PureDWTS Season 27 – Preliminary Thoughts & Predictions

I feel like all I do is apologize for the lack of timeliness in my posts these days 😛 Sorry guys – life got busy for me real fast this season. I thought about doing a preliminary power rankings, but I realized I haven’t been keeping up with enough media about the couples to really do that justice.  So instead, welcome to my random and scattered thoughts about this season, in no particular order 🙂 I tried hit on some of the questions I was getting on Twitter, but if there’s anything else you want my thoughts on, go ahead and leave it in the comments and I’ll try to answer.

This is DeMarcus’ MBT to lose.  Now before anyone assumes I mean “I think DeMarcus will win!”, pump your brakes – what I mean by this is that I feel like DeMarcus has the easiest path to the MBT, from the jump: he’s a former NFL player from possibly the most universally popular team (the Dallas Cowboys – often referred to as “America’s team”, part of the reason why Emmitt was so popular), he’s well-spoken and well-liked, he’s in great shape physically, he’s got one helluva work ethic, and he has a great rapport with his partner, who is also widely well-liked and well-respected.  Basically, as long as he dances decently (not necessarily great – decent should do it) and puts on a good show and has a “journey”, I think the MBT is his – which means the other couples are going to have to work twice as hard to win, even though they might actually be better dancers. DeMarcus is easily the biggest fanbase ringer this season, from where I sit – and sometimes, that can help a decent dancer overtake a fantastic dancer for the MBT. Just ask Donny Osmond.

We could be dealing with season 24, redux.  I can’t help but draw some comparisons between this season and season 24, when there was a preponderance of ringers (particularly female ones) and the last two standing were guys with no previous dance experience (one of which was an NFL player) that were just really likeable and had great chemistry with their partners. I think each season of DWTS can realistically handle 1-2 high-level ability ringers, tops – any more than that and you start to run into some unexpected results, as we saw in season 24 (you could also argue that too many fanbase ringers of the same type yield unexpected results – look at season 22, when all three NFL players got shut out of the finale). And here’s the kicker: you’ve gotta have a pro that actually knows how to choreograph to an ability ringer’s strengths.  One way I think season 24 fell woefully short was handing the two biggest ringers (Normani & Heather) to two pros who couldn’t cut the mustard, choreographically-speaking. Maks’ choreo for Heather that season was absolutely pitiful, and while Val managed a few hits (the Mulan paso, the contemporary, maybe the Argentine tango), towards the end of the season, his choreo kinda petered out (the Viennese waltz and freestyle were both head-scratchers for me). Even Mark seemed to burn out towards the end of season 25 with Lindsey.  I think a big key to the big ability ringers’ (Tinashe, Alexis, Juan Pablo, Mary Lou, and to a lesser degree, Evanna & Milo) longevity this season is how well their partners are able to choreograph to their strengths – and if they’re able to keep up the momentum, all season long.

If any of the pros are going to step up the choreo to become the “new Mark/Derek”, now would be the time to do it. We’re kind of in an odd transition period in the show: with the exception of Cheryl popping in for fall seasons, the OG pros are all gone; even some of the second generation pros (Peta, Val, Sharna, Emma, Sasha) are starting to pursue other opportunities outside of DWTS, and they may move on from the show before long. TPTB continue to try retooling the show to keep up with the times (All-Athletes, Juniors), and the pressure is generally on to keep this show “fresh”. While most of the female pros are actually stellar choreographers, the male pro lineup has been woefully void of great choreography; if one of them wanted to try cementing himself as the new choreographic genius of the male lineup, now would be the time to do it – and I think Brandon may be the ticket.  I have heard tremendous praise for his skills as both a teacher and a choreographer on Juniors, and if you think about it, he’s the first male pro that has come from the same training background that gave us Lindsay, Witney, and Jenna. He’s impressively cross-trained (like the rest of the Utah Squad, and really, Ballas/Hough before them), and doesn’t seem to have any of the same “ballroom purity” hangups that we seem to see with Chmerkovskiy acolytes. I’m thinking Brandon could be the breakout star pro of this season, if he plays his cards right.

