PureDWTS Season 23, Week 10 – Who’s Dancing What…And When?
Every week is a gimick. What happened to making them dance two individual dances. And as I’ve been saying for a few seasons now, the freestyles aren’t even special anymore because every dance is a damn production. Just DANCE already!!
I have no idea from reading Sharna’s blog if she and James have the AT for their individual dance or their trio, so I stuck it where it is for now, until we find out more.
ETA: Entire song and dance list from DWTSGossip – not sure where she got it from since I just got back from lunch. 😉
Calvin and Lindsay

Don’t know if you’ve seen it yet, but based on instagram accounts, Alan is in Jana & Gleb’s trio (Jana’s instagram) and it seems Witney is in Calvin & Lindsay’s trio (Witney’s instagram). 🙂
According to ET Facebook live Maks is unsurprisingly in Val/Laurie’s Trio. According to Jenna’s Instagram she’s in James/Sharna’s Trio.
I think you have it right that AT is James and Sharna’s individual dance, PH. The way it’s worded is “we have the trio with Jenna…” “And also we have the AT…”
It’s one of those instances where audio would’ve helped, though. Lol.
Sharna will be back on Monday dancing!!! I just read it on Eonline!!
I believe that I saw on the Instagram stories that Witney is with Calvin and Lindsay. Also Alan is with Jana and Gleb.
Pretty sure it’s been confirmed that Lindsay picked Witney for their trio, Gleb picked Alan, and Val picked Maks. Pretty standard, aside from Sasha picking Artem. I thought he would have went for Derek. However, this is probably more likely because of Derek’s schedule than Sasha actually wanting Artem above Derek, so I can’t complain too much. In all honesty, Sasha didn’t have a lot of choices. Usually, I love when Lindsay and Witney work together to create a dance. This time, I’m a bit nervous Witney’s height might get in the way. Calvin is well over a foot taller than Witney, and Witney’s also never danced with Calvin before. It might have been smarter for Lindsay to pick a taller female pro such as Emma. Either way, it’s not my choice. Sharna and Gleb were kind of obligated to choose Jenna and Alan because they helped when they were injured, so that’s also pretty standard. Since we had so many female pros gone early, and not that many male pros to choose from, there weren’t too many choices. Val was also kind of obligated to choose Maks, being his brother after all. I would rather have Maks in a trio than Keo or Dennis, so I can’t say I’m too upset. Overall, the choices were very anticipated.
I’m actually excited to see Artem in a trio with Sasha and Terra. He is quite creative and I’m sure will help Sasha out with some choreo.
The partners were picked at the end of the show. All access red room showed a bit where Sasha whispered his choice to Terra and she chose the partner off the board.
@Alison, I kind of have to disagree. I think Lindsay and Witney are a great duo for a trio. They end up looking like twins, dance similarly, get along, and it helps focus our eyes on the celeb. Visually, if they chose a taller female pro It might look discombobulated with three different heights.
I don’t know why Maks was chosen. Bleh. Rather see Keo and Val do a samba with Laurie.
All of these choices seem reasonable except if I were Val, I would have gone with Artem for Laurie. I was curious to see Artem with Terra & Sasha (as he is one of the beefiest males and is not a height match for the team) and immediately went to thoughts of I wonder if Artem will be picking up Sasha as Sash has done with Terra this season? Comedy was my first impression of this grouping. (but then I go there easily)
Looks like Derek wasn’t an option on the board at all probably due to the couple otherwise having to adjust to his schedule.
Would have also liked Alison with Jena & Gleb. She’s a strong female pro and may have been helpful with choreo & pointers. Jena has been a bit clingy about Gleb and Alison could have helped refocus on the task at hand.
I hope Terra and Sasha have an argentine tango for their trio. I think it would be cool to see something like that, that may be difficult to handle. But, they could make it work.
Also, any word on Cheryl coming back at all for pro numbers like Maks or Allison? I recently learned she tried out for Roxy in Chicago, but didn’t get it. ?
Seven Nation Army will never go away, will it?
I doubt Derek was an option – I may have dreamed this, but I would swear they are taping the Thanksgiving/Christmas specials on the 13th. In any case, everyone involved (Julianne, Nappytabs and others) are already in Orlando and Disney World…everyone except Derek, due to Hairspray. I imagine Julianne will be back for the live show on Monday, but I don’t see anyway that Derek was remotely available for a partner that wasn’t his own.
I can’t even imagine this boy’s schedule.
