Despite what some of Calvin Johnson’s team mates say, Detroit Lions Coach Jim Caldwell says Calvin Johnson is a “rather smooth” dancer. Here is more from the Coach and Calvin from Freep.com.
Johnson retired in March, after nine seasons as one of the NFL’s most dominant players. He holds virtually every Lions receiving record, and Jones, a “Dancing with the Stars” fan, said that there might be some carryover skills that help Johnson in his reality competition.
“Maybe the footwork,” Jones said. “Maybe being in shape, used to working out, having to be conditioned to perform a routine. So there’s definitely some things that can pan out, but it’s a very different sport.”
Lions coach Jim Caldwell said Johnson looked “smooth” the few times he saw him on the dance floor at his wedding, but he allowed that “that was a controlled environment, so maybe (his former teammates) know more than I do.”
Still, Caldwell said he expects Johnson to shine when the cameras come on.
“I think he’ll be able to hold his own,” Caldwell said. “He’s been very, very good at everything else he’s done. I think he might surprise everybody.”

Don’t miss reading an interview with Rob Wade at TV Guide. He talks of how excited he is on the new cast and the pros who were brought back. He also gives some hints on the episodes coming (I love the idea of a Cirque de Soleil tie-in spectacular). Read on….
It should also be packed with special episodes, though Wade acknowledges that there needs to be a balance between spectacle and competition. But at least one real-world event pressured DWTS to do something it’s never done before.
Dancing With the Stars’ new cast features Olympians, a rapper and a loud-mouthed politician
“There’s a lot of [presidential] debates in the first few weeks of the season, so we’ve jumped around with our schedule a bit, which has left us in Week 3 with just a one-hour show instead of a two-hour show,” he says. “So we’ve had to create possibly one of the most impactful shows we’ve ever done. There will be 12 dances in one hour, the couples are going to have to face off against each other, so we’re going to pair them into six different powers. Never has more dancing been done in one hour of television!”
Additionally, Dancing With the Stars is working on a Cirque de Soleil tie-in spectacular, bringing in the Andrés Ruis Orchestra (though that still has to be confirmed), hoping to bring back the Showstoppers episode, tying in one episode with Halloween and bringing in plenty of guest judges that will be announced later.

Just a few media tidbits to start us off. First, read E Online for some thoughts on the cast and when they meet/met their partners….
“Vanilla Ice hasn’t met his partner yet. He’s meeting [Witney Carson] Friday at his home in Florida,” a source shared with E! News. “He almost couldn’t do it, but Dancing With the Stars wasn’t an opportunity he wanted to pass up. He’s really happy and excited. He has some dancing in his background but he hasn’t really danced in years.”
In the weeks ahead, the “Ice Ice Baby” rapper will also continue his “I Love the 90’s” tour and the seventh season of The Vanilla Ice Project that films in Florida. Talk about multi-tasking.
Other contestants like Governor Rick Perry, Ryan Lochte, Amber Rose and Laurie Hernandez have been able to meet their professional partners. But that doesn’t mean they have a huge advantage.
“[Rick’s partner] Emma Slater didn’t even know she was doing the show this season until about two weeks ago so they are brand-new partners,” a source shared with E! News. The same could go for Ryan’s partner Cheryl Burke who “kept the fact that she was returning really close to the vest. She didn’t tell anyone.”
And before Carrie Ann Inaba, Julianne Hough and the rest of the judging panel can start delivering scores from the ballroom, some people are already speculating as to who could become a favorite and walk away with a mirror ball trophy.
“Val Chmerkovskiy is psyched. The gymnasts always go far and he thinks they have a really good shot at winning. Plus, Laurie is way too young for people to make romantic assumptions about them, which always drives him crazy,” an insider shared with E! News. “He hates being romantically linked to his partner. This will be more like his relationship with Zendaya. He had a great time with her.”
Gleb Savchenko and his partner Jana Kramer met for the first time yesterday and they are excited. Aren’t they a beautiful pairing? His former Strictly Come Dancer partner Anita Rani says he’ll work her “like a Russian bear” and that he will.
We’ve posted lots of updates on Derek Hough and Marilu Henner at Pure Derek Hough including their appearance on Extra yesterday, a bio, interviews, photos, and more. This interview made me laugh so hard. Watch it and see why when you get a chance.
Lastly, here’s a fun report on the cast from Today….
