Dancing with the Stars Season 29, Week 7 – Who’s Dancing What…and When??

Villains night?? Okay. And honestly, this “Tyra will walk out to…” just pisses me off at this point. Who the f@#k cares? She makes Val look modest and humble at this point.

The paranormal comes to the ballroom! The show’s cold open will find Tyra Banks and the judges dressed up for the night and experiencing their own horror when they find out the celebrities have become villains! Later, Tyra Banks will walk out to “Somebody’s Watching Me” by Rockwell.

Can we please have Derek on the dancefloor to look forward to every week?? We don’t ask for much and you’ve foisted Tyrant on us. :::sigh::: Anyway, here’s what the couples are dancing. And how they’ll be dressed.

Nelly & Daniella – Argentine Tango (Song: “Can’t Feel My Face” by The Weeknd)
Dressed in a costume inspired by Freddy Krueger

Monica & Val – Jazz (Song: “Fever” by Beyonce)
Dressed in a costume inspired by Nurse Ratched

Justina & Sasha – Tango (Song: “Take Me to Church” by MILCK)
Dressed in a costume inspired by Carrie

Jeannie & Brandon – Paso Doble (Song: “Maneater” by Nelly Furtado)
Dressed in a costume inspired by Hannibal Lecter

AJ & Cheryl – Tango (Song: “Psycho” by the Intermezzo Orchestra)
Dressed in a costume inspired by Norman Bates

Skai & Alan – Argentine Tango (Song: “Everything I Wanted” by Billie Eilish)
Dressed in a costume inspired by Bride of Chucky

Johnny & Britt – Viennese Waltz (Song: “Creep” by Vincent/Kimberly Nichole)
Dressed in a costume inspired by Dracula

Nev & Jenna – Paso Doble (Song: “Swan Lake Remix” by District 78)
Dressed in a costume inspired by Black Swan

Chrishell & Gleb – Paso Doble (Song: “In the Air Tonight” by VonLichten)
Dressed in a costume inspired by Maleficent

Kaitlyn & Artem – Paso Doble (Song: “Disturbia” by Rihanna)
Dressed in a costume inspired by Cruella de Vil

Who Danced it better….

Some weeks I can’t find anything, this week I found toooo much. So, I didn’t even look for Billie Eilish, assuming she’s too new to have been danced to – someone will tell me I’m wrong, I’m sure. I got tired by the time I got to Johnny, although I had already done Disturbia, simply because I knew it would be easy. 🙂

Anyone who’s been watching this show for a while and saw the words “Psycho” probably instantly thought of one of Derek’s iconic dances. The Psycho Tango with Ricki Lake. We were so sure Derek and Ricki had gotten screwed getting that song. Never count Derek out. I’ll say, good luck, AJ…not only is that dance a tough act to follow, you’re being judged by the choreographer who made it a legend. 🙂 Ricki wasn’t the best dancer ever, but Derek is often genius. PureDWTS Season 29, Week 6 – Power Rankings

Just for the record – I really have no idea what I’m doing anymore 😛

I mean, I obviously know how to write, and I know how to look at dances and determine whether they are decent or not; I guess I mean the conclusions I’m drawing are basically a roll of the dice these days, because the results of this show aren’t really making much sense to me anymore. In what universe does an Olympic figure skater somehow tumble into the bottom two with a Superbowl champ, while reality stars with marginal dance skills end up safe??? Last night’s results would have been unheard of ten years ago on this show – hell, even three years ago on this show. Granted, Vernon was not as adept as the majority of the NFL players we’ve had on this show, and Johnny got RIDICULOUSLY low-balled on his score this week – but I guess the only conclusion I can reasonably draw is that not many people are actually voting (or voting consistently), and it’s causing the results to become unpredictable from time to time. There’s also the fact that you can now vote ten times PER COUPLE, per voting method, which I think is muddling things – where people used to have to put all their eggs in one basket, they can now put the same amount of eggs in multiple baskets; this only adds to the total number of points (and thus diminishes the power of each vote) and just seems to result in the needle not moving as much when you combine scores and votes. Add to this the fact that TPTB seem intent on keeping Monica (or Val) around despite a mediocre performance thus far, and I’m not sure what to make of things anymore. I feel like the “perpetual present” that the pandemic has left us all stuck in is seeping into every aspect of my life: it’s hard to think about what’s going to happen in the future, when each day just seems like an interminable NOW with no end in sight. Christ, this pandemic has made me nihilistic.