ETA: Just saw on Twitter that Derek is also at Disney World with his sister and Kelly Clarkson. This person who saw them kinda hit the jackpot. 🙂
EmnEm, I just read the press release and sadly there is nothing said on new pro Numbers in it or other Entertainment.
Terra/Sasha/Artem have a tango trio? has someone actually ever done a tango trio on this show?
Imma just going to say, thank you producers for finally giving us a Gotan Project Tango. You’ve been missed.
calvin’s trio is salsa, not samba
Does it seem like the past several seasons have gotten really standard-ballroom heavy (as opposed to earlier seasons being Latin-ballroom heavy)?
In addition to foxtrot and quickstep, some couples will have already done regular waltz, Viennese waltz, ballroom tango, AND Argentine tango…in Season 19 and earlier, I remember couples only doing 1 kind of waltz and tango each.
Just watched a video of a tango to Gotan Project’s Santa Maria online. This is potentially a true showstopper for James and Sharna.
Do the stars get scores from the judges on the trio dance as well?
In the past the stars have gotten scores on the Trios, I don’t think that will change. As for Gotan Project, one of my all time faves is probably a lot of people’s Nicole and Derek, season 10. I really love the music of Gotan project to any AT it just gives it so much more flavor than “I can’t feel my face” pop music.
I am one of Derek’s biggest fans-he is this show. I also loved him back with Mark last week, such fun and heart felt love. I just don’t really understand how Derek can’t be available for trios, if he and Marilu weren’t eliminated he would have to be there. I would love to see more Derek and would love another trio with Sasha. Don’t really understand all the explanations of other commitments if they did not plan from the start for him to finish and possibly go all the way. I am just saying they would have to had make time if Marilu could have made it to the end. What is this show thinking???
Lol PJC I think the mods know a lot more about his schedule… But I doubt TPTB would want him in the trio round of they barely gave him proper face-time on camera. I do wish Cheryl was called back for trio round, and she def. free.
No, PJC, if he and Marilu hadn’t been eliminated, she probably would have gone with him to Florida. Derek can’t/won’t ask another couple to go to Florida with him over the weekend when they should be doing blocking and all that.
It’s also very possible that both Derek and Cheryl’s contracts let them out of superfluous stuff that the troupe can do easily. Derek, for example, hasn’t actually been in the last two pro dances. Has Cheryl? Derek’s been standing there with Marilu, but he wasn’t in the dance part. He also didn’t do the manequinn challenge with them either, was sitting off to the side. That’s probably because he missed rehearsals – but if they let him miss rehearsals, they will let him out of pro dances and silly stuff like Trios.
EmnEm, you’re mixing the two concepts. They would take Derek on camera for sure – but they can’t have him win the show. But I think my other theory is more plausible. Derek’s contract.
Oh dear, Jana is going to be in full man eating mode in her trio. Gleb can handle her but watch out Alan! Her IG story with Alan the other day when she was bored made me cringe – just so immature. No wonder Gleb arrives late to rehearsals…
I hope the jive isn’t too taxing on Sharna’s knee. If she has to modify her movements to accommodate for it, I can’t see Jenna doing the same. And glad there’s no Lindsay/Witney paso this time. The ones they’ve done together in trio (Alfonso, Chris, Alek/Carlos, Wanya) sort of all look the same (even just hair and costumes)
There was a photo last week of Artem and Hayley hanging out at Sasha and Emma’s place so it seems like they’re friends outside of the show. And from Terra’s IG story of Artem/Sasha doing moves in hold, they’re a good match physically. Looking forward to see what they create – just hope they don’t start speaking in Russian in her presence. Surely Sasha learnt his lesson after last time.
@Kikki – I’m sure if Sharna’s knee isn’t up to a full jive she’ll figure out a way to make it work, even with Jenna’s over-dancing tendencies. Derek did a jive-trio with Nastia when his ankle was only at the “stepping cautiously” stage of healing.
Well there were two weeks where I liked all the songs so it was eventually going to turn the other way lol. Calvin and Lindsay have great ones. No complaints on that…in fact the trip dance seems like a perfect score dance on paper in my opinion. Jana and gleb is a mixed bag on songs (first one is just so blah but the second is catchy). Laurie has two meh songs in my opinion. Torn on James’ Songs to be honest since they are catchy And I’m sure sharna will think of great choreo but I they wouldn’t be my first choices for the styles. Terra has two great ones though. Heck only dance out of all of them that I’m dreading is Terra and Sasha’s rumba despite the fact I love the song.
Trio not trip. Hate this phone sometimes.
OMG James’s AT song is killer! I can’t wait to see what Sharna creates with that!!!
@Cassanova, I also love Gotan Project!
