Dancing with the Stars Season 23, Week 2 – Who’s Dancing What…and When?
It’s “TV Night” for Dancing With The Stars Week Two. Below is what we know so far….
ETA: Gleb and Jana have an International Tango. James and Sharna’s TV theme is “The Walking Dead”. Vanilla Ice and Witney have a Fox Trot. Be sure to read and check out the new Media and Interview post for more. Adding: Via his snapchat, Derek and Marilu have a Fox Trot.

ETA5: Lindsay and Calvin have a Foxtrot according to her instagram.

Dancing Last
I think Derek mentioned on his snapchat they are doing the foxtrot but I could be mistaken (watching the show live from Europe and then having to wake up at a normal time means no much sleeping for me on Mondays…)
Wonder if Marilu and Derek will dance to music from Taxi?
TV Nights.. i really liked it last year , i really like the cast this season 🙂 !
Hmm. Laurie getting Jive won’t show her versatility very much. Two fast latin dances in a row.
This is why theme nights straight out of the gate kinda annoy me. The old system of either latin/standard 1st. week and then vise versa 2nd. week was much more fair and logical.
If they want to start theme nights, at least wait until week 3.
In the skybox, Erin made a comment to Amber about how her “leather and dark sunglasses” aesthetic could work for the samba. Likely her next dance, since that comment doesn’t really make sense otherwise.
Derek and Marilu have foxtrot next week, per his latest snapchat, but I’m sure you guys already know that, since I saw his snapchat on PDH, thanks for posting and all your hard work,I’m happy to find you guys again for this new DWTS season!
I’m curious to find out Marilu theme for next week, maybe taxi?, and I’m so glad Marilu got the pro she (and lots of us)dream of having, you can tell she enjoys every minute of dancing with Super-protector Derek, and I can’t wait for the rest of the season with #TeamHennegy!
Duck tales? Talk about a blast from the past. I’m hoping that one of them gets Laverne and Shirley or the love boat theme to be honest.
Ducktales? That is freaking awesome. Laurie is probably the perfect celeb to do that performance.
I also have a feeling that Marilu is to kill the Foxtrot and I’m excited to see what Sharna comes up for the Walking Dead.
I am going to cross my fingers, though, that there isn’t an outrageous amount of production/troupe use. The theme weeks can get overwhelming.
When I see Duck Tales I thought it was the Disney Animated series. I was wondering who’s going to be Scrooge McDuck hehe…
Question to mods: what’s the difference between regular tango and international tango?
The dance Derek did with Alexa during Season 21 was an International Tango, as compared to Argentine Tango.
Hmmm, keeping Laurie and Val away from the slow dances, are they? I see you, producers, I see you…
@Thiana – International Tango is the one that’s always in hold with no lifts allowed…. that is usually done on DWTS to EDM music lol
The Walking Dead Theme sounds like it could work for an Argentine Tango or Paso Doble, both of which I can see James nailing so I have a feeling he’ll end up making another strong showing next week.
If only Mark were here to fully do the Duck Tales theme justice.. He’d go full on duck costume in no time and make something so memorable and so fun. Sadly I don’t see Val doing the same.
Marilu was also on a TV show in the 80’s/90’s called Evening Shade starring Burt Reynolds. So is there a theme song for that?
Now that I hear it….the Theme song with Lyrics called Back Front Porch by Bobby Goldsboro would be PERFECT for a Foxtrot!
Lotsa former DWTS Alum on the show too—Leah Remini, Alexa Vega, to name a few.
According to Cheryl’s article on people. They have quickstep next week.
Love this post so early on, thanks!
I hope Derek gets to do his Jetsons themed performance that he didn’t get to do with Bindi, but not so sure it would fit in well with Marilu.
According to Kristyn , Derek and Marilu will tap tance in their foxtrot
Damm I just assumed that Jana and Gleb would be dancing to the one tree hill theme song, but I can not see it as a tango.
I would love to see the following:
Amber & Maks- Jive to Orange Is The New Black theme
Calvin & Lindsay- Paso Doble to Time Judged All from Kamen Rider OOO
Ryan & Cheryl- Quickstep to I’ll Be There For You or Tango to Second Chance from 2 Broke Girls
Jana and Gleb- Tango to Cozy in the Rocket from Greys Anatomy
A quirky cha cha to Hawaii Five O Theme
Jazz to Sesame Street song
(I would love to see him dance to “Nobody’s Perfect”or “Sorry” for most memorable year)
This is for anyone(Greenback Boogie) from Suits- makes a sexy argentine tango)
Also, Think Maureen has tango as when Florence did that theme, she did that. But she could also have foxtrot or even a weird cha cha.
Can see James having tango or paso(too early for AT)
The way Sharna was talking on her Instagram story, I’m wondering if maybe Walking Dead ended up not clearing.
She mentioned losing most of yesterday’s rehearsal because of a circumstance we’d find out about on Monday. Could be something else, of course.
If Sharna/Hinch dont have Walking dead, i’d love to see them dance to Greenback Boogie.
Also, hope Marilu doesn’t disappoint me and let down Derek, as based off Monday, she isnt as much of a contender as I wanted but she’s still ok.
Laurie will kill the jive probably, as that is Val’s best dance and she looks like she’ll do it justice.
Well I hope Cheryl and Ryan can make a quickstep work with his ankle injury. That’s a rough style to do with ankle pain.
Looking forward to seeing Derek and Marilu tap in their routine.
Oh ok, thanks CC NY.
What is the difference between an International Tango vs the Tangos we have seen in the past?
The two tangos are International and Argentine, and both have been performed throughout the seasons. If you watch the Derek-Alexa dance from switch-up week and Derek’s Argentine Tango with Kellie Pickler you’ll see the difference. Also, CC NY was kind enough to detail the differences in #12. It really does help to read the comments that have preceded. 🙂
According to a interview that he did,Jake and Jenna have cha cha. The song is go diego go.
@Sophie, I don’t think she is letting Derek or anyone down. The first night is always hard for everyone because it’s a new experience for them dancing in front of a live audience. And on top of that, they had to go first.
It already looks like derek is pulling out all the stops because they are doing tap in their Foxtrot which is very hard to do if you’re a rookie, so I know they’re gonna do something stellar.
Lol @ Go Diego Go.
