I like Ginger well enough, but the pimping is already ridiculous IMO, and it’s only week one!
All of this special coverage of Ginger is starting to leave a bad taste in my mouth.
Most every celeb has a special audience that they court through media interviews and social media, but the coverage of Ginger on DWTS is something else entirely.
This is the top rated morning news show on the same network as DWTS, using it’s very popular anchor in aired packages on “road trips” to see Ginger and showing a shit ton of special features on her time on the show. Not to mention just the normal interactions between Ginger doing her job as weather anchor with Robin, George and the gang on air when they discuss her DWTS gig.
It’s such over the top network buddies pimping that it’s really starting to get on my nerves. And I don’t want to dislike Ginger, who seems lovely, fun and energetic, but I’m finding it somewhat hard to separate the pimpage from the pimpee.
I don’t find it too surprising the network is milking this for all that it’s worth and then some, but I do find it interesting that some people (outside the hardcore DWTS fans) seem to be wise to the tricks this time. Several of the comments on the video for Ginger’s Jive on the DWTS Youtube channel have expressed disdain for the ABC pimpage, and while lots of people on Facebook (aka the closest thing I have to measuring the consensus of the show’s general audience) seemed to enjoy her performance, I did see quite a few over there say they found it odd she was scored the same as Nyle and Wanya and/or that they thought *insert female celeb here* was better. This is starting ti make me wonder how successful they’re going to be with the pimpage this time around, especially since I don’t think Ginger is as big a name as some others who have gotten this treatment in the past.
I agree with everyone. I like Ginger, but I don’t like that she gets all this extra exposure that the others don’t seem to be getting. I get that she’s ABC and all, but it’s just a little over the top. It also doesn’t help that she’s with Val (who I don’t hate, but I also don’t totally like). I wasn’t overly impressed with them on Monday and it’s making me feel like I want them off the show rather quickly.
Ginger who? Did she dance on Monday night? I barely remember her.
Let’s not forget that Val has been in a bit of hot water lately (actually an entire river of hot water), so the networks has sent out the memo has to “fix it” now.
Well, I can see everyone’s perceptive, but I guess I can see GMA doing specials about it because she is apart of their show. It would be similar to special coverage for the Real for Tamar or on Fox news for Geraldo. Hasn’t that been done as well? Or not as much? I can also see the co-hosts being excited for Ginger because they all seem really close. I don’t think ABC had to twist their arms to attend the opening to support Ginger.
You’re kinda missing the point, SB: whatever network The Real is on and FOX are NOT ABC, and at that, they don’t have the same widespread demographic reach that GMA has. Ginger’s show and DWTS are on the same network – therefore, they’ve got a vested interest in promoting her; and I don’t recall anyone saying that ABC had to “twist any arms” to get Robin & Amy to attend the show to watch Ginger – the argument I’m seeing is “did they really have to do an entire segment on it?”
I do get the point, but I think it is natural to GMA to do segments on Ginger. Maybe the real question is how appropriate is it for ABC to pick stars from their own lineup? Because it does raise questions to that star having an unfair advantage. So should ABC steer clear of their own stars?
SB, if you think ABC is gonna say “Y’know, we better not cast any of the ABC family – it would be unfair to the others!”, then I have some Indiana tidal wave insurance to sell you. Supporting their own makes more money for the network. If it don’t make dollars, it don’t make sense.
The show is never going to be 100% fair – but these long, drawn-out GMA segments, the daily updates on her, and the gushing about her on the actual show as well? Over-the-top and unnecessary, especially when it gets to the point where the average viewer (who I find to be pretty naive to the more manipulative ways of the show) goes “Wait a minute…is this really fair?”
I don’t think ABC will ever not cast their own for the reasons you state…I was just more asking the question in the viewer’s mind, what do they deem as fair verses unfair? So to what extent is promotion of ABC stars fair or unfair? Where do you draw the line and where does it cross over from being fair to unfair? I know ABC will do anything to make money…I’m not naive about that. 😉
And this, my friends, is exactly what I predicted not too long ago.
And which of you was telling me you didn’t see how her being on GMA was a huge advantage? 🙂
I can’t even get myself to watch this. The adoration in Amy’s face on the freeze frame makes me gag. I COULD NOT BELIEVE the production they got on Monday — the “surging” crowd, the huge glossy black stage — then the ridiculous, insulting comparison to Bindi? And that crappy jive merits the “drama” of the first appearance of the 8 paddle? Puh-leese. I think they are way overplaying their hand. And, sorry/not sorry, while none of this is Ginger’s doing, I hope her monster schedule catches up with her sooner rather than later.
I don’t have a problem with Ginger, but I do share the same sentiments. Ginger does seem like a fun quirky person, but I feel like Val is trying way to hard (knowingly or maybe not even) to try to be the next Derek.
CAI’s comment about Bindi really INFURIATED me because I can be impartial and try to see another’s point…but I did NOT at all get that. Yes, maybe 1 or 2 of her facial expressions were similar after watching the dance back a couple of times. But, it was totally uncalled for. She is not and will not be the next Bindi.
I would have rather seen Sam Champion be cast with Kym Johnson than to see Ginger and Val. But then again, I don’t hate Ginger. Its just the pimpage and the constant Ginger Ginger…
I won’t be sippin’ no Gin nor Juice this season. 😛
OMG my biggest pet peeve…. *Val is trying way TOO hard
sorry lol
Hmmm, if the usually oblivious casual viewers notices the pimpage, that should set off some alarms in pimp-central. That is, if the pimpers actually pay attention to the comments on FB and their YT channel.
