Private Members Area – DWTS Season 23 Season Week 5 Discussion
It’s time again for Dancing with the Stars chatter! You know the deal. Share your thoughts and insights on this week’s episode of Dancing with the Stars. If you’re not a Pure DWTS Insider yet, you can do so here. If you are, then I look forward to the discussion in the comments.
It’s time for most memorable year. Did you shed some tears? I usually do on these nights? Any choices that surprised you? I’m sad that Vanilla Ice is gone. I’d have been really interested to see what he’d have said was his most memorable year and stories from that year. Oh well.
Anything else stand out on tonight’s episode? Seems like the show is finally back into its regular rhythm with the debates and football out of the way?

I loved last night’s show. I was glad no one was eliminated. I loved all the dances and I especially loved how Marilu had a break through last night and just in time. I also loved the opening pro number. Just beautiful.
I agree Vogue! I’m THRILLED Marilu finally had her breakthrough last night! The costumes were all beautiful and honestly given how well she’d done in previous weeks, Laurie should’ve been scored lower IMHO because Calvin and even Maureen had better performances last night but were scored 1 pt lower.
Why do I have a feeling that It’s now Marilu who’s sinking into the background? I still feel that Amber is going home next week, likely followed by Maureen. And I’m sorry but I’m still not feeling Jana or Terra. I’d still love to see what Amber could do if she gave it 100%. Last night’s performance was still kinda soft and she’s moving small.
I guess we will see and let our votes do the talking.
Both Deep Throat and I have been super-busy these past few weeks, so we haven’t gotten to talk much about the show – but we did get to chat a bit last night, and I do have one teeny little bit o’ tea to spill…
…apparently the crew don’t really care for Jana. As Deep Throat put it, “she’s rude to the pions”, which I kinda took to mean “She thinks she’s hot sh*t and treats some of the crew like crap.” Other than that, the crew seems to really like everyone else…even Amber, who had been rumored to be “difficult”.
Thanks for the tidbit! Hearing that about Jana makes perfect sense. To me she just doesn’t seem relatable. I wanted Gleb to be one of my favorites this season but all I’m left with is the snooze button from these two.
Hmm, interesting about Jana! I have kind of felt a vibe from her all season that she was playing a part, so maybe what we are seeing is acting? Although, since I have yet to really “feel” her when she dances, she must be a better singer than dancer, LOL. It’s kind of what I sense with Terra, I just get a weird vibe from her, not sure why?
Marilu appears to have settled on “being a tough taskmaster but I love him” as her go-to when she’s asked about Derek. I do not recall any other partner of Derek’s ever referring to him as tough anything. Curious if anyone else has thoughts about this.
I didn’t take it that seriously. Maybe he’s just a found a way that works for her…which isn’t easy. I don’t think she meant it in a bad way. And btw, she only said it once (that I can remember) and it was in a cute and joking way in my opinion.
Er, I think all of Derek’s partners have called him tough or implied he was tough…and I don’t see anything wrong with that. Most of the time in the packages you can tell he’s tough. You don’t win 6 times and earn two Emmys by being a slacker.
Not sure why you’re taking that as a pejorative.
Got a little bit of tea to spill for the coming week…
*DT is actually very impressed with Calvin & Lindsay’s Argentine tango – particularly that they are able to pull it off to the song “Hotel California”. DT, like Heidi & I, is also baffled as to why Calvin keeps getting lowballed in his scores…only explanation he/she could come up with is maybe that Calvin’s running order is making it harder to give him higher scores.
*DT, like myself, is rather bored by Jana & Gleb, and says their A. tango is set “at a hotel” with a shower and a bed…I’m gagging already. Apparently Jana said earlier in the season that she’s doing DWTS “to get back at her cheating husband”…to which Gleb quickly replied “Honey, I’m married and I have a daughter.” Glad to see Gleb shooting down any potential showmancing, given his track record of dubious fidelity. Anywho, apparently Jana accidentally kneed Gleb in the balls this week, and explained it away with something like “well, you probably said something to deserve it at one point or another”. Given that she said this (and that she apparently isn’t terribly popular amongst the crew)…I’m getting the impression that Jana may be a bit of a low-key bitch. I’m willing to cut her a bit of slack, given what she’s going through with her husband, but still…not sure that she’s making a ton of friends on-set.
*Apparently Marilu’s dance is “really cute” and has a lot of fun dips, and should get a good score if she can pull it off.
