Dancing with the Stars Season 28, THE FINALE – LIVE BLOG

I must say, I’m  very curious to see what the three stooges will do tonight. How desperate for an Ally win are they?? Or was their only goal to get her to the finale?? Questions, questions.  I’m going to split all my votes between Hannah and Kel because I’d be happy with either of them winning.

T-minus 30 minutes…until we sit through two hours of bloat to see who wins.

Here comes the opening number…Love Ally and Hannah’s dresses while speaking.

Daniella continues to put all the other women to shame. We should have seen more of her this season.

Erin’s dress is gorgeous. Honestly, the rotating choreographers on the pro number have made them somewhat refreshing.

Ally dancing first – the new pimp spot. Seems they want her to get plenty of votes.

And she’s…singing?? Double whammy….doing a jive to proud Mary which Derek did perfectly with Nicole in their finale.  Ally ain’t no Nicole.  Her feet are way off for one thing.

Len: Only going to be one winner. You’ve done your chances no harm at all. Fantastic. (I see how we’re going here – Ally can do no wrong.)

Bruno: That’s how you start a show. Full throttle. Maximum effect.

CAI: Been a lot of controversy – that is why you are here tonight. (bullshit – you all are just justifying last weeks decision.)

Apparently we’re only going to watch Hannah and Kel’s feet this week.

Erin can’t even keep Ally and Lauren straight.

Scores: 10, 10, 10 for a total of 30.  Shocker.

Lauren and Gleb are up next. She’s doing her foxtrot to Jolene. She’s a sweet girl – if only she wasn’t with Gleb.

She’s still not  a really natural mover like the other three are. I blame Gleb.  What is it about this dance it just seems so…joyless.

Bruno: What I Like about you is you bring the character to life. (why does the audience have mason jars?).  Lines and balance have improved.

CAI: Emotionally you weren’t as open as the first time, you’ve developed as a dancer but you’re holding back as a dancer. Let it all out.

And Tom tries to skip Len. 🙂

Len: Mix of flair and care. (the set falls apart) Well done.

Scores: 9, 9, 9 for a total of 27

Okay, so, everyone is going to get 9s except Ally. I think we predicted this.  Kel up next, Hannah last.

Kel is doing his jazz, in case anyone has forgotten. He got a tiny bit off time but over all he’s killing it . He might get hammered for picking something that isn’t ballroom, in addition to his freestyle – and it’s not a particularly difficult dance. I wonder if he REALLY picked this dance…..essentially doing two freestyles in one night, since jazz on DWTS isn’t real Jazz.

CAI: Great the first time, better the second time. So spot on with delivery.

Len: There’s no hiding place, out in front the whole time.

Bruno: Uplifting, positive, life affirming. Beautiful to watch.

Maybe there is hope from someone other than Ally…

Scores: 10, 10, 10 for a total of 30 (color me shocked).

Eh, before anyone goes nuts seeing Hannah in the Bachelor preview….if you don’t actually watch the show you don’t even know how bad they are about airing previews that are not even remotely close to reality.  Heavily edited so when you see the actual show it was nothing.

Hannah doing her V. Waltz…not sure why, but….

Anyway, she seems to have her head right tonight in the package. I hope this dance is impactful enough. I’m not sure. Her posture looks good.  I see no obvious flaws. I wonder if the judges will manufacture a couple.

Len: You put the turns in. Lovely sweeping movement.

Bruno: You are in full bloom, more confident. You went on the wrong foot. It was beautiful.

CAI: Your best dance of the season. You have a lightness and ease of motion.

Scores: 10, 9, 9 for a total of 28

I want Hannah to win just to screw over the judges.

NUMBERS UPDATE: Assuming everyone gets a 30 on their freestyle, in order for Kel or Ally to win, each needs one point more than the other and they need for Hannah and Lauren to not cover the spread. Hannah needs 8,600 more votes per million votes cast than both Kel and Ally (and for Lauren to not cover the spread) in order to win. Lauren needs 4,300 and 12.8k more votes per million votes cast than Hannah, Kel/Ally, respectively, to win.

