Dancing with the Stars Season 29, Week 2 – Who’s Dancing What…and When??
Week 2, coming up. Note that it’s apparently airing on Tuesday this week. Lots of disturbing things in the press release, not the least of which is this gem:
The show will begin with a comedic cold open featuring host Tyra Banks and the origins of her “smize” as she teaches the celebrities how to use it through the competition.
The only way this is acceptable is if the include Derek because he seems to make everything fun. 🙂 Next, a little reminder in how the voting is going to work:
Live votes (via abc.com, the ABC app and SMS/text) will occur each week only during the live broadcast in the EDT/CDT time zones (but fans in all U.S. time zones may vote within that window). Moving forward with each subsequent episode, the live vote combined with the judges’ scores will be revealed during the broadcast.
And, finally, who’s dancing what…in the order I had them in last week, which was often wrong. Not that it matters to anyone other than the person dancing last. Whole lotta cha cha and a whole lotta foxtrot.Love that they included a couple old songs that are probably a bit more in line with those dance styles. Justina goes from up tempo to the dreaded rumba. I’ll be curious to see how she does on that one after her standout performance last week. Carole AGAIN gets a song with a cat in the title. :::rolls eyes::: Neither clever nor funny, producers.
AJ & Cheryl – Foxtrot (“Ain’t That a Kick in the Head” by Dean Martin)
Kaitlyn & Artem – Foxtrot (“I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack)
Monica & Val – Jive (“Shake it off” by Taylor Swift)
Vernon & Peta – Foxtrot (“We Found Love!” by Rihanna and Calvin Harris)
Anne & Keo – Foxtrot (“Counting Stars” by One Republic)
Justina & Sasha – Rumba (“When You Believe” by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey)
Jeannie & Brandon – Cha Cha (“Roses” by SAINt JHN)
Skai & Alan – Samba to (“Miss Independent” by Neyo)
Johnny & Britt -Tango (“Poker Face” by Lady Gaga)
Jesse & Sharna – Foxtrot (“Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac)
Nelly & Daniella- Cha Cha (“Let’s Grove” by Earth, Wind & Fire)
Nev & Jenna – Cha Cha (“Dynamite” by BTS)
Charles & Emma – Cha Cha (“Never. Too Much” by Luther Vandross)
Chrishell & Gleb – Rumba (“This is Me” by Keala Settle & “The Greatest Showman” ensemble)
Carole & Pasha – Viennese Waltz (“What’s New Pussycat” by Tom Jones)
This week I had a bit of extra time, so I searched Youtube for some of the songs being used this week to see how often they’ve been used. Totally not scientific because it requires the song to be mentioned in the description of the video.
So, I knew that Poker Face had been used before on DWTS, but I had no idea that nearly EVERYONE has danced to it. Nick and Peta. Cheryl and Gilles. Andy and Sharna. I just remembered Derek and Anna’s pro dance. Seriously, search “DWTS Poker Face” on youtube. Then I googled on Derek and Anna’s names because they didn’t come up with the rest…and that’s because their Paso was to Bad Romance. 🙂 Geez…I knew it was Lady Gaga but sue me if I remember the dance and not the correct song. The point is…Lady Gaga loves this show. She even tweeted Kaitlyn’s dance last week saying she loved it. Derek and Anna are below cuz it’s my favorite. 🙂
Ain’t that a Kick in the Head was also used before…by Julianne and Helio. Just beautiful. It was also used on the DWTS tour, but I didn’t find where any other couples danced to it. Doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, just means it wasn’t tagged in the video.
Derek and Amy danced to Counting Stars…and I didn’t find any others.
I knew also that Shake it Off had been used before…and sure enough, Bethany and Derek used it week one. What, are they recycling only songs that Derek used? 🙂 The answer is no: I just found that Sasha and Tonya danced to When You Believe. 🙂
That’s all for this week. I didn’t have any luck with several of them, so I decided that was enough for tonight.
I remember Ralph and karina’s foxtrot was to ain’t that a kick in the head” as well. One of my favs from him.
Has the show announced how the eliminations will occur and specifically whether the judges are deciding which of the bottom two are going home again this season? Or are we going back to lowest after votes goes home? Personally I really hope they keep the judges vote especially with how many good dancers are on this season, otherwise I suspect we’re going to see a lot of shock eliminations. I can understand if they skip it for the first couple of weeks due to time issues with so many couples, but from around week 4 onwards they really need to bring it back IMO.
Already cringing at Gleb and Chrishell getting a rumba. If Carole makes it to Disney week (which I think is week 3?) I’m guessing she’ll get something from The Lion King. I agree, it wasn’t funny week 1, and I hope this isn’t a trend with her every week that she gets something cat or animal themed. In addition, while I kind of liked the cold open skits last season, if it’s one more excuse for Tyra to forget this show isn’t about her and use them for camera time, then no thanks. I don’t know what smizing is and don’t care.
Sticking with my opinion that Charles will be the first to go, outside chance Anne or Carole. The dance I’m most excited to see is Johnny and Britt. I’d like to see what Nelly would do with a ballroom style, so I’m disappointed he has the cha cha.
It seems like since Jeannie, Nelly, and Justina did a Latin dance in the first week, then they should dance a ballroom dance in the second week. :/
Tyra just isn’t working for the show. She doesn’t seem to know enough about these dance styles to offer her opinions on whether she thinks a dance was underscored or if the judges are “shady” in their assessments. She needs take her smize back to Top Model. The show should’ve just fired Erin and kept Tom since they only needed one host this season.
Wow – A Luther Vandross song-He’s only one of my favorite singers EVER!!! Don’t know how I feel though with a Cha Cha to “Never Too Much” but okay. Let’s go!!