I am totally fine with newbs like Brandon & Alan getting ringers. Val’s already been granted his 2 MBT’s, and seems to be transitioning to more of a judging role; Gleb & Keo just can’t seem to get their choreo right; Artem & Sasha are for the most part “hit”, but still sometimes “miss”.  Repeating it again for good measure: the male pro lineup needs a wake-up call.  So if that means handing Brandon & Alan some pretty ringy ability ringers, I’m all for it – let’s see what they’re made of. I actually thought Alan did respectably well with Mirai, and the only issue there had more to do with Mirai’s loose lips and general lack of self-awareness. Seems like these pros really have to hit the ground running in their initial season, anymore, if they want to continue as pros – and that can be kinda hard to do, if they’re always handing the newbs dud partners. Cheryl, Mark, Julianne, and Lacey all got ringers in their first season on the show – and it seemed to keep them in play for awhile. I used to be of the “newbs shouldn’t get ringers” camp – but anymore, I just keep going “Show me something new and different!!!” and “Everyone ends up getting a dud at some point, and everyone ends up getting a ringer at some point. No point getting too hung up on a single season.”

I wouldn’t count on Mary Lou being an early out.  I know some are hoping she’s gone by week 2 or 3, due to her comments about the Nassar case – I don’t blame you.  However, a bit of a reminder about the demographics of this show: the largest chunk of viewers are middle-aged, female, and conservative, and likely have very fond memories of Mary Lou as the Olympic darling who brought home gold back in her youth.  I would also venture a guess that many of them (like some of the conservatives currently trying to get a man of questionable morals elected to the Supreme Court) are “#MeToo skeptics” who are unfortunately more likely to give a pass to an Olympic darling defending her former trainer than to take the word of countless women who bravely came forward to speak about the trauma they endured at Nassar’s hand. It sucks, no doubt – but it’s an unfortunate pattern I’ve noticed, and it makes me think Mary Lou could last at least until the midpoint of the season – especially if she’s a decent dancer, which I think she will be.  I don’t see her winning or making the finals, though…at least not right now.

I think Nikki & Alexis need to turn on the charm, though.  Both come from professions that have yet to really do well on DWTS: comedians, models, and social media influencers. With the exception of conservative-leaning “country boy” comedian Bill Engvall, comedians generally haven’t done very well on this show – I think their biggest struggle is connecting with the audience, particularly if their brand of humor is a bit more high-brow or sarcastic. Or female 🙁 Conservative folk love the somewhat simple-minded humor of Jeff Foxworthy, Rodney Carrington, Larry the Cable Guy, and Bill Engvall – but they tend not to embrace the D.L. Hughley’s, Jeff Ross’, and Margaret Cho’s of the world quite so warmly. Unless Nikki ends up being an Alexis or Tinashe-level dancer (and I don’t think she will be), or ends up finding a way to endear herself to the audience…I see her as an early out. Alexis may be a very trained dancer, but she’s also a model (and they tend not to last long on this show) and a social media personality (the only precedent we have for that being Hayes Grier – who couldn’t manage to get his millions of followers to vote hard enough to get him past week 7). Additionally, Alexis seems more reserved on-camera – so I think she’s really going to have to come out of her shell to endear herself to the audience, if she wants to stick around.