So we’re past the halfway point of the season, and we’ve eliminated 1/3 of the cast – so what type of narrative seems to be taking shape for the finale? Hard to say. For once, I don’t feel confident claiming any one person will for sure win – I tend to think Kaitlyn (and probably AJ, too – unless they fall into the bottom together) are likely going to get saved by the judges no matter what, but when it comes to winning…all bets are off. Will Nev make the finals? Maybe…maybe not. Nelly, Justina, and Jeannie are all big question marks for me, too – I think it’s equally possible that any of them make the finals or get eliminated just short of them. My gut says they can’t protect Monica forever, and if Skai keeps having off-weeks, I don’t think she sticks around, either. No idea what to make of Chrishell anymore, as it feels like Gleb could walk center stage and take a dump and still get glowing reviews for their routine. And is Johnny being set up as a shock elim in the coming weeks??? Could be…or last night could have been an anomaly. And despite Derek usually making the right call, my confidence in the judges this season choosing the correct couple when saving from the bottom two has waned – I tend to think they may be getting instructed to “make things interesting” from the control room, and may vote in a way that they wouldn’t normally. Hence, Carrie Ann’s (downright idiotic) choice to save Vernon & Peta over Johnny & Britt.

So Derek graced the DWTS stage for the first time in 3 years, and I daresay that was probably the only glimmer of hope DWTS has for a possible choreo Emmy nomination next summer – and given that perennial heavy-hitter SYTYCD did not air this year, it’s possible DWTS could eke out a nod along with some of the routines from World of Dance. Or who knows, maybe they won’t even bother to nominate anyone in that category – seems like a very 2020 outcome 😉 Loved this paso, and it felt like the culmination of all the years Derek spent using DWTS and the MOVE tours as a “test kitchen” for some of his wilder choreography ideas. Paso was always his favorite dance to choreograph, so the choice made sense; it was also nice to see how far Hayley has come in her ballroom and Latin technique, as some of her early days dabbling in it were a bit…shaky. I daresay her Latin technique bests Allison’s now, though, so if they ever went shopping for female pros again in the future (if there is one…), I think she’s a logical choice.

As most of us had predicted, Vernon left us this week – and while it was disappointing, I caught a bit of his GMA appearance this morning, and he seemed to have a very upbeat attitude about his elim, and was generally grateful for the experience. I think he had plateaued in terms of his dancing, too, so I don’t know that he would have fared well when they would have started doing 2+ dances per week. Glad he got to go out on a positive note, though – his cha-cha was a fun tribute to his grandpa and I think he had a lot of fun. Read more..

DWTS 29 Week Six – Interviews, Recaps, Scores, TV Ratings, And Extras

ETA: Lots of updates below….

It’s hard to believe it’s the midway of the season. Time is flying fast for this season. The couples really need to impress now with no mistakes or anyone could leave. I was the most impressed with Kaitlyn & Artem last night. Just perfection. And how about Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert? Now that was an Emmy winning dance! I want more!!