Thanks for the scoop, Court – I wonder if Jana & Gleb’s AT is trying to evoke the smoldering sultriness of Mark & Paige’s “behind the blinds” themed AT – which I personally thought was the dance of the year. We’ll see if this is just a pale imitation or if it exists on its own merits.
As far as her personality goes, I haven’t seen anything that makes me dislike or like her at all. The fiancee has been a fan of hers since she was in some commercial and thinks she’s absolutely stunning. So he pays attention during all of her dances lol.
A hotel? Really? How original (rolls eyes)! I’m glad I’m not watching live and I can avoid what should be a puke fest! So, if Gleb shot her down saying he’s married, why play along with this showmance thing? Is he unwilling to go agains TPTB? It’s really too bad as coming into the season I didn’t have much of an opinion of Jana, in fact I felt bad for her given her apparent bad luck with men. But, I can’t stand the showmance route, even when it’s real (I.e Kym and Robert)
I sure hope Calvin gets a better running order for a change and if they still low ball him, I’m going to be really unhappy! Also, keeping my fingers crossed that Marilu has finally had the breakthrough that she needed and she stays out of her own head and performs well! I am anticipating Laurie “bouncing back” and returning to the top of the leader board!
Robert and Kym were not a “showmance” – for a couple reasons. For one thing, they tried very hard to keep it on the DL and not use it to get ahead. It was the producers stealth cam (really, people are worried about Billy Bush with these people around?) that got it out there. For another thing – a “showmance” by definition, is something that just happens on the show. Once it becomes…or if it always was…real life, it’s not technically a showmance any longer. Showmances are generally fake or only last the duration of the show. Hence the “show” part of the name.
PH! I know that Kym and Robert don’t technically qualify as a showmance. I guess I should have used another couple. I just don’t like the pushing of any relationship whether real or not by TPTB in their effort to boost ratings or get “the scoop”. It turns me off, even of celebrities that I might otherwise like. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
I’m so happy to hear that Gleb is standing up for his marriage and family. Well done!
Hopefully TPTB will soon get it together and position Lindsay and Calvin in the latter half of the show. Lindsay is the Bomb! And I have no doubt that their AT will be amazing.
FWIW, it seems like TPTB are the ones forcing the showmance route – and Gleb is only very begrudgingly going along with it. DT mentioned that they wanted him to say something along the lines of “I want to give Jana confidence, confidence is sexy!” and I guess Gleb responded with something like “Is it??? Cause sometimes it can be very off-putting.” Given that her husband’s sex addiction is what’s in the news right now, I’m guessing they’re looking to build upon that by possibly starting talk of a showmance…but if they really wanted that, I think they would have been better off pairing her with Artem or Val, who aren’t taken. Throwing her with Gleb and then trying to make this happen just seems…icky.
That’s funny and makes me like Gleb even more. I like that he’s not afraid to speak up.
Jana is one of the prettiest people they’ve ever had on the show. She reminds me a lot of Hayley. They’re both stunningly beautiful. So, I’m with Fig’s fiance.
Sad. I wish they’d just keep it about dancing. It’s like they are just using Gleb for a pretty face and drama….and not for his talent. I feel sorry for him having to put up with this and Jana.
Vogue, I agree, it makes me sad. Gleb is stuck walking a fine line with this showmance crap. After working his way back to DWTS, I’m sure he wants to keep his pro spot for next season. So he can’t just say “forget it, I’m not doing that.” The DWTS producers really seem like the worst kind of Hollywood pond scum to me.
I’ve pretty much checked out of this season of DWTS although I’m still watching Hinch, Marilu, and Calvin’s dances online. Hinch gets my vote support because I think he’s fabulous in every way, and he’s the only one with a snowball’s chance of keeping the mirrorball out of Val’s utterly undeserving hands.
That doesn’t surprise me at all that the producers are trying to push the showmance on Gleb and Jana, but I’m thrilled that he’s pushed back. While I partially wonder what fallout will come of it in subsequent seasons, I’d hate to compromise a marriage and family – and one that is rebuilding at that – for the sake of some producers’ whims. I felt the same appreciation when Emma squashed the Alek talk, which I’m sure TPTB gave a huge case of showmance blueballs.
John – Hayley is his other favorite. Add Sharna and Lindsay’s legs into that and he’d be a happy man.
Fig,
He sounds like a good man. Better put a ring on it
