Tyra Banks Talks to Extra about DWTS Season 29 and Derek Hough
Geezus, this constant need to chase a younger audience. They’ve been doing it for years and it always makes the show WORSE instead of better. I don’t know what makes them think that Tyra and her “pixie dust” is going to be an improvement.
.@tyrabanks dishes on some changes in store for #DWTS and confirms the return of @derekhough!

She also spoke to ET and all but confirmed that Len is going to be staying in England and they’re not sure how they’re going to use him. That sure leaves a big hole for someone like Derek to step into!
“Carrie Ann is definitely back, and Bruno, who I can’t wait to vibe with because he is just as crazy as I am,” Banks, 46, confirmed to ET. “At the moment, we’re trying to figure out how to incorporate Len Goodman because he is in England and there’s all these travel restrictions because of COVID-19. So we’re trying to figure that out.”
And if this doesn’t scare you about this season, nothing will…
Banks, who previously was a judge for shows like America’s Next Top Model, added that having to sit back and simply watch the dances isn’t going to be an easy feat.
“That’s going to be the hardest thing in the world. I’m not a professional dancer but I still know performance and I know it well,” she explained. “So to have to hold back and not be able to [critique], like, that’s not my role. My role is to be the cheerleader, to be the champ, to be that ringmaster and to be, I call it, the hype-man DJ. To keep the room pumped.”
Banks joked, however, that she “might have to cuss out a judge every now and then” though.
I have a feeling I’m going to be screaming at my TV A LOT “You’re a model fer god’s sake, shut the hell up!!” She goes on to say this about Derek…which makes it sound like he’ll be neither judge NOR pro….either that or she’s dumb, not realizing he’s been a judge for four season on a far superior show.
“Yeah, Derek is coming back in a very interesting way,” Banks shared, playing coy. “I am very excited about that because I know Derek and he’s fun. But you just gonna have to wait and see how he’s coming back. You’ll know next week!”
Hough’s official role will be revealed next Tuesday during Good Morning America.
She also did an interview on access Hollywood
It occurred to me after I wrote this post that “very interesting” would be if Derek and Hayley did dances every week similar to what they did for the Disney Family Singalongs. That’s more interesting than Derek doing something that he’s been doing for years on a better dance show, IMO.
Not to mention that the show’s shot at a choreography emmy would go way up.
BTW, if you read the rest of the article, you see Tyra says something that she told the pros about and a bunch of them were like “cool” but Cheryl Burke was obviously skeptical. I trust Cheryl’s opinion more than any of the other pros, so be scared.
I have nothing against Tyra so I wish people would quit hating on her. It’s not her fault the show is on a downward spiral she was hired to save it. Yes Tom has been host for awhile but things change. When ratings go down you have to make drastic changes. I am not a huge Tyra fan but she’s got energy and it’s new. I am still not watching as I haven’t for several years now. The issue with the show is the producers. They have way too much control over who gets the crown. It’s been quite obvious for many seasons it’s all rigged for the producers picks. Judges save didn’t help any matters so unless it’s a strictly unbiased scoring system and votes that are fair to all time zones then the show will continue to be unwatchable. I love Derek and would love to say he will save the show but I am very skeptical. The show needs to end or do a complete revamp with new pros bit just one or two though I’m glad Britt finally gets some recognition. The meme guest stars need to stop like Carole sorry but I’m not giving her any more attention than she’s already gotten. I plan on watching my fave pairs in YouTube and not deal with the rest.
Wow Ashley – you sure have some strong opinions about a show that you 1.) aren’t watching, and 2.) haven’t watched for several years.
Tyra’s trash, and IS one of the producers you are complaining about having “too much control”. She brings a lot of this criticism on herself, so I don’t have much sympathy for her – and I suggest you look into her rather problematic history as a host on other shows before declaring that you “have nothing against her”.
Judging by the online reaction (and even comments from former celebs Alfonso, Jordan, and James Van Der Beek), firing Tom and choosing Tyra and letting her be front and center in the promos and the first promo poster hasn’t exactly gone over well. It really annoys me some of the comments I’ve read from producers and people like Carrie Ann about the show being different but people having to accept it (they can just tune out), or saying Tyra will bring a compassion to the couples and they wanted a new energy to the show. Unlike Tom, I also can’t picture her not interrupting the judges or throwing in her two cents every two seconds. At first I wasn’t even sure I wanted to watch but I love the show too much to boycott. I agree that this desperate need for younger viewers hasn’t worked no matter what they’ve done. And in the process it’s alienating their actually fan base. I feel like bringing Derek back, in whatever capacity, is an attempt at ratings.
