Derek Hough Talks Carole Baskin, DWTS and World of Dance

Sort of cross posted from PureDerekHough…excerpt is a bit different since this is a DWTS site.

This is an illuminating article from TV Line with what Derek had to say after last night’s show (excerpt below). He also says he plans to dance later in the season.

Hough told TV Insider and a small group of reporters after the show that it’s more than a bit challenging when he sees the clock ticking away with only a few seconds left and he needs to render his decision. “Carrie Ann [Inaba] was like, ‘Let me tell you why [I’m choosing who I’m choosing] and Bruno’s like, ‘Let me tell you why…’” Hough notes with a good-natured chuckle. “Then, it was, ‘Derek you have to give us an answer!’”

Fortunately, Hough, who first appeared on the show as a pro dancer in Season 5, knows the drill. “Hey, it’s my job,” he says. “I can’t complain.” Plus, he reveals, to his understanding, he won’t be the one called upon to be a potential tie-breaker each week. “It’ll trade off,” he muses, adding wryly, “but I want to thank everyone for leaving it up to me!”

—-

“It really was the progress that [Carole] had made,” says the professional dancer of choosing the Big Cat Rescue owner, who caught himself being lost in the “beauty and grace” of Baskin’s Viennese Waltz with partner Pasha Pashkov. “I had to look at it from that perspective.”

About his development deal:

“There are already a few projects that are coming up,” he teases. “I felt like it was a right fit with ABC and Disney for things we have in mind.”

A bit more about this season of DWTS:

Hough’s in no rush for couples to leave the competition, but he is hoping there will soon be more air time for him to go into detailed critiques that will ideally help couples deliver more entertaining routines.

“There are definitely moments where I’d love to say, ‘Choreographically, try this approach,’” Hough says. “Sometimes, that will be said off-screen [but] I genuinely want to help people improve.”

PureDWTS Season 29, Week 2 – Power Rankings

Welcome to “Dancing with Tyra Banks! And 15 Other Famous People But Mainly TYRA BANKS!!! Did We Mention TYRA BANKS??? WE ARE CONTRACTUALLY OBLIGATED TO SAY HER NAME AT LEAST 50 TIMES PER SHOW, SEND HELP!”

For anyone still able to hold onto the notion that Tyra “is doing better than we thought she would”, I admire your optimism, but I’m completely over her after only 2 weeks. Every time she asks an awkward (and usually frivolous) question after a couple gets their judges’ critiques (which are cut woefully short), or we have to hear her make every interaction about herself in some way, or we’re forced to witness her awkward attempt at humor in the “smizing” cold open, I just think to myself “Tom Bergeron would have never stooped to this level, and he could have gracefully hosted this show with a blindfold on and his hands tied behind his back…and it would still be better than this drivel!” Erin would have been worlds better than this as well…and Samantha Harris…and even one-and-done host Lisa Canning. About the only previous host Tyra has beat is Brooke Burke-Charvet, owing to the fact that Brooke wasn’t much more than a barely-sentient (but very pretty) potato. At least Tyra has a certain trainwreck appeal that makes her somewhat entertaining to watch…

…so with the new(ish) voting format, as Heidi mentioned, we’ve kind of discovered that it may actually be more beneficial for a couple to dance in the first hour of the show (as opposed to the second); I don’t think it was a coincidence that they seemed to front-load the show this week with most of the good dancers (Nev, Skai, Johnny, Justina, AJ) and left more of the weaker dancers in the back half (Charles, Carol, Chrishell, Vernon, Anne). And I don’t think the order in which the couples were called “safe” from elimination was a coincidence, either, despite Tyra insisting that the couples were “in no particular order”; the earliest ones called safe (Kaitlyn, Justina, AJ, Johnny) are the ones I think the majority of us assumed would be the safest, and the last three standing (Chrishell, Carol, and Charles) were the three most of us had in the danger zone.  I find the fact that Skai was one of the last four standing to possibly be a bit of a warning shot – I’m wondering if she’s dealing with Disney Kid Syndrome(TM) and is struggling with votes.

