Dancing With The Stars Apolo Ohno Writes Of Getting Back On Track And Finding New Inspiration

Apolo Ohno has written a new blog at People.com. He says he and Karina have had some issues, but, they’ve cleared the air and feel even closer now. They are also going to treat every dance as if it’s their last. Lots more below on this past week’s struggles, their new dance and how much it means to him and Karina.

Going into this week’s competition, I told Karina, “Let’s clear the air. Let’s get back on track and find new inspiration.” We went out, we talked, we had a good time. I told her we should treat every week like it’s our last. I want to just forget about the scores and the comments, and use the criticism as constructive. I know for me, that means emotionally showing a different side that perhaps people haven’t seen.

This song is about cancer. This song has a personal connection to both Karina and me. I have to go into a very different place, all while trying to perform this dance. It’s really beautiful and really smooth. I really like it, but it’s really emotional. I’m inviting kids from the City of Hope who have gone through or are going through cancer treatments, so I hope they enjoy it.

We just have this whole new approach and we’ve been kicking each other’s ass in the studio. It’s awesome. We’ve been hitting it hard every single day. I’m happy with the dance. We’re just continuing to keep polishing.

Be sure to read the full blog at People.com. It’s a good one! I hope he and Karina give new meaning to the word “connection” and make all the nay sayers eat their words.

DWTS Season 15, Week 5 – Dancing by the Numbers

This week, this particular post doesn’t mean a hill of beans because, as I’m sure you’ve all figured out by now, there was no elimination. But I’ve had a few requests for it so you can see how your favorites are doing. EVERYTHING could change on Monday night and I have some confidence that it will. I predict Sabrina stays in first place to get her past this particular week – and maybe past the following week. I think that Kirstie and Kelly – and maybe Melissa – are the next designated people who are considered disposable by the producers/judges.

Yes. Heidi is having a very cynical week. 🙂

Anyway, let’s take a look at the numbers for this week:

The Judges Scores and Percentages

Oh dear, everyone favorite over the top showmance which gets more forced by the day is in serious trouble. At least, this week. You’ll notice that everyone but Kirstie has at least a percentage point lead on her. That translates to more votes than I would be comfortable with if I were them – roughly 10,000. What does Kelly have to do to stick around beyond this pretend elimination week? ONE of the following:

–          Kelly needs to get 2,250 more votes per million votes cast than Kirstie, OR;

–           Kelly needs to get 10,150 more votes per million votes cast than Emmitt, OR;

–          Kelly needs to get 11,250 more votes per million votes cast than Shawn, Apolo, Melissa or Gilles, OR;

–          Kelly needs to get 15,750 more votes per million votes cast than Sabrina.

Kelly has been relatively protected up to now by people with either much lower scores or fanbase issues of their own. But that protection is largely gone this week. Lots of people would be tempted to say that Kirstie is going to go because she was in the bottom two last week with Bristol. But Kirstie beat the spread on Bristol that was about three times the spread between her and Kelly. This is the part of the all star season where it gets really hard, cuz I’m really not sure if Kelly’s got juice or not. I’m inclined to say “not” – when compared to Kirstie. And I don’t think there is anyone else she can catch. Don’t give me crap about Soap fanbases – soaps are being cancelled left and right. Not to mention that it’s all relative – someone has to go, so you have to consider if other fanbases are bigger or more passionate.

But let’s assume that Kelly finds a miraculous way to safety. What does Kirstie needs need in order to stick around??  She needs ONE of the following:

–          Kirstie needs to get 7,900 more votes per million votes cast than Emmitt, OR;

–          Kirstie needs to get 11,250 more votes per million votes cast than Shawn, Apolo, Melissa or Gilles, OR;

–          Kirstie needs to get 13,500 more votes per million votes cast than Sabrina.

Based on those numbers, if there was an elimination this week I think it easily comes down to Kelly and Kirstie. I think the only other two people in potential danger would be Melissa and Sabrina – but the margins are too great this week. I think. We won’t really know until it happens. The path forward from here is really not clear. Emmitt has been fading into the woodwork lately, so it’s possible he’s in the lower tier as well.

But, when asked to make a guess, my guess is that Kelly would go home. If not her, Kirstie. Next week, we add a ton of points and everything can change. In any case, you can be sure the margins get smaller.