As to Len, I read that Bruno may do Zoom into Strictly for some of the episodes. Rumor is that Len isn’t liking the changes Tyra is proposing to the show, which I can believe, so this may be a way for them to get rid of Len and blame it on COVID, which is probably the legit reason he’ll be out this season.
Well, Ashley, I wish people who don’t even watch the show would stop coming here just to bitch about people bitching. Neither of us is likely to get what we want. Lucky for me, though, I can always block the people who don’t watch if they keep coming here just to complain about what we write.
I come here because I always have I love the stuff you guys do and I’m loyal to a tee. Sadly it seems like Kristyn has the inside scoop anymore which is another reason why the show is just not fun. I enjoyed coming here to interact and see if we could figure out clues and just talk about our fave picks for the season. DWTS is a show I love from season 1 and it saddens me to see it just being slowly worse every season. I keep watching for tips here hoping maybe things will work because I’m an optimist. The more I hear the more I’m about to stop even watching the videos. Yes I’ve heard about tyras other escapades but again as an optimist I’m giving her a chance before I trash her. So far I’m not liking how the promos are all her and don’t have high expectations for her making this show better. She may be a producer now but the issues started with the previous seasons. I imagine she will just follow suit with them. I usually vote but i don’t think it helps any since TPTB seem to choose finale at week one. If this is how y’all want to be then I won’t come here anymore. You never have any new info anyways.
I saw that poster of Tyra with the disco ball lips and thought: it’s “Dancing with the Star” now.
If Derek and Haley danced and produced a weekly video like they did for Disney, would it qualify Derek for multiple category Emmy nominations? Maybe video editing, lighting, etc., in addition to choreography? I am also wondering if Julianne or Mark fit into the picture here somewhere even though there has been no announcement. I hope Len returns as a judge as I respect his knowledge of dance. Tyra’s comment about “knowing performance” sure opens the door for manipulation, though, doesn’t it??? I will probably tune out everything except Derek’s participation.
Also, if Cheryl’s antennae are up there is a good reason to be suspicious- I agree. Just changing hosts and bringing in Derek doesn’t equate to a “new look’ or revamped show. What else are they up to?
This season has so so much potential, and I think with the COVID situation more people will be at home/feeling nostalgic. That being said, I am still completely flummoxed that they took away the one thing that always worked (Tom). Sometimes, he was the only part of the show that was working for me.
I am absolutely dreading Tyra in general and her “input” might have me turning off the TV and going straight to YouTube to watch the dances. I personally think she is a terrible host in general, and the last thing I want is her opinion on dancing. Every time she speaks I get less and less excited. And I agree, if Cheryl is skeptical, I’m skeptical. She’s one of the best pros this show has ever had, and she has a pretty good read on the show usually.
It sounds like they might be incorporating more new dance styles, which would not be great. With Jazz, Contemporary, etc there are already too many dances without rules. I want to watch someone learn Samba, Foxtrot, etc.
#5} I agree we do need younger viewers. I think they need to get younger celebs, we have one 18 year old and the rest are 35 & up
#10 I so agree with you about wanting to watch someone actually learn foxtrot, tango, waltz, etc. I wish each week that each contestant was given 3 dance moves that they had to demonstrate in their style of dance for that week, along with AN APPROPRIATE SONG to use for that style. The 3 moves should be consistant for the style from week to week to keep things fair. Every celeb should at least have to perform the same 4 dances before being allowed jazz or contemporary, such as: Viennese Waltz, Jive, Tango, Foxtrot.
I know, I am delusional and dreaming….
I think calling Tyra trash may be a bit extreme, but I am Also concerned about bringing in someone who has presided over *reality shows* that are even trashier than what DWTS is now. I watched regularly from season 1 to the athlete season in 2018 and have only watched rarely since. Part of it is that I miss Derek/Mark/Julianne and their energy. I think the dancing became a lot more generic, and what I liked about DWTS is how the pros and stars solved the puzzle of teaching difficult ballroom dance. And the last part is the overtly political guests they had on — for me, Spicer was the last straw. It seems like this season may be better on the political front, and possibly having Derek may help. And I’m thrilled to see Sharna back. But I just don’t know if Tyra’s sensibilities will result in version of DWTS that brings me back.