Other noteworthy stuff? On the negative end, I’m not sure the cameras panning to the couples sitting in their socially-distanced balconies after watching another couple dance is a good thing – more often than not, the couples were either making strange (potentially shady?) faces, or were messing with their phones; at least once, the camera panned to an empty balcony for a few beats. On the positive end, we are getting to experience the saucy troll side of Derek – the passive aggressive “Good job! That’s all I have time to say!” to Jesse after being rushed along from giving a critique by Tyrant (I’ve decided it’s her new name, y’all, since she’s the airtime hoarder) was SENDING me, as was this Carrie-Ann trolling TiK ToK he posted the other day that has inspired me to resurrect my long-marinating “lift policing” post for later this week 😉 Seriously, I cannot wait to see what other sassy comedic GOLD this arrangement sends our way – this is what happens when you hire the most decorated former pro in DWTS history to judge, after he’s had a successful run judging another more high-profile show on a rival network and he has absolutely NOTHING to lose by being a bit of a little shit 😉

@derekhoughShe’s a stickler for lifts @dancingabc♬ original sound – Tucky

So we lost Charles & Emma, which wasn’t terribly surprising – I think most of us had Carole and Charles as our bottom two; really and truly, as much as everyone seems to want Carole gone, I do think the right decision was made – I thought Carole was slightly better than Charles both weeks. Charles, bless him, I just don’t think he was going to improve much more this season. Sweet man, sweet partnership with Emma…but just not meant to go the distance. Read more..

Dancing With The Stars 29 Week Two – Interviews, Recaps, Scores, One Disney Dance Reveal, And Extras

ETA2: More interviews added below, a report on Tom, and more critiques on Tyra.

ETA: More interviews added below. Keep checking back.

Another week down, but, is it just me? Everything feels so rushed and the dances feel so short? For instance, the creativity and story of Johnny and Britt’s dance was just getting started and then it ended. It seemed like the case for most everyone. And poor Derek Hough having to cut several of his critiques. It didn’t seem fair, but, my faves of the night: AJ and Cheryl, Nev & Jenna, Justina & Sasha, and Jesse & Sharna. I’m not giving up on Johnny & Britt yet, but, I really hope they start wowing us soon. Same with Peta & Vernon who I really like too.

Ok, so let’s check out the scores from last night in order….

Skai & Alan 21 (7, 7, 7)
Justina & Sasha 21 (7, 7, 7)
Kaitlyn & Artem 20 (6, 7, 7)
Nev & Jenna 20 (7, 7, 6)
Johnny & Britt 18 (6, 6, 6)
Jeannie & Brandon 18 (6, 6, 6)
Jesse & Sharna 18 (6, 6, 6)
Anne & Keo 18 (6, 6, 6)
AJ & Cheryl 18 (6, 6, 6)
Vernon & Peta 17 (5, 6, 6)
Nelly & Daniella 16 (5, 5, 6)
Chrishell & Gleb 13 (4, 5, 4)
Charles & Emma 12 (4, 4, 4)
Carole & Pasha 11 (4, 4, 3)

If you missed seeing the dances, see the official You Tube page. You can see photos from the show at Getty Images.

And now onto some interviews and recaps. Don’t forget next week is Disney Night. Johnny tells us at twitter that he will be performing to “Reflection” from Disney’s “Mulan”
by his idol, Christina Aguilera.

Dancing with the Stars Season 29, Week 2 – LIVE BLOG

Okay, so tonight I’m going to attempt to do what I did last season and that is combine the live blog with Dancing by the Numbers. TRY. 🙂  It ain’t easy, that’s for sure,  and I’m rusty….but I think I can pull it off thanks to my handy spreadsheet.  It will be tough with 15 couples, but let’s give it  a shot!!

T-minus 30 minutes…

A note about the numbers…to calculate more accurate numbers, I started with everyone getting the same score this week as they got last week in order to get the total number of points closer to reality. As the show goes along, I will input the correct score which likely won’t change the overall points by overly much. Using this method, right now, only 3,800 votes per million votes cast separate Carole and Charles.  Only 7,700 votes separate Carole and Chrishell…prior to dancing.  Both numbers can and will change, but if it’s very similar then you can easily see how Carole could stay over someone like Chrishell who isn’t as well known. What would help is if Chrishell does a great dance 2nd or 3rd, while Carole sucks and goes last.  We’ll soon find out!

The celebs are funny…but who told Tyra she is?  🙂  I see we have another week of Tyra’s catwalk where she’s even more important than the judges. Read more..

DWTS Week 2 Rehearsal Teasers and More Before Showtime

Just a few fun things before Dancing With The Stars tonight. Let the dances begin and don’t forget to VOTE!

Dancing with the Stars Season 29, Week 2 – Who’s Dancing What…and When??

Week 2, coming up. Note that it’s apparently airing on Tuesday this week.  Lots of disturbing things in the press release, not the least of which is this gem:

The show will begin with a comedic cold open featuring host Tyra Banks and the origins of her “smize” as she teaches the celebrities how to use it through the competition.

The only way this is acceptable is if the include Derek because he seems to make everything fun. 🙂 Next, a little reminder in how the voting is going to work:

Live votes (via abc.com, the ABC app and SMS/text) will occur each week only during the live broadcast in the EDT/CDT time zones (but fans in all U.S. time zones may vote within that window). Moving forward with each subsequent episode, the live vote combined with the judges’ scores will be revealed during the broadcast.