I suspect that neither Lauren nor Hannah will get a perfect score on the freestyle in order to give Ally a better shot.

Ally up with her freestyle – how is Ally “what this show is all about?”  I’m confused, Sasha.

She looks great. A couple little awkward moves I can’t figure out. That lift was just bad. And she’s even off time in her freestyle – a bit behind Sasha at one point She was the only one not moving her feet at one point. Last lift was also very awkward. Refrain from lifts, Sasha.

That was unimpressive.

Bruno: Unleash the star power.  Jennifer lopez invading. Love the tribal bits. Lot of actual latin dancing.

CAI: (doing her usual over reaction) Never seen anything like that (are you fucking kidding ME?).

Len: High energy, nice bit of salsa. Loved that the music was recreated in every move.

They are quite desperate for her to win, aren’t they?? Keep telling the audience how great she is and soon everyone will believe.

Ally, you were in the bottom two THREE times!

Scores: 10, 10, 10 for a total of 30. 60 for the night.

Good god, Bobby Bones working super hard to get his mug on TV.

This AI thing is dumb. None of the three seem that excited.

Ugh. Gleb. Maybe if you lost the supreme arrogance and took some choreography notes you would be remotely likable.

Country themed freestyle. Took Lauren forever to actually dance – did more sitting. Gleb showcases himself. She does a better lift than Ally though.

Oh goodie another singer. Come on. Unbelievable amount of time NOT dancing in this freestyle.

CAI: Everyone’s freestyle is so different – this one is perfect for you. I adore you, adored your journey.

Len: You paid homage to your roots. Full of entertainment.

Bruno: The line dancing was delicious. I’m a happy man.

Scores: 10, 10, 10 for a perfect 30.

So, like half the celebrities will be on tour. All four finalists. So why the extreme pimpage of Ally? Is her label owned by Disney??

Hannah up next….still a little showmance in the package.

The first 20 seconds are better than anything Ally or Lauren did.

Now THAT was a freestyle. She just put the other two women to shame – by a mile. Well done!!

Len: Caught me unawares – you came out sharp, crisp, bold. You really threw me and it was great!

Bruno: Dramatic to acrobatic to sexy. AT inspired opening, beautifully insync

CAI: You are living your best life and this is so beautiful to see. Victorious freestyle.

CAI just can’t help herself. Two dances before Hannah’s were just not great. And full of issues that were ignored.

Scores: 10, 10, 10 for a total of 30.

Come on, Kel. Kill it.

I’m not really into this so far. And I usually like hip hop. Like how it speeds up and then down at the end. I find it amusing that Witney is actually better at hip hop then Kel is.

He likely went last because of the car.

Bruno: What a ride! And what a night. Love it. Final acceleration was exhilarating.

CAI:  My inner fly girl is so happy. Represented.

Len: I’m not going to be the party pooper because it’s not in my nature. This was for me was similar to the first dance you did (I foresaw that). I’m not saying it wasn’t good, I would have just liked (many boos).

Scores: 10, 9, 10 for a 29 out of 30.

Erin claims it’s one of the best freestyles she’s ever seen? Put down the crack pipe, girl. That wasn’t even close. It was good, verging on great – but best ever? No.

Okay, here we go!!

LOL – Love Kel’s dad.

Wonder if there is anything to this order of the clips.

Fourth Place: Lauren and Gleb

Third Place: Ally and Sasha

And the WINNER IS: Hannah and Alan!!

Congrats to Hannah and Kel.  Kel came from a likely early elimination to take second place – his accomplishment should not be under rated.

PureDWTS Season 28 News: Kel Mitchell Reveals He Almost Wasn’t Part of This Season’s Cast

Ahead of the finale tonight, I just thought this was a very, very interesting tidbit from ET – thanks Zoe for sending it my way:

Kel Mitchell‘s Dancing With the Stars stint almost didn’t happen.

