Make Your Wish List For The Dancing With The Stars Sports Edition
As you might know from a previous report, there is a Dancing With The Stars Sports Edition planned for the Spring of 2018. So, what is your Wish List for it? Let us know in comments.
I’m hoping it’s the 10 sports Champions who have won in the past like TV Line suggested. If not, here are a couple of my wishes….
Johnny Weir (or any ice skater for that matter)
Scottie Pippen
Dennis Rodman (lol)
Any football player (but, not anyone who has given the knee during the anthem! 🙄 )
Dale Earnhart Jr.
Chris Evert
Jimmy Conners
Maria Sharapova
Julia Lipnitskaya!! <3
Definitely!!
i would love Johnny but he has said on his podcast that he and tara (lipinski) would only do it if they could partner together!!! he would be spectacular for sure
I believe I’ve mentioned here in the past that a long-time dream team of mine is Michelle Kwan with Mark. Although I’d prefer to see her growth over a regular season, if a shorter season works better with her schedule, I’ll gladly take it. February 2018 marks 20 years since she took the Silver at the Nagano Olympics.
My favorite sport celebs would be:
1) Kobe Bryant
2) Shaq O’Neal
3) Dale Earnhardt
4) Michelle Kwan
5) A-Rod
6) Ronda Rousey
7) Lindsey Vonn
8) Michael Phelps
9) Danica Patrick
10)Serena Williams
Would love ANY skater they can get. Honestly except for the Olympics I don’t really watch a lot of sports. I am fine with whomever else they cast with a few exceptions which have already been noted here and in other wish and watch lists over the years.
Lindsay Vonn Olympic skier, tall dancer with Keo
Danica Patrick now retired Indy driver with Allan
Gabby Douglas Olympic gymnast needs some rehab with Sasha
Michelle Kwan Olympian just please! with Artem
Ronda Rousey Olympian she is in acting and producing now.. with Mark
Victor Cruz – I hope he takes the knee! Football free agent and Salsa endzone dancer with Lindsay
Derek Jeter– Baseball now retired and loves to dance – with Sharna
Greg Louganis– Olympic Diver – retired and loves dance – with Emma
Steve Nash –retired Basketball player, one of the short ones at 6′ 3″ but still a legend with Cheryl
Jordan Speith – Golf phenom still only 24 with Witney.
I love your list! Would love to see Johnny Weir, and Tara, too. Michelle Kwan. Considering what NBC was willing to pay her just to sit in the broadcast booth (which she declined) after she had to withdraw from the 2006 Olympics, she could bring in viewers. The most beloved figure skater ever.
I’ve always wanted to see Venus Williams on DWTS. The women’s tennis season is 10+ months long, probably why we’ve only seen retired players on the show, but Venus has been playing a reduced schedule. Just the slams and the premier mandatories, plus a few others, so maybe she’d be available for four weeks, depending on where it falls on the calendar?
A couple of my choices:
Michelle Kwan
Russell Wilson ( yes, I’m a Seahawk fan????????????)
Richard Sherman ( probably can’t because of injury????????????????)
Mckayla Maroney
Joe Montana ( I still believe he’s the best ever)
Sarah Hughes
I posted this on Vogue’s other post but my dreams are:
1.) Ekaterina Gordeeva
2,) Scott Hamilton
But I’d also love:
– Brian Boitano
– Michelle Kwan
– Johnny Weir
– Greg Louganis
– Serena Williams
– Derek Jeter
Make it happen producers!!
I reckon Sharapova’s a very good bet to be on. Fits the niche of what DWTS looks far in a cast member, someone trying to fix their reputation. Surely they’ll get at least one footballer. The way the Eagles are going we could be seeing someone like Carson Wentz. Danica Patrick will surely be asked, I have no doubt she’s been asked before as well. As usual my two dream picks are Landon Donovan and Andy Roddick. Both retired sports legends and both would kill it despite having zero dance experience.
I went with American but adding a vote for Tessa Virtue and Artem!