And, finally, who’s dancing what…in the order I had them in last week, which was often wrong. Not that it matters to anyone other than the person dancing last. Whole lotta cha cha and a whole lotta foxtrot.Love that they included a couple old songs that are probably a bit more in line with those dance styles. Justina goes from up tempo to the dreaded rumba. I’ll be curious to see how she does on that one after her standout performance last week. Carole AGAIN gets a song with a cat in the title. :::rolls eyes::: Neither clever nor funny, producers.

AJ & Cheryl – Foxtrot (“Ain’t That a Kick in the Head” by Dean Martin)

Kaitlyn & Artem – Foxtrot (“I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack)

Monica & Val – Jive (“Shake it off” by Taylor Swift)

Vernon & Peta – Foxtrot (“We Found Love!” by Rihanna and Calvin Harris)

Anne & Keo – Foxtrot (“Counting Stars” by One Republic)

Justina & Sasha – Rumba (“When You Believe” by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey)

Jeannie & Brandon – Cha Cha (“Roses” by SAINt JHN)

Skai & Alan – Samba to (“Miss Independent” by Neyo)

Johnny & Britt -Tango (“Poker Face” by Lady Gaga)

Jesse & Sharna – Foxtrot (“Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac)

Nelly & Daniella- Cha Cha (“Let’s Grove” by Earth, Wind & Fire)

Nev & Jenna – Cha Cha (“Dynamite” by BTS)

Charles & Emma – Cha Cha (“Never. Too Much” by Luther Vandross)

Chrishell & Gleb – Rumba (“This is Me” by Keala Settle & “The Greatest Showman” ensemble)

Carole & Pasha – Viennese Waltz (“What’s New Pussycat” by Tom Jones)

This week I had a bit of extra time, so I searched Youtube for some of the songs being used this week to see how often they’ve been used. Totally not scientific because it requires the song to be mentioned in the description of the video.

So, I knew that Poker Face had been used before on DWTS, but I had no idea that nearly EVERYONE has danced to it. Nick and Peta. Cheryl and Gilles. Andy and Sharna. I just remembered Derek and Anna’s pro dance. Seriously, search “DWTS Poker Face” on youtube. Then I googled on Derek and Anna’s names because they didn’t come up with the rest…and that’s because their Paso was to Bad Romance. 🙂 Geez…I knew it was Lady Gaga but sue me if I remember the dance and not the correct song. The point is…Lady Gaga loves this show. She even tweeted Kaitlyn’s dance last week saying she loved it. Derek and Anna are below cuz it’s my favorite. 🙂

Ain’t that a Kick in the Head was also used before…by Julianne and Helio. Just beautiful. It was also used on the DWTS tour, but I didn’t find where any other couples danced to it. Doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, just means it wasn’t tagged in the video.

Derek and Amy danced to Counting Stars…and I didn’t find any others.

I knew also that Shake it Off had been used before…and sure enough, Bethany and Derek used it week one. What, are they recycling only songs that Derek used? 🙂 The answer is no: I just found that Sasha and Tonya danced to When You Believe. 🙂

That’s all for this week. I didn’t have any luck with several of them, so I decided that was enough for tonight.

PureDWTS Season 29, Week 1 – Power Rankings

As I find myself saying more and more often in this god forsaken year – this episode of Black Mirror sucks 😛

Granted, my bar for this season of DWTS was set lower than ever; I was expecting a certain degree of shenanigans that inevitably comes with COVID-19 precautions. The lack of audience meant the couples seemed to just get swallowed up by the stage (and lighting), and the walls constructed on both sides of the dance floor to obscure the lack of audience seemed to evoke a sort of post-apocalyptic robot obelisk. Then there was the dystopian (and highly unnerving, at times) pre-recorded applause, booing, and cheering noises that were piped in, often at the wrong time (and wayyyy too loud). The intro of the celebs at the beginning of the show seemed to be some sort of bastardized version of the “choose your player” screen at the beginning of video games, with each character pulsing awkwardly in some sort of characteristic movement – or a preview of the 2020 version of The Sims, who knows. While I enjoyed the intro of the pros walking to the stage one by one and striking a pose, they all seemed to look a bit sad – I like to think it was because they missed Tom. I certainly did.

