Dancing with the Stars Season 22, Week 7 – Who’s Dancing What…and When?

As you heard on the show the other night, there are individual dances, and team dances. Why on earth they decided to do guys versus girls to medley is beyond me (click the link to see Courtney’s Team Dance Post). Are they just unable to NOT tinker with stuff?? Honestly, I recently rewatched the first team dances (Seasons 7, 8 and 9) and they were so much better than most of what we’ve been getting these days, with the exception of the one that Allison spearheaded last season. There is not much of a real challenge to it when you make it a freestyle – well, I take that back, there’s a challenge for SOME pros even when it’s a freestyle. But I would much rather go back to the days of Team Tango and Team Paso and see what they can do with their partners in a group within the confines of a ballroom style. But then, if they were doing things MY way, Val would remain fully clothed for the remainder of his time on DWTS. 😀

Also this week, for the theme “Iconic Artist”, we have a bunch of individual dances. I think this is kind of a BS theme – iconic in whose eyes? They are following the same path as last season – why do they have to redo the silly stuff? Although, you might recall one of my favorite dances of the season was Bindi’s “iconic artist” dance to Grace Kelly – that was awesome.

ETA: Thanks to Just Jared, we now have all the individual dances and their “iconic” songs – and they are pretty iconic. Question is, do they fit the dance style?

ETA: Paige is going last per her periscope (thanks Julia) – now, is this a good sign or a bad sign?? 🙂

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

PureDWTS Season 22, Week 7 – The Team Dances!!!

Well, as it was announced on the show last night, for the first time ever, they’ve opted to pit the guys vs. the gals – and to clarify, that is the male celebs and their female pros vs. the female celebs and their male pros.  Everyone is still with their partner, guys – it wasn’t all the male pros & male celebs vs. all the female pros and female celebs, as someone on Twitter was claiming.  Nice try guys…thanks for playing. 🙂

So in case you need any further clarification, here are the teams:

Team Guys: Wanya & Lindsay, Nyle & Peta, Antonio & Sharna, Von & Witney

Team Gals: Paige & Mark, Ginger & Val, Jodie & Keo, Kim & Sasha

As Antonio announced on Instagram, the guys have James Brown as their icon – and source says the teams are actually dancing to a medley of songs from their icon, so I’m guessing it’s going to be 2-3 of the artist’s big hits.  The gals have Beyonce as their icon – be prepared for a lot of hair-flipping, I think. I’m sure “Crazy In Love” will be part of the girls’ medley…as for the guys, I’m thinking “Sexmachine” will work its way in 😛

Also the dances are freestyles, so pretty much anything goes – I was told that Mark and Val were cracking up while samba rolling each other during rehearsal last night.  Boys will be boys, I guess 😛

My thoughts? I have a feeling things are going to tip slightly in the favor of Team James Brown, because I think the guys on that team are probably going to have an easier time embodying James’ style than the girls on Team Beyonce will have emulating hers.  Plus I think Lindsay, Peta, Sharna, & Witney are probably cumulatively slightly better than Mark, Val, Keo, & Sasha.  But that’s just me – and I actually wouldn’t be at all shocked if the teams tied.  Hell, this is the first time in 5 years that Derek hasn’t been part of the team dance…wonder if that means the pressure’s kinda off for the remaining pros?

DWTS Sharna Burgess Writes About Dancing With Antonio Brown This Week And More

Sharna Burgess has written a new blog at Extra. She and Antonio are sounding stronger than ever.

Now we are on the same page and stronger than ever. We have created a great friendship, but as his coach I had to knock him down a little bit so he could fight to get back up. And he could prove not just to me, but to himself and all the fans that were watching that actually he does want this. He does smile in the face of adversity and we can still win this. For us. For our fans. For Steeler Nation. We can still take this all the way to the end!

Moving forward with our newly found strength, I am so excited for what is to come. It has come at the right time because we are about to start double dances. That only requires more time and more effort. We have Team Dance this week — it is girl celebrities against guy celebrities. We have a fantastic song and I really think we could win this one for the boys. I know nobody wants to go home, but we do have double elimination so every point counts. We also have the Tango next week for Icons Week with an incredible Rolling Stones song.

Going on Week 7, Team Boomin is back. We are stronger than ever and we are about to make everyone proud!

More at Extra.

