PureDWTS Season 28/DWTS Juniors Season 2 Update: New Producers, Pro/Troupe Auditions, New Schedule?

After a seemingly endless period of no news, it looks like we’re finally getting some movement behind-the-scenes on season 28 of DWTS and season 2 of Juniors.  Per a source…

DWTS now has new executive producers at the helm – no idea who exactly, but apparently Ashley & Joe are out. I’m guessing we’ll be hearing more after fall up-fronts next week…

Invitation-only auditions for pro/troupe on DWTS were held last week, so we may be seeing some new faces on the show come fall.  Veteran pros did not have to re-audition.

Juniors season 2 is no-go for the summer/fall, but is tentatively being pushed to a mid-season slot – think Jan/Feb of next year, which I think is actually a perfect slot to try because most regular-season shows are on hiatus at that time.  That mid-season slot worked wonders for The Masked Singer; it could be a good vehicle for Juniors, too.

As I mentioned earlier, we’re probably going to see DWTS news pick up a bit after up-fronts next week – likely a tentative premiere date, season length, and of course, the names of the new EP’s. Thoughts? 🙂

How about Natasha Bure For Dancing with the Stars Season 28??

How about Natasha Bure For Dancing with the Stars Season 28? I think this would be a cool idea especially if she were to be paired with Mark Ballas…

Candace Cameron Bure‘s daughter Natasha Bure is following in her mother’s footsteps into acting, but the 20-year-old hopes to mimic her mother in another way as well: She wants to go on “Dancing with the Stars.”

“I would love to do ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ I think it would be the coolest thing. I’m so competitive,” Natasha told “Entertainment Tonight” (watch below).

Let us know what you think in comments. For more, see Gold Derby. Thanks to Vin for the heads up.

Rupaul’s Drag Race Finalist Courtney Act to Compete on DWTS Australia

So last week, we talked about RPDR season 8 champ Bob the Drag Queen starting a campaign to get on DWTS.  In an interesting development, RPDR season 6 runner-up Courtney Act (aka Shane Jenek) was just announced as a contestant on DWTS Australia:

Drag artist Courtney Act is set to appear on Australia’s Dancing with the Stars with a male partner.

Act, whose real name is Shane Jenek, was the final contestant to be announced in the 11-strong line-up for the celebrity-studded dance competition.

The drag queen, who made her name name on RuPaul’s Drag Race, revealed the news on Twitter and jokingly referred to her costume mishap while entering Celebrity Big Brother in January 2018, which she went on to win.

Courtney posted her promo pic on IG, which I think is pretty cute 🙂

Worth mentioning: Courtney’s no stranger to reality TV – aside from RPDR and her aforementioned win on Celebrity Big Brother UK, she also competed on the inaugural season of Australian Idol and is set to compete in the Eurovision song contest later this month. Note that they’ve got her dancing with a male pro, and there seems to be very few people getting worked up about it – I think if she does well (and she probably will), we could see DWTS here in the States taking notice and perhaps more seriously entertaining the notion of casting a drag queen for season 28. At this point, my vote’s for Ginger Minj – she was just in Dumplin’ and Super Drags, she’s got a theater and singing background, and there’s currently a bit of a grassroots campaign to get her cast as Ursula in the upcoming live action version of The Little Mermaid. She’s also short, which should eliminate a lot of the trickiness of pairing her with a male pro to dance with. But in the grand scheme of things, I’m just glad to see drag queens in the mainstream 😉

PureDWTS Season 28 Cast Rumors & Watch Out: Bob the Drag Queen Wants to Be on DWTS (POLL)

I apologize for the tardiness of this post – I was in Denver when Zoe (@ptxdwts on Twitter) pointed this out to me, and Heidi & Vogue were each tending to family business. But I’ve finally gotten a spare moment and thought we could talk about this 🙂

Last Friday night, Rupaul’s Drag Race season 8 winner Bob the Drag Queen (real name: Christopher Caldwell) tweeted out this message:

Now I vaguely remember a few drag queens joking a bit in the past about wanting to do the show, but I feel like this is the first instance where one of them actually seems serious about it.  Bob’s got a point – with the success of RPDR in the last ten years, drag queens are becoming much more well-known in the mainstream, as opposed to being considered more of a subculture/niche celebrity. They’re starring in Oscar-nominated movies (Willam and Shangela were in A Star is Born), TV events (Valentina is set to play Angel in Rent: Live this Sunday), and Netflix original content (Ginger Minj was most recently in Dumplin’, while Alyssa Edwards’ reality show Dancing Queen follows her dance school in Texas, and many of the voices in the cartoon Super Drags are former RPDR queens). Drag queens are having a moment – so perhaps it’s time for DWTS to give one a shot.  I’ve said it already, but I think season 28 is going to be a make-it-or-break-it season for this show – I think they’ve got to somehow revamp it, while also hanging onto their core fanbase. I think attitudes have changed (and continue to change), and while I’m sure there would be some obnoxiously-vocal bigots threatening to boycott the show if a drag queen was on, I think it could be cancelled out by the influx of new viewers the show could potentially get from casting a queen as famous as Bob.

