Dancing with the Stars Season 18, Week 4 – Dancing by the Numbers!

Okay, after being out of town for a few days, I finally got to watch the whole show. My thoughts…in a bullet list. 🙂

  • Geez, all that brouhaha over Julianne’s comments and that was it?? She qualified the crap out of it and said she loves Maks but…. Really, I was expecting harsher, after all the discussion here.
  • Candace was TOTALLY hosed. And I mean totally. That was a very good dance and Tony did a good job with it. WTF is going on here?? Is she being sacrificed on the Meryl alter?
  • Candace’s dance was about a thousand times better than Danica’s, thanks to Maks. Is he EVER going to stop putting all that non-dancing in his choreo? About time he was called on it.
  • LOVED Drew’s dance – Witney got it just right. I’m liking this girl a lot.

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

DWTS Season 18, Week 5: Who’s Dancing What…and When?? (SPOILERS)

Disney week? Okay. I’m not as jazzed as everyone else, but I do like Prince Charming. But just who is going to BE Prince Charming – that is the question. 🙂 Actually, it might be obvious from the list below….

And Courtney got her Wish!!! 😀

Note – these are in no particular order. Yet.

ETA: Quoting Courtney, “We got some hardcore Disney fiends up in this mofo!” 🙂

PureDWTS Guest Poem For DWTS18 Week 4: “The Grand Switch-Up Ball”

Lois always has a way of summing up the dances every week in her wonderful poems and here she is again…

THE GRAND SWITCH-UP BALL

Welcome to the Grand Switch Up, Come On, Come All
Ballroom doors wide open for The Grand Switch-up Ball

The cards were dealt, the dancers shaken up like dice
Meeting different partners and breaking the dancing ice

The entire cast performed a sparkling dance so divine
Audience roared in approval for the switched-up nine

Charlie and Peta united for a Rumba of grand majesty
Sexy, sultry, stunning, mirror image, a grand sight to see

Danica and Maks Jive, shining, beaming bright light
A kicky, sparky, tricky dance illuminating up the night

James and Cheryl Tango burning hot, fierce, and mean
Powerful, precise, like a passion play that set the scene

Drew and Witney Cha-Chaed, ready and rarin’ to go
Drew was the splendid Sugar Daddy of the Grand Show

Amy and Mark Salsaed to a swingy, shaking Salsa beat
Shaken and stirred, sensational, so special and so neat

Candace and Tony Quickstepped with rocking energy
Grand speed across the floor, a hair raising sight to see

Meryl and Val Argentine Tango, the dance of the night
Magical instruments of perfection, grand seductive sight

Cody and Sharna Foxtrotted with gusto in the Grand Ball
With swagger, with the voice of Cody, giving it their all

NeNe and Derek’s Jazz, a joyous razz-ma-tazzy treat
Quirky perky Beyoncé trip, audience out of their seat

Macy’s Stars of Dance, Derek Hough dynamic creation
Splendid, stupendous stars, Paso, Flamenco sensation

The Grand Switch-Up Ball, dancers mixed up just fine
Next Monday night will return couples to the original nine!

THE GRAND SWITCH-UP BALL, THE COUPLES WERE SHAKEN LIKE DICE!
THE CREATIONS OF THE SHAKEN UP COUPLES TURNED OUT RATHER NICE!

Cody Simpson And Witney Carson Talk DWTS On KTLA (Video)

KTLA interviewed Cody Simpson and Witney Carson about their union together on Dancing With The Stars, the switch up dances this past week, their new dance (Cody says they have a Samba …like Court told Heidi and I last night and were going to reveal soon), his hair (love that hair!), his music, and more. Afterbuzz TV Reviews DWTS Season 18 Week 4: Do You Agree Or Disagree With Their Thoughts?

Hey Dancettes, ready for the new Afterbuzz TV show? This time Jenna Johnson and Artem Chigvintsev join Kristyn Burtt and the crew to review Dancing With The Stars Season 18 Week 4. Lot’s of diverse discussion this time. You won’t want to miss what they say on Maks, Danica, and Julianne! Part of them thought Julianne was rude with her judging and part of them didn’t. Suri thought Maks handled it well (he did?). I especially loved their talk on the Macy’s Stars Of Dance. It was cool getting Artem’s perspective on Derek and his choreography being he was part of the dance. Note too that the next Macy’s Stars Of Dance takes place in two weeks. Lots more below. Another great show! I so look forward to these every week.

