Louis Van Amstel Discusses the Couples After DWTS Season 16, Week 2 Performances

Bear with me – Vogue is the one who can get creative with both the titles and the text, not me, and she’s busy this morning. 🙂  Louis has a lot to say about the couples after seeing them dance – pretty much the same as what we’ve been saying: Kellie and Zendaya = Awesome and DL = in trouble.  First, from GMA, a couple excerpts – click the link to read his whole blog:

Wynonna Judd and Tony Dovolani’s Quickstep:   Looking at their package, it looks like Wynona is going to have a great journey on ‘DWTS’ this season. Her honesty and sincerity is going to help her grow. I so appreciate the effort Wynonna puts into her dancing, but I would like to see her show her joy more, like she said she had when doing her Cha Cha. I also would have liked to see a dress like a police costume rather than pants and sneaker-like shoes. The dancing was good and proper when in hold. Don’t play it safe, though. You have nothing to lose, only to gain an amazing experience. I hope Wynonna stays around for a long time because she’s so inspirational to many. Tony, I actually like that moustache on you. There was nice feedback from the judges. I totally agree with every word from Carrie Ann and agree just slightly with Len about the close hold being far apart at times. Scores are okay.

Zendaya and Valentin Chmerkovskiy’s Jive:  She’s so cute but she can’t stand on high heels? This is going to be interesting having the fastest Latin dance. OK, high heels a problem? Not at all. Fantastic jive, great content, awesomely (yes, I made up a new word) entertaining. Even though Zendaya’s limbs are so long and sometimes a little sloppy, she is so fast and high energy. I’d also put her and Val into the top three! Good for you girl. Age is just a number, if you’re younger or older. Amazing and well-deserved scores! High scores don’t save, so VOTE VOTE VOTE.

D.L. Hughley and Cheryl Burke’s Quickstep:  “DWTS” is “Hunger Games” in tights? Brilliant! Stop complaining D.L.  You’re losing time to rehearse and don’t forget that 50 percent of the score is public vote!  I hope his dance is going to knock the roof of the place. That was actually not a bad quickstep at all and an OK hold.  He remembered his steps. D.L.’s bottom was back the whole time, but it kind of looked cute. What’s with Carrie Ann tonight?  I love her with all her comments. You can be honest and say if something isn’t good, but still be nice. D.L.’s comments with Brooke put him back on the map. Hopefully, D.L.’s video package won’t hurt them too much. Scores are OK, maybe all sixes.

Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough’s Jazz:  How gorgeous is Kellie Pickler?  They’re a hot couple. I had no idea Kellie could dance like that. Look at her feet again when she does her leg extension! Wow. She was fantastic, amazing and awesome. What else can I say? She’s the one to beat by miles. Knowing Kellie as a singer, what would her concert look like if Derek would choreograph a full-on production number for her?  Wow!  She’d give Lady Gaga and Madonna a run for their money! Her scores are low. At least three nines, if not a 10. I know it’s only week two, but this was the best performance.

At Hollywood.com, Louis gives his opinion on the best and worst of DWTS Week 1 (again, click the link to read the whole thing):

This season, DWTS has introduced two new styles of dance to the competition: jazz and contemporary. Because contemporary dance, performed barefoot, is typically more emotional than technical , its inclusion is causing some controversy in the competition. “The new style, contemporary, is definitely causing tension, and I think that’s the exact reason for the producers to do it,” van Amstel tells Hollywood.com. “I do think from a pure dancing point of view, it is comparing apples to oranges between a ballroom and a latin dance, but at least they’re both within ballroom dancing. And now you’re adding contemporary.”

The dance van Amstel is referring to was 16-year-old Disney Channel star Zendaya Coleman and her partner, Val Chmerkovskiy. “Because it was so hard to judge contemporary, I think that Val and his partner did great. But then again, it’s a young girl and it looks like she has dance experience,” van Amstel says. “But I think from what we’ve seen, Kellie Pickler [and partner Derek Hough] stole the night. I mean, the girl looked stunning. She literally could have walked out onto a competitive ballroom dance floor. She kicked ass.”

