DWTS Season 25, Week 3 – Who’s Dancing What…and When?
Guilty Pleasures week. I seem to recall this was something of a trainwreck last time, although I could be wrong. What to expect is probably a whole bunch of the troupe plus a whole bunch of props and probably not much DANCING.
Winners: I’m sure it’s totally a coincidence that Sasha, Nick, and Vanessa all got Jazz. :::rolls eyes::: Well, at least others will save it for when the competition gets tougher. As for Lindsey getting Jive – I don’t know if it’s necessarily a “win” but that style seems perfect for her personality.
Losers: Nikki doing V. Waltz?? Didn’t she JUST do waltz this past week?? Hosed. And Frankie doing Samba?? He can probably handle it, but his first latin is the hardest one??
ETA: And the running order is starting to come out. Cheryl and TO are doing alright, ain’t they?
Nikki Bella and Artem – Viennese Waltz (Song: “Love on the Brain” by Rihanna)

Just a lot that seems fishy next week. Love Nikki but that dance style and now seems a bit like they don’t care. Victoria getting quickstep is going to be the biggest challenge thus far for her I’d imagine. The thing that really annoys me the most though is that nick and Vanessa big have jazz (which I’m guessing maks is going to mess up anyways given his last one). That’s one too many Jazz this week for me. Any other dance for one of them would have been better.
Jordan and Lindsay doing the Charleston will be so much fun! I actually really like this style of dance.
Another fun dance for Frankie. I think he will do just fine.
Looking forward to Jordan and Lindsey’s dances this week, and of course Derek with Fresh Prince! Also very curious to see how Victoria does with Quickstep, Drew Argentine Tango, and if Nikki can improve from her Walt to the Viennese Waltz.
Frankie’s first Latin was this past week with the Cha-Cha, and while I do expect him to drop in scores I think he’ll be able to maintain most of his support. 🙂
Oof. Thoughts:
*I’m with you, Heidi – awfully convenient that the married couple and the member of the ABC family that just announced a new show get the easiest, most versatile dance to work with.
*Guess my musing about Victoria getting spared from quickstep was wrong – will they give her jive, too?
*Only three of these songs strike me as true “guilty pleasures” – the rest seem pretty normal. “Red Right Hand” is the theme from Peaky Blinders, which has earned critical acclaim. I’m having a hard time seeing how that is a “guilty pleasure”…the song is kind of sinister.
*Peta, resist the urge to have Nick channel Hugh Grant in Love, Actually.
*Poor Nikki.
The first thing that came to mind when I saw Drew’s song was Peaky Blinders. I absolutely LOVE that show but I don’t think he can pull off the Tommy Shelby vibe so I’m hoping he chose it for different reasons.
Am I the only one who wishes they’d stop using troupe members during dances?
I’m hoping the C bros and Peta don’t make finals for once hopefully enough people rallied to derail whatever plans tbtb have
I guess some of the people who got samba last week got a break this week. Jazz is by far the most flexible of the dance styles on dwts and usually get 9’s and 10’s. They probably want to help nick out by giving him jazz to help get ahead and keep him around. They aren’t helping Frankie out too much by giving him samba, hopefully he can pull it off. Not sure how victoria’s quickstep will be, it might be a slower quickstep but it will be interesting. Excited to see Lindsey’s jive, it’s the first jive of the season and I think it will be the showstopper of the night. Glad to see charleston in the mix, and happy they gave Jordan a break after some tough dance styles like the samba and tango, and I enjoyed the charleston Lindsay did with Wanya. Also, hope they give Nikki a break, and put her in the latter half of the show, she went second and then first this past week. Vanessa gets lucky again, we’ll see if she is ever given the harder dance styles (samba, quickstep, argentine tango). But the people who do jazz now, can’t do it latter so it will be harder to have a showstopper later in the season.
Basically the three most pimped contestants of the season all got Jazz. The one part NBC family member of the cast got hosed as well. They’ve started to show their cards early this season. They must have been really shocked (spurred into action) by how low the pimped three must have polled in the votes in week one.
Just read that Vanessa will be co-hosting the View, didn’t catch which day. Gets more interesting by the day.