I don’t know that I buy COVID and people being home will result in higher ratings. I do think there’s a chance ratings improve, but I don’t think it’ll be by much, and I still believe that DWTS is on borrowed time, at least at ABC (not sure if another network would pick it up if it was cancelled). I don’t know if the ratings will drastically dip, but they’ve been going down every year, especially since this show went to one season a year. I think the curiosity factor may get people to tune in at first, but by mid-season, ratings will be down. While there may not be as much competition on the air in terms of returning or new shows, there’s still going to be Monday Night Football and The Voice, two shows that DWTS competed with. And people may want to check out new offerings that will be out there. So I don’t know that this is going to make people tune in.
@Nukegrrrl I like the picture Tom posted on his Twitter of a little mirror ball up over his mouth-you know it’s totally a jab at the promo poster of Tyra.
All this hype over Tyra and I just really am torn this season. I’m still not understanding where the stars are??? All the promos are of her like we care?? We watch to cheer on our pros and sometimes the celebrities as well. I’ve watched this show from back when it was so good – built on the actual learning of a dance. As a Mark Derek Julianne hardcore fan it’s hard to watch without them. They had such amazing choreo to bring that was fresh. Since they left it’s been ok but the level of dancing has vastly gone down. The last couple of seasons I think I’ve given up hope this show will ever be one of my favorites again. I feel the end is near maybe next season give it a nice round 30??? Bring back fan favorites and go out with a bang. I’m gonna try to watch but odds are I won’t be impressed which is how it’s been for some time. I’m hoping Derek and Hayley will have something to brighten the growing darkness that is Tyra take over straight to the dump. If things don’t wow me night one I think it’s gonna turn into a dvr record so I can ff through to just see the dances I could care less what the host has to say to get attention on herself. Crossing my fingers the right people end up in the end.
I love that Derek is going to be involved and if he is a judge….awesome. Derek in any capacity….awesome. I just really hope that Len at least can judge virtually. .
as expected, with Tyra it’s all about Tyra. First ever DWTS poster with out any dancers, really? I thought the show was called DANCING with the Stars, not BEING the one and only Star. Geesh! I thought Tom’s response was fabulous – former host of Footwork with the Famous LOL LOL
I think she’s going to suck all the oxygen out of the room, stealing all the thunder from everyone, including the judges. If she’s back for another season, we probably won’t even need the judges – Tyra will host AND judge – just think of the money saved! (“Stars Dancing for Tyra”)
interesting cast, for sure, and i’m excited for premier night, but not looking forward to Tyra. We’ll see – i’ve had to eat my words before, i can do it again 😉
In a strange way having Tyra Banks replace Tom and Executive Produce DWTS seems to fit right in with how screwed up and bizarre 2020 has been. We are living in the the Upside Down and nothing is safe, not even a much loved reality competition show that I have been mourning for quite a long time.
I want my Season 4 back. Arguably, for me personally, my favorite season. Straightforward, dance driven, and in hindsight really charming in it’s simplicity, fun and earnestness. A celebrity driven dance competition for Ballroom dance fans, with genuine and rewarding connections made between novice dancers and their dance Professionals and teachers. And Edyta’s ridiculously skimpy costumes and Derek and Mark’s amazing choreography and Tom B. making the hosting gig seem so easy and effortless while also be charming, empathetic and funny.
I feel like Derek maybe coming as a choreographer/mentor to couples or something like that.
Mia, that would have been so cool too.
Kristyn gets paid to get an inside scoop and from what I’ve seen, there isn’t much “scoop” there, beyond spending time trawling the internet for clues just like we used to do. And making good guesses. Whoopee, good for her. But guess what? I have a real life and a real job that takes most of my time these days and don’t really want to spend all my time on the internet any more. That means my tolerance for whining about how other people post is going to be even lower than normal.
Why do you care about “new info” if you’re not going to watch the show?? I watch the show and I don’t even care about new info. And I’m so devastated that you won’t come here any more. Oh, wait, read my first paragraph again.
If they danced, yes he would be eligible for an Emmy for choreo. Other categories, I don’t think so because I think you have to be a regular member of those groups. It’s been a while since I read the Emmy rules.
I think Linde just summed everything up for me. 🙂
Oh noes, Ashley doesn’t like us anymore because we won’t abandon our 9-5 gigs to trawl the internet for her!!!
Girl, bye.