Potential caveats? I assume Bob would be competing in drag, which means she’d be dancing with a male pro – and Bob is easily 6’2″-6’3″.  That’s at least as tall as Keo, our current tallest male pro, and I assume Bob would also be wearing heels.  I think it’s safe to say lifts are probably out 😛 Other than that, I can’t see too many logistical barriers…what do you guys think? I know I say this a lot anymore, but I just want to see something I haven’t seen before…so I’m all about Bob on DWTS 😉 Be sure to vote in the poll below!

UCLA Gymnast Katelyn Ohashi For Dancing with the Stars??

Interesting. Apparently, Ryan Seacrest hooked up Katelyn Ohashi (UCLA gymnast superstar) with Deena Katz, the casting director for Dancing With The Stars. In the interview, they talk of making Katelyn’s dream of dancing come true. Ryan got chills at the thought and Derek Hough also weighs in. Thanks to Linz for the heads up!

Perez Hilton Says Joey Lawrence and “A Lot of Personalities Who Have Done DWTS” Are On Celebrity Big Brother Season 2

I got so wrapped up in former DWTS celebrities doing The Masked Singer that I spaced that Celebrity Big Brother season 2 is kicking off soon…and apparently that show is also borrowing from the former DWTS contestant casting pool, per Perez Hilton:

Sources tell us that Joey Lawrence is “definitely” doing it. And he has not been on any of the spoiler lists thus far.

Joining Joey in the Celebrity Big Brother house will be a lot of personalities who have previously done Dancing With the Stars on ABC.

Given that five of the eleven celebs on CBB season 1 were DWTS alums, it’s not surprising that CBB has dipped into the DWTS pond again – especially since Deena Katz (DWTS casting director) is apparently doing casting for CBB now, too. So begins the speculation – who was on DWTS that isn’t currently up to anything and maybe might need the money/exposure? Ochocinco? Aaron Carter? T.O.? Kate Gosselin? Let’s hear your guesses…

PureDWTS Season 28 Cast Rumors & Watchout: James Hinchcliffe Thinks Fellow Indycar Driver Josef Newgarden Should Do DWTS

I’d categorize this one as “there’s a 50/50 chance between this being a complete joke and a legitimate possibility”, given the parties involved 😉

Hinch has said in multiple interviews since his time on DWTS that he’d “love to see Josef Newgarden do DWTS” – I believe he even mentioned it in a Facebook live with Sharna once, and Sharna was onboard with the idea.  Josef’s a fellow Indycar driver (a pretty successful one, too – he won the 2017 Indycar Series Championship), and is considered a sort of Indycar heartthrob – several of the drivers like to joke that he should be a Disney prince or in a boyband. He’s also a goofy guy and doesn’t seem to worry too much about “being cool”, so he’s uninhibited enough to give DWTS a shot, I think.

Well the other day Josef retweeted a gif of himself busting a move on the bricks at IMS (which was actually cropped from a YouTube video of him during the “Harlem Shake” dance craze five years ago), and this is how things went down:

Now while Josef might be kidding (or semi-kidding), I think Hinch is serious – and I think that Josef would actually be a wise casting move on ABC’s part. Charming, attractive, boyish young guy that doesn’t take himself too seriously and isn’t afraid to let loose and give himself over to the experience? That’s practically catnip to DWTS viewers these days (hello, Milo). And given that ABC has time to pin down the next cast (and reeeeallllly needs to focus on getting a quality cast to redeem themselves from the fiasco of season 27), I think they ought to look into Josef – Hinch ended up being wildly popular despite being a relative unknown headed into his season, and Josef is at least semi-well-known.

Thoughts?

PureDWTS Carrie Ann Inaba to Permanently Replace Julie Chen on The Talk?

Per Variety, it looks like Carrie Ann may be getting a new gig:

Carrie Ann Inaba is set to take over Julie Chen’s chair on “The Talk.”