I mean I’m not surprised cause he IS Diego but it is such a random show/song 😛 I would have much preferred the Wizards of Waverly Place theme song (which would also work for a ChaCha).
Might end up beig a cute dance if done right by Jake I guess.
You have to remember that while she was dancing on Monday there was a voice in Marilu’s head that was saying:
OMG!! OMG!!! ? THIS CANNOT BE REAL!!!! ?IT’S DEREK. DANCING WITH DEREK. ?YOU’RE KIDDING. NO IT’S TRUE. ?WHAT???? ?ARE YOU SURE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE HERE?
Etc, etc. I can’t even imagine all of what was going on but I think she needed to get that out of her system. Marilu is benefitting from some of the stuff he’s done in the past months, and it’s something new for Derek which will have him pumped.
@tina tap will work with them bc Marilu has danced since she was little so obviously tap won’t be so hard since you learn tap as dancer to get timing so I’m not worried
James said they have paso for week 2 in a behind the scenes video with SI Now (video is up on their Twitter page @SInowLive)
According to Lindsay’s latest Instagram photo they have foxtrot this week
According to E online, Jana will dance the OTH theme song but i don’t think that she have the right dance style. It’s not a tango song. I’m happy though that she have that song
@Anne – It’s definitely a song more suited for a Paso Doble or even for a Rumba if they would slow it down.
Certain beats of the song DO work for the Tango so I’m sure Gleb will make something work. I like how he says he’s gonna try to please Len because on his time on Strictly the man would get crucified by Len for not enough content. Lol
Marilu “has danced since she was little” – really now?? I heard her say she hasn’t danced since before Laurie was born. Plus, she’s 64 years old.
Stop behaving as if she’s a 64 year old dancer. She’s an actress with long past experience – and she’s still 64. Tap is hard regardless of what you’ve done before. Unless your name is Derek Hough.
Anyone who thinks that Derek can be “let down” by Marilu doesn’t know Derek very well. I wager he would never say, think or feel such a thing.
Of course Laurie will kill the jive – she’s the biggest ringer since Meryl.
Steve, we should take bets on how long it takes before Laurie gets a slow dance – will they go four weeks like they did on Joanna Krupa?
And I have to ask…who’s helping Val with the Choreo now that Jenna is a pro??
Why am I not surprised that in spite of the fact that Val has an accomplished gymnast on the heels of a huge Olympic success, one who is known for exceptional floor dance routines, Derek is still being picked on for having a 64 year old partner who danced decades ago? If Val can’t pull this off, he might as well brand an “L” on his forehead.
I bet anyone who brings up a subject of “Marilu has dance experience” actually secretly admitting deep down in their heart that Derek is a force and is THE BEST pro on DWTS. Why would anyone feel threaten by a 64 year old Marilu who is against a 16 year old gymnast, fresh out of the Olympics Laurie? Because they know Derek is the best pro who “redefine choreography for this generation”. So to complainers: I’m touched by your admission. Thank you! 🙂
TBH while this theme seems exciting on the surface, I kind of just wish they scrapped it and didn’t have a theme next week.
I wonder if they’ll bring Latin Night back??
Also, any word on a grand opening number for TV night? I do enjoy the pro numbers when executed well.
@Thiana & Katy:
Argentine tango became English tango then became International tango:
Originates from 19th century Latin American streets and bordellos, was adopted and standardized by the English in early 20th century, then the English standards were accepted and built upon by the rest of the world.
Partners usually have body contact that is eye to eye, cheek to cheek, chest to chest. Butts and hips are pulled in tight, but don’t quite touch – they just hint at it. The rhythm is often staccato. Footwork is quicksteps juxtaposed with tortuously slow steps. There is exaggerated push-pull tension in the movements and emotions. (@CC NY & Suzy) Outside of the DWTS ballroom lifts are not only allowed, but encouraged, like the famous fan lift. The only hard and fast rule I know of in Argentine>English>International tango is never break hand-hold.
Nicole Scherzinger and Derek’s Argentine tango in season 10, week 9 is a classic example.
American, or American Smooth, tango:
Cleaned-up and corporate version of English tango after it hit the US. Arthur Murray specifically developed American tango for his chain of dance schools.
Partners generally hold each other with a square upper frame, necks back, and at half or 3/4 arm’s length. Faces and chests don’t touch much or at all, but the hips and thighs make occasional contact. American tango breaks hold so partners can do jazzy underarm turns or dance side by side. Very Broadway-esque. Like the kind of tango for brothers and sisters to dance together at a wedding reception.
Aww, it’s so good to have Miss Heidi back. WELCOME BACK!!! xxx
Thiana re Derek: “So to complainers: I’m touched by your admission. Thank you!”
THIS! 🙂
Vogue: “Aww, it’s so good to have Miss Heidi back. WELCOME BACK!!! xxx”
…and THIS!
This “previous dance experience” BS is simply ridiculous. Marilu looks fantastic but the facts are she is 64 years old. And no matter how someone tries to spin it…. She is 64 years old.
If she had gray hair and walked with a slight unsteady wobble and maybe even a slight arched spine from osteoporsis… People would still say, Marilu is a dancer. It’s nonsense.
Like PH says, Val has the biggest ringer since Meryl with the added bonus of no competition with similar agility, muscle strength, etc. So in effect she is the biggest ringer ever imo! Marilu’s former dance experience is nothing compared to this. She might be graceful but she has nothing near the flexibility or endurance. Plus I would think that Val will be employing outside choreographers for his routines. No crime but he will never admit it.
Marilu is 64, yes she’s in great shape for her age but she hasn’t danced at all for abot 20 years meaning she was in her early 40ies then. She’s done Jazz/musical theater/dance aerobics in her youth. Laurie, the Gold medal Olympian, won’t be able to do any of the Gymnastics she can do now when she’s 64.
Yeah…people who think that at age 64, Marilu is a bigger ringer than the 16 yr old gymnast fresh off Olympic competition, is seriously deluded. They only say this because she’s with Derek.
No worries Val fans! Jenna and her partner will likely be the ones sent home on Tuesday so she’ll be available to choreo for him and Laurie 😉
PH – “And I have to ask…who’s helping Val with the Choreo now that Jenna is a pro??”