ET’s Lauren Zima caught up with the 41-year-old comedian and his partner, Witney Carson, during camera blocking ahead of DWTS‘ Monday finale, and he revealed that he was the last person to be cast on the show this season.

“I was the last one picked for Dancing With the Stars,” the Good Burger star added, much to the shock of his partner. “Somebody dropped out and that’s how I got in this thing.”

Mitchell learned of his last-minute addition to the cast as soon as he agreed to do the show because the producers quickly told him, “You’re gonna have to jump on a plane, like, immediately.”

“I was just like, ‘OK. Alright,'” he recalled. “It was no talks. It was a call out of no where and I was like, ‘Of course I’ll do Dancing With the Stars. This is awesome!'”

Before anyone asks – no, I have no idea who he replaced; if I had to make a guess, I’d go back to my Gronk theory from the preseason, because I can’t imagine his name wasn’t in the mix this season – the timing was just too perfect. But I digress – I just think it’s awfully interesting that a guy who was the last cast member signed (and only because the show’s first choice bailed) ended up in the finals.  This isn’t the first case of a cast member being signed last minute as a replacement – John Ratzenberger stepped in for Vincent Pastore in season 4, Carson Kressley replaced Ryan O’Neal in season 13, and as recently as season 25, Terrell Owens replaced Bobby Brown in the 11th hour. It is, however, a rare case of a replacement celeb making it to the finals – the only other instance I can recall is Rycroft eking out 3rd place after replacing Nancy O’Dell back in season 8.

I’ll definitely be tickled if he manages to win tonight 😉

Dancing with the Stars Season 28, THE FINALE – Who’s Dancing What…and When??

To think, last week I started this post with how it was going to be a “much nicer” week. Ah, I was so naive then. 🙂  I confess to being rather curious to see what the moronic judges are going to pull this week. And somewhat afraid.  Here what the press release has to say:

For this last week of the competition, the opening number will consist of the remaining couples dancing to “Last Dance” by Donna Summer. There will be two rounds of dancing where each couple will do one repeat performance from earlier this season. And in the last element of competition, the couples will perform the most anticipated dance of the season—the fan-favorite freestyle routine.

Mega-superstar Cher will perform her classic “The Beat Goes On,” while Pitbull and Ne-Yo performs “3 to Tango” and “Me Quedaré Contigo.” In addition, the ballroom and viewing audiences will have a first look at the new season of “The Bachelor,” and the winner of the “American Idol” fan vote will be revealed live. Eliminated celebrities from this season will return to the ballroom for a final number.

Oh goodie, this show is packed with far more crap than your standard finale, include the American Idol fan vote winner – rub salt in the wound, ABC. Katy Perry takes DWTS budget with her ridiculously bloated salary and you pull AI into DWTS. Thanks a hell of a lot. Not only that, but Pitbull performs for the 500th time, in his annual reappearance. But wait! There’s more…

In addition, the professional dancers that will be participating in “Dancing with the Stars – Live Tour 2020” will dance to “How Do I Know” performed by Ray Chew Live. At the end of the night, there will be an announcement revealing which celebrities will be joining the professional dancers on the nationwide tour.

Vying for America’s vote, each couple will dance to a variety of songs including Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire,” Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl,” Luke Bryan’s “Country Girl,” Kriss Kross’ “Jump” and Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine’s “Conga,” among others.

Which celebrities will be joining the tour. Considering the shit they’ve given Hannah all season, I would be surprised if she were one. And I would think that Lauren has too much going on. Betcha we see Ally on tour. I hope Kel goes on tour so maybe he has a shot to win. :::shrug::: They don’t need the winner on the tour and I believe they’ve done more than one without the winner, so who knows?

The dances are interesting. I wonder if the couples picked them? I tend to doubt it – Hannah choose a week one dance? Why not her quickstep, which was arguably her best dance? Lauren chose a week 4 dance. Both could work – have a pretty dance combined with an explosive freestyle.  It could be they both show nice range.  That said, if the judges or producers picked, it’s possible they want both to fail.  Ally gets Jive, which she first did in week 4.  Depending on her freestyle, it could be a mistake.  I think Kel has the best set of the night, but of course, the last time I said that the judges sent James home. So who the hell knows?

