Do You Plan To Watch The “Dirty Dancing Remake”, Will It Be A Success (Includes DWTS Alumni)?
Do you plan to watch the “Dirty Dancing Remake“? I was so excited when I first heard about it being the original was one of my all time favorite dancing movies, but, I had a huge let down when they picked Abigail Breslin for the female lead. Even watching the Entertainment Tonight teaser below, I still can’t warm up to her and she seems all wrong for the part where the others fit. 🙁 With that said, I’ll probably still watch it for the dancing and the music. I’m also curious on the actors and actresses playing the other characters….especially Nicole Scherzinger playing “Penny”. Miss Heidi said she feels the same on Abigail. Here are Court’s thoughts….
Courtney: Ehhhh…will I DVR it? Probably. Will I watch in real time? Probably not, unless enough people ask me to live tweet it. Abigail Breslin will forever be Little Miss Sunshine to me, so to see her playing this woman having a sexual awakening is kinda…yucky. Never heard of the dude, and while a relatively-unknown male lead worked out ok for Kenny Wormald in Footloose and Diego Boneta in Rock of Ages, both also had a strong female lead (Julianne Hough) to play off of – and I don’t really consider Abigail a “strong female lead”. I think I would have bought Hailee Steinfeld better as Baby. However, I’m kinda loving the rest of the casting. Two DWTS alums – Nicole Scherzinger as Penny, and Billy Dee Williams as Tito the bandleader? Yes please. Sarah Hyland as Lisa Houseman? Probably not a stretch, since Hayley Dunphy is basically the same character. Loving Debra Messing & Bruce Greenwood as Baby’s parents, although I think Jerry Orbach will always be Dr. Houseman to me 🙂 I adore Katey Sagal, so I’m glad she’s in it – but I hope they find a way to give Vivian Pressman a musical number, because Katey is a KILLER singer. Casper Smart as Billy Kostecki, the guy playing second banana to someone much more popular and hoping that some of it rubs off on him? Somehow, I don’t think he’ll struggle with that 😛
Vogue: Let us know what you think in comments and do you think this movie will be a success? The new Dirty Dancing Remake” is set to premiere on May 24, 2017 on ABC.
Sigh…..Derek would be PERFECT for Johnny Castle. As he’s the next best thing in modern male dancers since Mr Patrick Swayze himself(God rest his soul) and I did kinda name my son Patrick after that man 😉 my boy has rhythm but no official dance lessons. I never saw Little Miss Sunshine it surely, they coulda found someone better to play Frances Houseman.
3 hours??!! That’s unlikely!!
I agree…Derek would have been awesome, but, NOT with the female lead they picked.
Katy Sagal? I’m in. Don’t think I’ll be able to watch live but I’ll probably DVR it.
Courtney – You brought up an interesting point, how you still see Abigail Breslin as a young girl and it being sort of strange to see her in a more grown-up role. I think I recently saw a discussion on this sort of thing in a comment section of another post. It was about how USA gymnastics wants their female gymnasts to appear young and innocent and they sometimes feel stuck in that mold their whole lives, even beyond retirement from their sport. I was thinking a lot about that and I believe the same sentiment can be applied to child actors. Not sure how others feel but I personally think it’s important to recognize that people AREN’T going to be young and innocent forever and to appreciate the time they were while still embracing their “adult” sides as well. I know some people think differently, though.
Struggling with her too!!
The lift picture….point your toes!!! Looks awful. (I realize his arms are not flexed so could be coming up or down….but they released that pic so I judge that pic)
Also, the last clip in that preview she looks so stiff.
Cast dancers who can sorta act or actors who can sort of dance? Or find the brilliant handful who can do it all!
Beck, I agree. My first reactions to watching Abigail in that preview is that she can’t even dance.
@Julia – True, but in this case, I’m not sure that Abigail has really helped the situation much, considering I still only see her playing teenage roles. She’s almost typecast herself, which I think makes it that much harder for viewers take her seriously when she’s supposed to be a more mature leading lady. On top of that, as others have mentioned, she’s just kinda wooden as an actress – and in a role like this, that requires some vulnerability, wooden ain’t gonna cut it.