I have to ask, what can be confirmed that Jenna actually ever choreographed, by herself? The only ones I know of were the atrocious Bootylicious dance with Rumer and the kindergarten contemporary with Ginger. I think there was a lot of insinuation by Val and her fans to make Jenna appear as if she’s more than she is. Padding her résumé, so to speak, to help her career & become a pro. I think Val used her frequently to show steps to his partners so they could see how a female dancer should look performing them instead of a man. Val isn’t known for his choreo anyway but the 2 Jenna definitely did were not even above average. Given Jenna’s track record, if there’s ever a good or better dance, I’ll believe it when she says she alone did it.
Ever since I found out that some of the pros use outside choreographers (which is fine just say so), unless I know for sure it’s a pro who does their own choreography like Derek, Mark and Karina, I never assume the others do their own until someone asks them directly and they say yay, nay or both. Alan Salazar being the perfect surprise to me. Before that, I thought Witney had done all of that with Alfonso. She may have done most but ever since that season, her choreo took a dip, imo, so who knows.
”Laurie is the biggest ringer since Meryl”?! Let me remind, there was NASTIA LIUKIN in Season 20 as well who was paired up with Derek, remember? & she’s as big of a ringer as Meryl or Laurie.
Some folks have got selective memory, they just want to remember & tell what they want to remember. Sigh!
Sure, Nastia was a ringer, Joanna – but she and Derek were also handicapped by doing the show from NYC. And she had to work with another pro during camera blocking. It all evened itself out. But besides all that, VAL is the only pro who has consistently had ringers every season but 2 – and that’s if I’m being generous. Also, in season 20 she was up against Rumer (ringer) and Riker (a guy with actual ballroom training) AND they did what they could to make sure that Rumer won and Nastia looked bad. Val always gets special treatment – pimped to high heaven and that will surely be the case again this season. He can’t win without the combination of massive ringer and producer help. THAT is the point here, sweetheart.
Now YOU REMEMBER THAT! Or is your memory also selective? Because that’s what we’ve been talking about here. Have you perhaps forgotten that Derek has had MANY non-dancing partners and that he actually won with a few of them? Or are you one of those who selectively only recalls Nicole??
Thanks guys. 🙂
Estelle, your comment won’t be seeing the light of day, just FYI. If you can’t post here without telling us how to post and how to think, none of your posts will show up here. Joanna’s post was a near thing – and I wanted to use her to make a point.
Just FYI – I’m in no mood to be told what to do on my own site. And I’m not giving out any more warnings. I’ll just delete you. If I have to delete you too often, I will put you on moderation. As Derek said re: DWTS…this is MY house. Don’t come into my house and bitch at me (well, Derek didn’t say that last part, that was all me. Ha!).
@ Joanna
Even if you don’t count Rumer, with her musical theater and aerial acrobatics experience, in S20 Nastia was still up against Riker who was trained professionally in Ballroom/Latin from an early age until age 15 then went on to do other professional dancing including for Glee and Glee live.
And even Meryl was up against Charlie. Nicole was up against Evan Lysacek. Shawn was up against Melissa the NFL pro cheerleader.
This season Laurie is simply standing there in a league of her own without anyone who could ever reach her quality of movement.
Nastya competed years after her olympics turn, Meryl and Laurie right after, big difference. Audience still remembers Rio.
I do agree Derek seems like the best pro on DWTS (because of his 6 wins and his 40+ perfect scores).
1) His partners almost always had really good odds of winning (top 3 of almost every season, some exceptions include Amy and Bindi). So Val isn’t the one always getting ringers.
2) He is not always creative. Watch Amy’s and Bindi’s Cha Cha Cha/Argentine Tango Fusions. Some parts were almost identical. Van’s two Paso Doble/Foxtrot Fusions with Janel and Rumer don’t look like each other. And people say Val is repetitive. Again Val is really being overcriticised.
Max, when you post here for the first time, your comment automatically goes to moderation (first 3 comments, actually – to weed out trolls). That is how the site works. You owe all of us an apology for your second, very nasty comment – which will lead to permanent moderation if you’re not careful.
As to your original comment – there is no question that Derek is the best pro on DWTS. There are many metrics that prove this to anyone with a working brain. Statistics, Emmys, mirrorballs, followers, accolades, other awards. Would you like a full list? Too bad, look it up.
No, his partners have NOT always had good odds of winning – most of them HAVEN’T as a matter of fact. Especially unlikely to win?? Bindi, Brooke and Kellie – all three with zero training. Kellie was up against one of the biggest ringers of all time. Bindi was up against Nick Carter who had a huge fanbase and dance experience. Brooke Burke was up against another boy bander in Lance Bass and a good football player in Warren Sapp. Actually, Nicole was up against Evan Lysacek – massive ringer fresh off the Olympics. No one predicted Nicole would pull it out – but then hindsight is 20/20 ain’t it. Amber Riley was up against Corbin – ringer. But I would say that both Amber and Jennifer were favorites from the beginning. So that’s two out of six – so you’re not completely wrong, just mostly. 😀 It has been proved MULTIPLE times that Derek has had many, MANY non-dancers. Only children and simpletons point at an excellent record and claim they were handed ringers every time. Congratulations. I suppose that Tom Brady cheats every single season and that’s why he’s so good? Right. How about Michael Phelps? They give him a shorter pool? How about Laurie from this season – she’s very accomplished. How was she given advantages? You admit that Val has been given ringers by saying “val isn’t the only one getting ringers” – so how come Val hasn’t won more often?
OF COURSE, Derek occasionally borrows from himself – there are only so many steps one can put in a cha cha. There are rules to these dances, required steps. Again, children and simpletons. Now, go away and come back with some original, well thought out material or don’t come back at all. Wow, so two of Val’s dances don’t look alike. What an amazing accomplishment. /sarcasm.
You don’t like how we criticize Val? Leave.
oh boy the comment section in here are heating up, I’m go grab me some big bucket of pop corn.
on another note I’m really looking for James Paso doble and Janna’s Tango, not sure how to feel about the rest.
True, Irina. There is a difference in timing that is critical from fanbase support.
These “Derek has a ringer” assertions have become meme-worthy…
….You know that Derek has a ringer when he is coupled with a corpse and that corpse belonged to a lady who knew Juliet Prowse….
…you know Derek has a ringer when paired with a broom that swept the ballroom floor…
Or, you know, just a woman who is breathing….
Do you think Laurie won’t excel at the slower dances? If not, I don’t see the wisdom in postponing them until the worse dancers are gone.