DWTS Judge Carrie Anne Inaba Talks Of Chemistry Some More On KTLA (Video)

Judge Carrie Ann Inaba went on KTLA today to discuss the fall from her chair on Dancing With The Stars this past week. She also discussed some of the contestants “chemistry”. She says Gilles and Peta could win the competition because of their chemistry, sexiness, etc.. She also says Derek and Shawn have a “chemistry” in a different “electrifying” and “magical” way. She also goes on again about Karina and Apolo and how they lack chemistry and how they haven’t found their “common point” yet. She ends the interview talking about her pet causes and how she’s auctioning two tickets for the Dancing With The Stars finale. More in detail below.

The Costumes And Make-up: Who had the best look for DWTS 15 Week 5?

The Dancing With The Stars Make-up Team has released some behind the scenes photos of the cast getting ready for the shows this past week. Above is Shawn Johnson, Karina Smirnoff, and Peta Murgatroyd. To see more pics of the cast, see Dancing With The Stars Make-up’s official facebook page. I always enjoy the close-up of their EYES and how they do their make-up.

As for the costumes, who did you think had the prettiest or coolest costumes this week? I think I loved Kirstie’s long black flowing dress the most. But, what about Shawn and Derek? They looked stunning. I also liked Kelly’s 80’s vibe black corset dress and jewelry. I loved Karina’s red dress as well. She talked of how she designed it at Instyle.

“When I designed the costume, I wanted it to look like a silk nightgown,” Smirnoff told InStyle.com. “I wanted to match the dress, the hair and the makeup to what the song and dance make you feel—fun and sexy with some funk and sass! It was such a great, soft and seductive look—I loved it!”

It was perfect and I liked the red with Apolo’s leopard shirt. Let us know what you think in comments.

Shirley Ballas, Louis Van Amstel, And Sabrina Bryan Critique Dancing With The Stars Week 5’s Dances

Dancing champion Shirley Ballas was a guest on After Buzz to critique this past week’s dances from a “professional” perspective. As some of you pointed out in comments, she feels much like we do. For starters, she felt Tony and Melissa’s individual dance could have used more difficult choreography, passion, and chemistry. Louis Van Amstel and Sabrina were interviewed and joined in to critique the dances as well from a “dancing” perspective. Louis thinks Tony should push Melissa more too. As for Derek and Shawn, Shirley says Derek is “creative beyond belief”, but, he and Shawn’s dance missed a few technical elements. She has some choice words to describe Gilles Marini which aren’t far from our own this season. He’s too “self absorbed” and not as “sincere” in his dancing like he should be. Lots more below on each couple including Shirley’s thoughts on who she thinks will be in the Finale: Shawn and Derek, Louis and Sabrina, Emmitt and Cheryl, or possibly Apolo and Karina if they can get their chemistry in check. This interview is 45 minutes long, but, so well worth a listen when you get a chance. Let us know what you think and if you agree with Shirley? Can I just say? SHIRLEY SHOULD BE A JUDGE! I’d love to see her more involved with the show every week somehow and even possibly replace Carrie Anne!! Can you imagine?

DWTS2012 Karina Smirnoff Talks Of Chemistry With Apolo Ohno, Next Week’s Dance, and More

A couple of news items on Karina Smirnoof and Apolo Ohno!! First, TV Yahoo caught up with Karina to ask her about she and Apolo’s Samba. She defends their chemistry for what judge Carrie Ann Inaba said they need to work on.

So now we know what Apolo Ohno sings to in the shower! The Olympic speed skater picked the Rick James classic “Give It To Me Baby” to show off his samba skills with Karina, but judge Carrie Ann Inaba told the dancing duo that they need to work on their chemistry.

While Karina admitted that chemistry can be hard to maintain constantly while dancing together day in and day out, she felt that on the stage, their chemistry was in tact. Mostly, though, she was blown away by how Apolo mastered the challenging moves: “The fact that Len gave us a 9.5, and he’s one of the toughest judges ever — he recognized the difficulty of the routine, the technique, and the execution. Apolo’s hips moved so much in this dance. I thought he had battery-operated equipment in there! Can we keep them?!”

As for the sex appeal that Len and Bruno felt? Karina said laughing, “It’s Rick James! This whole week Apolo was so funny — in the middle of dancing, he’d be like, ‘I wanna love you, baby.'” Sounds like the chemistry was bubbling over for these two!

I agree! I think Karina and Apolo’s chemistry is off the hook!

