DWTS Season 23 Cast Asked About San Francisco 49er Colin Kaepernick’s Decision Not To Stand For The National Anthem
This morning, Fox411 asked some of the cast of Dancing With The Stars Season 23 how they felt about San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s decision not to stand for the National Anthem prior to his team’s games. Interesting takes, but, for me, I’d stand up and say it.
Stand up put your right hand over your chest and just do it!
Sad thing is… Colin just propelled his name to the top of the DWTS rumor list for next season.
FOX as really no class, what is the point?!? Kaepernick has every right to protest against police brutality. He is being pacifist and not causing anyone hurt. Asking DWTS Celeb is really reaching for something to say. I’m sure they were hoping for a Ryan vs Colin. It’s byond classless and disgusting. Maybe they should report and ask about the real problem in USA, and from my perspective in France, Kaepernick isn’t one of them.
Being you are from France, maybe you don’t understand what the National Anthem is about. It’s not about police brutality. Not standing up for the National Anthem is a diss on our country as a whole.
lol Sandy, you are probably right.
Kaepernick is exercising his constitutional right that was bought for him by our military’s blood. He makes millions of dollars they make nothing but still serve.
The Police still protect him and his teammates and everyone else that goes to their games. He makes millions they make nothing but they still protect and serve.
Maybe Colin can do some good instead of getting free publicity for his antics, he could give some of his millions to wounded soldiers and their families or to the widows fund for the Police.
Tomorrow I will be at a football game and I will stand when the National Anthem is played with my hand over my heart while starring at our Flag and be proud to live in a Nation that is Free for me to express my gratitude. I won’t even give Colin a second thought.
Hum we do have a national anthem in France you know so I understand the value of it and I know what the Star Spangled Banner is about I studied it but today it is a symbol of the country. However, most of french people don’t consider not standing up being a diss to all the nation.
He explained that it’s because he doesn’t want to show his pride for a country which direspect and try to minimize really important issue like police brutality against minorites, there is also this problem with the sioux being again chased from their properties.
There is a moment when you have to ask yourself what’s is the most shameful and the biggest diss to our country : A guy not standing up for the anthem or attacking minorites whithin the country?
I just don’t get how a whole country can turn on someone and bully them over this, Gabby Douglas was so much bullied during the Olympics partly because of this that she was just not into the competition…
In France too we had some promblems with athlete like Joachim Noah refusing to play for the France’s basketball team or some footballers (or ssoccer player for you) not wanting to play in the national team because they didn’t feel proud to represent it and yes we speak about it a little and are a bit upset but it last 1 day, then we move on and don’t try to drag it into a dancing show.
In all I’m just happy that his action brought light to a urgent situation, he could have done another thing but if the buzz aroud it change something in the USA…
Well said, Lynn!
Thank you Vogue.
I remember visiting the Normandy Cemetery where the American Flag is flown with great pride. I remember speaking with many French citizens who were grateful to the American soldiers buried in their soil. They never got to go home because they helped win a War so the French didn’t have to speak German for generations.
I’d rather keep my views on this private, however I found it really weird to have the cast of a glittery, fun, dance reality show asked their opinion on this issue. Granted, one of the contestants is a conservative former governor, but still.
Nobody’s country is perfect because people aren’t perfect but the flag represents the country as a whole, in good times and in bad, come rain or come shine. I would never diss our flag (my country) because of a particular issue because it’s so much more than that and has more to offer and the ability to right its errors and does so much good.
I definitely believe in freedom of speech and Kaepernick’s right to express his opinion. But do it on your own time, not the NFL’s and everything and everyone that that entails and represents. That’s America’s game and it has millions of fans, other players, coaches and owners to consider. So if you want to drag all of these other people into your actions without asking them, then you also have to accept the repercussions.
I look at it like this. If I’m at work and I choose to to act out for a political point, thereby engaging my entire workplace and all its customers into my act without any regard to them, then I don’t expect to keep my job or have people buy my product or respect me. Had Kaepernick released a snapchat message about his feelings on police brutality, tweeted about it, done an interview about it, written a letter, held a rally, ON HIS OWN TIME, then I’d have no problem with his free speech. But don’t do it on my time with my family.
@Susan2 I totally agree with you on this point.
And of course we have to embrace all the sacrifice that soldiers have made and are still doing for America and the World but we have to aware of the fact that USA was also built on the back of slaves and by the genocide of a population. Just like “Le Débarquement” in France was thanks to the USA but also Canadians, Brithish and all the soldiers from Africa (who rarely get any form of reconigtion from any country).
Segregation stopped in the 60s but we have a lot of discrimation. I am shocked and even hurt that in 2016 we still have to protest against an anthem because of social problems.
An Anthem is more than the soldiers who gave their life for the country and of course they deserve all the respct in the world. It’s about a country, what it stands for so we have to make sure that everyone rally under it. I’m not trying to point fingers because with terrorism and amalgams we have the same issue about appartenance to the country in France. The issue really is there.