Would really like to see:
Scottie Pippin- but he needs a very tall partner
Michelle Kwan- would love to see her do ballroom with Derek but that won’t happen, so second choice is Artem
Derek Jeter with ???
McKayla Maroney-
Ekaterina Gordeeva- she would be so lovely
Paul Wylie or Scott Hamilton
Robbie Gould- football kicker
If hockey is a possibility- Patrick Kane
Someone from the Chicago Bears SuperBowl Shuffle team- Willie Gault- he can dance!
I for one would love to see Colin Kapernick or any football player brave enough to take a knee against police brutality and our incredibly racist justic system. I would love for an important message such as protesting discrimination to be highlighted on prime time ABC to an audience that most likely has opposing viewpoints. After the likes of Paula Deen, Bristol Palin, Rick Perry, and Geraldo Rivera, I’m pretty sure ABC could take on some more liberal viewpoints.
I’m always gonna say shaq. Even though He’s a giant lol. Also Becky hammon who retired from the WNBA
Gina Rodriguez
Any football player, especially if they have the knee during the anthem.
Ha! Ayana – I just made an identical comment on the other post.
Really tired of the nonsensical, racist witch hunt re: Colin Kapernick. Of all the shit that goes on in this country THAT is what you want to be upset about??
I’d like to see Tom Brady. I hear he’s a pretty bad dancer, but with his work ethic it would be fun to see if he improves. Also, since DWTS is kind of known for jumpstarting or restarting careers, I wonder if Tiger Woods is on their radar? He could sure use a reset.
Only one wish: Peyton Manning! He’s older and would probably be stiff as a board but he’s so funny. I’d love to see him deal with being covered in sparkles. Wouldn’t seriously wish him on any of the ladies though, I’ve been rooting hard for them to get more wins!
@Ayana They’ve had Tucker Carlson on the show too.
so many to choose from:
Sasha Cohen
Shaun White
Ashton Eaton
Tony Romo
Lance Armstrong
Nadia Comaneci
Shani Davis
Danica Patrick
Kerri Walsh-Jennings
Greg Louganis
Bubba Watson
Carli Lloyd or Alex Morgan
I would prefer they bring back the sports winners. It seems as if it took them a few weeks to get past 6’s, so low expectations for great dances. It might turn out to be a fanbase win for either the athlete or the pro. They could choose just athletes from the Winter Olympics.
I don’t remember why Tucker is controversial…I thought he was just an asshole. 😉 Refresh my memory, please.
:::sigh::: I would LOVE for Peyton to be on the show. Courtney and I might be on the same team then, since he’s a Tennessee guy AND a former colt. 🙂
You’re right Heidi, I’ll be nice! I’m just boggled at the idea of anyone being against government protected free speech that hurts nobody, and against someone taking a stand for what they believe in.
People see the football protest differently….and there are different sides depending on how you see it. I see it as a knock against our country and our freedoms. Then again…. I’m old school since our teachers taught us to stand for the anthem and flag every day in school from little on. I remember coloring the flag and talking about what it meant and all the reasons why we loved our country, all the people in it of every race, etc etc. So, when someone kneels, I see it as a knock on those freedoms and the beauty of our people (all colors and from everywhere around the world) and country….and a knock at our military too. Sure, I’m all for the freedom to protest and to have your opinion, but, why not do it on their own time? Alienating the football base and thousands of fans by taking the kneel during the game is ruining football for half the fans. But, hey, if they don’t want good ratings, or want half the fans to come anymore, and not consider how everyone feels, that’s their problem I guess. But, I hope that never happens on DWTS.
Anyway, that’s what I see when they kneel. I assure you I am not a racist of any kind and nor am I against free speech, etc, just because I don’t approve of this behavior during a game (especially when our taxes pay for the stadiums, etc too). I’d feel the same no matter what color of person took the kneel.
