PureDWTS Season 19, Week 3 – A Brief Rant on “Movie Week” Issues

Since Heidi’s “Who’s Dancing What?” post is getting a tad long, I thought I had better move this over to its own post and open the floor a bit more for discussion šŸ™‚ So as of yesterday, we received intel that Janel & Val had switched songs – they were no longer dancing to “I Feel Pretty”, and had been seen rehearsing to “America” instead.Ā  At the time, we didn’t have an explanation as to why; but now, with some additional intel, I feel as though a bit of a rant is in order…

…but first, an explanation of what I like to call West Side Storygate.Ā  As of Monday, we had heard that SOMEONE was dancing a Viennese waltz to “I Feel Pretty”; based on hints Derek gave during the show, we assumed it was Bethany & Derek.Ā  However, Val actually confirmed in a post-show interview that it was he & Janel, and that he had requested the dance style be changed from Viennese waltz to jazz “in order to do the movie justice”.Ā  Apparently he actually choreographed a pretty cool routine that was reminiscent of the big dance at the gym in the movie – the troupe was involved, they were going to have a big dance set, the works.Ā  However, apparently later in the week (I guess Tuesday or Wednesday), the studio that owns the rights to the movie allegedly said “Whoa, hey, time out there, chief – you can use ‘I Feel Pretty’, but the dance can’t look anything like the movie!” So basically, kind of the same thing that happened to Derek in season 15, when he & Shawn were tasked with doing a Knightrider-themed bhangra…but were not legally allowed to use any elements from Knightrider.Ā  A tough row to hoe for any pro, methinks.Ā  So Val basically had to redo the entire thing – they switched songs, changed the set, omitted the troupe, and redid most of the choreography.Ā  Janel picks up choreography quickly and should PROBABLY be ok in time for the show, but Val was (understandably) upset.Ā  Which brings me to my rant…

…WHY WEREN’T ALL THE RIGHTS TO THE SONGS AND MOVIES BEING USED CLEARED PRIOR TO THIS WEEK???!!! Seems like several couples were still waiting to see what their music and dance styles would be as of Monday evening – that’s gotta be a tad stressful for the pros, who then have to scramble to adapt to themes, music, and dance styles thrown at them at the last minute.Ā  Seems like they haven’t had this problem so much in previous season that have done a “movie week” theme – maybe we just didn’t hear about them, but I’m wondering if perhaps RobĀ  & Co. have tried to be a bit too accommodating to the celebs this season, and let them suggest the movies they want to dance to….and that’s resulted in some time crunches & movie/music clearance issues.Ā  Remember, the added complication of “movie week” clearances is that you have to clear both the song AND the theme rights to the movie – and the latter category is where we encounter most of the issues.Ā  So anywho – what are you guys’ thoughts as viewers? Would you mind seeing a dance using a song from a certain movie that really wasn’t at all reminiscent of that particular movie? Is there any benefit to letting the celebs pick what movies they want? Do we really need movie week at all? Let’s hear it šŸ™‚

And because I’m not a total Crabby McCrabberpants…here’s a pic of Witney holding Alfonso’s adorable son.Ā  Because ADORABLE BABIES, dammit. šŸ˜‰

DWTS 15 End-of-Season Awards: Which Dance Was the Worst?

And the fun continues…

Ā worst15

Write-ins:

Gilles & Peta’s Bollywood – 3

Bristol & Mark’s cha-cha – 2

Shawn & Derek’s non-samba samba – 2

Kirstie & Maks’ paso doble trio – 1

Shawn & Derek’s bhangra – 1

Gilles & Peta’s cha-cha – 1

Melissa & Tony’s freestyle – 1

SabrinaĀ & Louis’ paso doble – 1

Shawn & Derek’s rumba – 1

Kelly & Val’s contemporary – 1

Courtney: This is all I’ll say about the write-ins: it’sĀ obvious when someone is writing in a certain danceĀ simply out of spite, or just toĀ try to get a reaction out of people.Ā  How very puerile of them šŸ™‚ Was Pam & Tristan’s cha-cha a bizarre, fumbly train wreck? Yeah, but I almost think it’s unfair to even count first week dances…because they’re the ones with the highest potential to look like crap.Ā  I usually find myself more turned off by bad dances that occur later on in the season – because by that point, you can’t cite “first week jitters” as a reason to f*ck up.Ā  For that reason, I actually think I choseĀ Gangnam Style – I hated that dance because it was a cop-out.Ā  They basically got a free pass to do ANYTHING they wanted – they could have put a completely unique spin on it, thrown in some cool tricks & lifts, and incorporated some ballroom steps to please Len.Ā  Instead, it was as if they said “Y’know what? Let’s just copy the video, add some additional raunch, and call it a day.” Was it fun? Sure.Ā  But IĀ can think a dance is fun and also think it’s terrible. Case in point? Carson & Anna’s pirate Viennese waltz in season 13.Ā  Amusing in a trainwreck fashion, but I definitely wouldn’t say it was my favorite of that season…or even that week, and it wasĀ still a complete mess.Ā I think my second choice was Bristol & Mark’s quickstep, because it just ended up being a complete mess, both in terms of choreography & execution.Ā  Not sure what to make of the surfer flamenco – I guess I would categorize that one as a “cop-out” as well, since it seemed like they said “Welp, we don’t know any flamenco, so let’s do paso in skimpy swimsuits and hope nobody notices!”

Heidi: Courtney!! How dare you say that people write in comments just out of spite!! That NEVER happens here!! Well, okay, only every other day. šŸ˜‰ Totally agree with you that I wouldn’t look at first week dances and cry out “worst dance ever!!” So many of them DO look like crap in the first week. Anyway, when I looked at this category two dances immediately came to mind – Team Gangnam Style and Gilles’ Bollywood nightmare. Ā Team Gangnam style just disgusted me because they didn’t even TRY. Any actual dancing that was included was sloppy and disjointed – I seem to recall thinking that Emmett was the only standout from that mess. Ā Pretty sure that’s the one I voted for…although I could have written in Gilles. šŸ™‚

Vogue: When I saw this poll, I almost voted for the Team Gangnam dance as the Worst dance. I remember thinking it was just awful comparted to Team Call Me Maybe’s dance which was so well executed, choreographed and full of creative content. In the end though, I voted for Val and Kelly’s Surfer Flamenco (what an awful combination) as that dance beat them all as worst dance ever in all of the seasons of Dancing With The Stars PUT TOGETHER! šŸ˜Æ

DWTS 15: Why I Hated the All-Star Season

Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated…much to the chagrin of my detractors šŸ˜‰

Yes, I am back, after a rather prolonged post-season 15 hiatus. Part of it was due to a hectic year-end at work, part of it was due to other stuff, and part of it had to do with what I’m about to elaborate on in this post. Thanks to everyone who checked in on me on Twitter, and I can assure you I’m back full-time now šŸ™‚

Many of you have noticed that I tend to take a bit of a break from Pure after the end of each season – mainly due to the level of burnout we all seem to reach after being in full-on DWTS mode for 3 months straight while we’re covering each season. Generally, I just need a break – some time to appreciate other things in my life besides DWTS – and I’m back after a week or two. This time, though, I had a harder time getting back into the swing of being excited and inspired to write about DWTS – and for awhile, I couldn’t figure out why. Then I had a revelation…

…I HATED THE ALL-STAR SEASON.

There, I said it. I hated the all-star season, and I think it has now surpassed season 9 as my least favorite season of DWTS EVER. Reflecting on this past season, aside from a few standout performances (and all the great interactions I had with Pure readers :-)), I was hard-pressed to really feel nostalgic and pleased about it. In fact, what I tended to remember the most was all the frustration, chaos, and general feelings of “WTF is going on???” that I had while watching and blogging from week to week – and when I really got to thinking about it, I found that there were 5 key problems that left me feeling totally turned-off the all-star season. Without further ado, I give you those reasons… Read more..

DWTS 15, Week 9 – Power Rankings

Well, if youā€™re reading this, it means enough people FINALLY stopped hitting ā€œrefreshā€ on the homepage that I could get logged into the dash and actually get these postedĀ šŸ˜› And with the way things are going, things might not calm down until Tuesday morningā€¦so if this is late, sorry, but we got hit with too much traffic and my pleas for people to scale back the traffic on Twitter went unanswered.Ā  Cā€™est la vie.

Maybe Iā€™m just tired andĀ apathetic from a full day of Thanksgiving grocery shopping and house cleaning, but Iā€™m feeling a bit blasĆ© about tonight ā€“ a few standout performances that I enjoyed, but overall, nothing too surprising, and I think things played out the way they should haveā€¦and as we suspected, the judges finally got real and managed to call certain couples out on the crap theyā€™ve been getting away with for the past several weeks, and couples that have been putting in the effort finally got the love they deserved. Letā€™s get on with it, shall we?