Sources tell Variety that Inaba has closed a deal to join the CBS daytime chat show, and will come aboard in January. A CBS representative declined to comment for this story.

Inaba has been one of several guest hosts filling in since Chen’s departure from the daytime talker in September, which came on the heels of Chen’s husband–CBS chairman and CEO Leslie Moonves–being ousted from the company over multiple allegations of sexual harassment and assault.

Inaba joins a panel that consists of Eve, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne and Sheryl Underwood. Previous co-hosts include Marissa Jaret Winokur, Holly Robinson Peete, Leah Remini, and Aisha Tyler.

So what does this mean for DWTS? My guess is that she may see the writing on the wall and realize that DWTS is a sinking ship, and that she needs to strike while the iron is hot and slide into a more permanent (and probably lucrative) gig. I don’t see CBS sharing her, either, especially if she’s permanently contracted for The Talk. So who knows – maybe we’ll see a shakeup on the judging panel. I think they’ve got time to figure it out, given that we likely won’t see a spring season until at least April, if at all. Can’t say that I’d particularly miss her on the judging panel – she seems to be the judge most likely to effusively gush over just-ok routines and nitpick fantastic ones in order to fit an agenda.

Thoughts?

PureDWTS Cancellation Watch & POLL: Spring Season Out, DWTS Possibly Back Next Fall?

After the train wreck of this season, both Heidi & I said “well we can kiss this show goodbye.” I think we both can agree that last night’s show was the beginning of the end of DWTS, if not the actual end. So naturally, people are talking today about the future of the show. Not sure of the credibility of TVShowsCancelled.com, but they’re claiming DWTS will be back in the fall:

ABC has renewed the competition show for Season 28, although it won’t premiere in the spring, co-host Tom Bergeron has revealed.

Now here’s where I take issue, because they’re taking some of Tom’s tweets & IG comments and drawing some conclusions from them that I’m not sure we can safely make. Reading through Tom’s tweets/comments, it sounds like he’s not been given specifics, only that the show will be back “next year”. He seems doubtful that it’ll be in the spring, but is “hopeful” about the fall; perhaps its my pessimistic side talking, but I think the higher-ups could be leaving “see you next year” a bit open-ended – could be referring to Juniors (if it gets renewed), or they might just be saying that for now, and might scrap DWTS if something better comes along. Nothing seems set in stone to me, but you be the judge.

Here’s where I sit with the whole thing: I’m on the fence with skipping the spring season, as I feel like the gap between season 25 & 26 (and the shortened season 26) is partially responsible for the drop in viewership – let the viewers go too long, and they start to forget about DWTS and move onto other things. However, given that so many seem fed up with the show right now, I think it would do them well to give viewers some breathing room to start to miss the show again. I’m fine skipping spring season, as I mentioned before, because I doubt I’d have time to blog it this coming year 😉 If they are bringing DWTS back in the fall, I think they really need to focus on getting worthwhile stars that will draw viewers in, and possibly tweaking the format a bit – if there’s only going to be one season per year, a la SCD, they need to focus on quality. I’m hoping Juniors gets greenlit for another season, as I feel like that’s been a real bright spot this year – viewers seem to be enjoying it far more than they initially assumed.

UPDATE, 11/21/18, 1:06 PM EST: A source came through and said DWTS has “definitely been picked up for the fall season, according to a BBC exec at the afterparty” and “still a maybe for a shortened spring season” and “juniors is a maybe for the summer season”. Source got the impression that spring season & juniors “will probably boil down to filling a spot” – basically, if they can’t find something else, spring & juniors will get greenlit. So we may not be completely out a spring season – but if we do get one, it’ll definitely be shortened. Something to think about.

But what do you guys think? Let us know in the poll and the comments below.

PureDWTS Season 27 – DWTS Juniors Couples Announced on Sept. 25 Show

We had kinda guessed that this is how the cast announcement for Juniors would go down, but Rylee’s latest Instagram post confirmed it:

Not sure yet if all of the couples will be there to perform on the show (quite a few of the junior pros/celebs aren’t L.A. locals, so it could be a bit of a mess logistically to have them all there), but they will all get announced that day.  Of course, if you don’t want to wait, you can always check out our spoiler posts – cast list here and other spoiler-y things here 😉

UPDATE, 9/14/2018, 11:19 AM EST: Source confirms that the entire Juniors cast will be present for the announcement during the Sept. 25 show. Sounds like they might be performing.