Their ratings are fine – people claiming to not watch will always go back to watching and if they don’t? Their loss. As for “doing it on their own time” – if we’re going to go that route, then why don’t they take the military, flag presentations, fly overs and all that stuff out of “the game” as well. That wasn’t always included – it was added years ago as a recruiting tool for the military. I will also ask you…if you are watching the game at home, do you stand with your hand over your heart when the anthem is playing?? 99% of people DON’T, yet the anthem is playing and the flag is being presented. So….
EVERYONE is racist to some degree against someone. Every person in this country. If you go to the Holocaust museum in Los Angeles (I think it was LA – I’ve been to several) the first thing they do is ask you to pick a door to go through: the one labeled something like “discrimination” or non-discriminatory (can’t remember the exact words they used). My friend and I picked the discrimination door, while the other people in our group picked the other door. The other door was locked. The guide asked us why we chose the door we did and we said because everyone discriminates against *someone*. And the guide was like “exactly”. It was a very good lesson.
Me too, Anna. But they have no problem with a president that got 3 or 5 deferments to avoid serving this country and they themselves haven’t served – yet Colin taking a knee is horrendous.
Most military people who fought for those freedoms, that I have seen, have said Colin is entitled to do what he’s doing – that’s the whole point of why they fight for it.
Thanks for telling us about the door in the Holocaust Museum, Heidi. Fascinating. I’d love to see that.
Anyway, I don’t feel I and others are being racist just because of how we feel on the kneel at a football game. I’d feel the same on it no matter what color a person was who would take the knee. But you have a point on the jets, etc. I’ve always thought they were cool. Then again, I’ve never thought and still don’t look at jets, the flag, or the anthem in a political way like many do now days. I’ve just always thought of those things (jets, the flag, etc) in a more general or bigger way as part of our country, the beauty, and everything about it….bad and good. I don’t know, but, that’s the way I was raised on it.
Anyway, I change my mind…bring on Colin if some of you want him lol (and Tim Tebow and Peyton, etc too). In the end, all I really care about is dancing.
Unpopular opinion but I’d like a break from football players. I usually enjoy them but I’d love to see more athletes from sports that aren’t represented on the show as often. But if they are going to have one I’d be down for Colin.
I’d also like to see some 2018 Olympians, preferably from sports other than figure-skating just so I don’t have to hear the ringer talk about them. Maybe some skiers or snowboarders? I’m sure they’ll get whoever makes headlines during the Games.
Another UFC fighter would also be wish of mine.
And my pie-in-the-sky dream for this season would be to have Serena Williams on!
Mark Mcgwire
Dennis Rodman
TJ Lavin
Ryan Sheckler
Joe Theismann
Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Mckayla Maroney
Billie Jean King
Anna Kournikova
Lindsey Vonn
Mia Hamm
Ronda Rousey
You know, Julia, it occurred to me that MAYBE the whole point of doing an “athletes only” version of DWTS was that they had somehow lined up (or wanted to line up) ALL OLYMPIC athletes from the 2018 games. Now that? Would be cool.
Male Athletes
Kobe Bryant
Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Michael Phelps
Aaron Rodgers
Derek Jeter
Female Athletes
Allyson Felix
Kerri Walsh Jennings
Ronda Rousey
Mia Hamm
Gabby Douglas
I need to comment om the “kneeling” during the national anthem. I appreciate all the dialogue above. I appreciate the right to voice your opinion, but I hate this method for accomplishing it. The anthem you show disrespect for is for the same country, and in front of the sports fans that made you athletes millionaires. I think you could find a better way to express yourself. After all, you received a free college education from your sports scholarship. Use it…and a bit of common sense, too.