Derek was chosen for the remake when it was going to be a movie as opposed to the TV version. Thank god he isn’t doing this one. I think it pretty likely that he said no.
I was always lukewarm about the original Dirty Dancing, and what I’ve seen of this reboot has made me cringe despite liking several of the people involved.
Maybe because I’m more into live theater, having this just be another movie that’s THREE hours long is just…nope.
I doubt I will be tuning in. While, there are a couple of interesting cast members, I can’t really see Abigail as Baby. This is one of my all time favorite movies, so I kind of feel ambivalent towards it.
Funny story, first time seeing it we took my friend’s two daughters (about 5 & 6 at the time). We figured anything “racy” would go over their heads. Anyway, Emmy (youngest of the two and always a hoot) during the love scene leans over to me and says “he’s hot!” referring to Patrick. We still laughter about that!
Sometimes a classic should remain a classic. No remake needed.
Apparently Patrick Swayzee wife Lisa is auctioning off some of his belongings. And one of those is the original leather jacket he wore in the movie. Kind of sad.
No likely to watch or DVR. Dirty Dancing is a classic. Remaking it just tarnished it JMO. And having watched Abegail Breslin as Kit Kittredge in American Girl movie a million times with my daughter that’s all I can think of. So no. Just glad Derek isn’t involved.
I just wish they would have left it alone it’s one of those movies that shouldn’t be remade, I would have the same feelings even if Derek was playing in it. However Abigail is a great actress, she is a young adult now, I’m comfortable with her and unlike some I will give it a chance. I do wonder what Patrick’s feelings would have been on it.
Nope. I liked the first movie ok, but I’m not that huge a fan of it.
I’m watching it for sure.. So many people are against this remake. Not sure about some of the cast but interested to see how it turns out, especially for Nicole..
I really still think Derek & Lea Michele with Nicole being Penny could have been an excellent choice.. -oh well.
I wouldn’t choose to watch it personally, but it does sound intriguing. Only reason why. I wouldn’t watch it is due to remake burnout
Love the original “Dirty Dancing” movie with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey…a timeless classic! But based on what I see in this brief video clip, I’m not very impressed. There really will never be another Johnny and Baby played by anyone other than Patrick and Jennifer. They were truly special and magical in those characters. That being said, however, if anyone were to take on that role, Derek would have been a perfect Johnny Castle…but so glad he’s not part of this production. I’ll never forget his performance with Bindi to “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life”…with the iconic lift and all. Absolutely stellar…just loved it!! I’ll probably watch this remake on TV, but so far it doesn’t look like it’s going to compare to the original.
No, won’t watch. Don’t tamper with a classic. I agree, too, that Abigail is not right for role.
If I watch it will probably be after the fact.
I’m not even a little interested in this one. They’d have to sweeten the pot by better actors/dancers for me to watch.
I remember hearing about this TV remake which I’m not a fan of ?. I’m with you guys re. casting-I just cannot picture Abigail Breslin in the lead role of Baby either-I, actually, can picture Sarah Hyland in the role more….
As far as the guys are concerned, nobody can take on the role of Johnny better than Patrick Swayze himself may he RIP, unless they were to find a guy equally as sexy and just as talented a dancer-in my opinion, the guy in the lead role doesn’t fit the bill.
You know the saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”? For me, I won’t be watching….
I remember watching this when we rented the tape and wishing that I had gone to see it in the theater. Won’t watch it – nothing can top the original. Would we want “Gone with the Wind” redone as a TV movie. ABC needs to move on.
Wasn’t a fan of the original but I’m a little bit obsessed with Billy Dee Williams so yes, I will be watching the remake!
Glad to see I’m not the only one who’s not interested
I’m a huge fan of Bruce Greenwood and Katy sagal otherwise I’m not wild about the rest
I wish Hollywood would come up with fresh ideas instead of rebooting everything
Depends…if I’m off work, I’ll watch. If not, then no
Will probably watch because it’s “Dirty Dancing.” But after seeing the trailer, it seems a bit lackluster. Those actors are brave to take on these iconic roles, that’s admirable. But I don’t see any charisma at this point.