I’m so excited to see Lindsey and Mark do the first jive of the season!! Mark is always so inventive with the jives (Kristi, Katherine, and Paige come to mind) and I hope he blows it away creatively. Its nice they got the arguably best known song when they didn’t both nights last week!!
Yessss to another Lindsay Arnold charleston! Cant wait to see what she can do with Jordan for this one.
Also can’t wait to see how much time-wasting/how little choreography Maks throws into Vanessa’s jazz. My eyes might actually come out of their sockets from how hard I end up rolling them when she inevitably get heaped with praise.
Lindsey and a Mark jive, I see great things!
When I run all the jazz songs through my head all I see is corny not guilty pleasures. All three of the couples are going to be messing about as Len says.
I really like the troupe, all skilled, but I prefer them in bumpers which there isn’t a whole lot of these days.
I’m really forward to Lindsay’s Jive, Jordan’s Charleston and Frankie’s samba, IDK if he’ll be good technically, but after his performance on Monday I cannot wait to watch him again, plus I’m N*SYNC trash lol.
I think Victoria is raking in the votes, so TPTB probably gave her quickstep early so in case she has trouble, they know she’ll be fine.
Does anyone else think Vanessa might be hosting Dancing with the Stars JR? I’ve been trying to figure out why they’re desperately trying to make her happen and that’s all I can come up with.
Anyway, I bet Vanessa goes last on Monday and it’ll be all about redemption for Maks after the trainwerck Jazz he choreographed for Heather last season, and I bet it’ll be the highest scoring of the night. *eyerolls*
I have really come to dislike them using jazz and contemporary in the competition, they’re just excuses to do freestyles, it makes it obvious who they’re trying to tip the scales in favor of.
Looking forward to Vanessa and Maks it was either that song or Spice Girls…not surprised with that song choice.
Mark and Lindsey, Cheryl and Terrell, Derek and Sharna, and Frankie and Witney all have songs and dance styles that Im excited to see.
The others…don’t know how and from where TPTB chose those songs.
Worried they gave Terrell and Cheryl a great/relatively easy dance style as a high-score-parting gift. ???? hope not for Cheryl’s sake.
Or
Another elegant refined dance from Nikki because she’s leaving and want to show she has blossomed into an elegant woman. At least IMO.
Boy are they trying to keep Nick in the competition or what! Can’t seem to keep up with many dances so let’s give him jazz where you almost can’t get lower than a 7 score. So excited to see another Lindsay Charleston, I think we’ll finally see some 9s for Jordan this week. Have to admit though, Derek’s Fresh Prince theme is my favorite choice from all the celebs guilty pleasures! I expect Sharna to have fun creating that one 🙂
I think I’m missing the guilty. Unless maybe it’s songs that are people’s guilty pleasure. I’m totally confused. Hope Jordan and Frankie kill it again. I’m lukewarm on everyone else.
Over the married couple thing. Definitely seems they are underscoring Derek. Seems they may be propping Sasha up and I’m just over all the help. I’d love a season where they the the journey happen naturally. That’s all I’m done.
Just a thought. I am not sure Vanessa having Jazz this week will work so well for her because Maks is not good at jazz choreography. Last season when he was injured and choreographed that awful jazz routine for Heather and Alan she went home. And, regardless of how one might have felt about Heather, she was capable of doing a great jazz routine given her dance training but Maks totally wasted that opportunity. I am not saying Vanessa will do poorly or will go home too. I am only saying this may backfire on them because jazz is not Maks’ strenght.
Jive is one of Mark’s strongest dances as a dancer and choreographer. However, I always worry when he and his partner get jive because, despite being a Mark fan, I must admit that not a lot of his partners ended up (reasonably) mastering the jive technique. The only ones IMO who did were Sabrina, Katherine, and Alexa.
And while jive may suit Lindsey’s personality, she does have those lanky limbs to deal with (and I have seen some comments already from people who think she looks “gangly”).
So, fingers crossed for Lindsey and Mark!
Am I the only disappointed that there is no Gangman style, or minus a couple of songs that anything really screams guilty pleasure.