PureDWTS Season 22, Week 6 – Power Rankings

I feel as though now is a good time to remind everyone of a very important thing to heed when watching the rehearsal packages: BEWARE THE EDIT. Last night, we saw two packages that very clearly illustrated how the tone of a package can get skewed with the right editing – they made Nyle, the well-loved, down-to-earth frontrunner seem like a self-absorbed egomaniac; and they took Antonio, the lazy narcissist who has only put in an average of 10 hours of rehearsal time for the first 5 weeks of the season, appear to be a hard-working, misunderstood victim of his pro’s apathy.  That latter in particular made me wanna toss my cookies, because as we reported (and as it’s been parroted all over Twitter) – Antonio has done nothing but make excuses for his lateness/lack of rehearsal time, and then apparently spent 45 minutes ranting to the confessional camera about how Sharna has checked out of their partnership and he’s “putting her on notice”.  He failed to assume any responsibility whatsoever for their partnership failing to “boom”, cast all the blame onto her, and came across as chillingly aggressive – and yet, because of the edit he was given (and the subsequent falling into line that the judges did), he appeared to be the uber-dedicated “comeback kid” this week, and managed to skate by with nary a negative word uttered about a routine that would probably gotten torn to pieces if it had been performed by Nyle, Wanya, Paige, or even Von. On the other side of the coin, I’m fairly certain poor Nyle got baited into one of the many loaded questions production loves to ask the celebs in order to illicit some of the juicier sound bytes we hear in packages – I’m guessing it was something like “Who is your biggest competition this season? Do you think you’re sexier than anyone in the cast? Who do you see yourself beating in a wet t-shirt contest?” Given that I’ve heard nothing but praise for how Nyle was on ANTM (“the nicest guy EVER” is a phrase that gets tossed out a lot), I find it hard to believe that he’d suddenly decide to start seriously throwing shade and bragging about himself.  He was JOKING, guys – but because of the edit he was given, it was made to appear serious.  I’m guessing Tamar was also somewhat joking last season when she got baited into saying “I’m the best”, and I’m sure Nastia didn’t set out to come across as the icy bitch they painted her as during the infamous bad edit of season 20. Just something to keep in mind when things start feeling…off.

God bless Doug – I do think he really gave it his all this season, and for what it’s worth, I actually found myself really enjoying his Bollywood routine tonight.  Karina was smart to keep it simple, and Doug kept up surprisingly well.  But I do feel like he had reached a point where he wasn’t really having fun anymore, and the stress was maybe wearing on him – so I didn’t get the impression that he was all that broken up about leaving tonight. He was thankful for the experience – but he seemed ready for the ride to stop. But with Doug gone, that leaves us in an very sticky situation: there are really no more “bad” dancers left – everyone remaining ranges from decent (when he’s trying) to great.  Which means the eliminations are gonna get painful from here on out, particularly this double one we’ve got coming up next week.  Given who we saw in jeopardy last night, it’s entirely possible we could lose one of the stronger dancers – and that those just skating by may end up outlasting the better dancers, if people don’t start voting.  Hope you did! Otherwise things could get pretty heartbreaking, pretty fast…

Can someone please explain to me the strange fixation Val has with being half-naked for no real reason at least once in every show? More often than not, multiple times? Twice last night, we saw him shirtless (once when he was also in his underwear) – and for the life of me, I cannot figure out why and how that fit choreographically with the dances he was doing at the time.  I’m all ears if someone has an intelligent explanation… Read more..

Emma Slater Reviews Dancing With The Stars Week 6

Emma Slater has written a new blog at Hollywood Life. Last night, Wanya Morris and Lindsay Arnold were her favorite. Read on to see why. This take also includes her thoughts on Sharna Burgess and Antonio Brown.

Well I’m done, Wanya Morris, and Lindsay Arnold had the dance of the night for me. It was a close one as tonight’s show was sensational but I just couldn’t take my eyes off him. Another display of expert choreography by Lindsay which by now we’ve come to expect and love her for. Wanya was killer in this NSYNC ‘Bye bye bye’ performance. I love the seamless double spin at the end, he’s great at rotation as well as owning a natural groove which goes hand in hand with rhythm for the music. Lindsay and the three amazing Troupe dancers flanked Wanya so well, making sure to keep him the focal point and highlighting brilliant synchronization as a group. In fact, I didn’t see Wanya out of time at all with the others. He kept up and delivered a truly NSYNC performance the way it should be. I’m glad that has so far been scored the highest dance of the season and it’s quite fun that it didn’t score all perfect marks because it gives them both the opportunity to smash even this dance. 29 was their score.