So, as always, let’s check out the scores from last night in order…

AJ & Cheryl 27 (9, 9, 9)
Monica & Val 27 (9, 9, 9)
Kaitlyn & Artem 27 (9, 9, 9)
Justina & Sasha 27 (9, 9, 9)
Nev & Jenna 26 (9, 9, 8)
Jeannie & Brandon 25 (8, 8, 9)
Nelly & Daniella 24 (8, 8, 8)
Chrishell & Gleb 24 (8, 8, 8)
Johnny & Britt 22 (7, 8, 7)
Vernon & Peta 21 (7, 7, 7) Eliminated
Skai & Alan 18 (6, 6, 6)

Dancing with the Stars Season 29, Week 6 – LIVE BLOG

Hooray for Derek dancing tonight. His and Hayley’s dance looks like it should be good.

T-minus 25 Minutes…

It is week 6, isn’t it? I think I’m confused because I’ve worked the last four weekends. Yesterday was my first day off in a month. That’s my excuse if I start screwing things up. 🙂

Now THIS is a cold open. I love it. But we still get the Tyrant cat walk. Why does she always pick somewhat unflattering things to wear? Dang, I can’t hear Derek or Tyrant talk over the fake audience. The whole advantage of a fake audience is that YOU control the volume. This is why they never win emmys for Sound mixing. Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Season 29, Week 6 – Who’s Dancing What…and When??

They finally stopped calling it a cold open, but still Tyra is a focus of the show. She walks out every week – why is this an event?

The show will start with host Tyra Banks walking out to the ballroom to “I’m Coming Out” by Diana Ross. In addition, judge Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert will dance a special Paso Doble to “Uccen” by Taalbi Brothers.

According to the Futon Critic, the November 2 show will feature a double elimination. Buckle your seat belts!!

Here’s who’s dancing what this week. Looks to me like only Vernon, AJ, Skai, Johnny, Nev and possibly Kaitlyn got dance styles in their wheelhouse. Everyone else could be in trouble. Except possibly Chrishell who got contemporary…which has no rules and Gleb can sex it up to the max.

Nelly & Daniella – Viennese Waltz (“Humble & Kind” by Tim McGraw)

Monica & Val – Rumba (“Have I Told You Lately” by Rod Stewart)

Vernon & Peta – Cha Cha (“Celebration” by Kool & The Gang)

Justina & Sasha – Viennese Waltz (“She’s Always a Woman” by Billy Joel)

Jeannie & Brandon – Rumba (“You Gotta Be” by Des’ree)

AJ & Cheryl – Samba (“Mi Gente” by J Balvin and Willy William)

Skai & Alan – Cha Cha (“Say So” by Dojo Cat, featuring Nicki Minaj)

Johnny & Britt – Salsa (“On The Floor” by Jennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull)

Nev & Jenna – Jazz (“Good Vibrations” by Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch)

Chrishell & Gleb – Contemporary (“Stars” by Grace Potter & The Nocturnals)

Kaitlyn & Artem – Samba (“Sorry” by Justin Bieber)

Who Danced it better….first up, Nancy Kerrigan dancing Waltz to “She’s Always a Woman”. Justina is doing V. Waltz and I don’t think the slow dances are her strong suit. And I love Nancy’s dress!

I didn’t find “Have I told You Lately” on youtube…and I searched BOTH DWTS and Dancing with the Stars. 🙂 I also had trouble with “Celebration”…found lots of celebration related stuff, but not the actual song. I did find a very sweet waltz by David and Lindsay to “Humble and Kind”…and another gorgeous dress. Nelly is a better dancer (by a little) than David, but can he handle and V. Waltz??

I also didn’t find “You Gotta Be” by Des’ree. Keep in mind, me not finding it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, it just means that my casual search did not turn up a video. But, here is an excellent Samba by Jordan and Lindsay to “Mi Gente”…doubt very much AJ can live up to this one.

I found nothing on “Say So” by Dojo Cat, but I guess I should expect to since the official video was only posted on youtube 7 months ago. I also didn’t see “On the Floor” on youtube…I saw tons of Pitbull (obviously) and I saw a bit of Jennifer, including a pro dance choregraphed by Derek, but nothing with this particular song. Man, I’m striking out a lot…cuz I couldn’t find “Good Vibrations” or “Stars” either. But of COURSE I found Ginger and Val dancing to a latin remix of “Sorry” by Justin Bieber. I could barely watch the whole thing as I’m still traumatized from having Ginger shoved down my throat to this day when it comes to GMA and DWTS. Ugh. I feel very confident that Kaitlyn and Artem will do it better.

