Derek Hough Talks Carole Baskin, DWTS and World of Dance
Sort of cross posted from PureDerekHough…excerpt is a bit different since this is a DWTS site.
This is an illuminating article from TV Line with what Derek had to say after last night’s show (excerpt below). He also says he plans to dance later in the season.
Hough told TV Insider and a small group of reporters after the show that it’s more than a bit challenging when he sees the clock ticking away with only a few seconds left and he needs to render his decision. “Carrie Ann [Inaba] was like, ‘Let me tell you why [I’m choosing who I’m choosing] and Bruno’s like, ‘Let me tell you why…’” Hough notes with a good-natured chuckle. “Then, it was, ‘Derek you have to give us an answer!’”
Fortunately, Hough, who first appeared on the show as a pro dancer in Season 5, knows the drill. “Hey, it’s my job,” he says. “I can’t complain.” Plus, he reveals, to his understanding, he won’t be the one called upon to be a potential tie-breaker each week. “It’ll trade off,” he muses, adding wryly, “but I want to thank everyone for leaving it up to me!”

“It really was the progress that [Carole] had made,” says the professional dancer of choosing the Big Cat Rescue owner, who caught himself being lost in the “beauty and grace” of Baskin’s Viennese Waltz with partner Pasha Pashkov. “I had to look at it from that perspective.”
About his development deal:
“There are already a few projects that are coming up,” he teases. “I felt like it was a right fit with ABC and Disney for things we have in mind.”
A bit more about this season of DWTS:
Hough’s in no rush for couples to leave the competition, but he is hoping there will soon be more air time for him to go into detailed critiques that will ideally help couples deliver more entertaining routines.
“There are definitely moments where I’d love to say, ‘Choreographically, try this approach,’” Hough says. “Sometimes, that will be said off-screen [but] I genuinely want to help people improve.”
Derek as we know and love him : )
It’s never about him, and he does genuinely want to help each couple improve and have a good experience. AND he has the ability to do just that, so WTF – let the man talk!
I, too, will be glad when the herd is thinned a bit so there’s more time for Derek to comment, but also for the dances to be a bit longer. Everything feels so rushed – everything except Tyrant LOL
I’m not happy that Derek saved Carole. She should have been gone the very first week
@Emi – Then I assume that you’re upset with Carrie Ann as well, as she also voted for Carole and contributed to the 2/3 majority needed to send Charles home.
I hope the dances will get longer and the judges will have more time to speak as that herd gets thinned. But I also worry that it might just free up more time for Tyra’s smize tutorials and we’ll have a night with six partners left, each doing dances that are 1 minute 15 seconds.
Heh. If Derek was THAT powerful, he could get rid of Tyrant (tm: Courtney).
Tyrant (can’t call her anything else since Courtney’s post) desperately needs some interviewing classes pronto. In particular, the interview with AJ was cringe worthy to the max, and used up A LOT of time that would have been put to better use (like giving judges time to comment)! Geesh – the man truly loves his wife and family, what else do you want him to say. I mean really – “why do you love her so much?” DUH like anyone could say in a few words why one loves someone, and how much detail to you expect him provide on live TV? This is worse even than AGT. 2020 has been a crazy-not-in-a-good-way year, so I guess Tyrant on my feel-good TV show fits that mold. Sigh ….