And he did some charity, maybe not towards the veterans but he is not only using his money for himelf he gives back to the country just like a lot of other athletes.
We are quick to judge him for standing, or here not standing, for something that is important to him, especially knowing his lifestory.
If you follow Kaepernick, you would know that he has been speaking out about police brutality and oppression in our county for years….with no attention or outcry. He peacefully exercises his right to protest….and now people on a dance show are getting asked about it.
On a personal note, my daughter will know the anthem was written by a slave owner and anti-abolitionist. She will know the story of the War of 1812. And she will get to decide if she stands for it. She will also know that 200 years later she will work twice as hard because her school is severely underfunded. She will know how to advocate for herself in a medical field that shows extreme bias towards anyone who looks like her. She will know that she gets to define her beauty and that no one is allowed to touch her hair (happens daily). And she will know the name Tamir Rice. That she will always have a charged phone and a camera ready. And she will know that every chance I get I will try to change all of that. Even if it’s posting on a dance forum that is my guilty pleasure.
I’m surprisingly impressed with the responses from the DWTS glitterati. They seem to appreciate the foundational right of free speech given by the Bill of Rights. The “controversy” reminds me of
the conflict in the 60’s between student protesters and hard hats. The latter believed the former were disrespecting the country by protesting some of its actions in the Vietnam War. My view is that any and all peaceful protest/expression, at whatever venue, speaks to the strength and greatness of this country, as those actions exercise and honor the country’s commitment to the important rights upon which it was built. The strength of that commitment was in evidence years ago when the courts ruled that Nazis could not be prevented from marching (peacefully) in Skokie. Rather than as a diss, I see Kaepernick’s action as a tribute to our aspirations as a free country.
@Suzy and @Becki I agree at 200% with your comments. It was exactly what I meant, maybe I could have express myself better. Pacifist actions over a great cause are always welcomed.
You just gave him quite a bit of thought, Lynn. I don’t care about Colin. What I care about is his right to protest which is protected by the constitution. It disturbs me that people proclaiming patriotism and love of country and “the constitution!!” Are the quickest to complain, judge and condem when someone exercises those rights outlined.
I could help you, Philomene. People focusing on Colin need a reality check, IMO.
Colin is making a point about things in this country. If you believe in this country, you should respect his right to do so.
“There is a moment when you have to ask yourself what’s the most shameful and biggest diss to our country: a guy not standing up for the anthem or attacking minorities in the country.”
Beautifully said. Eloquent. Wish I had said it.
Last I heard the NFL was standing behind him.
Can’t they leave politics or controversial questions out of the dancing show contestant’s interviews? This political climate is just so crazy right now.
I just want to be entertained by their dancing! ?
Fwiw, Colin now kneels on one knee during the anthem and stands proudly and sings during God Bless America since people were misinterpreting his actions while sitting.
Peaceful protest. If we are going to go there about politics I’m going to have to second everything PH says.
The wearing of the socks issue is actually a violation of uniform code, as was when a played was fined/benched for gold shoes that were not part of uniform and how the NFL didn’t allow 9/11 decals on helmets and the Dallas Cowboys didn’t allow for decals representing the slain police officers. The NFL stays to stay out of “stuff” as much as possible. So people are saying Colin should be in trouble for not wearing “uniform code” socks….they are 100% correct.

“However, most of french people don’t consider not standing up being a diss to all the nation. ~Philomene_D ”
Well, in America, it is and it’s been a tradition to stand up.
Also, I totally agree in his right to protest, but, imo, it wasn’t cool the way he did it being the National Anthem is about so much more. But hey, it’s his life.
Also, I know there are bad cops (like there are bad people everywhere in ALL professions), but, the good totally outweighs the bad imo.
I stand by my post because it is my right under the Constitution! Whoever disagrees so be it.
What does Colin have to do with DWTS Season 23? I don’t get it…
Vogue – let me clarify #26 above. I’m not annoyed that this story was posted in Pure. I’m just annoyed that the contestants of Season 23 were asked about Colin. What the heck does he have to do with DWTS at all? I agree with #19 above! This is what I meant to say!
Carrie, I wondered the same. Maybe they were trying to come up with something different to ask them. I don’t know, but, you’d think they’d keep it about dancing.
This is MY house, Lynn – cries of free speech have never worked here, so give it a rest. I let it ride because everyone had their say.
I have asked MANY times that politics be left OFF this site. If it keeps coming back up you’re just going to have to deal with hearing my very loud disagreement with the pseudo patriotism (I.e. Patriotism by your rules) that keeps popping up. If you don’t want lots of people very logically, rationally disagree with you, then keep your opinions to yourself. Otherwise, get used to it and remember that EVERYONE has rights, not just those you deem true patriots.
I have no idea who he is. Then again it is football and I don’t keep up with that sport or know any names unless they are really big ones.
Nevermind just looked him up and apparantly I’ve been living under a rock because he has been all over the news. Honestly, I’d imagine the contestants must have thought “oh dang it”