As for Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman, van Amstel thinks she will only get better from here. “I really hope that she’s going to use this to add to her own training, to become more artistic and expressive within movement rather than just execution of tricks,” van Amstel says. “I think her journey is going to be very interesting to see the progress that she’s going to make. Apparently she was really nervous, but I would definitely not count her out. That girl just needs to get over her nerves.”

PureDWTS Season 16 Week 2 – Media After The Dance, A Few Dances Revealed For Week 3

What a great night of TV again! Let’s get straight to the On The Red Carpet interviews with George Pennacchio….

First, Kelly and Derek! Kellie said she felt more comfortable last night, but, the mirrors on her outfit cut Derek (lol). Derek has more daring moves planned for the future. They are happy with last night’s dance and plan to work hard next week. Derek wants to work to the full capacity and not cut Kellie short for what she can do.

George tells Jacoby that he thinks the judges love his charm, attitude, and fun factor. Karina says she and Jacoby haven’t had a conflict yet and they both respect each other. Jacoby wants to keep getting better and he plans to work hard. Check out his face at the end when Karina says he’s given away their strategy (priceless). He mentions practicing the Rumba and the Jazz (does this mean they have a Rumba next week?).

Zendaya says this whole experience of dancing on Dancing With The Stars is so fun. She loves performing, the work, the judges comments, etc. George asks them about their high scores, but, Val says they don’t plan to think or concentrate on them or how good Zendaya might be. Val says to “get it” and to keep going and reaching expectations, they have to focus on dancing and working really hard (Val, that’s right. Keep this up!). Zendaya agrees.

George asks Andy what it was like having his former “Less Than Perfect” cast mates there for support last night. They talk of how they are “family”. Andy said he cried (awwww) after their dance. He got caught up in all the emotion from what they’ve all been through and was so glad they and his family were there last night. Sharna talks of the creative effort put into their dance and how she and Andy worked together. For whatever happens tonight, Andy is happy for this journey. To see George also interview Andy’s former “Less Than Perfect” cast mates about Andy and the night, see this link.

George says the judges love Ingo!! He and Kym are happy about being in 5th place. It gives them somewhere to go. Kym loves that Ingo is “musical” and can pick it up in his dancing. He loves this show and glad he took the challenge on. If they make it, they have the Paso Doble which they planned to work on last night. Read more..

DWTS 16, Week 2 – Power Rankings

Well jazz/jive/quickstep/WTF? night left me with some mixed feelings – some couples really rose to the challenge, while others really showed their weaknesses; I feel like some couples got too caught up in having a “theme”, while others seemed to have meltdowns in rehearsal.  And of course – the judges conveniently chastised some couples for things that they seemed to turn a blind eye to in other couples.  Let’s get right into it…

1.) Zendaya  & Val – As talented as this girl is, I did have my doubts about her fanbase – but after she trended worldwide on Twitter, I’m wondering if she might have the juice to really go all the way this season.  My god, those LEGS – if I had legs that gorgeous, I would wear shorts year-round, regardless of the temperature, because they are GORGEOUS.  Oddly enough, though they actually seemed to cause a few problems in this dance – like Val said, with legs that long, you have a harder time doing quick movements…and I felt like Zendaya did have a few moments where she really had to haul ass to get her legs where they needed to be, and she did seem to be taking some wide steps to accommodate those long legs.  Thankfully, they should only be an asset from here on out, since she has gotten jive out of the way 🙂 Loved the attitude and sass she had, too – really like this girl, and really like what Val is doing with her.  If they can keep it engaging and age-appropriate, they could go far.

2.) Kellie & Derek – As cool as this routine was and as well-executed as it may have been, I’d call it more of a contemporary/jazz fusion than pure jazz.  Nothing wrong with that – none of the 3 that did jazz tonight had a “pure” jazz routine – but I saw flexed ankles and more contemporary-type lifts, and in my head I heard my college dance instructor screaming “Point those toes! I don’t want to see any flexed feet, this is jazz 203, not modern 203!!!” Very cool, moody routine, and Kelly is made of rubber, I swear…plus she seems to be handling anything Derek throws at her.  But for whatever reason (and this is unrelated to whether it’s jazz or not), I was just left wanting a bit more – maybe it was the music and how there seemed to be this big build up in the beginning, and then it just ended, maybe it was the fierce hand section at the beginning and then the more flowy end, I don’t know…but I don’t really think it was my favorite Derek routine.  But Kellie is impressing me, because had I not known better, that could have been Allison Holker dancing that routine…she was that good. Dancing with the Stars Season 16, Week 2 – Who’s Dancing What…and When?