Now I definitely appreciate the effort that Antonio Brown put in this week. I think the shock of seeing his partner perform so well with another competitor last week was a little too much for him. I think the dance was a strong effort and really stretched his ability. Love the footloose theme for him. As always, Sharna Burgess did a great job at setting his choreography. He was highlighted more in giving him Jive choreography that wasn’t too taxing and that had ample jumping opportunity as he’s quite good a getting height when he jumps. This hoedown style was probably the best jive for him as it’s casual and relaxed. In saying that though (and please don’t hate me Antonio fans) it wasn’t a 9 for me. The ability just isn’t there, the technique is missing and if you actually look at the skeleton dance that he is performing (not the smoke and mirrors around it) this particular dance doesn’t warrant a 9 for me. This is my opinion, I know others will disagree and that’s fair enough. I say this with respect, I would never critic if it wasn’t my own opinion or out of spite. I just find it hard to be blown over when I know I’m looking at cracks that have been filled with polyfilla (excuse the analogy, just want came to mind).

This week was a flaming success if you ask me, I love the Iconic Dance theme. And yes, I do like each celebrity with their original partner, I feel at ease watching them again. Next week it’s not only Iconic Artist themed week, the team dances are back! It’s the Male celebs VS the Female celebs so who will be the stronger sex? Let me know your thoughts on this one, I’m quite intrigued! Thanks for reading guys! See you lovelies next week!

Lots more at Hollywood Life.

PureDWTS Season 22 Week 6 Media, Scores, And Interviews After Dance Night

What a night again on Dancing With The Stars! I was impressed in different ways with them all. More on this later in comments in Courtney’s new Power Rankings post. For now, I have to say I was sad to see Doug Flutie eliminated. Though kudos to him and Karina Smirnoff. I loved how they did so with a bang and with a “Bollywood” dance to boot with such beautiful moves mixed in. And Doug….I’ll never forget his piercing gorgeous eyes for the way he took on the Paso Doble and other dances. He also proved age is only a number and that the football fighting spirit never ends. Doug, thank you for dancing and with all of your heart and soul.

So, before we get to the interviews and recaps, let’s review the scores again….

Wanya Morris & Lindsay Arnold (Jazz) 10-9-10 for a Total of 29
Paige VanZant & Mark Ballas (Jazz) 9-10-9 for a Total of 28
Antonio Brown & Sharna Burgess (Jive) 9-9-9 for a Total of 27
Jodie Sweetin & Keo Motsepe (Contemporary) 9-8-8 for a Total of 25
Nyle DiMarco & Peta Murgatroyd (Quickstep) 8-8-9 for a Total of 25
Kim Fields & Sasha Farber (Jive) 8-8-8 for a Total of 24
Von Miller & Witney Carson (Jazz) 8-8-8 for a Total of 24
Ginger Zee & Valentin Chmerkovskiy (Jazz) 8-8-8 for a Total of 24
Doug Flutie & Karina Smirnoff (Bollywood) 7-7-7 for a Total of 21 (eliminated)

And now onto some media. First, go to Glamour and ABC7 for their recaps and photos. Glamour is also suppose to post some interviews later. For some fun Team Boomin’ coverage from Pittburgh, see WTAE here.

You can also read some new interviews at People. I loved what Wanya told People about NSync…

With a performance like this, Dancing with the Stars won’t be saying “Bye Bye Bye” to Wanya Morris any time soon.

The Boyz II Men star performed the NSYNC hit – in front of his close friend Joey Fatone and Fatone’s bandmate Lance Bass. After a spot-on performance, Fatone burst into (mock) tears backstage, but got serious as he said he and his bandmates look up to Boyz II Men star.

“We’ve been friends a long time and I know how much they looked up to us before they started their own careers,” Morris told PEOPLE after Monday’s show. “So it’s really great to get to now pay homage to their great success as a band. It’s a full-circle moment.”

Be sure to see E Online’s interviews after the show. Note how Wanya said they went straight to team rehearsals after the show last night. Read more..