Being an “inspiring backstory” ringer may not be as much of an advantage as it once was.  Not counting Heather McCartney (who despite being an amputee, was also the much-maligned ex-wife of Paul McCartney), Amy was a novelty, since we hadn’t really had anyone disabled on the show in awhile, and Derek managed to mold her into a pretty respectable dancer. Noah had the fanbase boon of being a disabled vet; Nyle was both deaf AND a very likeable guy who could actually dance really well.  I’m not sure anyone really considered Terra’s small stature as a disability, since she was actually a pretty good dancer; and things started to deteriorate once Bonner came along, as he actually was a creep, despite his “inspiring backstory”. Victoria gave it her best shot a year ago, but given that her disability wasn’t as visible as, say, Amy’s or Noah’s, I don’t know that it really carried her as far as it once might have (then again, Val also really phoned it in on the choreo towards the end, so that likely didn’t help either).  I guess the point I’m trying to get at is this: the “inspiring backstory” is becoming less and less of a novelty on this show with each passing season, particularly with contestants whose disabilities aren’t outwardly visible, so Danelle might not get as much support as she would have on an earlier season. Times change – the audience changes.  Things that were once new and novel become commonplace, and voting attitudes change.  I don’t think Danelle will be first, second, third, or even 4th out, but I’ll be interested to see just how far her story takes her, particularly if she’s really struggling with the dancing.

Is Juan Pablo William Levy 2.0? Is Evanna going to be the next Katherine Jenkins? Those are the two former contestants that come to mind when I look at Juan Pablo & Evanna. On the plus side, I already find Juan Pablo quite a bit more likeable and relatable than William, who I always found to be a bit reserved and even borderline awkward in interviews; his dancing was decent, but not as fantastic as the judges would have had you think. Juan Pablo seems like he might have more polish and technique on his side. Evanna seems like she’s got roughly the same level of dance experience as Katherine – they’ve probably dabbled in it at some point, but are more well-known for other things.  I think Evanna will be at least as good as Katherine, ability-wise – question is, will Keo be as good as Mark? I’m gonna go with a big fat “NO” on that one, unless Keo has had some sort of choreographic breakthrough over the summer.  He seemed to hit a small groove with Jodie 2.5 years ago, but that season was a bloodbath and she probably could have gone further on a different, less competitive season. Will his choreo/teaching skills hold up this time? We’ll see.

Early prediction for the final 3: DeMarcus, Juan Pablo, & Tinashe. If they take 4 to the finale – Milo or Bobby join the other 3.

First out: My gut says Nikki.  Outside chance of John. Whichever one doesn’t go in week 1, is probably toast during the double elim in week 2. Having Val will likely keep Nancy around for a bit longer than expected, but I would be surprised if she lasted past the midpoint of the season.

“Shocking” elim potential: Alexis screams “good dancer that will probably get eliminated because she can’t successfully crossover fanbases” to me. I don’t think her millions of IG followers will vote as hard as some think they will, and I don’t know that the general DWTS audience is going to embrace her strongly.

Dark horse: I feel like Bobby is going to surprise a lot of people.  I’m hearing a lot of people say Joe, but Joe strikes me as kinda awkward…especially after I saw this.  What has been seen cannot be unseen. 😛

So there we have it – my thoughts headed into Monday’s premiere.  What do you guys think? Share in the comments, and if you don’t mind, please take 5 minutes to go watch my cousin’s son, Kingston, do his first LEGO unboxing video on YouTube and throw him a like or a comment.  He’s been battling leukemia since March, and he’s officially CANCER FREE now and starting to feel like a regular kid again. Bonus: appearance by his equally adorable brother Lincoln, and they both have the most adorable Tennessee accents 😛

See you all Monday for the live blog!!! 🙂

Vote for Your Favorites in the PureDWTS Season 16 End-of-Season Awards!!!

Ok gang, now that the hype has had some time to die down…it’s time to vote for your favorites & least favorites in this season’s end-of-season awards 🙂 Pretty self-explanatory – just select what you think is the best option for each category and submit it.  “But Courtney, you don’t have my favorite listed!!!” Yes, there is an option for write-ins…HOWEVER…

…after the absolute chaos that was the HUNDREDS of write-in votes last season, I’m going to really crack down on the write-in votes.  If you absolutely MUST write-in a response other than the ones we have listed (and I took great pains to include the responses that I thought would be the most likely choices for each category), you MUST do so with a certain format in mind…for example, if you were trying to write in “Zendaya & Val’s Argentine tango” for the best dance, you MUST do it just like I typed it – captalize the first names of the celeb first, then the pro; throw an “&” in the middle, and then put the type of dance after that.  Examples of what not to do: “zendaya val tango” or “Zendaya tango” or “any dance Zendaya did!!!!” Yeah, especially that last one – you get to choose ONE DANCE, not 13.  Any responses that don’t fit the scheme I just laid out are getting thrown out – sorry guys, but I just don’t have the energy (or desire) to weed through 300+ nonsensical, misspelled, & obnoxious responses.  Got it? Good.  Now vote away 🙂 We’ll share the results in the coming weeks.  Read more..