I just can’t with Tyra, guys. I know it was her first night, but sis was just trying wayyyy too hard, and it came across disingenuous and awkward at times; I just found myself going “We let go of the ease and aplomb of Tom and Erin FOR THIS???” And this is DWTS, not the Met Gala – so the ginormous “look at meeeeeee!” ballgown made me roll my eyes, as did the costume change. I can’t recall Tom or Erin ever changing costumes during the show, or wearing anything that was so over-the-top as to shift focus from the contestants. Nor did they feel the need to stunt in a Ferrari… Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Season 29, Week 1 – LIVE BLOG

Well, here we are once again. Lots of things to be curious about tonight. What will it be like without an audience?? Will Judge Derek be very similar to the Judge Derek we see on World of Dance – hope so, that dude is entertaining and KIND. But truthful. Is Tyra going to be a total camera and microphone hog or just a moderate one?? Are there so many couples that it will be hard to focus?? And which pros will be able to survive without backing dancers and huge sets?? 😀

I, for one, am going to blog like I normally do for DWTS – stream of consciousness, and not a blow by blow of every moment and score. I do that on WoD, but that show is only an hour. Anyway, t-minus 20 minutes!!

So I just posted an interview with Derek on PureDerekHough and he says/implies that he will be back on World of Dance, provided it’s picked up for season 5. Which it probably will be because it had decent ratings, for a summer show. So, either his NBC contract allows him to be on other networks and DWTS is desperate, or he is between contracts (although most are five years) and DWTS used that as an excuse. Who knows?

Here we go…and first shot is Tyra, of course. But then we get all the pros. Love Sharna’s hair so much better.

OG Pro Cheryl the first into the ballroom. I have to say, I like this bit with all the pros dancing alone.

That is a great dress on Tyra and I love the look of the ballroom, honestly. All the celebs looking great. Nice costuming…except Carole Baskin. WTF?

Confession…I got a little teary during the theme song. It’s been a shit year. Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Season 29, Week 1 – Who’s Dancing What…and When??

Well thank god for the ABC press release which has, in the past couple years, just posted what everyone is dancing to and the style. I swear they just got tired of us ferreting out the information and decided to spoil it themselves. 🙂

So, it’s clear that the producers are still picking the music. I wonder if they’re designing all the costumes and have a heavy hand in the choreo like they apparently did last season. The pros actually used to do it ALL. And they did it better.

Who got screwed? Hmmm….anyone doing anything other than Cha Cha or Foxtrot, IMO. Paso on week 1?? This is what happens when you worry more about the music than the dance style…and kids still won’t watch the show. Eye of the Tiger? Ugh. Some of them I just don’t get and I don’t think I want to.

Live voting only during the show….let’s just say that I like Derek having that power better than Len, but the other two jokers are still untrustworthy. Still sucks though. The pimp spot is no longer the pimp spot…at least not for the first few weeks until people pick their favorites. If you are not well known and you go last in the first two weeks, you might be in trouble because people won’t have time to vote for you.

I’ve put them in the order that I think they might actually dance, below. I’ve not added the pro dancer simply because I don’t care enough to search out the information. 🙂 I’ll add them later. Kaitlyn is tough – she could be either first (my bet), the top of the second hour, in the last 3-4 dancers…but not last. I think they’ve always put Carole in the last spot in all the promos, so she’ll get the last spot on show night. I think AJ will be right there with her. They need good stuff at the top of the hour, which is why I have Johnny, Skai and Jesse/Nelly all huddled in there. After that, your guess is as good as mine. 🙂 When we find out the order, I’ll try to update. Don’t know if we will this season – I don’t think George will be in the ballroom.

ETA: So, Cheryl says she’s dancing first and google says her rumored partner is AJ McLean. Not too surprising. I had him second to last, but if they want someone like Carole last and Johnny or Jesse second to last, that works too! Start with a bang?

AJ McLean – Jive (“Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd)
Dancing 1st

Kaitlyn Bristowe – Cha Cha (“Stupid Love” by Lady Gaga)

Monica Aldama – Foxtrot (“My Wish” by Rascal Flatts)

Vernon Davis – Foxtrot (“All of Me” by John Legend)

Anne Heche – Cha Cha (“Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa)

Justina Machado – Cha Cha (“Respect” by Aretha Franklin)

Jeannie Mai – Salsa (“Tell It to My Heart” by Taylor Dayne)

Skai Jackson – Tango (“Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj)

Johnny Weir – Cha Cha (“Buttons” by The Pussycat Dolls)
——2 hour mark—–
Jesse Metcalfe – Quickstep (“Part Time Love” by Stevie Wonder)

Nelly – Salsa (“Ride Wit Me” by Nelly)

Nev Schulman – Foxtrot (“The Way You Look Tonight” by Frank Sinatra)

Charles Oakley – Salsa (“In Da Club” by 50 Cent)

Chrishell Stause – Tango (“Raise Your Glass” by P!nk)

Carole Baskin – Paso (“Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor)

ETA Voting Info from the DWTS twitter account. Looked for this on abc.com yesterday and it’s not there, as far as I can tell.