I’m not going to get my hopes up, but it would be lovely if the average fan really did see the manipulation for what it is and rebels against it.
Why these fans are noticing now? Is the pimping more apparent because it started right away and is being laid on thick, or is it because it’s for someone who really isn’t that famous/well connected? After all, Ginger isn’t in the same league as the daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis. I could see viewers wondering why a morning show meteorologist is getting so much attention.
Is the pimping about Ginger or Val? She was originally going to be paired with Derek during season 20, right? Would the show have pimped her then?
I expect that Ginger will struggle later in the season. Even though she has resources that the average mom can only dream of, she does have a nursing infant. Once the demands increase, with multiple dances per week, it will become difficult for her.
Yep Heidi, you indeed said this would be the pimpage of the season.
I can imagine the comments if Ginger had been paired with “someone else” and getting all this coverage. Ringers come in all types. Ginger was on a dance team, so she does have some dancing experience (ssssssssh don’t tell anyone). But a daily national platform is a whole different level of ringer. The local news on ABC are also talking about her and cheering her on. This constant pimping is just too much. And don’t get me started on comparing her to Bindi. I like Ginger but she is not Bindi! I don’t like when they have the crowd on the floor because the judges can’t see their feet. But I guess it can hide things.
I remember last season watching GMA to hear about DWTS and our precious Bindi; and they hardly covered the show at all. I hope it’s just the excitement of the first show and they calm down about it now.
And enough about the coast to coast travel. I see to recall a couple last year. One going to college full time and the other doing 8-10 shows a week at Radio City. They had to find the time in their schedules to rehearse and then fly out to LA. The pro had to finish a show on Sunday night, grab a plane, do dress rehearsals and the show; and then fly back to NYC. Ginger is the only one working outside of DWTS.
One other thing, I saw a lot of moves that a missing pro always did. I guess copy from the BEST but it doesn’t make you HIM.
PH, you tweeted it Monday night. A lot of awesome music that was wasted because the one who redefined choreography wasn’t there to make it come alive. I found myself going back to season 12 and uttering the same 3 words, I miss Derek!
Cidra, I’m imagining “Pimp Central” (great name!) decked out with leopard skin sofas, plush, hot pink pillows, fuzzy dice hanging from the chandeliers, and posters of Huggy Bear on the walls.
?
I don’t think so, marintx – Derek doesn’t get the pimpage, probably because he doesn’t need it and goes the finale nearly every time even when they would rather he NOT. 🙂
I’m sure they would get plenty of coverage on GMA, no matter who she was paired with – but this is over the top.
As much as I love me some Derek and have little liking for Val, I can honestly say that it wouldn’t matter to me what pro Ginger had, the pimping we have seen so far is ridiculous! We’ve had other ABC family “members” on and yes there was an agenda, overscoring and pimping, but never this much that I can recall. She has a HUGE daily platform and it is certainly being used. I was upset on Monday that Robin and Amy were interviewed after Ginger danced; no one else got that much time and now today almost 5 minutes exclusively about her and her performance and how wonderful it was! I feel bad for the lesser known celebrities that don’t have the same advantage!
I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that stars with bigger fanbases (football players) or more charisma (Nyle an Wayna) will throw a monkey wrench in their plans!
When do the ratings for the premiere become available? It will be interesting to see how this season compares to prior seasons.
I wonder if part of the reason for Ginger’s participation this season was concern about a drop in ratings with both Derek and Julianne leaving. This gives them lots of opportunities to cross promote (even more than usual) on the ABC shows.
Also, it is interesting to see all the opportunities for Val to appear as a charming and fun partner in all these packages about Ginger. It seems like it is part of the producers efforts to give him a chance for some public redemption in light of his lawsuit.
Susan2, 😀 Sounds about right.
marintx – Seeing as I think the Ginger/Val pimpage, at least to the extent that it’s currently at, is mainly being pushed by the network and not TPTB, I think she’d be getting this much media coverage regardless of which pro she had. I don’t know if anyone here watches GMA on the regular, but from what I gather she has gotten a TON of coverage all over the network for the past couple of years for her marriage, baby, and now this. It’s kind of ridiculous. XD
PH – I imagine TPTB usually wanted Derek to get as far as possible, seeing how popular he is both within and outside the DWTS community, without winning in the end.
Julia, they actively tried to keep him down on many occasions. See Len’s comments on his and Shawn’s country Cha Cha then watch the rest of the dances from that night. There are many examples over the years. Yeah, they might want him to last a long time, but they work REALLY hard to make sure he doesn’t win – too hard. I think he gets VERY far without their help…and would have won S15 without their degrading behavior and pimping of Melissa.
I don’t know where you get the idea that the network is the one mainly pushing Ginger. DWTS wants the free promo from GMA every bit as much as the network does and DWTS has shown a VERY heavy hand in seasons past…and they’re the ones assigning the dances.
Oh my gosh, Ginger was even on Jeapordy for a clue. You can see a pic on her IG.
But hey, at least Val wasn’t there too. Then, I’d caps lock my oh my gosh ?
Oh, I do think DWTS is doing a fair bit of the pushing but I think ABC lit that spark and is doing the bulk of it (as of right now, anyway) and they are the ones who control her media coverage on their own network so that part’s on them. My guess is still that Antonio is the main priority of the DWTS producers this season (and maybe keeping Von around for awhile as well so they can make a big deal out of the whole football rivalry business for a few weeks) but yeah, I think they’re happy to give Ginger an edge as well for the extra promotion and all.