Derek Hough Blogs about the Team Dance, His Partnership with Kellie, and Choreographing for World Champion Ice Dancers

This blog made me a bit worried for Team Samba initially, because it sounded like Derek was NOT taking the lead and that they couldn’t come to an agreement (in addition to some apparent tinkering from TPTB). We’ll see – usually when I get worried it turns out to be for nothing….but the other pros on his team don’t exactly have a stellar record for team dances. Just sayin’. 🙂   The rest of his blog? I get tired just reading them, frankly. Every week it’s a new project for this guy. 😉  Here are a few excerpts from TV Guide:

This week is another crazy, jam-packed one for us. We have our regular dance and the team dance, and I’m not going to lie — the team dance is in shambles right now. We’re not in good shape. We had rehearsal Tuesday after the show and we didn’t come out of it with a team dance. We have the samba, and Aly and Mark, Sean and Peta, and Andy and Sharna are on our team. (Yes, Team Pickler Dick is happening!) Basically the pros failed to commit to one theme. We had to conceptualize and we didn’t like any of them. We have a few ideas for entrances, but then we were told that we can’t do them! So that worked out well!

I feel bad because it was almost like a waste of rehearsal time and we only have one more together on Friday, so hopefully we’ll come up with something then. I’ve won every team dance I’ve been part of and when I looked back at them, the songs lent themselves to more dynamic dances. The routines were also a little longer as a group. We used to have 30 seconds together and now we have 19 seconds. I don’t know why they did that. It just seems so short as a group that I felt like we didn’t have a chance to do anything. In the past, we mapped out the whole routine in the first rehearsal, but this one, it was weird. We were always like, “I don’t know.” But we’ll make it happen!

I’m glad you enjoy my Kellie impression! I can do more. She cracks me up when she says that: “I’m not mad at you, but I’m mad at your ways.” I just want to be clear that I never get frustrated at her, or any of my partners for that matter. The frustration always comes from myself. It’s like a child. A baby wants to tell his mother that he’s hungry, but he can’t speak, so he cries. Then it’s a guessing game with the mom. Does he need his diaper changed? Does he need to be burped? Oh, he’s hungry. It’s the same way here. If I can’t find a way to help her make it click, the frustrating part is me not being able to find the analogy to help her say, “I got it!” It’s never with my partners. I know they’re trying their best and working hard. It’s just when I can’t find a way to help them, the frustration manifests as, “Ugh, just do it.” It’s easy when everything’s going smoothly. When you’re confident in the way you can relay a message, then you do it in a very calm way. But Kellie understood that I wasn’t mad at her. We really just have a blast. She’s truly wonderful.

This week, I also started working on a very special routine that’s not for the show. I’m choreographing a number for our world champion ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White to perform at the Olympics next year. They graciously asked me to do it and how could I say no? It’s truly an honor and they’re amazing. They won silver in Vancouver, are five-time U.S. champions and two-time world champions. If you’re not familiar with them, I highly recommend you check out some of their routines. They actually taught me a new move that I might have to do on the show. It’s a trick and Kellie would be able to do it. Maybe you’ll see it in a few weeks!

That’s all for now. Gotta brainstorm some team dance ideas!

Dancing With The Stars Season 16 Week 5 Post Elimination Media

Just a couple of post Dancing With The Stars results media things to share!! First up, here’s a new rumorfix interview with Andy!! He’s so thankful he made it to another week. You can see him interacting with his family too. It’s so cute.