Princess Heidi, I’ve also been hoping that there’s more to this than we know yet. Even with only athletes, 4 weeks is very short. I get all of the reasons that it looked appealing from a business standpoint, SCHEDULE, a breath of novelty to an old but still successful franchise, possibly being able to catch some “stars” that would ordinarily decline the regular length season. And I well remember all of the discussions here about the advantages athletes have in being in condition and accepting coaching. But all I want to know about is-
Will this be entertaining and satisfying for me as a viewer. And I’m skeptical. 3 weeks and it the finals! How polished will they become? Only our creative female pros, IMO, will be able to come up with freestyles worthy of the name after training their partners so little. What dances will be chosen? As I run the numbers, every week would have to be a double elimination. No room to recover from a poor performance. And will I come to care about these contestants/teams? Casting from the 2018 Winter Olympics would solve a couple of these issues. And enable the producers to cast at least a couple of ringers. But what I it all really comes down to, they had a 4 week hole in the schedule to fill and it’s not really that well planned?
Long time I’ve commented on this site but to all people saying there is a better solution than kneeling during the anthem, we are open to your suggestions ? Because people have been protesting in the streets asking for justice, wrote to the dirigents, created songs about it and nothing is changing. With Colin kneeling legally and peacefully during the anthem, police brutality has been brought to every media all around the world. So it did work and he is serving american society by fighting quietly to protect USA citizens.
Heidi – excellent point about the fans at home not standing with their hand over their heart during the anthem. Does it only count if you’re there in person? To me, kneeling during the anthem seems like a pretty quiet and peaceful (and yet attention getting) form of protest. It’s not like he’s going around burning flags or something, right?
Before things start going in a bad direction with the kneeling debate, is it possible we could get back to DWTS and the Wish list now? Philomene and Anna, do you have some athlete suggestions for the new DWTS season? Thanks to all who have posted their wish lists so far.
Julia, I love the Winter Olympians idea.
Colleen, I’m wondering how they will do this in such a short time too. I hope we hear more soon.
Good points, Philomene and Anna.
Come on, Joanne, let’s not act like the athletes are the only ones getting something out of this bargain – that’s just small and thoughtless. College sports are a HUGE money maker for the schools – these schools earn millions upon millions on the backs of unpaid athletes. Yes, they get free college out of it, but you’re talking less than a 100k (at the most) versus tens of millions every single year.
As for professional football? That is a HUGE money making scheme and the fans are willing victims. Not sure why some football fans act like he shot them or ruined their day. Colin peacefully protested, hurting NO ONE and is out of a job…yet he has already given 800k to various charities with a goal to reach a million. And THIS is the guy you’re butt hurt about?? There are plenty of football players that do stupid, ignorant shit, but this guy ain’t one of them. But he’s paying for peacefully protesting police brutality, without complaining. He’s more a patriot that most around here.
Ok so my wish list is complete (the ones I want to see on the show the most are at the top of the list):
Tony Hawk
Nico Hernández
Claressa Shields
Rhonda Rousey
T.J. Lavin
Shaq
Brita Sigourney
Daryl Homer
Nick Goepper
Dale Earnhart Jr.
Chris Evert
Jimmy Conners
Maria Sharapova
Dan Marino
Michael Jordan
Scotty Cranmer
Aaron Blunck
Noah Bowman
Jorge Posada
Tim Tebow
I don’t know too many sports icons by name, but here’s two I know of and they’re brother and sister… I don’t think a brother and sister have done the show at the same time, so I think it would be cool! Anyway the siblings are the McMahon’s, Stephanie and Shane.
@PH-sorry for the wait. Tucker, like Geraldo, is a commentator at Fox News, with some major right-wing views that just rub people the wrong way. But yeah, you’re right, he is an ass.
How about some former NHL players Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr,Phil Esposito , Mark Messier any LA King alumni. How about trying some of the other California based teams both present and past teams. Your first attempt ( SEAN AVERY) was not one of your more stellar choices given his rather tarnished reputation.
@Dave McFadden Like Dionne? Or Robitaille?
Bubba Watson!!
also Shaun White and Gus Kenworthy would be perfecttttt
Some great ideas folks are listing! Nick’s suggestion of the McMahon siblings made me think of Mick Foley (WWE’s Mankind) – he would be great on DWTS! Could Socko be his trio partner?
The rest of my All-Stars wishlist so far:
Colin Kaepernick (unsigned NFL starter)
Sue Bird (WNBA All-Star),
Leticia Bufoni (world skateboard champ).