PureDWTS Season 18, Week 4 – Power Rankings

Tonight’s episode of Sesame Street was brought to you by the phrases “these are the couples you chose!”, “keep it all in the family”, and “incestual”.  🙂 I know I can’t be the only one that thought they were trying to drive the point home just a bit too hard that the couples we saw last night were the ones that we voted for – defensive much? Had they actually given Meryl to Derek (as the voters had), it would have created an entire cascade of partner changes that I think would have created an entirely different outcome last night.  But that’s neither here nor there – I guess I’m just sort of over the entire partner switch at this point. It’s over and done with, and it’s hard to dwell on what a turd the whole thing was when we’ve got Disney Week  next week 🙂

I do feel the need to touch on the phrase “keep it all in the family!” though – on the surface, it seems innocuous enough, but I feel like it’s yet another barrier the Chmerkovskiy brothers (and Tony, to a lesser degree) put up between themselves and the other pros on the show.  I know they seem to have a sort of “us against the world” mentality, but more often than not, they themselves are the ones creating that environment.  “Keep it all in the family” says to me “I don’t trust the other pros.  I refuse to associate with the other pros.  I am better than the other pros. Don’t let the other pros near my partner…mine, mine, MINE!” It implies that the only family that matters is theirs – and the relationships with the other pros that they’ve cultivated over the years are worthless.  The Chmerkovskiys are a family, but so is DWTS – when the cards are down, the pros do look out for each other. I guess the reason I’m bringing it up is because I was rather surprised to hear Meryl repeat it in her package – I think it was probably just out of politeness to Val & Maks, but in the spirit of the switch (which so many of the other pros embraced with open arms – including Tony), it just seemed almost like self-segregation.

I’m left feeling rather puzzled by the judges’ comments & scoring last night – there were certain couples that got raked across the coals that I didn’t think were that bad (Candace & Tony, Charlie & Peta), couples that got treated with kid gloves (and this is probably gonna get me in trouble, but Amy & Mark), and couples that just did not really register at all with the judges (Danica & Maks, Cody & Sharna). And apparently there was fallout backstage last night after the show – a source says that Peta was in tears and was being consoled by Charlie & Sharna, and Mark was allegedly overheard saying that he thinks he’s “as good as done” next week thanks to Tony (which I don’t agree with…at least not the reasoning).  Tough day at the office for those two 🙁

On the upside, we got a pretty cute opening number (that was perhaps a little heavy on the “switch” theme, but whatever), and the Macy’s Stars of Dance segment returned triumphantly with a pretty cool flamenco-infused number by Derek, Artem, Sasha, Henry, Jon Platero, & the beast that is Kathryn McCormick.  I smell some potential Emmy fodder, if the Stars of Dance segments in the coming weeks measure up to the one we saw last night! Julianne also returned as a judge, to both cheers and jeers – and WTF was up with her eyebrows??? Somebody get Anastasia Soare on the phone, because somebody is using the wrong color pencil on Miss Hough…

Bear with me as I try not to repeat too much of the stuff I said in the live discussion post last night – guess I should have held back a bit for my power rankings 😛 I went ahead and put the original pro partner names in parentheses here, as they will be the ones potentially at-risk to be eliminated next week. DWTS 18 Week 4 GMA Recap, Maks Chmerkovskiy And Julianne Hough Interviewed

And below is a Good Morning America recap of Dancing With The Stars last night. There is also a backstage interview with Maks Chmerkovskiy complaining about Julianne Hough’s judging. She comments too. (Do I dare comment on that? What does he mean Julianne is too young to judge him? I don’t think so. She’s just as decorated as a pro as he is! 🙄 )

ABC US News | ABC Business News

ETA: Some of the cast and pros commented on the Julianne and Maks thing too as well as Maks himself. Here is a take, but be sure to see Today for more.

Ultimately, the exchange made for good TV.

“It doesn’t matter,” Chmerkovskiy said of Hough’s remarks. “It’s not about me. People want to be entertained when they tune in.”

The Hough/Chmerkovskiy post-dance exchange was reminiscent of other interactions he’d had with judges in past seasons — there’s a reason he’s often referred to as the bad boy of the ballroom — and that’s a place Chmerkovskiy would prefer not to visit.

“We were brought back to where things were,” he noted. “I don’t like that. Just like (I don’t like) the switch-up or Disney Week or Outer Space Week. But it’s not my call. I just have to enjoy it. We’re all in the same boat together.”

Below is Julianne with On The Red Carpet….