Forgive me for not knowing about the 3 comments thing. And I do apologize about the second comment. believe me I did my research (looked at all the odds of seasons both Val and Derek participated in) And I’ve been watching the show since season 16. I’m sorry again. Don’t want any other problems. And I did say I loved your website and I’ll still visit it daily
@Sophie I saw your comment about the dances you wanted to see and if I was drinking anything I would have spat it. So glad to know I’m not the only one who wants to see a Kamen Rider-themed dance, or a Tokusatsu-themed dance in general.
If you’re talking about actual bookmaker odds, Max, those are total BS – they have been since season 1. They are indicative of nothing.
I’ve been watching the show far longer than you have (as have most of us here) – you’re just wrong on this point.
….You know that Derek has been given a tango ringer when the four-footed cow he has been coupled with was born in Argentina…
#60, 61, 66 – Keep them coming! I love these! How to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear!
@Princess Heidi “not unless your Derek Hough” my ass. Derek Hough no doubt a great dancer but not the best ever. If you don’t know other people tap look at sytycd or maddie Ziegler I’m not judging her a 64 years old I’m judging her as a dancer and from what I’ve seen I think she can pull off tap
Derek will be dancing with a broom and people will say “that broom was on Broadway! They use it to clean the stage. Ringer!!”
Nastia was nit picked to death by the judges while Rumer dance background never came up. This is what happen with Val fans. They try to justify and refuse to acknowledge that Val NEVER gets someone like Amy Purdy, Amber Riley or Marilu. I wonder how Val fans feel if the judges start nitpick Laurie like they did to Nastia. All the other contestants this season are handicapped compare to Laurie.
Love the dance and pairings except for the go Diego go one. That song (which I had to look up) was like the ultimate annoying ear worm lol.
OK, Meggie.. for you.. (credit for this one belongs to DMD on another message board)
….You know that Derek has a waltz ringer when the LAMPPOST he is paired with was forged in Vienna….
Thanks, Psychee22 and Thiana! You know I think Derek would love these! He’s got to know that he’s always accused of having a ringer! These would lighten things up, I bet! The lamppost one is killing me! 🙂
@ #50: Nastia was not as big of a ringer as Laurie is. It’s been years since Nastia won her gold medal and Laurie is literally just fresh off the Olympics and therefore she is super popular ( what I’m trying to say is she was already super popular before DWTS started) and Nastia wasn’t popular at all when she was on DWTS if you ask me (nothing against Nastia, I like her very much, but I don’t think she was loved by the general audience)
And so true that there’s no other celeb this season who could reach Laurie’s quality of movement and I wonder why they haven’t casted another ringer?! I think in previous seasons ‘ringers’ were always up against other ‘ringers’, why not this season??
Ok, this post is a bit repetitive as these things were already pointed out in comments above, but I’m so glad that I’m in agreement with many of you!
Er, where did I say that Derek was the “best ever” sweetheart? Oh, that’s right…I didn’t. Stop putting words in my mouth or you’re out of here. I’m clearly talking about someone who didn’t have a lot of experience in tap who picked it up quickly. :::rolls eyes::: Reading comprehension is gud. I also never said she couldn’t pull it off – I said it would be “hard”.
Maddie Ziegler is sooooo over rated. And if you don’t tie the fact that Marilu’s 64 with her dance ability/stamina, then you are a child who’s in for a rude awakening in about 50 years. Now untwist the panties and move along.
Does Laurie have general dance experience?
…You know Derek has a ringer when his partner has visited any Latin country ONCE (not even learning how to dance merely visiting) lmao…
I think Val’s fans know Val has a ringer, they just won’t admit it. And if Derek had been paired with 94 year old Betty White, they would say Derek had a ringer because Betty, in her role as Rose Nyland, performed a tap dance with Rue McClanahan in her role as Blanch on the Golden Girls 25 plus years ago. Their hatred for Derek runs so deep, they just sound ridiculous and childish. At least Derek doesn’t post instagram pics of a young female child with Down’s Syndrome and then publicly shame her for being overweight like Val did.
I’m busting a gut reading the ‘ringer’ posts & had to try my hand at one:
You know Derek has a ringer when the chair he’s dancing with was once sat in by Leslie Caron.
Darlene – I had forgotten about that. Wasn’t Val being sued?
Not to be a debbie downer, but for some reason I’m not excited for any of these performances. Walking dead…kind of. GOT reminds me of Corbin and Karina and Bewitched has been used how many times??
Wish they used Fresh Prince’s theme song for Vanilla Ice and Witney.
…You know that Derek has a ringer when the hippopotamus he is paired with had a distant relative who modeled for Fantasia…
Psychee22, you’re killing me…especially the one about Derek dancing with the corpse of a woman who knew Juliet Prowse?
I’m trying to overlook the fact that Laurie is with Val because she really impressed me at the Olympics but I’m having a difficult time. I don’t really think Laurie has a lock on the Mirror Ball yet. Some of the guys show a lot of potential and Marilu does too.
#Nancy, your chair one wasn’t too shabby either… 🙂
But it does lead to a whole other bogus complaint category entitled “Derek cheats by using furniture props”. Remember that one? “Derek Hough and Dancing with the Furniture-gate”.
🙂
(kudos to #PH, #Nick and #Thianna, too. Thanks for playing with me.)
Ooh will be looking forward to see some of these dances. Terra dancing primarily in hold with Sasha will be interesting, but I guess since Quickstep (and Tango) are the only Ballroom dances left where they still have to (somewhat) be dancing primarily in hold, maybe they’re getting those ones out of the way as soon as possible. Not that I’m confident Terra will go very far, but I can see that as a strategy. They may do the Tango in near future as well or maybe not doing that at all.
Am I the only one not getting remotely excited over Jana and Gleb? She’s a good dancer and seems sweet enough but not even her VW can make me pay more attention to her. And I’ve seen people that complained about Amber being way too sexy and whatnot but also drool for Jana’s VW. Hopefully they’ll tone down the sexy angle, but I can see they’ll do a Spicy Gleb Tango.
Oh, an Allison Argentine Tango? Absolutely preparing to see Kenny still as a lamppost while she climbs, jumps and humps all over him.
I somehow wish Marilu would just win everything now, with Laurie getting second. Nothing against Laurie, but I’m looking forward to see the entire fam and their fans losing their shit. I would be SO here for the salt.
