’t have to blend in.”!
Sorry to upset anyone. Dick Van Dyke was amazing, without a doubt. My comment really is to abc/Disney; I think it would have been more respectful to the man if they had made him more of the routine. It wasn’t a matter of needing to blend in. For me, he looked out of place, which took me out of what they were doing. JMO
I very much enjoyed seeing Derek act as a MC for this special. Sharing those honors with the likes of Helen Mirren and Neil Patrick Harris as well as performing speaks volumes about how Disney, the parent conglomerate sees him. Bodes very well for his future, I think.
I did wonder at a couple of things – Did Derek do any of the choreography for the special(officially)? And was Derek singing on Step In Time?
@ Colleen
Yes Derek was singing on Step in Time. As far as the choreography, nothing official on that but like PH I assume it was Derek and Travis choreographing.
I agree Heidi Dick Van Dyke kept right up with Derek and they might have slowed the pace a bit but those were the super easy steps either. Very impressive but then I am a huge Dick Van Dyke fan and Mary Poppins came out when I was in Kindergarten. Yeah I’m an old fart and proud of it.
Ooops Hit submit too fast. Should be they were NOT the super easy steps.
Yes, he was singing….and I have no idea on the choreo. I know that Travis choreographed the dance with the girl singing that came before NeYo. I saw lots of rehearsal with Derek and Travis for that dance but I would be guessing on the choreo. I’ll have to go rewatch the credits. I do suspect, however, that Derek is going to get a choregraphic credit on nearly everything he dances going forward – and maybe he has been for a while. He’s moved up out of the “just a dancer” frame. I don’t see him doing any dance without a good deal of input.
Thanks for the confirmation of Derek singing! I was pretty sure but so wrapped up in the whole performance that I didn’t pay that much attention to the vocals. And once my darling Dick Van Dyke appeared, it’s a wonder that I was aware of anything for a while!
I loved the dance for the “Ariel” number too! I wanted to see it better rather than close ups of the singer. I think Ne-Yo’s number was well done where the dancers didn’t overwhelm him but instead accented and highlighted his performance. I loved how Step In Time was a true homage to the classic film number. Not a recreation but a celebration of what had come before. (Better than “famous dances night” with butchered instructions.)
I’m sure that Derek always has creative input when he dances. But I was hopeful that he’d be billed as a choreographer as well as performer and host for this program. Great (and possibly further door opening) credit that’s well earned.
I was poking around instagram this morning and I’m actually thinking that Nick Florez and RJ Durell might have been the main choreographers on the Step In Time number. Their joint account was tagged by a few of the dancers in rehearsal pictures and they reposted Derek’s rehearsal video. That’s not to say that Derek didn’t provide input (possibly enough to get choreographic credit), but I think they could have been the ones “in charge”.
It’s weird, sonic. The publications reporting on the show give Travis credit for the Maddie Zeigler bit, but no one else is credited for any choreo on any of the other numbers. Seems like a weird omission. I thought that maybe too much of the original choreo was in there or something.
That’s really weird. You would think even if Step In Time had too much of the original choreo there would at least be someone credited with the Ne-Yo bit since that was all new.
Just saw that Disney is doing a sequel to Mary Poppins. Seems to me, not only is Derek on Disney’s radar but he just gave a hell of an audition for the part of Bert. Fingers crossed.
@california kim
I’m not so sure Bert will be in the sequel – as I understand it, it’ll take place quite a while after the events of the first movie and be centered around the kids of the now grown-up Michael Banks.
Bert the Chimney Sweep in the 1964 film was a composite of a couple of characters from the PL Travers books. And several “adventures” in the films were pure Disney, not book based. The author had a thorny relationship with the very, very successful film to begin with. And none of the 7 Mary Poppins books that she wrote were set in the proposed time frame of this sequel. So my guess is, Bert will appear in the Disney sequel. The big question is – did he age? Magic Mary didn’t. She’ll be played by 32 year old Emily Blunt. So will Bert be 50something or 30ish like Poppins? That decision will very much affect the casting, I would think.
There’s an article in Variety that they are “in talks” with Lin-Manuel Miranda to co-star with Emily Blunt to play Jack, a lamplighter resembling the character of Bert. Maybe they’ll be another role for Derek.
I’m still hoping to go to NY to see Derek on Broadway.
I loved the whole show, and Derek was awesome!!!