DWTS18 Week 4 Post Media And Interviews Part 1, Switch Up Dance Poll (VOTE)

What another great night of dancing! I really liked the opening number and Derek Hough and the Macy’s Stars Of Dance performance. HOT! Also, all the couples did much better than I thought they would with the Switch Up dances too. Though, please….no more Switch Up dances in the future as I think the cast had enough pressure as it is. Why put that kind of pressure on them…and US? 😯 What do you think? Vote in our new Poll and then see some media afterwards.

So, for new media and interviews after the show, how about if we start with ABC7 with George Pennacchio!! Also, On The Red Carpet has one interview posted with Meryl and Val (seen below). Val is happy with last night and the way it went down with an exception that he wasn’t happy with the judges scores and comments for Maks and Charlie. He’s also not looking forward to Disney week while Meryl feels the opposite…

Be sure to keep checking back to this link for more interviews to be added through out the day. You can also view some high quality photos of the night at On The Red Carpet.

And for those needing a repeat of the scores….

NeNe Leakes & Derek Hough: 32
Charlie White & Peta Murgatroyd: 33
Meryl Davis & Val Chmerkovskiy: 39
James Maslow & Cheryl Burke: 35
Amy Purdy & Mark Ballas: 34
Drew Carey & Witney Carson: 33
Cody Simpson & Sharna Burgess: 31
Candace Cameron Bure & Tony Dovolani: 28
Danica McKellar & Maksim Chmerkovskiy: 32

Stay tuned. More coming!! 😉

ETA: Below is some after dark coverage with PopTVDotCom…

ETA2: The On The Red Carpet Interviews are now up! Be sure to see them here. Lots of Disney talk! ADDING: Drew says he has the Quickstep. Cody says he is doing something to “Lion King”(Court knows more. Stay tuned). Sharna says she and Charlie have the Jazz. Candace hints that she is doing to something to “Little Mermaid”. Tony is going to be a “dog”. Read more..

DWTS Season 18, Week 4 – Let’s Recap Tonight’s Show (Spoilers)

Heidi is otherwise occupied for the time being…so for now, you get me (Court).  Who’s ready to see this partner switch?

Cute opening number…maybe a little repetitive on the whole “switch” theme. That song takes me back to sorority recruitment 2005. Damn, Julianne’s hair is SHORT.

Candace & Tony actually seem like a good match, personality-wise. I think that dance suited them both well, and she actually handled it better than the last two dances we’ve seen from her.

Kinda surprised at Candace’s score. Thought she was a little low-balled. Wonder if this is gonna be one of those nights with lots of over & underscoring…

Wow. James & Cheryl must’ve found some chemistry after all – cause that was hot, both technically & from a showmanship perspective. He really may be a “dark horse” (pun intended 😉 )

Unrelated: isn’t that Oksana’s bf that was standing up by Cheryl’s throne? Jonathan Platero?

Erin, your voice makes me want to punch babies. Please stop with this inane showmance talk.

Drew & Witney were actually really cute – I think having a younger partner brought out the more playful side of Drew.

Hmmmm…beginning to wonder if they’ve decided that Candace is expendable, the way they’re scoring everyone else…

Pretty cool Stars of Dance performance from Derek & Co. Kathryn McCormick is a beast – probably only one of two female contemporary dancers that could have kept up with the ballroom boys…the other being Allison Holker.

Hmmm…Danica & Maks were interacting exactly the way we said they would: Maks saying “just do it” and Danica asking super-detailed questions. It was cute, but it seemed like an awful lot of time-wasting…and WTF was up with the wedge sneakers???

Charlie & Peta were nice to watch – if not a bit incestuous-looking, with their twinnie-looking hair. Thought I saw a lift, though…will Carrie Ann call them out?

Really glad Amy is going back to Derek next week – Mark tried, but I think Derek just knows better how to utilize Amy’s skills. On the upside – her ass looked hot. I’m envious 🙂

Kinda left with mixed feelings about Cody & Sharna’s foxtrot – I think she did a good job of choreographing to his strengths, but his frame is still wonky and I feel like he doesn’t get very invested unless he can make the dance very “Cody”. Also, Cody & Sharna aren’t the first Aussies to dance together on DWTS – that would be Ingo & Kym on season 16. 🙂

Now that may not have been the most difficult jazz routine, but it was PERFECT for NeNe and I thought going the Afro-jazz route was pretty clever. Was nice to see her let loose completely!

Meryl nailed that. ‘Nuff said. 🙂