So not looking forwards to another Maks Jazz. If he can’t cheorograph one for one of the best dancer to ever be on the show then how is he going to do with Vanessa. And this is coming some someone who actually likes her, and is giving her a vote or two every week.
This is not Frankie’s first Latin dance; he did a cha-cha-cha on Tuesday.
Jordan song is from the Incredibles!
Yeah, I’m with everyone else that most of these songs don’t scream “guilty pleasure.” Disappointed with the selection.
I know it doesn’t have rules, but I wonder how much Jazz will help Nick. He’s a stiff guy that doesn’t scream personality. Maks sucks at choreographing Jazz so my expectations will be low for that dance, despite my love for Vanessa.
I’m disappointed with Nikki and Lindsey’s dances for different reasons. Nikki because she needs a big moment IMO and a V. Waltz might not be it. I think Lindsey will kill the Jive, but she’s had three upbeat, fast dances and I really wanted something a little different.
There is also probably a 95% chance Alfonso at least turns up in rehearsal for Derek and Sharna. I know it annoys people how much he’s around, but I actually like his dedication and support for the show- it clearly helped his career.
These guilty pleasures remind me of a meeting we just had at work where we asked the new boss what his guilty pleasure is and he answered Game of Thrones. Then he said he’s not even caught up. What kind of C Bro answer is that?
Even though these guilty pleasures aren’t too guilty I’m looking forward to seeing what the night holds. Especially Derek and Sharna’s “Fresh Prince” cha cha!
I wish Nikki/Artem had rumba. Her guilty pleasure is apparently romance novels so it would have made sense. Their days are definitely numbered and Artem’s rumbas in Strictly are truly beautiful it’s a shame we’ve never seen one from him on this show. But I loved his romance themed tango with Nancy last year so hopefully he’ll come up with something lovely even though the judges won’t appreciate it. I watched some post show interviews and he’s really taken the judges comments and scores to heart. Talked about how bad he felt that he didn’t do right by Nikki, how it reflects on him as a teacher and now self doubt is creeping in. Makes me mad when other male pros are just coasting.
I don’t think it makes a difference how badly Maks choreographs a jazz, they’ll gush over it anyway. Likewise Sasha – didn’t like Gleb’s jazz jive with Jana so I don’t think he’ll come up with anything better.
I’m trying to work out what the guilty pleasures are though. Like with Tubthumping – l love the song and how it’s light and catchy but I think of it as someone who’s off-their-face drunk getting knocked down (probably in a fight), then getting back up again (to keep fighting!) No disrespect to Victoria and the incredible adversities she has overcome but I can just see Val getting heavy handed and turning it into a life lesson for all of us.
Nikki & Artem– I love their song, but they just did a Waltz Monday night….something fishy going on for sure with TPTB!!! but, I think Artem will do her justice with a beautiful Waltz, again.
Victoria & Val– Fast pace song with a few slower breaks. Val’s quicksteps aren’t anything to brag about (Zendaya comes to mind). And, I also wonder if the judges are going to overlook Victoria’s mistakes continually, because they are scoring her higher than others who have done better. The appraisal week after week could backfire. She should be held to the same standard as the others. Not to sound cruel…but Nyle was totally deaf and was held to the same standard.
Derek & Sharna–I think Derek will do a good cha cha to their song. Sharna will come up with a snappy choreography.
Sasha & Gleb– Love this song! Takes me back to my teenage years. 4 Tops were awesome! Gleb will have a lot of breathing room with this dance style & song. No doubt Sasha will be shakin’ it.
Nick & Peta–Can’t wait to see how Nick does with this song & dance. Peta will work it to their advantage, I’m sure.
Jordan & Lindsay–Sorta weird music for a Charleston, but Lindsay will come up with something, since she’s used to choreographing a Charleston.
Drew & Emma– This song sounds more like a “Halloween” theme night type. Len is probably going to have a bird before the night’s over.
Vanessa & Maks– Yes, I see a lot of messing around with this one.
Terrell & Cheryl– I can just see a “saltry” Salsa coming with this dance. I hope the judges have a fan near by to cool them off.