They performed Santa Maria live on DWTS during Season 14 for a stunning AT choreographed & danced by Karina Smirnoff & Jose Manuel Carreno.
The musical tension & crescendos were perfectly matched by their dance movements & Karina looks amazing!
A live performance of authentic music elevates the dance (and dancers) to a whole other level…
@Nancy you made me go back and watch it. Yep, great Tango music. Interesting I forgot they were on the show! When Derek and Nicole danced it was to live music but it was Harold Wheeler and the orchestra at the time and they did a great job on it. I liked Karinas AT, but I guess I just dont love when ballroom dancers get all angular and intense on it like its a ballroom tango or a Paso. Also, I thought it could have used a bit more polish and practise. Im totally over what Val does, its not supposed to be a whirling dirvish the whole time, it is a romantic dance after all. So Im curious as to how Sharna will handle it.
@PH, true about the contract thing. I definitely agree about that with Cheryl at least. I think she may have wanted to be in these mini sized pro numbers that Witney, Allison, or Maks are in, but her contract kinda was up (at least that’s what her SC story hinted to last Monday night). At least they’ll be back for the finale.
@sonic – Oh I completely forgot about that – thanks for that reminder and reassurance 🙂 I just saw an interview saying James’s Indycar will be a prop in the trio so if Sharna has to manage it a bit like Derek, I’m curious to see how she might involve the car.
I have a strong feeling Laurie is going to kill both of these dances this week! She has great frame in ballroom for Foxtrot and even tho she has the hardest latin dance this week we seen her do some samba moves in her first Dance!
When I hear “Magalenha” by Sergio Mendez I think of the Samba Trio in the Move Live Tour with Derek/Brittany/Nica. It worked really good with 2 girls and 1 guy.
Well, I gotta work Monday..I start my 7 day stretch on Sunday night so I won’t watch. I’m over the Trio dance and Duo pairs…it’s silly…especially Trios with certain song styles. I loved when Kellie and Derek did a Trio with Tristan in S16! He was SO FUNNY! I miss those confessionals. 🙁
I don’t know why you wouldn’t think that was also true with Derek, EmnEm. Why would he still be locked in and Cheryl not? Clearly they are both capable of making their own decision on that – Derek is, going by his blog. And what actually happens.
who are the judges this week?
Hmm. Interesting assignments!
Giving Jana a Quickstep seems a bit alarming to me. Considering they could have given Chacha or Salsa to her. It could actually mean they succeeded in getting her into Finale and don’t see her making it past the top 3 in anyway. This can be a week in which she gets a bit of a hammer rather than undeserved praises.
Laurie is actually in the “10s across the board” territory now and I don’t see her getting any less than atleast two tens for each performance till she wins (even if she doesn’t deserve it). Foxtrot could have been a risky choice in her way but listening to the song just took away all of my doubts.
Was actually very anxious to see James do a Jive. Just worried that he got it as a Trio that too with the Footage-monger!
Calvin is probably going to be great this week, looking at both styles and songs he got!
Terra’s last week most probably, but I think she will do a good Rumba. Will be very excited to see Tango done by 3 people of different physiques on a very fast paced up-beat song! I’m actually very proud of Terra as to what she has been able to do, because I didn’t see her staying this long to actually try and perform a Tango or a Charleston!
I really miss two unlearned dances night though. Trio was fine for Quarter Finals! They should be tested to be able to pull off 2 dances in a week atleast once in a season. I think season 19’s semi finals is one of my most favorite episodes to date.
Even though Gleb was obligated to choose Alan, I’m still internally groaning. I’m prepared for the judges to make comments like, “That was so sexy!” “The chemistry you three have is amazing!” etc., that were fed to them by TPTB. That being said, Gleb didn’t exactly have many choices either. There were only six male pros to start the season, four of them are still here, Derek is far too busy for anything, and Artem was already picked up by Terra and Sasha. Gleb had to pick between Alan, Dennis, and Keo. Dennis is too inexperienced, Keo might have been too tall. So, basically even if Gleb had never been injured, Alan would probably still be the choice anyway. Sometimes things just loop around like that.
Did Gleb say he was obligated to select Alan? I assumed it to be the natural choice since Jana already knows and has danced with him. I hoped for Derek, which would probably have given Jana a clear shot at the finals, but knew it was a long shot.
I would have liked to see Linds with someone other than Wit this time. The first time they did it, it was great, I thought. The second felt a bit like, “been there, done that,” although still good. Witney does seem to have a pretty strong fan base, which could help.