Week 2…the week of Jive?/Jazz?/Jive?/WTF?? and the Quickstep. 🙂 Was I the only one that heard both Jive and Jazz with regard to a few couples?? Is it that the media expects to hear Jive so that’s what they say, or do the stars expect to hear Jive so they say Jive or is there monkey business?? It didn’t help that Sharna said “the jazz” which made people hear Jive since one doesn’t typically put “the” in front of “jazz” without also having “dance” after it. I guess we’ll never know for sure.

ETA: Almost forgot – this was on the DWTS Official site:

There different dances will be tackled by the couples on Monday night, the Jive, the Quickstep and for the first time in the Dancing competiton, Jazz.

Judges will be looking for the following elements in the “Jazz” dances: jazz hands, kicks, leaps, rolled shoulers, quick turns and sideways shuffling.  It’s destined to be a night of high energy the ballroom with all three dances!

Please note – the typo is theirs. They also call Victor “Victory”. LOL. Ahem. And some had the nerve to call US unprofessional!! HA! But note that they include a description of what they’ll be looking for with Jazz – I’d think they were listening to me, if not for the fact that they neglect to do that for the other two dances. 🙂 And why is that??

Here are the dancers and their dances. note, this is currently in last weeks dance order.

ETA: I’ve been right on the money with the last few guesses. 🙂 Zendaya keeps her “top of the hour” slot.

ETA 2: Gotta say – kinda surprised by Lisa’s slot in the show…

Aly and Mark – Quickstep

DL and Cheryl – Quickstep

Kellie and Derek – Jazz
Dancing 12th
Voting # 1-800-8683401

Once again, we have an odd number of Jives relative to Jazz. Why not four of each style? Of course, if you had had four of each of Foxtrot, Cha Cha and contemporary that would have still made divvying up the dances this week difficult. How do you decide which Cha Cha-er gets Quickstep and which gets Jazz?? And what are they trying to accomplish with their selections?? Look at this table of the dances assigned thus far:

Week 1 and 2 Dances

So, what do you think?? How are they splitting it up? Are they once again making it so that each dance style has one person they consider cannon fodder? And who is that person? I think that Jacoby is a clear winner with Jazz over Quickstep – I’m not so sure the same can be said for Sean, but he’s lucky to get it out of the way now, when there are a lot of dancers likely to leave before him.  I think Ingo wins with QS over Jive because he’s so tall. I think Lisa and Dorothy lose with Jive – but again, better to get it out of the way now, for Dorothy at least. Kellie and Zendaya I think would have been fine and dandy either way.

LOL of the day today:  Oksana tweeted this and I about swallowed my tongue. 😀

PureDWTS A Shake Up In Las Vegas Odds For Season 16 Week 2 – What Do You Think?

Think of success as a game of chance in which you have control over the odds. As you begin to master concepts in personal achievement, you are increasing your odds of achieving success. ~Bo Bennet on beating the odds

Sports Bovada has posted their new set of odds for Dancing With The Stars Season 16 Week 2. As always with the first dance, the odds get shaken up which they did so again. Though I’m shocked the odds makers are putting Aly Raisman so high. Was her first dance really that worthy of a second placing? However, huge kudos to Andy Dick making a big jump. I think Andy is a better dancer than Sean (and more liked), so I hope to see him placed even higher next week?

Zendaya Coleman 2/1
Aly Raisman 7/2
Kellie Pickler 7/2
Jacoby Jones 5/1
Dorothy Hamill 7/1
Ingo Rademacher 15/1
Sean Lowe 15/1
Andy Dick 50/1
Victor Ortiz 50/1
Lisa Vanderpump 75/1
Wynonna Judd 75/1
D.L. Hughley 100/
1

First Las Vegas Odds to compare:

Aly Raisman 7/2
Kellie Pickler 5/1
Zendaya Coleman 5/1
Jacoby Jones 13/2
Ingo Rademacher 7/1
Victor Ortiz 15/2
Dorothy Hamill 9/1
D.L. Hughley 10/1
Wynonna Judd 15/1
Lisa Vanderpump 20/1
Andy Dick 33/1

Also, and for fun, below are the odds from Wynn Las Vegas currently. I think these are really out of whack and I question if they even saw the first dances for how high they put Wynonna and how low they put Zendaya. 😯 Also, shouldn’t Victor and Wynonna be placed more at the end? D.L. should be placed last in my opinion.

