HQ Photos Of Dancing With The Stars Season 23 Week 2 Night One – Which costumes did you like the most and the least?
Below are some photos of Dancing With The Stars Week 2 courtesy of Getty Images. To see more, just click the photos. I think I was wowed the most on Sharna and James costumes. Sharna’s hair was just stunning! Jana and Gleb looked so beautiful too. Least fave: Jenna and Jake! Who had your favorite and least favorite costumes?
I agree about Sharna&James costumes. I really liked them, plus she looks so happy to be dancing with him that she has a lovely glow this season.
I also liked Ice&Witney’s costumes, especially her Peg Bundy look. The costume dept. captured Peg’s slightly seedy glamour perfectly.
I loved Emma’s Eva Gabor look. I want a duplicate that I can waft about the house in.
Jenna’s look was……….interesting. Did no one tell her that having it look like she had on a bedazzled merkin was maybe not such a good idea?
?
I think Maureen and Artem’s costumes look great along with Jana and Gleb and Terra and Sasha. Jenna and Jake’s costumes genuinely bothered me.
Susan, I think Sharna has a “glow” too. You nailed it for how she looks so happy this season verses others.
There’s a definite peace about Sharna that we haven’t seen for several seasons. It’s nice to see her back to operating at 100% with a partner that’s invested, eager to learn, and emotionally stable. I loved her Instagram story last night – I feel like her concern isn’t so much “win, win, win” this season as it is “enjoy the experience”. And I feel like that’s when you really go far – when you focus less on the result and more on the journey itself 🙂 Pulling for her & Hinch!
Jana and Gleb along with Alison and Babyface looked amazing. I loved Witney’s look, too. Jenna’s look really reminded me of Janel’s look for ger Salsa Trio. That was the first thing that came to mind, and all I could think was she should have just worn THAT outfit since it was a similar style and she wouldn’t have had the 70s porn muff distracting everyone. Diego and Kitty hit puberty, I guess ???
The general assumption in the room by everyone (mostly Val, I wager) is probably that Laurie is going to win. That does an AMAZING thing to many of the other competitors – it FREES them, IMO, to choreograph, perform and act in a way that makes them likable. They aren’t feeling pressure or stress – just enjoying the experience and creating. We might see some of Sharna’ best choreo this season because of this. Hell, we might see several of the pros just kill it with one stressor seemingly removed – for a while, anyway. Val and Laurie so do NOT have this in the bag. If Sharna, Lindsay, Derek…maybe Gleb…are all happy with their partners and feeling stress free?? Val may be in trouble. We’ll see in the next few weeks if he’s got the chops to take Laurie to a MBT. We’ll also see how badly the producers want him to have #2.
Sharna also seems to get along with Hinch’s girlfriend like gangbusters, so I’m sure that helps make things go smoother.
I’m just glad nobody is tryna #ShoshannaWhatSheMissing 😛
Derek in those jeans!
Amen to those jeans, Becky. I thought Marilu looked really beautiful too.
I thought the white line of fringe in Marilu’s jive costume last week was a glaringly ‘off’ note in Derek’s long line of beautifully costumed partners, but this week was SO pretty and flattering, and so true to the Taxi characters – while being perfect for a foxtrot.
Sharna and James looked gorgeous last week (I LOVED the matching shoes!), but her stiff dress could have been improved mightily with a different, flowy fabric. This week was just another dirty, ripped prom dress and suit, but I’m not sure how else to signify ‘zombie’…
Babyface and Allison have looked great both weeks, and I loved the almost-black green of her dress and his lining and piping this week, but it’s SO annoying to have dancers in all black with an all-black background – and lasers in our eyes! I kinda want to SEE the dancing! I thought that, both weeks, Babyface has out-ball-roomed Allison. He was so smooth last week while she was so frenetic, and this week he had really nice lines and extensions while she looked un-extended and even a bit tentative. He could have been the pro while she looked like the celeb just learning. (Oh. Did I say that?) I really wanted her to spend her season and summer off LEARNING ballroom. She didn’t.
Sasha has been so good with both of Terra’s dresses! They look good because the dresses flatter her figure, fit the style, and flow with the dance. And both dances looked natural and full of the content of the specific dance. Bravo!
I think Gleb has made some real errors in his costuming. To make a Viennese Waltz look like a Tango with the choreography is not a good thing, but to have a costume that is a true tango dress, with double slits to the top of the thighs, in the FRONT of the legs, in a column skirt, with tacky lace underwear for a top, for a Viennese Waltz, is just wrong. And then to do a tango this week that is all tricks requiring pressure on the exact spot that is injured is just as wrong! Just how good a choreographer is he if he can’t do a sexy Viennese Waltz that actually looks like a Viennese Waltz, or a tango (without the lift at the beginning that didn’t get called) that didn’t take his partner and her injury into account? I am not a dancer or a choreographer, but after watching all 23 seasons I (how does one emphasize an already capitalized word like ‘I’?) could choreograph a sexy, sultry, full of footwork, upright tango that didn’t compound her injury. Reference Derek’s tango with Jennifer, for example. I can’t even remember the dress because it was all tangled up in spins and spinning leans the whole time.
I loved the way Whitney adapted the teeny, tight mini (that was all the character ever wore) from Married With Children to the dance with the transparent extension – they both looked great. Last week, too. And he’s not half bad a dancer, with a great attitude, too!