1.) Shawn & Derek – In quite possibly the biggest surprise of the night for me, I actually ended up enjoying their Knight Rider bhangra the most out of any dance I saw tonight! Judging from some of the frustrated tweets we were seeing from the usually-unflappable Derek this weekend, I was fully prepared for this to be a hot mess ā€“ but it actually was the most high-energy, in-synch, and entertaining routine for me tonight.Ā  I think the speed of it was what really impressed me ā€“ they were both moving so fast, and doing such intricate steps, and were still somehow staying almost perfectly in synch.Ā  And the most amusing aspect? Shawn actually seemed to dance it better than Derek! šŸ˜› I also thought they managed to put that hideous Bollywood routine that Gilles & Peta did to shame, which was another perk šŸ˜‰ Overall, I think they handled the wacky danceĀ  theme challenge the best of the five couples.Ā  Moving onto their Argentine tango ā€“ another technically flawless dance.Ā  Shawnā€™s feet & legs were sharp and precise, which was the main complaint I had about Melissaā€™s dance ā€“ but I do agree a bit with Carrie Ann (and those words literally hurt my mouth) that Shawn & Derek had a little bit of a disconnect with the emotion of the dance.Ā  HOWEVER ā€“ this is something for which I really have to blame the music.Ā  ā€œBadā€ is a great song, but maybe not a great song for an Argentine tango ā€“ itā€™s a song about a guy asserting his authority and masculinity, and heā€™s doing it in a cheeky way.Ā  Itā€™s not about passion or the thrill of the chase between a man and a womanā€¦so I feel like if they had actually gone the smoldery route, it would have looked a little odd and out of place given the music.Ā  I also thought Derek did a slightly better job of really accenting the music with his choreography than Tony did.Ā  When it came to the two Argentine tangos we saw tonight, Melissa may have had more of an emotional connection, but I thought Shawn had the better technique.Ā  I thought they should have gotten the same score ā€“ either downgrade Melissa a point or upgrade Shawn a point, whichever.Ā  In the end, I think they may be the only couple that is a lock for the finaleā€¦at least I hope.

2.) Apolo & Karina – HALLELUJAH!!! They finally got the praise they deserve for their chemistry.Ā  Loved their rumba ā€“ I thought it was the perfect combination of good choreography and good emotion, and Apolo just NAILED the technique.Ā  And for those who poo-pooh “Man in the Mirror” as a rumba song – I think they injected far more romance into that rumba than Kelly & Val did with a song that was far more outwardly romantic.Ā  Then there was the “Big Top Jazz” – sigh.Ā  It wasn’t perfect – I agree that there were a few stumbles, and it felt a little frantic at times.Ā  But I really don’t think it was nearly as bad as the judges (Carrie Ann in particular) were making it sound – the degree of difficulty was much higher than Kelly’s flamenco or Emmitt’s Lindy hop, and possibly even Melissa’s hustle, and I still think he managed to stay far more in-synch than both Kelly & Emmitt.Ā  I also thought the lifts were amazing, and didn’t know what Carrie Ann was talking about, claiming they were clunky – I actually think Apolo could give Tony a run for his money, and I’ve always said that Tony is the best lifter we’ve ever seen on the show (and Julianne the best liftee).Ā  Was it his best dance? No.Ā  Did I enjoy it? Somewhat.Ā  But hopefully it’s just a minor, mediocre hiccup in an otherwise pretty damn strong season.Ā  I think Apolo is the strongest guy left, and deserves to be in the finale – and I feel a little bit better knowing he’s got a 3-point lead over Emmitt & Kelly, even if it doesn’t equal out to a huge margin.Ā  I do think he’s getting a decent amount of votes – both from loyal voters who’ve gotten pissed at his low-balling this season, and possibly from the voters who go for the “hot guy”…now that Gilles is gone, at least some of them must be impressionable enough to toss a few votes Apolo’s way šŸ˜‰ Perhaps I’m being optimistic there, but while I wouldn’t necessarily put money on Apolo making it through to the finale next week, I would say I’m at least 76% confident he will.Ā  I think the judges do realize he’s one of the strongest dancers left, and probably want him in the finale…hopefully America agrees.