Daniel, that is my dream too. Have Marilu win and Laurie come in second. and the CBros faces will be so pissed!! Let’s vote to make this happen!!
Daniel .. that lamppost Kenny was imitating … was it forged in Argentina … because that could make Kenny a ringer?!?
Apologies to Psychee22! 😉
Re: Jana and Gleb – I’m excited to see more from them that’s for sure, but I hope that every dance doesn’t look the same – over the top sexy!
Even though I would have preferred theme weeks to at least wait until week three, I have to say I’m pleasantly surprised by the song choices for TV night.
Looking forward to Calvin&Lindsay’s foxtrot to Family Matters theme, especially if he dresses as Urkel. Also as a huge X-Files nerd, I’m interested to see what Allison can do with an AT to such a creepy and iconic theme song.
I hope Amber is dressed as Khaleesi for their Game Of Thrones dance.
I am happy to see neither jazz nor contemporary on the list of dances for Week 2. I started to watch DWTS for the traditional ballroom and latin dances, so it is nice to see the early weeks limited to those dances.
I’m hoping we see some of Marilu’s Taxi castmates in the audience on Monday. I am really looking forward to seeing Marilu and Derek dance to the Taxi theme.
I am also looking forward to seeing Calvin and Lindsay and James and Sharna. I did not know anything about either man before seeing them dance. They both reminded me of Kyle Massey — someone that I knew nothing about before I saw him dance and was really impressed with after week 1.
I will preface this next comment by saying that I have probably watched too many episodes of Unreal. Now when I hear that there was a problem with song clearance, now makes me wonder about the recurring issue of clearance and the decisions made with regard to notifying the pros that a song did not get cleared. It seems like this is always done at the last minute, which makes me wonder about the poor planning on someone’s part (or is it deliberate)? I have not paid close attention in the past to the timing or the celebrities affected by the clearance problems. Now, I wonder.
I believe I read that, yes, Laurie does have general dance experience from when she was “younger” – since she’s only 16 now, it certainly counts. I think most gymnasts and skaters have all the elements working for them.
And really, after Shawn, Nastia and Aly being called ringers due to talent and fanbase, are you REALLY going to try for the “Laurie ain’t a ringer because of x, y, z”?? Take my advice – don’t.
Good one, Nancy. 🙂 You too, Nick.
:::snort::: LOL – hippopotamus?
They’re just mad that Derek’s furniture got an Emmy nomination. Complaining he danced with a table with the girl with no feet. Pathetic.
@Sandy: Yes, Val was being sued, and all the fam came to Val’s defense and made snarky comments about the family for suing him. I was real disappointed in Sharna for defending Val. I wish she would just step away from the C-Bros because they do her no favors. She won’t though, because of her being BFF with Peta. I have not heard anything since that time. I think they settled it quietly and Val had to pay them some compensation. He is such an insensitive idiot.
Val didn’t mean it , the photo was in the internet a long time ago !! Val didn’t mean to hurt anyone’s feelings and everyone knows that , there is no need to bring this subject again !!
@Haneen
Just because Val didn’t know that the child had MS that doesn’t chenge the fact that he used the picture of a child whose background he didn’t know to make a negative point about obesity. He should have known better. Make your point without using a picture of a stranger.
Posting the picture of ANY child without their parent/guardians permission on your social media is wrong, made even worse by posting derogatory remarks about said child. And yes, in a way it was bullying because he’s using this child’s image to comment on and deride that child’s appearance.
I doubt it’s settle yet – I think those things take a really long time. And I have a hard time believing the Media would miss an opportunity to talk about it. It would be public record, after all.
First off, Haneen – don’t tell other people what to not bring up again.
Secondly – if Val didn’t mean it, he wouldn’t have doubled down when asked about it, he would have politely apologized. Instead of doing that he made it even worse when asked by the family to remove the photo.
If Derek and Marilu are going to tap in their Foxtrot, are the judges (Len) going to slam them for not following rules? Does anyone know if the judges are “loosening up” and allowing more creativity this season? The inconsistency in applying the “rules” from dance to dance just drives me nuts.
Forgot to say thanks to everyone with the ringer comments. Loved the humor!!
@JOanne
I don’t think it’s against the rules to tap in a foxtrot. The Foxtrot seems more open to doing things out of hold than a Quickstep or Tango so they should be ok. As long as Derek doesn’t have any lifts and has enough content (enough “in hold” to make him happy”) then Len shouldn’t care about the tapping. I think it’ll come down to whether Len is gonna be in a good mood on Monday night or not lol
Isn’t the Foxtrot the one dance style that Len is the most rigid about?
#Joanne B. Since mixing tap with foxtrot is classic Fred Astaire / Ginger Rogers, I would be VERY surprised if Len had a problem with it.
#katrinka suess. I think Len might be much harder on Derek for his sambas. But does it matter when the audience gets something fresh and is well entertained?
I don’t remember any rule prohibiting tap in a Foxtrot. All dances don’t have the same rules, Joanne.
The inconsistency isn’t in the dances, it’s in the judges. Derek gets judged far more harshly (as does Mark and a few others) than some of the pros who are in more need of “help” – I don’t know if the judges do it consciously, or if it’s an unconscious way to “level the playing field” between the VERY talented choreographers and those who aren’t so blessed.
I also don’t think that any of them want to be accused of favoritism, which is why (along with producer driven needs) they tend to not gush over Derek but over the more mediocre dances. Except for Bruno – he lets it all hang out.
That would be quickstep, Katrinka. And Samba. And any dance he’s doing when the agenda says that someone else has to win. 🙂 But mostly quickstep and Samba.
Tap is such a special treat and rarely done on the show. Kind of hate to use it this early.
Hey I must be a ringer too! I learned some tap steps for a school play in 7th grade. Step.. Shuffle shuffle step step…… 🙂
Gotta love the DH Double Standard! (insert eye rolling smilie here)
I think Derek will make that Foxtrot work. Any time he’s ever said a song didn’t inspire him, he ends up KNOCKING It out of the park!
Now I hope for the team dance this season…if they stick with doing it during Halloween week and Halloween IS on a Monday this year, that Derek’s team gets a better song than last year. That Ghostbusters song was just a bad choice…guess TPTB felt they had to knock Derek and Bindi down a few pages because I’m SURE even then they were running away with the votes!!
