Report On Old Pros Returning For Possible Last Dancing With The Stars Season, Who Would You Like To See Come Back?
US Magazine has an article up on the Fall Season of Dancing With The Stars. Supposedly, they talked to a “source” who mentions this could be the “last” season of Dancing With The Stars and if it is, they want to make it the greatest by bringing back “old pros”. This is music to my ears. I would love to see Karina Smirnoff, Cheryl Burke, Derek Hough, and Mark Ballas return. I’d also love to see the return of Maks Chmerkovksiy, Peta Murgatroyd, and Edyta Śliwińska. How about you? Be sure to read more at US Magazine.
The ratings have not been what the network had hoped for, despite changing things up with an all-athletes season last spring and Dancing With the Stars: Juniors, which wrapped this month.
The source also added that there are talks of season 28, set to air in the fall, being the last. If that happens, the network is hoping to bring back multiple original pros, including Karina Smirnoff, Cheryl Burke, Derek Hough, Mark Ballas and many more.
“They want to have a great last season if there is just one season left,” the source noted.
If this was indeed the case, my top choices would be Derek, Mark, Julianne, Lacey, Chelsie, Karina and Kym
Wow, this is quite disappointing if true. ABC killed what was a great show that was still performing decently up until last fall. Then they had to reboot Idol for no reason, and stick it to Dancing. I don’t know on what universe they thought the Athletes season was going to be a good idea of for the show. I think a lot of it has been the format the last few seasons as well, with so much crammed into two hours and the endings always being rushed. This past season was such a doozy though. Between Bobby’s win, Joe advancing to the semis, and the show reeking more of manipulation than normal, I felt like they were just going through the motions at this point and making things up as it went along. There was definitely a different feel. I hope Idol was worth it because I don’t see that having a long future on TV. I wish they’d try and change things up for a couple of seasons and see if that helps.
Pretty much any pro I’d want to see back would back pre-season 10: Edyta, Anna, Chelsie, Karina, Dmitry, Tony, Jonathan, Alec, Derek, and Mark. I’d also add Tristian to the mix, even though he didn’t join until season 13.
It’s hard to imagine that Derek would be back although a best season before ending would not be complete without him. Or Mark. Also, I would be so happy for them to get Karina back and give her someone good, her dancing is sublime. And I miss Anna too, and Kym.
I’m not convinced that season 28 is going to be the last season, for the simple reason that I’m not sure ABC is going to be able to find something suitable to replace it anytime soon. A DWTS with lower ratings is still somewhat of a viewership juggernaut, and unless someone drops a gold mine of an idea in ABC’s lap that will a) pull in better ratings and b) not completely break the bank, I think DWTS sticks around for at least a few more years – particularly now that they’ve eliminated spring season (thereby freeing up some money). It’s not as though ABC can afford to do (2) seasons of American Idol a year. While I think the outcome of season 27 isn’t a complete killer, I think it should put the network on notice that they really need to focus on producing a QUALITY season 28, since they don’t have the quantity anymore.
As for the pros they want back – hehe, good luck, ABC. No way WOD lets Derek come back – NBC is not known for sharing. Not sure he’d even want to if asked. Ditto for Mark – he seems to have washed his hands of DWTS. Karina is a maybe, though she seems to be pretty happy back on the competition circuit. They probably have Cheryl anyway, since she’s a fall-only pro these days. They could probably get Peta & Maks back if they threw enough money their way, but I’m not sure it’d be worth it – Maks has gotten so damn lazy with his choreo and even attempting to maintain a working relationship with his partners.
Great lists Ally, Kara, and Jess! Love them.
And I agree Kara….they killed our show by rebooting Idol. DWTS was down a little ratings before that, but, it was still in the top 5-8 (if I remember right) and needed be treated as such not second rate to AI. We also didn’t need a short season in the Spring diminishing it even further. Then again, I’ve mostly tried to go by the philosophy: ” If you can’t put your “all” into something, then don’t do it at all.”
Court, I hope you are right how Season 28 isn’t the last for all the reasons you listed. I agree… “Quality” is EVERYTHING!! Bring back top notch choreo. A good and real journey is what I love too. Also, well thought out pro performances every week like Strictly Come Dancing.
You know, I’d like to have all of the classics back — Louis, Karina, Anna, Cheryl, Derek, Mark, Julianne (!), Edyta, plus Sharna, Peta, Emma etc.
I have to say, I don’t know what did it, but I pretty much have stopped watching DWTS — I didn’t watch DWTS Junior or much of the athletes season, and I didn’t watch this past season. Have you noticed a drop off on the site’s traffic or other indicators that people aren’t watching?
For me, it was very much a habit to watch, but once the old guard left (ending with Derek/Mark), and once there weren’t any spring seasons, I just wasn’t that into it. Combine that with some weird judging stuff and less adherence to traditional ballroom formats, and it just got less compelling, when there are other dance shows out there.
How is US weekly a reliable source?
Derek hough and Mark ballas Chelsea Hightower peta Val. Anna Whitney Shasha Sharna Cherly Burke. Sharna Lindsay season 28 dwts
Pros I’d like back
Tristan
Tony
Mark
Derek
Lacey
Me, personally, I don’t believe a rag mag like UsWeekly lol. I still think the producers are gonna try to hold onto to the show for a few more seasons, especially if it’s now down to once a year, and give it like a final send-off maybe on season 30? That’s just my thinking. We’ll see I guess lol.
All fans need to unite and not let this be a reality. Start tweeting, posting and tel them how much you love DWTS. This show should not end and American idol can not win out. aBC drove the ratings to the ground, just like what they are gonna do to the Oscars. Fight for Dancing people – if you were ever a fan we need to let ABC know that we want this show to continue. Tweet, post, email!
Derek does the usual song and dance (heh) when asked about DWTS (both competing AND judging) and says “never say never” but I really don’t see it happening. Court is right – NBC is unlikely to share, so unless it gets cancelled that’s a big road block. Even if it isn’t cancelled, Derek has also said that his 2019 is “jam packed”…and he’s been talking a bit about “Singin’ in the Rain” again. The door hasn’t been completely shut on that idea.
Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Most entertainment outlets are rags, but occasionally they do get something right. And the idea itself is kind of a no brainer.
Mary Ann, I’m hoping they retool it to be more like Strictly Come Dancing. One season with a one-night Christmas special would be great.
#Liz I WISH they would actually change the format of the show and do a lot of things the way Strictly does it, especially if we’re only going to get one season a year? I would have no problem with a longer season, more couples and a less is more approach when it comes to set decorations, costumes, etc. If I’m not mistaken, strictly does all that. If we’re going to get one season a year, make it worth it in terms of quality. There’s a reason why Strictly has lasted as long as it has in that country and DWTS originated from that show. I absolutely agree that they need to take some cues from Strictly to see what works there and try to make it work here more.
I like to see back for season 28 dwts Derek hough Mark ballas. Whitney Lindsay Sharna Jenna peta Maskim Val. Keo tony
Again, DWTS HAS NO CHOICE when it comes to how many episodes there are and how long they are. And when you are limited to 9 or 10 weeks, that means you are pretty limited on the number of couples.
As for the rest of it, yes they could probably do some of that.
I’d like to see Ashly and Damian. Alec and Edyta as well.