Thanks for your picks, Everyone, and keep them coming when you think of more. Hey,…and check out this interview with Gleb if you haven’t yet, he talks a little on the mini season in it. He doesn’t know or say much on it, but, he mentioned it might take place for 4 to 6 weeks: https://www.puredwts.com/2017/12/08/dancing-with-the-stars-sasha-farber-and-emma-slater-push-back-wedding-2-2-2/
I’d like to see Misty May-Treanor on the show, because I thought she was on the right trajectory when she got injured during the season she was on, and I’d like to see what she’d do if she had a second chance.
Other choices:
Johnny Weir
Michelle Kwan
Scott Hamilton
Paul Wylie
Tracy Austin
Greg Louganis (please!)
Laura Wilkinson
Troy Dumais
Janet Evans
Simone Manuel (She’s probably training, though.)
My personal feelings are that I hope it’s new people- not a huge fan of another version of All-Stars. I would also like to see some sports represented that we haven’t seen in the past.
Some personal picks:
1. Michelle Kwan- top of my list for years
2. Shaun White
3. Tony Romo- never followed his football career, but he is freaking hilarious as a commentator.
4. Literally any male gymnast
5. Ibtihaj Muhammad- I’m not sure if she would or could, but I’d love to see the diversity
2018 Olympic athletes sounds awesome, Heidi, but I’d be surprised if they could get clearance to do the show so close to the games with the risk of being injured, etc.
Posted too soon: I would also LOVE to see Colin Kaepernick or Michael Bennett do the show, but I worry that about the absolute hate they would get from the conservative audience (I have a lot of feeling on this, but safe to say I’m disgusted by the backlash these players are getting.) It’s a shame, because Colin would be perfect for the show and I think if people actually knew what he was about and what he’s done for his community, it could change some minds.
Colin just won the Sports Illustrated Muhammad Ali Legendary Award. When Laila Ali was on the show it was a complete privilege to have her Dad in the audience. But during the height of what should have been the best years of his career he was barred from it, just as Colin is today. Rather than just being provocative, it would do ABC well to do something courageous.
Clara Hughes. She is amazing and so inspiring.
Canadian Olympic cyclist and speed skater – one of only five people to medal in both the summer & winter Olympics and is the only person ever to have won multiple medals in both.
She is also involved with Right To Play and a huge advocate for removing stigma involved with mental health issues.
I don’t usually like the casting of pairs (couples, athletes etc.) to compete against each other but I would love certain people to be on at the same time from the same era as long as it’s just them as individuals not a producer drive rivalry. Connors, McEnroe, Evert, Navratilova, Nadia Comaneci, Mary Lou Retton, Elway and Aikman. I’m sure there’s younger ones too but I’m old so I can’t think of them right now.
Ditto on the Michael Bennett suggestion, Chayse, but I think his injury that sidelined him this season when he was so desperately needed would also prevent any DWTS participation. And if he weren’t injured late in Spring, then Bennett would be in training camp in Renton.
Another popular Seahawks that is very much available these days, and “plays well in Peoria,” is Steve Largent. He has the sports + conservative politics + retro/80’s formulas all in the bag. He’s a DWTS triple threat!
Kym Johnson is pregnant!!!! So happy for her and Robert. It’s on her instagram and People and US Weekly. I know it has nothing to do with this thread but I’ve always adored her and was so happy she found her husband later in life and now gets to be a Mom. I love when good things happen for good people.
Later in life?? She’s barely into her 40’s!!
Isn’t the Olympics over well before DWTS Sports?? I thought they were going on in February.
Having a baby in your 40’s isn’t easy, by nature. As far as getting married for the first time, again I’m an older generation, we always felt and has proven true for my group of female friends, that our prospects decreased as we got older since most of us expected to get married and have children before the age of 40 since it is more difficult the older you get. At least that’s been the experience of many in my age group. Your eggs start to die off fairly quickly after the age of 35. I’m just happy they found each other and she gets to be a Mom to top it off.
