Another PureDWTS Season 22 Exclusive: Doug Flutie Is Going To Give The Dance Floor A Spin
Doug Flutie is gonna be on Dancing With The Stars…which means there are an unprecedented THREE NFL stars on the same season! As many of you might know, Doug was a quarterback for the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots. Though before that, he played college ball in Boston where he became famous for his “Hail Mary” touchdown pass in a game against Miami on November 23, 1984 one of which was considered among the greatest moments in college football and American sports history. Doug received the Heisman Trophy and the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award in 1984. After retiring, Doug served as a college football analyst for ESPN and ABC. He has worked for NBC Sports and NBCSN. To read more on Doug, see Wiki. Doug is paired with Karina Smirnoff. To read more on all of our spoilers, see this post. My husband is going to be in football heaven this season. I just wish my Dad was here to enjoy it too. Though something sparkly tells me, he will be. Go for it, Doug and Karina!! Photo below is of Doug and his daughter dancing at her wedding recently.
Thanks for this, Vogue! Doug Flutie is a class act! I am excited to see him on the show! It will be interesting to see where the football votes will go!
YW Megs! You are so right…it will be interesting indeed to see where the football votes go.
Just another bit of Doug Flutie’s career, he also played 8 years in the CFL (Canadian Football League) and was a very popular player here. Even though we can’t phone vote, we can vote by FB. He’s one classy guy and one I would watch. I’m glad he’s paired with Karina.
Holy crap, I knew of course about his autistic son but I just read that a few months ago Doug’s parents died an hour apart from each other of heart attacks. Yikes. Poor guy. 🙁
I agree with all those that have mentioned the strong match between Doug and Karina. I think she’s one that can bring out the best in him and make however long his tenure lasts a positive one. Plus, YAY Karina again!!!
I’m getting a strong Kurt Warner vibe from Doug. Maybe not the most naturally-skilled dancer, but a good guy and a hard worker that’s bound to appeal to the viewers. That could actually take him pretty far.
Holy Batman this season is stacked!! Now, Doug Flutie is putting on his dancing shoes as well. I’m also excited to see the lovely Karina Smirnoff again.
WOW! This really is Dancing with the Stars: NFL edition!
@Sharon1 (#3) – My guess is a lot of casual fans won’t know that. So your task is to get the word out to the Canadian Flutie faithful that they *can* (and should) vote on FB. 🙂
Courtney, I actually had the pleasure of working with Doug on a project back in his New England days and Kurt Warner is exactly who’d I most liken him to as far as DWTS past contestants go, only perhaps a more natural mover than Kurt. I was hoping your Autism hint was him – Karina (and thus her fans) must be over the moon. His refined elegance will be an interesting contrast to the more showboat personalities of Von and Antonio. And while they are more recent superstars, Doug’s probably more far reaching and known to the DWTS voting demo. However it plays out, it’ll be fun to watch these three try to tackle each other on the dancefloor.
@Wynn, so nice to read your personal insight on Doug Flutie. I love the way you describe the contrast between his personality and Von and Antonio. It will be interesting to watch! I do hope Flutie does well. I’m sure all his “pay check” will go to his autism foundation.
Wynn, that’s so awesome. Thanks for sharing!
I have to keep coming in this post to look at that picture. I just love it so much.
Vogue, do you love it because it reminds you of you and your dad or just in general? I can just imagine how Doug is feeling in that photo. I’m sure he is so happy for his daughter!
Everything you wrote!
So sweet, Vogue! You know what they say,” A picture is worth a thousand words!”
You said it!! Thanks Meggie!x
Fig, I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s why he’s doing the show, maybe his parents used to watch it every week. Touching story! Sounds a really good guy, seems to be a lack of older contestants for the demographic to get behind, maybe Doug will be the one.
@Wynn (#9), How lovely that you got to work with Doug and can vouch for him being “the real deal”. I certainly hope he’s a more natural mover than Kurt Warner (no disrespect to that gentleman). Doug has a certain elegance which should stand him in good stead in ballroom, but I do fear there could be dad dancing when it comes to the Latin. I could see him giving us a good Jive, but Rumba??? Luckily the way things are structured on DWTS these days, he could well avoid some of the more awkward choices.
Yay!! Karina’s back! Best of luck to Doug and Karina!! 🙂
I love this pair. Always been a fan of Doug Flutie. I think he and Karina will compliment each other very nicely. When he was playing, win or lose he was always a class act.(Something some of the current players could take note of.)