Kel and Witney – Jazz and Freestyle

Ally and Sasha – Jive and Freestyle

Hannah and Alan – Viennese Waltz and Freestyle

Lauren and Gleb – Foxtrot and Freestyle

DWTS Season 28, The Semi-Final: DANCING BY THE NUMBERS

I decided that this week would be a good one for a numbers post, mainly due to all the claims of “James was obviously a fan favorite” and other related, somewhat silly commentary. Well, that and I had just a tiny bit of spare time. ????

Look, I loved James and not just because he’s hot. Well, largely because he’s hot. He’s really grown into his own face. Dude is hot and is a pretty good dancer. Best dancer ever on DWTS? Of course not. But that’s not a requirement to win the competition, believe it or not. The only requirement to win the show is that you have the highest combined score. Period. Now, of course, for a show that really IS a dance competition, having someone like Bobby Bones win is just ridiculous. But it’s not *unfair*. Just ridiculous. Like Bobby himself. Ridiculous. And very off putting to the general audience. Read more..

PureDWTS Season 28, Week 10: Power Rankings – Who Will Win?

Before the show each week, I start to compile a list of talking points in my head that I can include in the intro to the week’s power rankings. General, all-encompassing thoughts that seem to summarize what is going on on the show at any given time. Headed into Monday night’s show, my thoughts were something along the lines of “Y’know, aside from you-know-who and maybe Ray being included this season, this has actually been a really great cast and the funny business has been kept to a minimum. Glad that we’re headed into the finale with the right group of people!” Well, strike that – the judges managed to ruin that sentiment in one unceremonious swoop last night, when they opted to eliminate possibly the best and most consistent dancer this season (who had never been in the bottom two before) in favor of saving someone who was in the bottom two for the third time (and is consistently overscored). Do I even need to mention that James likely only fell into the bottom two owing to personal tragedy striking over the weekend, which likely affected his performances? His bottom two appearance was a fluke, and he had a record of solid performances over the span of this season that should have made him the easy choice for saving – and yet the judges discarded him without batting an eye.  This is unfortunately exactly what I worried would happen with the judges’ save in my power rankings last week – the judges using it to REPEATEDLY contradict the viewer vote. I’ve seen several theories from folks trying to make sense of why James was eliminated over Ally, and I guess I’ll just address them in list form:

“Maybe James asked to be eliminated so he could go home to be with his family!”

We’ve had contestants that have dropped out for all sorts of reasons over the years – injuries (i.e. Misty May-Treanor, Dorothy Hamill), illnesses (i.e. Tamar Braxton, Kim Zolciak), even interpersonal issues (Sara Evans left season 3 because she was getting divorced). If James wanted to go home, he could have very easily just announced that he was withdrawing, and I don’t think anyone would have begrudged him for it. Why go through the whole song and dance of rigging an elimination, and making the judges look absolutely insane??? And why have James beg for votes after getting his second score? Both he and Emma looked genuinely shocked and devastated when they were eliminated, so I tend to think this was NOT pre-planned. He seemed to be enjoying the experience of DWTS too much to just withdraw.

“Did James maybe pose too much of a threat to Hannah winning, so they got rid of him?”

I would say he was probably the most likely to play spoiler to a Hannah win, but why would they put so much emphasis on Hannah winning??? Sure, she’s ABC family, but I don’t think they had to make a bunch of wacky promises to get her to sign onto the cast (she seemed pretty willing to do the show), and she’s arguably at the END of her ABC shelf life (Bachelor & Bachelorette stints are already over, the possibility of a Tyler C. reconciliation is dead and buried, Bachelor in Paradise won’t air until next fall – IF they would even cast her)…so I don’t really see an advantage for ABC propping her up for the win. It would have actually made more sense to me to ensure James won, as it would uphold the narrative that the new system works to make sure dancers that are both good and popular with the audience win (and we don’t get another Bones).

