“Best of Dancing with the Stars” as Alternative Programming??
Well, I happened on this today and I must say, it sounds like a damn good idea to me!! Especially if they go all the way back to Season 5. 🙂 This article from Hollywood Reporter will make you think, though, about what happens if COVID19 goes on as long as I think it will go on. Sad to say, I don’t think we’re all going to be back at work in June without a resurgence of the virus – so what does that do to TV?? See the title of this article. 🙂 Here’s an excerpt where the idea is floated:
Another option that multiple networks are currently considering is to take a page from late night and repackage repeats with new content that appeals to diehard fans. ABC recently announced a “Flashback Friday” of sorts for long-running soap General Hospital, with new introductions to classic episodes. ABC, sources say, is also considering airing themed repeats — like a “best-of” Dancing With the Stars or some of its other franchises.
I vote DWTS!! Seeing skinny Derek dancing with Jennie or Lil Kim (among others) would certainly brighten up my isolation! Of course, World of Dance season 4 was completed right before the shutdown (sans audience for the finale), so there’s that.
I remember years ago there was a network that ran old seasons of DWTS going back to season 1. Granted, I think the series was only up around season 10 or something, so it wasn’t like there was a lot of catch up. Still, I’d be all for it. The Bachelorette isn’t filming as of now (not sure if it will in time for summer), so that’s going to leave a gap right there, and I don’t know when American Idol will pick up filming. So ABC might have time in their schedule. I’d love it! Especially because, sad as it is, I don’t know if we’ll get a regular DWTS this fall.
I’m all for it too!! There are so many dances from Derek I’d love to rewatch – Mark too, for that matter. Even Maks, in his heyday was fun to watch. Kym, Karina…most of the ladies.
The classic episodes that General Hospital has given to Friday’s is misleading and disappointing so far. The episodes have been ones that have aired within the past year. I consider classics as coming from the heyday of the show from the 8os for example. They could air the very first episode, etc. They air repeats on holidays but they are the same, current episodes.
I would love to see highlights of DWTS air from the beginning somehow. Just give us something ABC to whet our DWTS appetites, I miss the show and would love to see something air.
The Game Show network aired some repeats of DWTS a few years back but it was short lived.
I’ve been praying for this to happen! I’d even be willing to pay Disney Plus to re-air the series in it’s entirety from season one to the most recent. This would be fantastic & I hope it comes to fruition.
As I had stopped watching a few years ago, I would love to go back and view the “Derek Era” episodes, particularly those prior to Val joining the show. How terrific it would be to see the Macy’s numbers, along with the beautiful ballroom dances of the early years. Jonathan and Anna danced some beautiful waltzes together that were really memorable. Mark and Catherine’s season was so terrific, too! Hope this happens, and that everyone is staying safe out there. As a retired infection preventionist, I fully anticipate my state, at least, will be sheltering in place through May. I am going bananas with this isolation, even though it is the right thing to do.
I was thinking if DWTS wanted to get fans back after all the COVID is done, their first new show should be with THE REAL STARS. The First Responders who are keeping us alive and posting some great dance videos. Voting would be fair and I can’t help but think old fans would come back as well. What are your thoughts? I actually sent that to ABC Dancing.
#7 Patti, I think this is a wonderful idea! I would watch, for sure.
I’m down for that but secretly hoping for a old school disney movies.
I just had a crazy amazing idea for DWTS and how they can use this time wisely to reevaluate where dwts stands in current times. So my idea was essentially a DWTS Renaissance, where they take the new season, and fo back to the basics. 6 celebrities and pros, to help reduce risk if they come back, and the cure has just started to be administered worldwide. Celebrities would have to sign a disclosure if the above is the case to socially isolate themselves for two or three weeks before training starts. Then for an even more interesting spin have it live from the Grove or another open venue, but have the audience social distance by setting up the venue with garden tables and chairs for groups and everyone’s group is no bigger than six and six feet apart from the next table. Might have to do a summer season if that’s the case, but who knows? Also every partnership must wear gloves, when dancing, and only the original ballroom and latin dances. For a long season I’d do a two week by before 1st elimination and have anothe byeweek before the finale.