Uhh Maria, next time you have news (and you don’t see it posted yet), can you please use our contact us link instead of changing the subject in comments in other posts? There is a new post on Kym if you’d like to comment there. Thanks.
I’ve always hoped for more Baseball players on DWTS. I know they’d have to be retired, since the Fall & Spring DWTS seasons both overlap the MLB season. Too many to name, but there’s got to be someone out there who is truly retired from the sport (not continuing as a coach, manager or broadcaster, as so many tend to do) who wants to dance. Also, we’ve never had a pro golfer, but I’d like to see someone other than Tiger Woods.
That wasn’t the comment, Maria. You said “later in life” – Kym is hopefully only to the halfway point. If you meant she’s on the older side for child bearing, perhaps you should have said that.
Yes Voguerista, sorry!
PH, Yes that is what I meant by later in life, in bearing children. I didn’t make that clear. Apologies.

Hmm… wonder how far they’d stretch the meaning of “athlete” this season. If it’s gonna get kinda outrageous and ridiculous with what “athlete” means I wouldn’t mind seeing another youtuber, maybe a fitness personality or someone who does extreme sports for a living. Hmm… actually if it would be stretched to that degree I wouldn’t mind seeing a dancer on there, but not a Heather Morris backup dancer. Maybe an actor/dancer From the step up franchise like “Moose”! That’d be pretty cool!
Another thought, they use the six week trial for the mini season, are successful, and we get a six week seasons twice a year and a full season. Craziest idea I had about why they’d do that. When would they have the time for this hypothetical second mini season- summer! You could get some very interesting selections for contestants for a summer season, have it after the first week of June and bam, three series of dancing per year. Weird idea, and maybe its a bit too crazy, but it totally makes one think. What are they doing? And @Vogue, just curious, but I would imagine no word on dwts Jr. yet, especially with the mini athlete season in play. Also Merry Christmas to you and the Puredwts ladies, and John. ????
I see this mini-season ending up being an epic fail. I hope ABC really thinks rebooting American Idol is a good idea. And Katy Perry is worth all that money she’s getting paid. I don’t. The Voice is FAR superior!
Anyhow, I’d like to see Kobe Bryant, Michelle Kwan, Tim Tebow, Gabby Douglas, Baker Mayfield(College football player–won the Heisman). Ronda Rousey (cuz why not). And Brooks Laich–Julianne’s husband. His NHL career is over now.
Do TPTB think that athletes will be able to pick up dancing faster than say an actress? Case in point, Lolo Jones. Keshawn Johnson.
For me personally, I would much prefer the show would follow SCD and have one season per year. This gives the pros some much needed downtime to rest their bodies and recharge their creative juice box.
Unfortunately the networks see a hit and milk it to death. It leads to viewer fatigue, especially with all the amazing shows (The Crown, Futureman, The Handmaid’s Tale) that are available for binge viewing.
The television landscape has evolved so much since the first few seasons of DWTS that it’s almost unrecognizable.
I do still feel that there’s a place for DWTS, I’m just not sure a spring mini season is the way to go.
Having said all that that, I would drool over having an Indy car legend cast such as Arie Luyendyk or his VERY easy on the eyes spawn, Arie Luyendyk Jr.
Or maybe James wBlake from the tennis world or the sublime and ethereal Michelle Kwan.
Or what the hell, Tonya Harding would be so amazingly entertaining. The show could capitalize on the buzz from the movie, I Tonya, and give DWTS major publicity, excitement and current buzz.
Derek hough and Michelle Kwan. Mark ballas and Michelle Kwan Derek and. Sweirnia Williams the tennis player sharna and tiger woods Derek. And Gracie gold.
Emma and. Wayne zaytkitc a hockey player Whitney and Steve Lopez Keo and Toyna Harding Atrem and Mary lee reton Shasha and. Calrla Hughes a ice skating champion. Lindsay and James w Blake