Lindsey & Mark– Can’t wait to see Mark’s creation. They will burn the floor with this one.
Frankie& Witney– I agree that this might be tough for Frankie, but Witney just might come up with something that works for him. He sure shocked me with that Cha Cha Tuesday. He’s in it to win it!
TPTB are hell bent on sucking all the joy out of this show. Regardless of the fact that they have several pros that are as good or better than the
C bros, they continue to fawn all over them. God forbid that Len or anyone else criticize Val or Maks they act like spoiled brats and throw temper tantrums! I guess Val expects us to think he was being noble and defending his partner. Sorry I just see it as him being rude and making excuses for his lazy choreography.
Obviously Victoria is at a disadvantage with Quickstep but rather than stepping up to the plate with good choreography he’ll use her disabilities as an excuse. Sad because Victoria deserves better than that.
Looking forward to seeing Jordan & Lindsay, Lindsey and Mark,
Frankie and Witney, and Drew and Emma
#23 kikki, i watched the interview with Artem and Nikki as well, and i really felt so bad for Artem! He really did looked crushed, and so doubtful of his own abilities. I feel kinda bad for him that he left Strictly, because here in America, this dwts team seems to be totally undermining him and putting him down, either giving him less favourable partners, or completely taking him off the cast in the last minute like in Season 21! Honestly, I don’t get why they treat Artem so dispensable, i wish he stayed with Strictly where i feel he was more valued. Now it’s gotten to a point where he doubts himself and think he’s not doing a good job, doing right by Nikki, heartbreaking to watch. And once again they seem to be gunning for nikki and artem but god knows what reason, perhaps just again that artem is dispensable and needs to go earlier than all the other guys except Keo.
Yer gonna have to spare me on the whole “poor Artem” schtick. He’s gotten partners with fantastic fanbases (which is more than half the battle on this show) and he’s had a few with actual ability. Nikki is a HUGE get for him – she’s young, hot, popular and reasonably talented. Here are his other partners:
– Lea Thompson – star of a couple of iconic movies, came in 6th which is great.
– Patti LaBelle – ICON, not close to the first person out that season.
– Mischa Barton – okay, not a great get.
– Maureen McCormick – star of an iconic TV show with a big fanbase. 8th place.
– Nancy Kerrigan – OLYMPIC SKATER, MEDALIST, like most Olympians a great fanbase and a sympathetic figure. Should have gone farther and might have with a different pro.
– Nikki Bella – great get.
I swear, the fangirl projection of his feelings is getting a bit OTT. On DWTS he can become famous in the US – that gets him more than Strictly does, plus the US pros are paid much better than the UK ones. His partners have not sucked, all have had a shot. Where someone places on the show is the result of a LOT of factors, not the least of which is who else is on the show in addition to that someone. And Artem is not blameless in his partnerships, nor is he a victim.
You all make good points about Maks inability to choreograph a decent jazz. Why I think it is still a win is because there are no rules. He can basically do anything he wants with no penalty. The question is, if its dumb and boring, will they even call him on it?? I am doubtful.
Well, don’t forget – the pimpage of Vanessa might be less about her and more about wanting Maks around longer. Despite the fact that the ratings continue to decrease.
Everytime someone says Artem should have stayed on Strictly I say the same thing… his bank balance would very much disagree with you.
Since the topic of money was brought up, I’ve always wondered how are the pros paid. Do they have a base salary for just being on the show, or is it a weekly thing and only paid for the weeks on before voted off with celeb?
I’ve always assumed all pros get a upfront fee (some get more than others I’m sure aka Maks surely gets far more than Keo), then they get added fees for the longer they stay on, 10k for week 1, 20k for week 3 etc. I’m far from 100% on this, I’m sure Court and Heidi know more, I think they’ve done an article on this in the past.
They get paid per week they are competing. If they get eliminated, they still get paid for pro dances, etc. Of course, Marquee pros like Maks, Mark, Derek all likely get paid a good bit more that the newer folks, including Artem. I think Val likely was in a position to renegotiate a higher salary this past time, just based on how he was talking, but you never know.