“Did the judges maybe think James needed to go be with his family?”

If so, they had no business projecting that onto James – PERIODT. Ask James if he wants to go home; don’t assume he wants to go home because of what he’s going through, or assume that it’s the “right thing to do” given the circumstances. Bitch please – give the poor man agency over his own life, and don’t be so arrogant so as to assume you know what’s best for him.

Are they trying to make sure that Ally wins?

If so, it’s a fool’s errand – she’s been in the bottom two THREE times now; do they judges think she’s somehow gonna miraculously rally the votes to take home the MBT next week??? ‘Cause I sure don’t. If the viewers weren’t voting for her by now, they’re not gonna vote for her next week – especially now that she’s got the stink of being the one that the judges eliminated James for hanging over her head. Not her fault, but I’ll admit that I’m probably not going to be throwing any votes her way – she should have been gone by now. Additionally – WHAT DOES THE SHOW GAIN FROM ALLY WINNING? Are they trying to change the narrative to “screw the viewer votes, the judges know best!” Because that’s the only outcome I see from the unlikely event that Ally somehow manages to win. She’s part of a defunct girl group, she’s not got any huge projects in the pipeline…is she the tour celeb??? One of the celebs on this new, ill-conceived DWTS vacay??? Who knows. Bottom line: I don’t see any great benefit to the show or the network in the highly unlikely event Ally wins.

“Ally was clearly the better dancer, so it makes sense that James got eliminated!”

Delusion, thy name is Harmonizers. It could be argued that Ally’s a better all-around dancer than Lauren, possibly a better showman than Hannah, and perhaps a better technician than Kel – I even said last week that I think Ally’s probably the second-best dancer this season. But James had Ally beat on ALL FRONTS, and he was the only one I thought for sure that the judges would ditch Ally for. Sis’ two dances last night were okay-to-decent – but they weren’t James-level polished, and when you take into account the fact that James (even in his off-weeks) consistently was by and large better than everyone else this season, the decision to keep him should have been a no-brainer. Ally’s a great girl and a good dancer – but she ain’t the best. Overscored, sure. It’s not even subjective at this point – James was the better dancer, period.

Was this all just for drama?

Who knows – maybe. With the unmentionable one gone, did they somehow need to stir up drama in another way? If so, this was a dangerous (and possibly counter-intuitive) game to play – I feel James would have been someone that people specifically tuned in to watch in the finale, and now that he’s gone, I could see ratings taking a tumble. Are people talking about what happened Monday night? Sure.  But will it translate to viewers? Doubtful.

All conspiracy theories aside, I’m honestly gutted for James – both for the tragedy he’s currently enduring on the home front, as well as his magical journey on DWTS coming to an abrupt and unexpected end. I was really looking forward to seeing a freestyle from him & Emma! I think he’s right up there with Hinch and Shad as one of the best male celebs without dance experience that we’ve had on the show – hell, he might be THE best male celeb without dance experience that we’ve had on the show. He’s also a class act that hasn’t said one bitter word since his elim (though I would not shame him if he did), and has been nothing but gracious and supportive of the remaining finalists.  To Ally’s credit, she also tearfully begged James to take her spot in the finals – she saw the writing on the wall (that James was the better dancer with the better track record) and also felt terrible that he got eliminated in a week where he had already endured so much sorrow. So to make my stance clear: what happened sucked, but I don’t blame anyone but the judges – it was their low-balling and just mind-boggling decision-making that caused James’ elimination, NOT Ally. So sending her (or any of the other remaining contestants) bad energy or abuse? Not a good look – I would hope our readers here are smarter and more emotionally intelligent than that 😉 Read more..

Pure DWTS Season 28 Week 10 – Interviews, Recaps, Scores, Photos, And Extras

I’m so bummed on this show again. 🙁 What a shame James & Emma weren’t save at the end of the show last night. They were my favorite and one of the ultimate best. Court is in the thick of getting her Power Rankings written. So stay tuned for that too.
