Dancing with the Stars Season 29, Week 5 – Who’s Dancing What…and When??

It’s 80’s Night….and this is just ridiculous, not Rad or Tubular. From the ABC/Disney Press Release:

The show will start with a cold open with Tyra walking into the ballroom to Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know.”

Wow, what a great cold open and so very different from every other week this season. Dear lord. Tyrant is NOT the star of this show!! This is exactly what everyone was worried about when they heard she was joining the show. And since she’s executive producer, there is likely little the other producers can do about it. It’s literally vomit inducing. There are at least 25 people who are going to be on the show this week that are more talented than her (sorry CAI and Bruno, you didn’t quite make the cut…close, though, Bruno). Anyway, on to the real stars of the show and what they’re dancing.

BTW, I’m a youngster of the 80’s and Tainted Love is one of my all time favorite songs. 🙂 But WHY did they have to give it to Val? I doubt he and Monica will do it justice. Damn, also love “I think we’re alone now”…excellent and I have higher hopes for Kaitlyn and Artem doing it justice. Lot’s a tangos!! “The Power of Love” was one of those songs they played to absolute death…I think I’m still over it and cringe when I hear it. Same goes for “Total Eclipse” and “Open Arms”. The Jazz dances will be interesting because those songs are so clearly not jazzy at all; Jazz has more clearly than ever been reduced to a catch all where you can do anything you want. Ahhh…also love Tears for Fears. I suppose the producers aren’t cool enough to whip out a Squeeze song, are they? Answer: No.

ETA: AJ dancing 6th which should put him at the top of the hour. The pimpage continues…

Who Danced it Better?  Well, I don’t remember a lot of 80’s music on DWTS, but let’s look at what I could find. I could only find “Open Arms” on SCD and it’s a beautiful waltz. I don’t see AJ doing this well.

I couldn’t find anything other than a SCD group dance for “Rhythm of the Night”. Nothing at all for “I Think We’re Alone Now” or “Tainted Love” (besides a Dancesport couple). Good luck to Vernon and Peta because I’ll be shocked if they can dance to “Livin on a Prayer” as well as Shawn and Mark (subbing for an injured Derek) did during All Stars (that season that Shawn should have won and during which I don’t remember Derek being injured). This was an excellent Tango/Paso fusion.

Couldn’t find “Maniac” although I seem to recall Karina doing that whole Flashdance thing with the chair and the water. Type “dancing with the stars like a virgin” into the Youtube search box and some weird shit comes up. Like one of Sadie’s dances….the one with the duck calls. No idea. Then Derek’s appearance on Jane the Virgin…makes sense, I guess. And finally…I don’t even remember the female pros name who was always doing hairography…

“The Power of Love” I only found on SCD and I posted it here because I liked how all out they went…although it does allow a lot of time wasting, etc, that normally bugs the crap outta me on DWTS.

LOL…how could I forget little Louis Vito with Chelsie Hightower doing “Total Eclipse of the Heart”? He sold the romantic part, but Chelsie was the only once dancing full out in this one.

I could only find Lorde’s reimagining of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and, again, it was a dance that I didn’t remember and it’s quite good.

Nothing for “Take on Me”. And I wish I could unsee Team Boy Band’s take on the 80’s medley which includes “You got it (the right stuff)”. Although I appreciate Nick and Rashad’s efforts. A lot. 🙂

Well? What do you think? Who’s going to pull it off and who’s going to…not. 🙂