Maureen has looked a bit dull both weeks, but at least the dresses have been of flattering cuts and shapes. Artem should step it up. A lot. Those tiny polka-dots this week would have been much more ’70’s Brady Bunch had they been more brightly colored, and much bigger. ALL of the Brady Bunch onstage should have been brighter.
So far this season Lindsay has done ‘uniform’ and ‘uniform with no pants’ and then an Urkel with his pants dropped to his waist, and those pants fit. SO not Urkel! He needed the pants up to his armpits, and loose. And I didn’t understand the light-weight, not-a-flattering-length-dress-that-didn’t-go-with-the-shoes on herself. But then – I never watched much Family Matters…
Jenna has dressed herself in as little as possible both weeks, yet put Jake in a loose, cumbersome, completely unflattering outfit this week. Why?
Maks hasn’t a clue as to how to costume a woman in any flattering way. I thought the rhinestoned leo looked amazing last week, but it was covered by such a stiff, unflatteringly shaped skirt that it almost killed the top half for me. Then, to try to do a Viennese Waltz this week in such a short, tight, stiff skirt gave her no room to flow. If she could.
I really loved Emma’s take on Green Acres – she was a beautiful Eva Gabor and Rick played the hick farmer to a T. I think he also ‘danced the character’ really well. And they both looked great last week, too. He’s a better dancer than the judges claim, I think.
Cheryl took the opposite approach to the costuming than all the other pros – she only suggested their characters in the color of the costumes and did nothing literal. That MIGHT have worked had the dance itself looked more like Muppets dancing, but it didn’t. So I found it difficult to see them as Miss Piggy and Kermit, especially since she did nothing to make Ryan’s legs look skinny or herself look in the least bit round. I also felt they both looked swallowed up by their suits, especially Ryan… They looked really good last week.
And then there is Val. Last week he made Laurie into a mirrorball, instead of ‘American’ looking, and this week I would never have guessed that they were dancing to Duck Tales had I not known the song. Why were there no feathers, no hint of a little jacket on either of them, with white for the duck feathers below the jacket? It’s Disney – Laurie would have looked adorable with a big bow in her hair and some feathers floating around! Val looked so big and so heavy, and that red dress was not right, or very flattering, on Laurie, either. I think Val must have thought that dress would reference Minnie Mouse, maybe, for the Disney aspect, because she couldn’t be a ‘boy’ nephew, but I got nothing referencing DUCKS in the whole performance… Besides which – Scrooge McDuck would have had a bunch of GOLD BARS lying around, with GREENBACKS in piles to fall back into and to throw around – not a chest to climb laboriously up to, only to fall into all of that flimsy gold paper! That was just wrong!
And they sure didn’t dance anything over the 8’s they got. Is Laurie a ‘Shawn/Nastia’ dancer, or is she really an ‘Aly’ dancer? It’s really hard to say at this point. Shawn and Nastia both came out of the gate with flow and musicality informing every move, while we wondered why Mark’s choreo didn’t show off Aly very well. To me, Laurie lies in-between, nudging towards Aly a bit… She needs good choreo and good costumes, and good teaching. Will she get all that from Val, or will she just get the free ride Rumer got?
Have to disagree with you Laurie R.
I actually loved Ryan and Cheryl’s outifts and thought thank God for not being so literal. They looked classy and cute. It is a ballroom competition they are supposed to be participating in. I don’t see the difference between Halloween week and every other week where they dress up so literally…like Maks and Amber.
I think they should use the characters as inspiration but not be so literal…for me its a huge turnoff, especially when the performance isn’t that great. It gets way to gimmicky.
But who knows maybe TPTB encourage being so literal and not using ones imagination. It was refreshing for me to see Ryan and cheryl draw inspiration from but not copy completely.
My absolute favorite costume yesterday was EMMA! She was absolutely stunning as Lovey! I also loved Megatron Urkle!
My favorites were Emma and Rick as LISA AND OLIVER from Green Acres
Lindsay and Calvin as LAURA AND URKEL from Family Matters
Terra and Sasha as Samantha and Darin from Bewitched
and Marilu and Derek as Bobby(?) and Elaine from Taxi
The only truly cringeworthy costume was Jenna’s lion/leopardess getup with the misplaced fringe. YUCK JUST YUCK
Narice I think Derek was representing Christopher Lloyd’s character, Reverend Jim.
Reverend Jim with a great ass, you mean. 😉
Derek did a bit of Reverend Jim backstage, but onstage I believe he was Bobby, the unemployed actor. He definitely was NOT Reverend Jim, with those obvious, over-the-top physical quirks and standing-on-end hair.
Agreed Laurie that may well have been his intention but he’s too good looking to play Rev. Jim
I believe Bobby was always dressed in his best audition clothes, usually with his shirt buttons opened down the front. Derek’s magic trick at the beginning of the dance was clearly in the Reverend Jim mold. Lloyd’s hair didn’t really stand on end in Taxi — that came later in the BTTF franchise when he played a wacked out scientist. I do think that Marilu said in an interview that it was Lloyd’s character.
And very definitely with a great ass, I mean. :-))
Jenna’s was horrible!!!! What in the h–l were the costume people thinking ?! I just look like she was a kitty cat with a large patch of pubic fur!!!