Karina also dished on last week’s Hip Hop Paso Doble. She also had a few words to say on the team Dance this week which you can read all about at the link. Below is what Karina said about their upcoming dance for Country week…

Next week is Country Week on “DWTS.” So will Karina and Apolo trade in their ’70s polyester for cowboy hats? Not exactly. They will be taking a more personal and touching country route with a Viennese Waltz.
“I love country. Half of my iPod music is country,” Karina said. “I knew the song I wanted to use. Once I presented the song to Apolo, he told me a personal story. Also, I lost my dear grandmother and grandfather to cancer, so our song is not going to be all laughter, but it’s going to be incredibly sentimental, romantic.”

So get ready, because the pint-size dancing pro can’t wait until next week: “The best thing for me is to have a song and a dance that I actually love. The creative process is so much sweeter.”

I love these two! I can’t wait to see what they’ll bring to the table again.

Secondly, below the pair are interviewed by Young Hollywood. Karina explains what it’s like have an Olympian and her first athlete as a partner. Apolo explains what the differences are like between training for dancing and training for a marathon. They also have some mutual friends and get their Gangnam groove on at the end. Too fun!

Thanks to Court for the help with this post! xxx

PureDWTS POLL: Team Gangnam or Team Call Me Maybe? Which was the best? VOTE

Annie Barrett of EW wrote up a piece on Dancing With The Stars last night! She’s a hoot always and seems to always voice what the fans generally think without minsing words. Did she do the same again? Read on to see….

Congrats to Team ‘Gangnam Style’ — a.k.a. American Psy — for delivering what was in many ways the best and worst group dance Planet Mirrorballus has ever seen. Mostly worst! It was the best if you love tepid messes and things that make no sense, which obviously I do because it’s season 15 and I’m still sitting here in my fringed boots typing about an alternate universe. Like Kelly Monaco said, “Sometimes… trainwrecks are fun to watch.”

Somehow this group f(l)ail earned Kelly, Kirstie, Emmitt, and Not-At-All-Powerful Captain Gilles three 9s, probably because if the judges had scored it fairly the entire leaderboard would have been messed up. I’m fine with that. I might even award them all 9s myself provided I’d never have to see Gilles peering into Peta’s crotch, Kirstie and Maks’ “mat exercises,” and Bruno sniffing O Captain His Captain’s lointowel ever, ever again. EWWWW.com.

LOL! She’s too funny!! I still can’t believe the judges would give Team Gangham “9’s”? 😕

So, we’re curious on some Poll numbers for the fans favorite TEAM DANCE? No, Polls aren’t always accurate, but, our Polls at PureDWTS seem to be pretty close. So, what do you think: Team Gangnam or Team Call Me Maybe? Which Team Dance did you think was the best this week? Note: this isn’t a Poll for who your favorite dancers are. Try to keep them out of it and only vote on the dances themselves? If you need to watch or relive the dances again, you can do so at the end of this post!

Thanks so much for your vote! Be sure to tell us how you voted in comments too if you like!

DWTS 15, Week 5 Power Rankings – Part II

So now that we’ve seen everybody dance both their team dance & individual dance, I can finally start to get a snapshot of where things stand heading into week 6.  As I promised in part I, I’ve really just taken my commentary on last night’s dances, copied & pasted it here, and added any additional notes I found pertinent to go along with my commentary on tonight’s dances.  I know many of you have already read the spoilers we posted last night for tonight’s show, so there aren’t probably any huge revelations for you; for those that haven’t, I doubt there are any huge revelations for you, either…it became pretty clear to me that they put the stronger individual performances on Tuesday night and the weaker ones on Monday night, perhaps in an effort to increase viewership for Tuesday night’s show.  As for the team dance – I think you guys can probably guess where I stand 😉 And the other thing that became quite evident after tonight? They are really doing their damndest to protect Gilles and ensure he sticks around.  Gilles gets the high score of night 1; 3 of the 4 couples on night 2 get the same (2.5 points lower than Gilles’) score, and the one person that even comes close still falls .5 points short of Gilles, despite dancing one of the most beautiful waltzes I’ve ever seen on the show.  The message is clear: protect the whiny, egotistical Frenchmen at all costs.  Gag me.

Speaking of week 6 – it is country week, and each couple is doing an individual unlearned dance and a group dance.  The group dance will not be scored, except the couple that does the move that impresses the judges the most will get two bonus points – which is practically nothing, in the great scheme of things, since we’re taking all of the points from this week and all of the points from next week and adding them together.  It’s gonna be a fanbase battle royale…hope you guys voted hard!