Oh…I was on my high school marching bands Flag Line and we did do some dancing then…so yeah, I guess I’d be a ringer too….even though it was 30 YEARS ago when I first started….yep, I’m Derek’s partner so yep, my high school color guard experience makes me a ringer :/
Just wait for the complaints that Derek is doing this SOLELY to show up the “tap elements” Val put in his freestyle last season. Or maybe they’ll finesse that whole mess and claim that Derek is copying him.
Personally, I think it’s going to be fantastic. Fox trot usually gives Derek enough freedom to create something fun. Marilu said in one interview that the cage (or a representation thereof) that Louie (Danny De Vito) worked in on Taxi will be part of their set. Way in the back of my mind I think of how cool it would be for De Vito to actually show up (without Hennergy knowing) in the cage at the end of their dance and somehow “greet” Nardo (Marilu’s character’s last name, what he always called her).
Thanks Princess Heidi! I knew Len was overly picky with one of the ballroom dances but couldn’t remember which one. Thanks for all that you and the other mods do. I just love this site and all the information and explanations that you share with us!
Derek said that he worked with the band to adapt the music so it would work better for a Foxtrot.
LOL – Val didn’t actually have “tap elements” in his freestyle last season because Val don’t know jack about tap. He did a poor man’s imitation of what he thought tap was. As I recall, it was laughable. I don’t think even his most idiotic fans would actually believe that Derek would ever copy Val. Deep down, even they know that’s crazy. If they say it, they’re just trolling.
In an interview last night Derek was talking about how hard a time he had with the music for this dance – couldn’t think how to dance to it. Normally when he starts talking like that, he pulls out something AMAZING. Hope he does this time as well.
@PHeidi (113)
Didn’t Derek Tap Dance on Broadway in NYC? LOL, for anyone to say Derek copies off Val is ::::cough, cough:::: and ::::rolleyes:::: worthy! 🙂
Yes, KK….and in a movie….and soon in Singin’ in the Rain. 🙂
Yes, I forgot about the movie, he certainly tapped in the movie. Wasn’t it “Make Your Move?” He was OUTSTANDING!!!
I don’t know PH, the fam say some crazy things. Remember Serge saying Derek copied Meryl and Maks’ tango for Nastia?
I try very hard to put aside my dislike for the C bros, then I see the people they associate with. That JT guy from DWM was tweeting stupid comments about everyone last Monday, as he does every season. I find it laughable when people say Hough-fam rivalry is just fan made. People from DWM are always trying to diss others, especially anyone connected to Derek, Jules, or Mark.
I wish someone would do Doctor Who’s theme, it could be an amazing paso.
It almost seems like the producers often deliberately give Derek music that is difficult to choreo to. And if it’s true that he often choreo’s something brilliant when challenged , I wonder if the producers are trying to challenge Derek or trying to trip him up?
@Heart
They got the “Taxi” theme because of Marilu though, just like Maureen got “The Brady Bunch” and Jana “One Tree Hill”.
Derek copying Val ??? I’m PMSL LOL Val tapping ??? still PMSL I’m with PH on this one i’m not sure Val even know something about tapping… professional tapping…
Ananya
Derek didn’t copied any Tango…
it was Val copying some of Maks’s Tango moves from the Tango with Meryl trying to adapt them to his Paso with Janel on season 19’s semi finals… you are more than welcome to watch on YT and see it… it was lame… yes one was a tango the other one was a Paso and still you can see the similarities… if you can see the full package of Val and Janel’s rehearsal for the Paso you can see who helped them … you don’t need to guess, it was Maks LOL funny thing is you don’t even need to see both dances till the end to see the similarities, they were so boring and with ZERO creativity they actually did the same opening to both of the dances… SAME OPENING…LOL
For week 2…
I saw the songs and dances and it’s going to be very interesting to see the pros trying to chore’ this week… some of the songs are not really going “hand in hand” with the dance style TPTB gave the couples.
I divided them to 2… as I see it for now
Easy work (in theory):
*Jana and Gleb, Tango to the Theme song from “One Tree Hill”, piece of cake… Dyeing to see this dance and love the song
*Laurie and Val, Jive to the Theme song from “Duck Tales”, easy ? yes, can he make it amazing… i don’t know about that
*Marilu and Derek, Foxtrot to the Theme song From “Taxi”, yes i know this song is NOT a Foxtrot song but it’s on my easy work list only cause it’s Derek and i believe he can do it better than anyone.
*James and Sharna, Paso Doble to the Theme song from “The Walking Dead”, easy one… This song is Paso song for sure tho you can do an amazing AT also.
*Calvin and Lindsay, Foxtrot to the Theme song from “Family Matters”, if Lindsay came up with great chore’ this one is gold, great song.
*Ryan and Cheryl, Quickstep to the Theme song from “The Muppet Show”… It’s a great QS song… its Cheryl… i really wanna see this one…
*Jake and Jenna, Cha Cha Cha to the Theme song from “Go Diego Go”… They were on the bottom of my ranking list and they can go home this week but this is good Cha Cha song, easy to work with for sure and Jake is latino so maybe Jenna can pull something to save him since it’s only week 2…
*Terra and Sasha, Quickstep to the Theme song from “Bewitched”… Great song, Sasha is very clever and Terra seems like a hard worker so i think it will be fun to watch them this week
Hard work:
*Maureen and Artem, Quickstep to the Theme song from “Brady Bunch”… Artem needs to work hard to pull this one…
*Babyface and Allison, Argentine Tango to the Theme from “The X-Files”… Yes it’s a great song to work with for AT but… BF is the one leading… i don’t see it happens with the AT and on week 2… Maybe on week 5-6
*Amber and Maks, Viennese Waltz to the Theme from “Game of Thrones”… OMG why wasting such an amazing song on Maks ??? With this one you can make such an amazing classic VW with a twist… Maks is the last one to know how to make it great… it will be boring…
*Vanilla Ice and Witney, Foxtrot to the Theme song from “Married with Children”… Yes classic FT but… for some reason i can’t see V.ice doing it… i love Wit but i can’t see it… maybe im wrong
*Rick and Emma, Quickstep to the Theme song from “Green Acres”… it’s a great song but the combination of Rick/QS/Week 2 i just can’t see it… hopping for the best…
@ Dora
Karina and Corbin danced a Viennese Waltz to the Theme from Game of Thrones. Jennifer and Derek danced the Foxtrot to the Theme song from Married with Children.
