Derek Hough Blogs About DWTS Season 23, Week 3 – “I Wasn’t Upset”
Yeah, as we guessed, DWTS was making a mountain out of a molehill – no shocker there. Since Derek is actually a nice man, he doesn’t take any shots at anyone like others would be tempted to do. What sounds really great is the stuff he’s put together for Tuesday…and how many other DWTS pros scored an invite to Hollywood’s Night Under the Stars? 😉 I’ve put a couple excerpts below, but I suggest you read the whole thing at TV Guide – he’s very chatty this week. 🙂
I want to clear the air about something: I know Marilu said in the clip on the results show that she thought I was upset with her, but I wasn’t. I wasn’t upset with her or about the scores. “Upset” is the wrong word. I was just bummed out because I just knew she could perform it better. Our dress rehearsal was better. I’m with her when she does it fantastically. I just want everyone to see that. I’m not disappointed in her. I’m not upset with her. I’m proud of her. I just want people to see how great she is. She loves the show so much and I want her to look her absolute best.

I’m also performing a results show number with the troupe and some outside dancers. It’s to a song I wrote with Lindsey Stirling, so we’re going to debut it! I just threw the routine together yesterday and hopefully it turns out good. I’m going to play the drums and I will be tapping and drumming against myself at one point. One of the dancers in it is Marie Poppins, who does a really cool section with Allison Holker with mirrors. I saw her do it on social media and there’s a piece in the music that has a similar vibe for it, so I called her up to ask if she could come do it. There’s also going to be some Argentine tango in there. It’s going to be a really cool performance. I’m very excited about it!
On Saturday, I’m going to be performing at the Motion Picture Fund. George Clooney’s hosting, Barbra Streisand’s performing, and Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway will be there too. I have no idea how I scored an invite! When I found out the other attendees, I was like, “Crap!” No pressure, right? The theme is Old Hollywood, so I’m going to do Singin’ in the Rain, which I’ve done before, and also an Argentine tango. I’m cheating a little bit, but I figured it was easiest to keep it in line with what I’m already doing this week. It should be a really fun night!
He shouldn’t have left her alone feeling as though she failed to the point she had to tell her husband about it after he noticed how upset she was. It would have been a right thing to explain his feelings to her right away as something like that can fester throughout the rest of the season with her getting it into her head that he’s not really happy with her (she’ll think it’s her age). Reminds me of what Keo did to Kim last season when he had a tantrum and left the soundstage while Kim stood around dejected and confused, not knowing what was going on.
OR, Kerenza, the show could stop following all the celebs around with a stealth cam looking to exploit their most vulnerable moments, when silly insignificant stuff happens between two people. Clearly, based on ALL the other evidence, everything has been talked through and explained. For all you (and we) know, Derek said “Hey I’m going for a drink of water” and walked away because she was talking to her husband.
But you go ahead and buy the narrative they are selling.
I think Derek has explained what happened in a clear and concise way. He and Marilu seem fine. Let it go and let the producers go and spin something stupid elsewhere. I can’t wait to see what Derek has created for Tuesday night!!
Derek’s human like the rest of us. I believe him when he says he wasn’t mad, but disappointed for Marilou because the rehearsal went so well and he wanted so badly for her to shine. I think he let the moment get to him, but not in the way the producers played it. They know he’s the focal point of the show and they are desperate for ratings right now IMO.
Kerenza, I would have let your response stand if you hadn’t turned into an ass at the end. You reveal yourself, sweetie.
Just another example of how TPTB like to stir up drama and make a big thing out of nothing. Those who know Derek know that he goes out of his way to have an open and honest relationship with his celeb partner and fix an issues between show nights. Derek and Marilu are going to be just fine and I expect to see some great stuff from them.
Amazingly, KKat, there seem to be people who DON’T get that. We have been watching these people on this show for more than ten years now – there are patterns of behavior and personality. Derek isn’t Maks or Val.
Isn’t Derek the one who said this is a POSITIVE show…celebrating positivity? I think his response to Kym was very telling of the type of partner he is (a caring one).
Kinda sickening when you think about producers sitting behind a screen listening to every little private (well not so much obviously) conversation, word, burp, breath, facial expression to catch you on and blow out of proportion or play some instigating background music.
Ready to see a REDEMPTION week (even though they don’tdesperately need it) for Marilu AND Derek. 🙂
Beautiful blog…love Derek’s honesty, insight, and positivity. I posted a fairly lengthy comment on PDH…can’t really consolidate! #teamhennergy 🙂
Rob Wade is dragging this show(what’s left of it)into the ground. I can’t believe I am saying this, but I really miss Conrad.