Also, in case you missed it, Cheryl and D.L. were also on Good Morning America today. They chatted about the Boston Bombings and how hard it was to go on with the show afterwards. They also discussed their elimination. Even though D.L.has to burn his dancing shoes now, D.L. said he’s glad he met a new friend in Cheryl. Cheryl said the same and how he reminded her of how fun it is to do Dancing With The Stars. When asked who would win this season, they both said they thought Jacoby would win. More of this interview HERE.

Also, below is D.L., Cheryl, and Bruno being interviewed by Tony working for Extra last night (you have to skip to the :30 mark to view it)….

Lastly, below is Cheryl and D.L. with On The Red Carpet and Access Hollywood….

ADDING: Below is an Afterbuzz interview with these two as well… Read more..

DWTS Season 16, Week 5 – Who Got the Boot? (SPOILERS)

Fantastic opening number by Mark and Derek!! Very different…and pretty weird. Courtney and I think Emmy nomination. Provided that the outside choreographer (Stacey Tookey this time) doesn’t steal it again.

Did Selena think she was dancing?? Just asking. 🙂 Tom pimped Sean and Catherine’s wedding…but it was a set up for a joke so I forgive him. 😉  I have to say, I was getting lots of chuckles from Sean tonight. I’m starting to appreciate his sense of humor. And he likes Tristan so he can’t be all bad. 🙂  Val also gets points for funnies. More on that in the Cheese I’m sure. 😉

I was starting to regret not going with my gut when Ingo was put in jeopardy, right?? Anyway, Victor and DL were the bottom two and DL’s time finally ran out.

How did we all do??

Heidi: I was hoping for DL but figured it would be either Andy or Victor. My gut was telling me Ingo and Victor in the bottom 2. So close…

Courtney: Court said Victor was toast, with DL second from the bottom.

Vogue: Said Victor and DL in the bottom two, with Victor going home.

Winner? The whole audience…and me and Court were both pretty close. Vogue was too, really.  I need to start listening to my gut more and not waffle – I said that I felt like Andy was pulling himself out of jeopardy. So happy to be right on that one!!

ETA: By popular request: Mark and Derek’s opening pro dance – great!!

DWTS Season 16, Week 5 – Dancing by the Numbers

Okay, that turned out somewhat better than expected. For all the pimping of Maks, he ended up being a non-event – for me, anyway.  It’s rather odd, actually. I guess when you have nothing better to pimp, pimp one of the pro dancers who’s known for being a “bad boy” who’s not on this season. Ummmm…okay. I guess TPTB are just pandering to one group or another all the damn time. For those extremist Maks fans who read this site just so they can complain about us (yeah, it makes no sense to me either), the ratings were up LAST week, so if they are up again this week? Get over yourselves…it’s a trend, not an aberration. Reminds me of the Twihards who claimed they were tanking the MTV Awards this year by not watching…and they were actually UP significantly. Don’t jack with numbers, man. 🙂

Mah goodness, my favorites of the night were Jacoby and Kellie – fantastic. Loved it. Zendaya is being soured for me by the pimping…and seriously? The bent legs, the instability coming out of the turns…if this girl were dancing with Derek she’d be getting hosed for being a ringer. And we’d be getting trolls out the wazoo.  But since she’s dancing with Val she essentially has rainbows shooting out her ass.  The girl is a good dancer, yes. And I like her as a person. But I have to tell you, I’m seeing a LOT of people in the comments here and on twitter who are getting REALLY good at predicting exactly what will happen. Up for 2 weeks, down for two weeks…to come roaring back to get two tens. Hello – we’ve seen this storyboarding before.  I expect someone else will get a perfect 30 next week – either Aly or Kellie, most likely. Because we have to keep it a horse race at all costs, so it can’t be Zendaya. And, as predicted, Zendaya and Val get the encore.