Heart, I’ve speculated on that a good bit myself. I think it all started with Nicole, when they gave him one mismatched song after another – I think they were hoping for an Evan win, actually – but when Derek whipped out that Pretty Woman Tango, the 50’s Paso, their quickstep and other brilliant dances they started realizing he thrived under tougher conditions. I mean, I think Derek’s entire trajectory can be traced back to the Futuristic Paso, which was (I think) his second Emmy nomination. It went up another huge step with Nicole and that was all she wrote. I think they throw something crazy at him at least once a season, since many of those have resulted in Emmy nominations.
I do hope they don’t screw him for the, what? 2nd or 3rd time in a row with Team Dance music? I think he was burned out on the whole team dance thing, especially since the other pros seem to sit back and just defer to him. Now that the huge, long winning streak is broken, maybe the pressure will be off for him.
It’s not the music itself, Geri, it’s the dance style they paired it with. Foxtrot?? Not to that music.
Dora, I think I’ll take Derek’s word over yours when it comes to “easy” versus “hard”, if you don’t mind.
Unless you’re a professional choreographer, I don’t really think you should be prejudging any of the song/dance combinations. The producers do NOT have a great track record here.
I do love the abbreviation for Vanilla Ice though: V.ice. I’m stealing that. 🙂
Geri
i know 🙂 DWTS are using songs more then 1 time … and it’s fine why not…
if you referring to what i wrote about Maks’s VW to the theme of GOT, i wrote it for 2 reasons
1. as a GOT fan i LOVE GOT and im a huge Drogo fan… in my eyes it’s weird to see Maks as Drogo since in my eyes there is only ONE Khal Drogo and for sure only ONE Jason Momoa LOL but it’s only in my eyes im sure many Maks’s fans are super excited about the idea… LOL (it was weird to see Corbin also…)
2. as a DWTS fan… with GOT theme song you can do magics and from my point of view on the pros (and again it’s only an observation) i don’t think Maks have the creativity and the ability to take this magic and wow us unlike Gleb/Derek/Sharna/Mark… i feel it’s a waste… i would like to see Gleb/Sharna/Derek dancing to GOT…
PH
I’m not a professional choreographer tho im a dancer for 21 years + i believe i know thing or two about music… 🙂
im not trying to prejudge… it’s only how i feel about the combinations and my expectations as a viewer and as a fan.
i know i might be wrong with my “predictions” and it’s ok 🙂
I know the producers do NOT have a great track record here and im sure they have their own reasons to combine specific Dance/Song and give it to specific couple…
Im not saying that it’s ok or not… just saying that i think some songs can be hard to work with as a combination with the given Dance style and some songs are more easy to work with… it’s also depends on the pro… and the star… and the fact that it’s only week 2 🙂
Believe me right or wrong im super excited to watch them all tomorrow specially since it’s TV Night 🙂
I’ll still trust Derek’s word over yours, Dora – he said it was very difficult. That doesn’t mean it won’t turn out brilliant.
Also – don’t assume you’re the only one with any kind of knowledge on a subject.
PH
1. im not assuming anything… if i’m not allowed to write here my personal opinion it’s going to be hard to say something at all since im not writing FACTS… i don’t purports to be an expert… it’s just how i see things… only my opinion
2. no one said it won’t turn out brilliant………….. i think this song is not easy to work with and still i put Derek on the “EASY” list only cause i believe it will be amazing cause if there is a pro that can make it work and give us great chore’ it’s going to be Derek…….
Random thoughts at the beginning of the season…Looking forward to the return of the results show! Love seeing more dancing from the pros.
I wonder about the pairings this year. I think that Marilu requested Derek; she appreciates great dance. I think that if Mark were still here, he may have ended up w/Laurie, and Val w/Jana. I think that Val ended up w/Laurie because of his work w/Zendaya, which I think brought out his best. I think that he would have had a cringe worthy “Janelle”esque season w/Jana – I really hope that Gleb does not go that way. I don’t care that Laurie is Val’s partner – she would do awesome w/anyone & I just love her happy personality.
Val is starting out w/2 of his strongest dances (ChaCha & Jive); I expect that those should be well done.
I’m really looking forward to seeing Marilu, Laurie, James & Jana through the season. I look to see some development & improvement w/Calvin, Ryan & Amber; the rest are kind of just meh to me
More recently, when the producers wanted to trip Derek up, they aired a disgusting video of Nastia being ambushed. Trip up accomplished. Not sure they retain any hope that a “difficult assignment” might ever achieve that result.
When Val, of course, gets a “difficult” assignment, he just trades it in for something he likes better. In his “winning” season, his partner contributed a “Let them eat cake” moment aimed at Derek to go along with it.
Funny thing about opinions, Dora – I have one too and I can disagree with you. Funny how that works. Get used to it. It will happen and you don’t get to complain that you can’t share your opinion every time.
I didn’t claim you said it wouldn’t turn out brilliant – I was making a comment, just like you. Again, get used to it.
I hope that Derek hough and his partner win. Season. 23. Dwts.
I really hope that Derek and his partner can pull off this win. If. Derek couldn’t get Laurie for some reason I. Wish that Shasha had gotten any but Val. Laurie isn’t even that fun to watch she has Val. Who will turn into another maks and mlyru in season 19 when he won. Watch Derek partner a 64 give her a run for her money let’s all vote for Derek, so that doesn’t happen
Suzy – I wasn’t watching that season; what video was that? How was Nastia ambushed?
And Val’s fans who always says Derek gets the ringers. And. For that is why he didn’t get Laurie this than I hope that. Val goes home first so I don’t Have to look at him anymore
Re: Ryan dancing last – totally not surprising, given the drama from last week. If he dances last, then of course everyone will stick around to see what happens this time (even all the people who swore they wouldn’t watch because he was on the show…)
I’m hoping Laurie will be in the front half of the show this week, but that’s probably pie in the sky.
#ButterflyWhirl As background, during season 20 both Derek and Nastia were living in New York City and commuting weekly to LA to perform on the show. In a freak accident after the show on week 6, Derek fractured a toe on one foot and sprained his ankle on the other. The offending footage can be seen here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brK0Wrj3rEY They apparently had been practicing paso doble for 8 hours and just threw a little of the jive in at the end. In this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-e-IEyI3Sk starting at 6:10 you can hear Derek explain the circumstances in an interview after the show. There is another piece of video I can’t seem to find where Nastia talks about how upsetting it was that the producers’ video revived an inaccurate perception of her that she had battled for years. No matter, the video did the trick and they were eliminated the following week, clearing the way for Rumer and Val to “win.” It was billed as a “Shocking Elimination.” It was a “Shameful Elimination.”
