PureDWTS Junior, Season 1 – What We Know So Far, A Few Updates

Well shucks – I tweet about not hearing anything about DWTSJ, and suddenly they start confirming stuff the next day. As luck would have it, I actually did get to talk to Deep Throat a bit last night and this morning, and did manage to dig up a few more of the particulars. I will maintain this post with any other facts that come to light between now and the unofficial “preseason” (the pro and cast announcements, etc), so save it to your bookmarks 😉

Confirmed facts (either by media or our own sources – newest updates in red):

1.) It’s airing on Sundays from 8-9 PM. Confirmed on Twitter by Kristyn, as it’s listed in the ABC schedule; I generally think this is a good time slot, as the show won’t be in direct competition with AGT, SYTYCD, or WOD (which was my concern when I had initially heard it was to be a summer series). It might run into some competition once some of the regular season Sunday night heavy-hitters (The Walking Dead comes to mind) start back up, but for the most part, I don’t think it’s a doomed time slot.

2.) It will tape from July-August.

Given that they’re going to be dealing with a cast that’s under the age of 18, this will probably help get around some of the child labor laws, as well as keep production costs down.

3.) There will be 10 episodes total – some will be live, some will likely be ALL pre-taped.

See above about taping schedule.  My guess is that the finale will likely be live, but everything else will be pre-taped. Entire show will be pre-taped, per source.  Good luck keeping those leaks plugged, ABC 😉

4.) There will be 8-10 couples.

Which makes sense, if the show is to be 10 episodes long.  I think any more than 10 couples would be overkill, for a preliminary season of a new format.

5.) Age cutoff is (roughly) 13.

Source said most of the pros that tried out were 13 and under – a scant few 14 y/o’s did get to audition, but no clue whether they were actually cast or not.

6.) Some of the regular DWTS pros will be serving as mentors.

We had already kinda guessed this, since Sasha & Emma were at the pro auditions, but nice to have confirmation. No idea which pros will for sure be mentoring, but I would venture a guess that Sasha & Emma are indeed involved in some capacity.

7.) Pros have been cast, but they’re still working on the celebs.

And they’ve got time, given that the show isn’t taping until July.  Makes me wonder how they’re going to keep the cast from leaking like a sieve…or maybe that’s their intention…?

8.) Tom is NOT hosting.

Already confirmed awhile back, but just reiterating for the sake of being thorough.

9.) It will not affect the fall season of DWTS in any way.

The fall season will be full-length, airing on Mondays, business as usual.  DWTSJ will be pre-taped, so any pros doing mentoring will not have any overlap with their regular pro duties. I’m guessing DWTSJ is going to air semi-concurrently with the fall season, with DWTSJ on Sunday nights and DWTS on Mondays.

10.) There will be all-new judges as well.

And they’re going to skew much younger than the judging panel on DWTS.

11.) At least one MBT-holder is going to be serving as a judge or host.

This DWTS champion has some dance credibility, and is articulate…so I’m happy with the casting 🙂

Speculation/guesses/stuff we can’t reveal yet:

We’ve been told a few of the pros names. We will reveal when we can, but if you go have a look at the post we did on the DWTSJ pro auditions, you can probably guess at least one of them – hint: I got at least one of the pros on my wish list 😉

Bindi’s brother, Robert Irwin, may be one of the celebs. His was a name a lot of the fans started tossing around when DWTSJ first got announced, and he has been spotted in the audience this season. I would not be mad if he was cast 🙂

Is Bindi possibly hosting…? This might be more within the realm of “wishful thinking”, but she did hop in and give Tom a quick assist last week, and is articulate and friendly enough that I think she’d handle talking to the kids beautifully.

The only child celeb that has publicly expressed interest is Alabama Barker. Read the original post here.

PureDWTS Season 26, Week 3 – Power Rankings

In light of the fact that I’m now writing my last power rankings of the season (I think…admittedly, I haven’t been paying close attention to the schedule) and it’s only week 3, safe to say this abbreviated season has been very, very weird. I generally find myself (and the fans that follow me on Twitter) not as invested as I would be on a full 10-week season, and I think I really and truly don’t have any investment in one couple winning over another.  All the pros left have never won before – so we will have a new pro champion, regardless; and that’s really enough for me, since I think their respective celebs have all had very satisfying, fulfilling journeys on the show this season. I’m actually finding myself more and more pumped to get started on DWTS Junior – more on that in the coming weeks 😉

So this week, Grandpa was back as a judge, and while I don’t think he was necessarily as helpful as Shad when it came to judging, I’m glad he was there to be the “nice” judge, and occasionally throw an optimistic bone to the couples that maybe didn’t do so hot (as evidenced by his tendency to dissent on the ballroom battles – bless him). I’ve heard a few people throwing shade in Grandpa & Shad’s direction, claiming that they “weren’t qualified” to judge, and at this point I have to ask “Have you guys actually been watching the show? And comprehending what’s been going on?” Nearly none of the guest judges are “qualified” in the same sense that the Three Stooges are – and for that, I’m glad.  I don’t need another Len getting grumpy about content, or another Carrie Ann incoherently babbling about non-existent lifts, or another Bruno flamboyantly gushing about whatever it is he gushes about – anymore, it’s kind of nice to have someone on the panel that can look at a dance from a non-technical perspective and say “Y’know what? That may not have been technically perfect, but I enjoyed it!” And really, the extra points dump from a 4th judge only makes the margins closer, so it basically gives more power to the viewer vote.  So if you’re bitching & moaning about unqualified judges at this point – you’re out of your element, Donnie.

We also got some pseudo-quasi mentoring from returning celebs Meryl, Nastia, & Von – and in the case of the latter, I’m thinking this was probably all thrown together fairly last-minute, as Von couldn’t even be present to actually mentor his couples in person, and did his mentoring via Skype.  Have to wonder if they had another returning celeb lined up, and they had to cancel at the last minute, necessitating the scramble for another and Von maybe just happened to be (semi)available. The bumpers we got from these returning celebs ranged from rather marginal (Von) to “Ok, but was that the best choreo you could give her?” (Meryl) and “Actually pretty decent, but man was the camera work terrible!” (Nastia), and seemed like a bit of an afterthought overall. I have a love-hate relationship with the random ways they try to bring back former contestants, as it’s usually pretty flimsy, but in the same token, I do love seeing (some) alums of the show back in the ballroom.

Not a whole lot else to add – seems like the writing is on the wall with this one.  Shall we? Read more..

DWTS Season 26 Week Three Scores, Post Dance Interviews, And More

What another super night of dancing. I think the right three made the finals, but, I really hope they don’t do a short season like this again. Eliminating two and three couples a week is just awful for this show. If they want it to doom, they are on the right path. With that said, I think the right three are in the finals. I’m really enjoying them for all different reasons.

So, let’s review the scores….

Mirai & Alan 35 (9, 9, 8, 9) Eliminated
Jennie & Keo 29 (7, 8, 7, 7) Eliminated
Chris & Witney 33 (8, 9, 7, 9) Eliminated
Tonya & Sasha 33 (8, 9, 8, 8)
Adam & Jenna 39 (10, 10, 9, 10)
Josh & Sharna 36 (9, 9, 9, 9)

Tonya & Sasha Tonya, Jennie, Tonya, Tonya Jennie (60%) Winner
Adam & Jenna Adam, Mirai, Mirai, Adam Adam (64%)
Josh & Sharna Chris, Josh, Josh, Josh Chris (55%)