I think you met Jazz instead of Jive concerning Maks’ dance.
And, I agree with the fact that Artem has had some decent possibilities with past partners. If Artem wants to stay in the game, he is going to have to get a great deal more creative with his choreography, and not use (copy) from DWTS tour. That didn’t do Nikki any favors. Nikki has the potential to go further if she can relax and feel the music more and work with Artem, especially with trusting him.
Sharna and Derek explained how they chose the Fresh Prince theme song for guilty pleasures week. Derek mentioned that when he was traveling for games he used to watch the show in his hotel room at night and the show became his “guilty pleasure”. Sasha also explained in an insta live with Sharna that her guilty pleasure is baking, which would explain why her song is “Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch.” Thus, for a lot of the celebs the song represents in some way their guilty pleasure.
But neither Fresh Prince nor baking are guilty pleasures that one would have to hide from friends, coworkers, etc. the same that I have to hide my DWTS obsession.
I was expecting Sharna and Derek to get jazz because she mentioned hip hop in relation to their dance for Monday. Maybe she’s intending to incorporate some hip hop steps into the cha cha routine, but seeing how TPTB seem to have an agenda to undermine them at every turn, my guess is that she was told that she could not do a jazz routine and was forced to do a cha cha. The same thing happened last season with her and Bonner for Disney week. They were either going to do jazz or contemporary depending upon whether they did Wreck-It-Ralph or The Little Mermaid, and then they ended up doing a tango to the song from Wreck-It-Ralph.
@Nukegrrrl – Yeah, I agree with you about the celebs’ definition of guilty pleasure. I would consider baking a guilty pleasure only if you bake with the intent of eating all or most of what you bake. If you bake with the intent of offering it to others, then you’re just being a nice person.
@irishandlilies I agree, I thought that Sharna would go for a jazz routine when I heard their theme was going to be fresh prince, but looks like there are already 3 couples doing jazz, so I can see why they went a different route. When Sharna talked about hip hop she said in her ig live that she was going to try and make it as hip hop yet traditional cha cha she can, which means she wants to capture the hip hop part the actual theme but make sure the cha cha steps are there to please the judges. This made me think of her cha cha with Nick Carter where she gave it a little hip hop modern feel, but still embraced the cha cha, little bit like Frankie’s cha cha Tuesday. I think she’ll figure it out, she’s a great choreographer.
Not feeling the Artem sympathy, either, and I like him a lot. But I’m amazed he wasn’t lobbying TPTB for a different dance style as soon as he got the assignment. Other couples in other seasons have been given both waltz styles, but not in successive weeks. I know it’s rare for a piece of music or dance style to be changed, but TPTB could have hardly disputed that so early in the season there are plenty of other dance styles that could be assigned instead of going back to back with two waltzes.
re: Vanessa and Girls Just Want to Have Fun–incredibly lucky break, right in her personality wheelhouse.
re: Maks and Jazz–Maks…jazz…YIKES!
Victoria and the quickstep–if she does have problems it’s going to be interesting to see how the judges score her. I hope she’ll succeed, because I always hope that for the stars, but also because I hate the controversy.
I like the troupe. It gives me an idea of the skills of the pro’s choreography. Some do a great job, while others use them to take up time. I can’t think of a time they distracted me. I think Derek H., Lindsey, Whitney and Sharna are the best in using the troupe. There are some dances that require the whole floor (waltz, etc.), and the troupe would not be helpful. When they use the troupe, I get the feeling they are trusting their partners more, not less.
Baking might be a guilty pleasure for someone like Sasha who suffers from PCOS. We’ll see how they work it into her storyline.
@Gunny – I like the troupe as well. Sometimes they are needed to highlight the story of the song or dance routine.
Same here, every time I here a Chmerkovskiy got a Jazz routine, all I can think about was Laurie and Heather. Two good dancers saddle with the most boring Jazz routines possible. One was just spinning with a little Jazz thrown in and the other was posing on a bench with little dancing. Made me question why I still watch the show but *sigh* we can only hope Maks learned from last season about doing an actual jazz routine and not padding the runtime with posing or spinning.