1.) Sabrina & Louis – I was skeptical about Sabrina being able to carry off such a soft, romantic dance, since she seems to hit everything so hard – but this was actually quite lovely.  She showed a lot of control and some of her lines were just beautiful – at a couple moments, I honestly thought she would fit right in on a dance floor filled with American Smooth professionals.  I even believed adoring looks she was giving Louis – and while I agree that vulnerability may not be Sabrina’s strong suit, I thought she absolutely showed it tonight in this waltz.  Funny how you call her out on it, Carrie Ann, and then give her a 10 anyway.  If you aren’t gonna nut up, then you gots to SHUT UP.  Loved the theme, loved the choreography, loved the execution – and love that someone from Team Call Me Maybe was able to give Gilles a run for his money in the individual dance round 🙂

2.) Gilles & Peta – Well, guess I can’t really get too mad at the overscoring of this one, since it’s kind of become par for the course this season.  I actually thought Gilles had some really nice lines in this rumba – he was actually extending both his arms and his legs nicely.  But my big problem was that I still felt like Peta was doing all the work…and it got a little repetitive.  To concur with Len, I got tired of the leg extensions and displays of flexibility really quickly, and it seemed to slow everything down just a little too much.  It was a time-waster in an already shortened routine.  It seemed like the first part (the a cappella part) was nice, and then once the crescendo hit with the instruments it was all overwrought emotion from there on out.  I would have probably given it a 28, tops, because I felt like there just wasn’t as much content as there should have been.  29.5 is an awfully cushy score. Adding in after Tuesday night’s show: I wasn’t so upset about this score last night, but now I am, considering that Shawn & Derek did what I would consider to be a FAR superior rumba, both in terms of technique & performance, got reamed by the judges, and ended up 2.5 points less than Gilles.  The pimping is obvious now, and TPTB (and Gilles himself) seem hellbent on changing the name of the show to “Dancing with Gilles Marini!…and some other people”.  But I do feel a bit vindicated knowing that Gilles’ magnum opus of a team freestyle got called out for being a ridiculous mess and got 2.5 points less than Team Call Me Maybe…that really must chap his ass, as does the fact that Sabrina is now at the top of the leaderboard 😉 Read more..

Dancing With The Stars 15 Week 5 Dancer Confessionals Released By ABC

These are always fun and this one is no different!

ADDING: And here is Part 2. Karina and Apolo are sad when they shouldn’t be:

Dancing With The Stars Carrie Ann Inaba Wants Apolo Ohno To Turn It Up A Notch and More

Carrie Ann Inaba writes about the tumble out of her seat on Dancing With The Stars at Ladies Home Journal. Last night wasn’t the first time she fell. Also, she chats on the dancing this week. In particular, she mentions Apolo Ohno and how she wants to see him step it up a notch. Read this through for more and let us know what you think.

Speaking of which, the cause is dancing! Don’t forget to tune in tonight because there are five more dances to see. Last night’s dances were pretty darn good—I especially loved the group number. I found the choreography to be quite dynamic and exciting. The transitions from couple to couple were really innovative and they left no moment of that routine unfinished. There were no throw away moves in the high-pitched choreography. High energy and high impact!

I think Apolo and Karina need to turn it up a notch tonight and add more difficulty into their choreography. I don’t think Apolo is being physically or mentally challenged enough with Karina’s choreography and he’s such an amazing athlete. Sure, he’s sexy, but you can’t play that card in every routine, especially when he’s got such incredible talents outside of that. Look at Shawn Johnson’s routines—she uses every trick she possibly can to make her routines better and she’s pushing her limits all the time. That’s what is exciting and Apolo should have that same approach. He’s got to pull out the big guns from here on out if he wants a breakthrough. He’s the only one of our celebrities left (besides Kirstie) who hasn’t been on the top of the leaderboard yet. But let’s see how everyone does tonight. Tune in to see what happens in the “Gangnam Style” group dance!

HUH? Apolo hasn’t just pushed the “sexy” card every week? Is she watching the same show as the rest of us? I admit..his dance last week wasn’t as good, but, I blamed the hip hop theme. Plus, even sick with a stomach bug last night, Apolo still brought it last night during the team dance. Geez, let’s see her dance while being sick.