PureDWTS Season 29, Week 5 – Power Rankings

Soooo…I can’t be the only one who wonders what the Russian pros (minus Artem, he’s an angel) did to piss off the hair department this week, right? 😛 What in the name of Party City Clearance Bin was on Gleb & Val’s heads??? I think the conclusion Mama Spence and I came to was some unholy abomination born of Mandy Patinkin in The Princess Bride, the owner of the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders, and this man looking for love in an 80’s dating service video:

Alan only got off marginally better than the other two, with what looks to be a discount version of Vicki Lawrence’s wig from Mama’s Family:

I don’t know if Tyrant is becoming more tolerable, or if everything else in this year is such a flaming dumpster fire by comparison and I’m just getting used to her particular brand of annoyance, but I found her MILDLY less annoying this week. MILDLY. But I will say I found it super-duper sketch when she brought up the whole elimination gaffe from last week again, and it makes me wonder if there’s more to it than simply being a control room “whoops”. Sis seemed awfully defensive about it, and eager to “set the record straight” – to which I say “Sure, Jan.” And so far, everyone that has fallen into the bottom two and been saved has ended up in the bottom two again and gotten flushed out the following week. But this week, Monica manages to avoid it altogether, owing to some awfully generous scoring for what I would consider a fairly weak tango? Just makes my brain itch. I don’t know to what end strings are being pulled, but it just adds to the stench of this season for me.

Well, in the aforementioned unexpected twist, Monica managed to stay completely safe this week, and it was Vernon and Jesse who took a tumble into the “Danger Zone” (seriously – of all the songs they could have resurrected for 80’s week, why not this one???).  Jesse was ultimately flushed out in a unanimous vote by the judges, and while I feel like he had plateaued (and even backslid) in the past two weeks, I am still a skosh disappointed that we lost him, because I do feel like he was trying; I feel like the one thing that gave Vernon a leg up over him, though, is that Vernon seems to take criticism from the judges and let it fuel him, while Jesse only seemed drained by it. Maybe it was for the best that he left sooner rather than later, as the weekly criticism seemed to be taking its toll on Jesse; but it still irks me that he and Sharna got screwed with music at least half the time, and I feel like that did play a major role in some of their dances being a bit lackluster. Their song this week had some really strange tempo changes that even Mama Spence noticed (and she will be the first to tell you she lacks all rhythm), so I’m inclined to cut them a bit of a break for some of their more awkward routines.

Given that it was a theme week, we of course had some songs that weren’t ideal for the dance that was being done to them, and most of the pros had to sacrifice a bit of content in favor of upholding the “spirit” of 80’s week…so I’m being a bit more lenient on filler/time wasters this week. I also have beaucoup gifs this week, so bear with me 😉 Read more..

ETA2: Access interviews added and more…

ETA: Updated below with GMA interview with Sharna and Jesse.

Two words….Johnny & Britt! Nev & Jenna and Artem & Kaitlyn were so good last night too, but, Johnny & Brit hit it to another level and world! What a beautiful and emotional contemporary dance and one for the Dancing With The Stars history books! And can you imagine Britt winning her first season as a pro? It would be so cool.

So, as always, let’s check out the scores from last night in order…

Johnny & Britt 29 (10, 10, 9)
Kaitlyn & Artem 27 (9, 9, 9)

Dancing with the Stars Season 29, Week 5 – LIVE BLOG

Oh yes it’s 80’s night and the feelings right, come on!! Name that tune for tonight’s question. 🙂

I’m blocking out Tyrant’s cold open before it even happens. Yes, I am that talented. 😉 Might have to block out Derek’s outfit as well. Here’s a sneak peek.