PH, when I read that Team Derek was given Ghostbusters, it was clearly a sabotage to break Derek’s winning streak and to give Team CBros more points. There was no way that Derek could choreo something amazing with that song and it seem that he didn’t even fight that hard. Thank goodness, Derek has won inspite of the manipulations.
And here we go again, with Derek and Marilu going first for the second week in a row. I wish TPTB would play fair. We are just going to have to vote our tails off for them!
And it is true that Derek does amazing things when challenged like the Futuristic Paso! I think he is award winning successful because of the musical and choreo creative challenge, not because he wants to win the mirror ball or beat the CBros. He appears to have a different mindset to DWTS compared to the CBros.
Can’t wait for the show tomorrow!
So Ryan danced to Call Me Irresponsible last week and this week he’s dancing to The Muppets theme. What’s he gonna get next week, Little Lies by Fleetwood Mac?
Is this the actual dance order for tonight above, #Heart (138) ??? I didn’t realize that! Marilu and Derek dance first again??? I was waiting for numbers in red or something to show the dance order.
Can’t wait for tonight!
Derek and Mark are also the only pros who actually work with the band to tweak the music so it fits better, like Mark did to make the Toy Story song a Quickstep and like Derek is doing now to give the Taxi song more a a Foxtrot feel (at least he said he was trying to do that).
This is my prediction of tonights scores

Thanks Suzy! It certainly wasn’t a very positive spin for Nastia, and really painted her in a bad light. But commuting all season, and then at the end of an eight hour practice, of course she’d be tired – give a girl a break, people!
I took a major break from DWTS in the middle of Season 19 – Season 18 had left such a bad taste in my mouth, and I just couldn’t take it anymore. I just started paying attention again this summer, and I had been wondering if Val really earned that win, or if it had been handed to him, like Maks’ was in Season 18; welp, that question’s been answered. Sigh… I was hoping things had gotten a little better.
Meggie – The dance order above (other than Ryan) just looks like it’s last week’s dance order. I doubt it’s the actual order for tonight, but I don’t know. Princess Heidi or Courtney or Vogue could probably answer that best.
Yeah, the only one we are sure of as far as dance order goes looks like Ryan and Cheryl. Most of the time George from ABC7 has the dance order posted around 5-6PM EST.
@Heart, they never let any couple go the same order they went the week before especially since there are 13 couples on the show.
That’s NOT the dance order. When I find out the order I put it below the couples names and sometimes, if I have time, rearrange them. When I make the post, I copy the previous week’s post, so the old dance order remains until we find out the new one.
Thanks PH and everyone for the dance order info! I didn’t think that was the week 2 dance order, but there’s so much awesome info on this site, I’m never sure whether I’ve missed something or not! (a good problem to have! Thank you mods!)
I’m cautiously optimistic about most of these dances- and a little surprised (but happy) that we getting so many ballrooms dances and not being bogged down by contemporary and jazz already.
Not shocked that they are putting Ryan last- build up the suspense and make people stay tuned to see if someone crashes the dance again. I really, really hope that the show doesn’t revolve around it and turn into another “is Tamar dancing- lets get an update every minute.”
I’m most excited for James, Calvin, and Marilu- my three favorites right now
I’m most interested in seeing Terra, Vanilla, and Amber. Terra because I don’t know how the “in hold” is going to work, Vanilla because I’m curious to see if he he is actually a decent dancer or just good at his genre of dance, and Amber because she looked super uncomfortable last week and I’m hoping that’s a fluke.
@PHeidi….Thank you for providing us with up-to-date information on each new week dance list. I know you, Courtney and Vogue have your own personal lives to keep you busy and I appreciate all you do in this website and also not forgetting what John does for us.
I have never regretted leaving ABC’s member site (don’t think it exists now), ever since I joined PureDWTS at the beginning of Season 17.
LOL! I just noticed this video of Terra and the music to “Bewitched.” It was my one of my favorite shows when I was a young girl. So clever how they reversed this to make it look like Terra is performing her “witch moves” by making the clothes and shoes come to her from the floor.
Can’t wait for the show tonight!!! I love this woman in real life!!
Kkat, Bewitched was one of my favorite shows too.
Thank you for posting all of the dances and songs. I thought Jake and Jenna had Go Diego Go but Val was singing it all over his IG stories yesterday so I was confused. I can’t keep up. Glad you all can.
I missed the show last week and had to play catch up on sm this week. I hope Maureen just had a “Betsy” moment on her first night and will recover tonight. I’d like to see her stay in a few more weeks anyway.
Quick running order thoughts regarding couples in danger, bad slots for Rick and Jake. Not sure if first is good or bad for Maureen, risk of being forgotten but at the same time going first in the opening two weeks is normally decent for votes as lots of people are tuning in from the start. Vanilla Ice gets the turn of the second hour yet again! To be honest all those couples in the firing line from last week risk being forgettable to be honest including Amber, Terra and Babyface. From Laurie onwards all the big guns come out who can easily put the other couples in the shade.
Jake’s slot doesn’t seem too bad; he’s closing out the first hour. I think going first might be okay for Maureen, especially since she’s paying triubte to her own show, one that is still to this day adored by many! Jana, Rick, and Calvin (AGAIN? Really?) got the three worst positions which makes me think either their dances aren’t that great, they’re not getting a lot of votes, or they’re doing better than TPTB would like and they’re trying to hinder them a bit. Annoyed Ryan is last after going 12th just last week but I understand why.
I have a funny feeling Ryan will be overscored tonight 🙂
Nah Julia, it’s probably that they have to have someone good early on to keep people interested, hence Jana going second. Both Marilu and James did it last week and it’s certainly not going to be TPTB’s favourite couple Laurie and Val this early in the competition, so Jana gets the crap slot this time. I’ve always thought when their are 13 couples that anywhere from 2-6 is terrible as you just get forgotten about once the second hour kicks in.
So good knowing the dance order in advance – have conveniently scheduled my tea-break for when Laurie & Val are up.