Guilty pleasures seems vague as a theme night, but it could be fun. When they did it season 15, it was kind of lame, but I expect some standouts.
I get the feeling Nikki and Artem are going a very sexy route this week, which may make their dance more memorable than their others (which were also pretty sexy) since throughout the week, the DWTS insta has only been showing clips of their practices and also from Artem’s recent post of him and Nikki, I imagine the dance’ll be along the same strand as Jana and Gleb’s wet argentine tango. It’ll definitely be dramatic, but I’m worried it’ll be Nikki’s ‘going out with a bang’ dance, though a difference dance style might fit the theme better.
I think that Victoria won’t be getting a lot of critiques on her legs; the judges will probably just praise her spirit, especially with the context of the song.
I’m looking forward to Sharna’s choreo for the theme, and I hope this is Derek’s breakthrough week with scores. I really want to see him sticking around for a few more weeks.
I saw on Sasha’s story that there’s some dancing with the troupe girls at the start. It looks like a fun dance, and I’d rather her stick around than Nick or TO, so I hope she does well.
On a sidenote, I saw Jenna in Sasha’s story, so I’m wondering what she’s role she’ll play this season. They definitely make a bigger deal about her than any other troupe member.
I don’t care much for Nick, but jazz will basically be an excuse to give him pretty good scores.
I love superhero themed anything, and I’m definitely looking forward to see Lindsay shake it up a little with the choreo and the theme, especially since the costuming of her last three dances has been pretty much the same neutral colors. I get the feeling Jordan will kill this Charleston, regardless of what Lindsay throws at him, but I’m worried that his narrative is kind of one note. All of his packages have been basically the same for 3 episodes, and I just want to see him struggle a little.
Super excited to see Drew do the argentine tango and curious about what lifts he’ll be able to manage. He embraces everything, so this song and theme will definitely be fun and memorable. Also can’t wait to see Emma do her take with the song.
Vanessa gets both a popular song and a breezy dance style. Unless Maks really screws up, it’ll be hard for this to look bad.
TO has been a little disappointing, but I am keeping an open mind. Maybe this dance will change my views on him (or maybe not.)
Lindsey, Mark, and the jive seems like a perfect combo, so I would love to see 9s or maybe 10s for this dance. It might seem a little early in the season, but it is their 4th dance already. I eagerly anticipate some crazy Mark antics.
Frankie is definitely a hard worker and a strong competitor. I don’t know if his samba will be as great as Jordan’s was last week, but he won’t disappoint. Witney and him are for sure my biggest surprise this season.
Saw a quick snippet on DWTS instagram story of Vanessa’s dance for tomorrow. Once again for the 4th dance in a row, looking very troupe heavy. I wish there was rules or a limit in place how many times in a row they can utilize the dancers in a season.
I’m looking forward to seeing Lindsey & Mark and Frankie & Witney’s dances this week. But I do hope to see great things for Lindsey & Mark b/c that’s the couple I’m rooting for this season. I would be quite pleased If no C-Bro or Peta made it through to the FINALS.
Same for me, John. Looking forward to L & M and F & W’s dances. Also, agree with your last sentence of no C’s or Peta in the finals. But, something tells me one of them will be in the final 3, because of the judges (mainly CAI) over-wellness with no criticism.
First thing I watched Saturday morning was rehearsal video of Lindsey and Mark playing Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” on their violin and guitar.
It was an amazing way to start my weekend and I hope their guilty pleasures performance tonight is rife with that same energy. It makes me want to wear a shirt that says “Choose Dance.”
I think some manipulations have already begun with the dancing orders given to some the past couple dances. I know Nikki went 1st last T, but that didn’t go well for her, now 5th, and I think last M she was what like 3rd?
Per George P. Twitter:
Drew, Derek, Victoria, Vanessa, Nikki, Frankie, Lindsey, Sasha, Nick, Terrell, Jordan. Begins 5 min. late!
Seriously, Sasha, Nick, and Terrell all in a row. Looks like I will have a big chunk of free time before Jordan takes the stage.
Hmmm, I wonder if it means Nikki is safe, giving her another bad spot, and TO or Nick going home on a high…