T-minus 30 minutes…

Okay now I see why they were wearing all the crazy shit during rehearsals. 🙂 This seems like the cold open to me.

And the Tyrant show begins…

Totally unnecessary discussion of what happened last week with the elimination. :::rolls eyes:::

Justina is up first with Maniac. Jazzzzz….

She’s working it as well as she always does, making it fun. There’s not much to this dance, but that’s to be expected, I think. Better lift this week. Little problem with timing there towards the end. And they actually did the water. Lord.

Derek says she’s a maniac in a good way. I hate his hair by the way. 🙂 Bruno says wet, wild and wonderful. Says it was deliciously 80s. CAI says that was her jam. Says she was incredible. Says the were in sync…and she did catch the part where they got out of sync.

Scores: 8, 8, 8 for a total of 24

Jessie is up next with his Tango…and he looks like a different person. Not bad at all.

Dancing with the Stars Season 29, Week 5 – Who’s Dancing What…and When??

It’s 80’s Night….and this is just ridiculous, not Rad or Tubular. From the ABC/Disney Press Release:

The show will start with a cold open with Tyra walking into the ballroom to Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know.”

Wow, what a great cold open and so very different from every other week this season. Dear lord. Tyrant is NOT the star of this show!! This is exactly what everyone was worried about when they heard she was joining the show. And since she’s executive producer, there is likely little the other producers can do about it. It’s literally vomit inducing. There are at least 25 people who are going to be on the show this week that are more talented than her (sorry CAI and Bruno, you didn’t quite make the cut…close, though, Bruno). Anyway, on to the real stars of the show and what they’re dancing.

BTW, I’m a youngster of the 80’s and Tainted Love is one of my all time favorite songs. 🙂 But WHY did they have to give it to Val? I doubt he and Monica will do it justice. Damn, also love “I think we’re alone now”…excellent and I have higher hopes for Kaitlyn and Artem doing it justice. Lot’s a tangos!! “The Power of Love” was one of those songs they played to absolute death…I think I’m still over it and cringe when I hear it. Same goes for “Total Eclipse” and “Open Arms”. The Jazz dances will be interesting because those songs are so clearly not jazzy at all; Jazz has more clearly than ever been reduced to a catch all where you can do anything you want. Ahhh…also love Tears for Fears. I suppose the producers aren’t cool enough to whip out a Squeeze song, are they? Answer: No.

ETA: AJ dancing 6th which should put him at the top of the hour. The pimpage continues…

Nelly & Daniella – Samba  (Song: “Rhythm of the Night” by DeBarge)

Monica & Val – Tango  (Song: “Tainted Love” by Soft Cell)

Vernon & Peta – Tango (Song: “Livin’ On a Prayer” by Bon Jovi)

Justina & Sasha – Jazz  (Song: “Maniac” by Michael Sembello)

Jeannie & Brandon – Jazz  (Song: “Like a Virgin” by Madonna)

AJ & Cheryl – Waltz  (Song: “Open Arms” by Journey)
Dancing 6th

Skai & Alan – Jazz  (“The Power of Love” by Huey Lewis & The News)

Johnny & Britt – Contemporary  (Song: “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Taylor)

Jesse & Sharna – Tango  (Song: “Everybody Wants to Rule The World” by Tears for Fears)

Nev & Jenna – Quickstep  (Song: “Take on Me” by a-ha)

Chrishell & Gleb – Cha Cha  (Song: “You Got it (The Right Stuff)” by New Kids on the Block)

Kaitlyn & Artem – Tango  (Song: “I Think We’re Alone Now” by Tiffany)

Who Danced it Better?  Well, I don’t remember a lot of 80’s music on DWTS, but let’s look at what I could find. I could only find “Open Arms” on SCD and it’s a beautiful waltz. I don’t see AJ doing this well.