Again – why do they insist on live voting? It disregards the west coast and makes it more of a popularity contest- why couldn’t Tyra make it so voting was the following week like they used to – since the results show is unfortunately not an option. I hope it’s a two night finale because that makes the freestyle also not a game changer. I wish more fans would be upset about this.
My thoughts on the songs/styles/and guesses on scores
AJ & Cheryl – Foxtrot (“Ain’t That a Kick in the Head” by Dean Martin): Great song, perfect dance style for it. My guess is (8,8,8)
Kaitlyn & Artem – Foxtrot (“I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack): This is a home run all around. My guess is (8,8,8)
Monica & Val – Jive (“Shake it off” by Taylor Swift): I have hope this will be good. But it’s Val and he kinda makes the jive all about him in my opinion. (7,7,7)
Vernon & Peta – Foxtrot (“We Found Love!” by Rihanna and Calvin Harris): This is either going to be really good or a weird song choice. My guess (7,7,7)
Anne & Keo – Foxtrot (“Counting Stars” by One Republic): This song is one of my all time favs. My guess (7,7,7)
Justina & Sasha – Rumba (“When You Believe” by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey): This is everything. Beautiful song. My guess (7,7,7)
Jeannie & Brandon – Cha Cha (“Roses” by SAINt JHN): Oh this song annoys me but it works so well for the dance style. My guess (7,7,7)
Skai & Alan – Samba to (“Miss Independent” by Neyo): Samba for this song? Weird. I’m gonna guess (8,8,8)
Johnny & Britt -Tango (“Poker Face” by Lady Gaga): This should be epic. My guess is (7,8,7)
Jesse & Sharna – Foxtrot (“Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac): This song is amazing. My guess is (7,7,7)
Nelly & Daniella- Cha Cha (“Let’s Grove” by Earth, Wind & Fire): This might be really fun. My guess (6,7,7)
Nev & Jenna – Cha Cha (“Dynamite” by BTS): I despise this song but it fits the styleperfectly. My guess is (7,7,8)
Charles & Emma – Cha Cha (“Never. Too Much” by Luther Vandross): I’m expecting a trainwreck. My guess is (4,4,4)
Chrishell & Gleb – Rumba (“This is Me” by Keala Settle & “The Greatest Showman” ensemble): Another one I don’t expect to be good and I think will start the show. My guess is (5,5,5)
Carole & Pasha – Viennese Waltz (“What’s New Pussycat” by Tom Jones): These cat puns. I live for that lol. My guess is (4,4,4)
Oh and the secret to smizing is going to blink but looking very intense lol solved.
I’m curious about the order this week, since it will be the first week the viewers vote. AJ, Kaitlyn, Skai, Nelly, and Johnny are no doubt safe, so they could throw them anywhere, and I doubt Jeannie, Justina, Jesse, Monica, Nev, and Vernon have anything to worry about. But that group, along with Charles, Anne, Chrishell, and Carole, might be interesting where they get placed. The first five I mentioned could go anywhere and be fine.
Also, since when does ABC air Monday Night Football? I heard that they were trying to get the rights for next year, but what’s so special about this week?
I know we’ll probably never know unless the show spills, but I’m curious if the live voting has effected voting patterns-are less people that aren’t in the time zones where the show is live voting blindly than before when they actually saw the performances, and is there a difference where the show is airing live?
I’m predicting people who didn’t top the leaderboard last week top it this week since they gave Skai and Justina harder styles (though I think they’ll do okay with them).
I do wish they’d given everyone the opposite of the type of dance they had last week (as in ballroom vs. Latin).
Didn’t Vernon and Peta do foxtrot last week?
Poker Face was Johnny’s big anthem on the ice about 10-12 years ago. I enjoyed watching his skating but was burned out on that song, so I’d watch Johnny’s many performances to it on mute. But I’ll leave the volume on this time.
Wondering if Carole ever dances foxtrot, if her song will be Stray Cat Strut…..
@Trent: “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” By The Tokens could be a contender too
@Kara, I think Disney/ABC/ESPN are celebrating Monday Night Football’s 50th anniversary tomorrow, so that’s why it’s being simulcast, it’s a big event. I’m pretty sure they are also testing the waters as well. ABC really wants some NFL love, so it will be interesting if DWTS eventually moves to a different night next fall if MNF comes back to ABC.
James, the west coast can vote. They just vote at 5pm instead of 8pm.
M8, I forgot about the judges determining which of the bottom two couples going home! I hope they do that again because it’s necessary to prevent another “Bobby Bones” win. Judges need to have more say in this season because voters clearly have no idea what the hell they’re doing. Bobby winning proved that.
Agreed Sandy. Yes Shaun Spicer made it a long way, but ultimately he continuously beat out two other contestants in the voting. The final four however, all had good dancers which may well have not happened without the judges save. Spicer could easily have made the final otherwise and had he made it, then god forbid what could have happened!
I just don’t know if a judges save would have prevented a Bones win, or Grocery Store Joe making the semis. We never got the actual bottom 2 then, so who knows if Bobby would have ever been in the bottom for them to vote him off (and if he was, and was against Joe, Joe would have gone). That might have given his fanbase motive to vote for him. After last season, I just don’t have faith that the judges save really did any good. I guess we’ll see this season. With a couple of exceptions, this cast is pretty good, so if the bottom 2 would be a pair like Justina vs Jeannie, or Skai vs Johnny, I think they’d have a tough time deciding.
It definitely did more good than harm Kara. We’ll never know for sure, but Spicer could have won last season without the judges save getting rid of him. That alone made it worth having for me. Better be safe than sorry.