KELLIE PICKLER Derek Hough 9 TO 2
ALY RAISMAN Mark Ballas 6 TO 1
JACOBY JONES Karina Smirnoff 7 TO 1
DOROTHY HAMILL Tristan MacManus 8 TO 1
ZENDAYA COLEMAN Valentin Chmerkovskiy 9 TO 1
VICTOR ORTIZ LINDSAY ARNOLD 11 TO 1
WYNONNA JUDD Tony Dovolani 14 TO 1
INGO RADEMACHER Kym Johnson 15 TO 1
SEAN LOWE Peta Murgatroyd 20 TO 1
D.L. HUGHLEY Cheryl Burke 25 TO 1
ANDY DICK Sharna Burgess 30 TO 1
LISA VANDERPUMP GLEB SAVCHENKO 35 TO 1

So, what do you make of this week’s interesting shake up in odds? Let’s see what Heidi and Court think too….

Heidi:  I think that the top set of odds has the first five eliminations right, and maybe even in the correct order, although I would be inclined to switch Wynonna and Victor. But after that it gets really tricky. I think someone they have in the top three is going to get bumped for Jacoby, although I’m not AS convinced as Courtney that he will win. I’m hedging. 🙂 By all rights, based on last week, those ladies should be the top 3 but I think that Aly will get bumped for Jacoby.  As for the middle of the pack? They feel pretty middle of the pack to me. Of course, everything could change in week 3 when they suddenly don’t have as much time to get a dance down. Since they appear to have changed Derek and Kellie’s dance on them well after they learned Jive, they could be in trouble as well. We’ll see! Oh, and as for Wynn…I seem to recall they got last season right at least in the final week – question is, did they have it right all season long? Your odds of calling the final right is pretty easy – you have a 3 in 1 shot at it.  This Wynn odds chart is just a mess. I don’t think they have a single thing right.

Courtney: Zendaya is good, no doubt, but we still have yet to see whether she whether she’ll be able to break the “Disney curse” – I’d say Roshon was just as talented as she was, and that poor kid was in the bottom two seemingly every week.  Haven’t seen anything from Aly yet that makes me think she’s gonna finish that high – and I still think Jacoby is the only shoo-in for the finale, and the most likely to win it all.  As for the bottom of the odds – I think Wynonna probably has a slight edge over Lisa, but other than that, I think they got it about right. Who the hell knows what’s going on at the Wynn – the fact that they think D.L. still has a fighting chance makes me think they’re smoking the wacky tobacky.  🙂

Tristan MacManus On DWTS Week 2: “another week of experience will be crucial”

A few media things on Dorothy Hamill and Tristan MacManus!! First, Dorothy Hamill tells News 8’s Erin Ovalle in Portland, Oregon that taking on Dancing With The Stars has been “really scary” being she doesn’t know the first thing about dancing. She’s hoping she doesn’t make a fool of herself. This interview was filmed right before the premiere, but, it’s a good one to watch now too. I love how humble she is. You can also see some cool shots of Tristan and Dorothy in rehearsals. You can watch it in full HERE.

Also, MacManiacs.org interviewed Tristan this week. Below he tells us how their second dance (the Jive) is coming along. He also sizes up the cast.

You have the Jive coming up for Week 2. How is that coming along?

Jive is taking its time alright but looking forward to it. It’s a lively, fun dance so happy faces make a difference when it comes to nerves I think against a more straight-faced restricted ballroom hold dance. It’s gonna be a lot faster than last week for sure so I can’t wait to see what Dorothy can do.

There seem to be a lot of very strong contenders in Season 16. How would you size up the cast?

The cast is strong personality wise, and it’s easy to write people off straight away but I’m sure another week of experience will be crucial, and the thick skin will bite back for a lot of people.

So true and I like how he words that!! You can read this new fun interview in full at MacManiacs.org .