Sasha lucked out with Artem. I expect that will be a winner and I look forward to them the most, but would be surprised if the hype Monday night isn’t about the brothers and Laurie. Will be interesting to see what they put together.
I think the couples chose their partners themselves. Not sure if TPTB highly recommended a choice beforehand and just made it look like the celebs chose themselves for viewers to believe… but who knows.
I wonder if TPTB are gearing up for a redemption dance for Sharna and James. Kinda like a redemption Argentine Tango similar to Hines and Kym after injury, but Kym’s was much more serious and emotional (and rightfully so).
I just hope James and Sharna get a cha cha to 24 k Magic by Beuno Mars for the Finals!
If Sharna was hoping for a “reunion” hype she might have got out played by Val bringing Maks back. It seems there’s lots of fans that want the Chmerkovskiy bros back, and they do that Smothers Brothers “I’m telling Mom” schtick in the packages that grabs the audience. So I think James has to work for every point because just like when he got immunity, it didn’t come with a huge advantage because others got perfect as well. This week Laurie is now the clear front runner making up the two point advantage from week 8 and adding 6 points to her overall score. Hinch’s story and journey on the show is more interesting and being more tested, but the show is handicapping the advantage for Laurie and even Jana. He will have to get it done this week or Laurie is going to walk away with it.
Very well-put Casanova!
I’ve felt the same about Laurie’s and James’s respective journies since Day 1. Laurie has always been the front-runner and James has had to get better than her and prove himself better. One week comes and takes away all his glory. It will be tough for him to win anyways, but even tougher if he doesn’t reclaim himself as a leader in these final two weeks! I would love to see James or Calvin win this season, because it would restore my faith that being a ringer doesn’t always mean a predetermined win! That’s needed for the show to stay an equal level competition, otherwise why bother watching.
I don’t agree with your last part, Casanova – I think that Hinch being on the bottom meant that he likely got more votes this week than ANYONE. Most people who watch and vote on this show have already made up their minds on who they’re going to vote for. The person at the top of the leaderboard is more vulnerable BECAUSE one of the favorites is at the bottom. Overall score doesn’t mean shit – it doesn’t count for anything, except maybe who goes last or something like that. I’m not sure why people get hung up on the overall score – we had this same discussion last season. It means nothing.
Anyway, Laurie’s scores last week don’t increase her odds of winning. Same way that James lower scores don’t decrease his chance of winning. It doesn’t work that way. Whoever is winning the voters and can keep their scores high enough will win. The people who have been watching all along have decided. The people who tune in just for the last two weeks (and that’s usually a good many people) will have to decide who they want to vote for and the packages will play a role in that. But I don’t see Laurie as having a particular advantage over the rest of the crew. Some of us out here don’t care for the Chermkovskiy shtick enough to vote for it.
You’re forgetting something important, Robbie – people (especially Americans, I think) VOTE FOR UNDERDOGS. It’s stupid (sometimes) but it’s true.
By the looks of voters these days, the mirrorball is not in the hands of Laurie just yet! Voters are going crazy this year or maybe Monsanto put something in our veggies lollll so maybe Laurie will lose and James will beat an Olympian. I’d love to see that.
I enjoy the chatter back and forth. I have found the dancing this year to be exceptional, overall. As a Canadian I hope Hinch wins because he has worked hard at this and has improved consistently. He has great personality and chemistry with Sharna. Unfortunately we can’t vote from Canada. Laurie is probably going to win because she has a gymnastics background which gives her an advantage. Calvin is awesome as well. All 3 deserve to make it to the end. Terra is pretty amazing too. May the best dancer win!!!
I’ve read quite a few comments on FB from people saying they started the season supporting Laurie but have been won over by James and have switched their vote to him. Reasons being given like supporting the underdog, the show should be about someone with no experience learning how to dance, and not being overly impressed (or even outright disappointed) with Laurie. Hopefully that reflects the general sentiment. I think the packages they play with their life stories will remind people how amazing James is (‘a champion of life’ if you will, a bit like Bindi and even Nyle) and may work against Laurie especially if it’s focussing on her sheltered life as a young elite athlete.
@PH I trust you are right about Hinch and his popularity taking him into the finals but with two perfect scores and never being in jeopardy it seems Laurie is regaining the momentum she had in the early part of the season.
So, I will be holding my breath as they put James in jeopardy and will be royally bummed if he goes home.
It’s all manipulated, Casanova. It depends on if the audience buys it or not. Besides, no one said that Laurie was in danger this week.
If Hinch can’t get less than 3k more votes than Terra or Calvin, it will be a huge shock. Next week is a new game.
I agree @kikki 100% with you