In the “credit where credit is due” department – Kick ass opening dance, Lacey Schwimmer!! Excellent. Loved it. Girlfriend has been honing her group choreo skills over there in Vegas and it’s paid off.  MUCH better job than Sharna did last week on the women’s number, although Lacey has the benefit of time and no celeb partner. And Sharna is doing great with Andy.

Anyway….how did our dancers do?? Read more..

DWTS Tom Bergeron Interviewed About Boston Bombings, Last Night’s Show Hardest He’s Ever Done

Tony Dovolani interviewed host Tom Bergeron on the Boston bombings after Dancing With The Stars last night. Tom gets emotional…he’s sad and angry at the same time. It was the hardest show he’s ever done. Tony interviewed Aly too being she’s from Boston like Tom. More below. With that said, PureDWTS would like to extend our love, thoughts, and prayers to Tom, Aly, and everyone in and from Boston!!! The world unites in your suffering.xxxx

Louis Van Amstel And Sabrina Bryan Review Dancing With The Stars 16 Week 5

Louis Van Amstel and Sabrina Bryan weighed in on last night’s dances for Dancing With The Stars Week 5 on Good Morning America!! Below is some text from the link for who they think will be in the bottom three tonight and who is going home (please please, just don’t let it be Andy. Let it be D.L. or Victor instead. Andy is so much better than the other two.)

Who’s Going Home?

Sabrina: The bottom three, in my opinion, are Victor, DL, and Andy. With Victor having a turn-around this week, I think that it’s between our two comedians for who goes home this week. So far, Cheryl’s fans have saved her and DL from even hitting the bottom two, and as we all know with this competition, no one is safe.

Louis: I’m worried for DL, Victor, and Andy, but I think Victor goes home. He’s been in the bottom two twice now.

You can read more of what Louis and Sabrina think of each individual dance at Good Morning America!! I think GMA will also be posting some video coverage too with Sabrina and Louis shortly. Be watching for it here.

It’s Stevie Wonder Week On Dancing With The Stars Week 6, Interviews After Last Night’s Dance

What another great night of tv last night on Dancing With The Stars!! If you haven’t given us your reviews and ranked the couples, be sure you do so when you get time today in Courtney’s fun new Power Rankings Post here. Stay tuned for Heidi’s new “Numbers” post in a bit as well for her thoughts and predictions for who is going home tonight. For now, let’s get the couples reactions with George Pennacchio of On The Red Carpet. He finds out some dance info for next week already. Note too how Maks is interviewed as well….

First up, Kellie and Derek. Kellie is glad she didn’t “butcher” the dance last night and is happy with her dance. Derek talks of how much he loves Kellie and wants to her to be really good. He was so proud of her last night especially with shorter time to practice. Everyone will dance to a Stevie Wonder song next week and they have the Quick Step. They almost didn’t air the show last night because of the bombs in Boston, but, Derek is glad they did to offer some positivity and comfort. For more on these two, see Pure Derek Hough.

Jacoby tried to point his toes last night, but God made his feet for a reason. He’s excited to bring some “soul” next week with a Stevie Wonder song. George praises Jacoby’s positive attitude. Their prayers go out to Boston.

Maks joins Zendaya and Val in their interview with George. He thinks it was a good idea to bring back the older pros and the response was amazing last night. He also never said he “left”. He also says his new relationship with General Hospital isn’t over. Val talks of how great it was to have Maks and Anna join them. He loved the energy and it was great to get their help. Zendaya says this was the hardest week so far and she is so happy and thankful for last night’s 10’s. If Maks were a betting man, he sees the next Beyonce in Zendaya. George asks them about next week, but, Val doesn’t let out much info. He wants to savor last night’s moments. Maks explains the differences between he and Val’s choreographing styles.

Andy and Sharna! George praises Andy for having the best entrance ever on Dancing With The Stars. Even though they only got 6’s, Andy said they had the best time. Sharna said the song itself made their Paso Doble the most challenging to dance. If they make it to next week, they hope they get Stevie’s “Superstition” song. Andy is a little down and hopes he still gets to stay on the show for the fun he’s having.
