DWTS Season 15, Week 2 – Power Rankings

Oh jive/quickstep week – a week that usually has the potential to make me cringe and shake my head.  Unfortunately, this season was no different 🙁 The lines have been drawn, and the judges are making some pretty clear distinctions in their scoring – at the top we have the “chosen ones” who can do no wrong in the judges’ eyes (Gilles & Peta, Sabrina & Louis), then the good dancers that the judges seem to critique/score more harshly to give the impression of “wanting them to improve” (Shawn & Derek, Apolo & Karina, Melissa & Tony), the mediocre-to-good dancers that the judges seem reluctant to really critique/score harshly (Kelly & Val, Emmitt & Cheryl, Helio & Chelsie), the mediocre-to-bad dancers that don’t really get love from the judges but still get the votes to stay (Joey & Kym, Kirstie & Maks, Bristol & Mark)…and then you have Drew, whom I’m almost convinced the judges/TPTB don’t really give a rat’s ass whether he stays or goes.  All in all, this illustrious all-star season is beginning to leave a bad taste in my mouth – and we’ve still got 8 more weeks to go after tomorrow! And please tell me I’m not the only one that’s getting sick of seeing that damn 7.5 paddle…

1.) Gilles & Peta – As great of a dancer as Gilles may be, I just find myself getting rubbed the wrong way by some of his behavior so far this season – and I’m beginning to feel the same about Peta, too.  He complains about how injured he is and how much pain he’s in all week, then performs one of the most intense & forceful jives I’ve ever seen on the show – and then he has this bizarre, kinda choked-up “moment” up in the celebraquarium that just kinda left me going “Huh?” Not gonna lie – it was bordering on Jaleel levels of awkwardness.  While I do think he did a really good jive (notice I didn’t say “great”), I think Gilles may have caught a bit of the Sabrina Bug this week – every kick & flick just felt so HARD and deliberate.  And I’m not sure if it was just the fringe on her costume or what, but Peta seemed to be dancing extra forcefully, too – and as trivial as this may seem, I seriously hope the makeup team dials back the eyeliner next week, because it gives Peta this very harsh, glaring look when she’s not smiling widely. Anywho, these two seem like they’ve got several weeks of safety ahead of them, with the level of favoritism they seem to be getting from the judges & TPTB.  I guess I just hope Gilles can have some sort of breakthrough and regain some of the charm that made him so endearing in season 8…

2.) Shawn & Derek – This jive was pretty much everything I expected – cute, high-energy, clean, & entertaining.  Even though I had already gotten a bit of a heads-up that Shawn had much better endurance than Derek, I was still kinda impressed by how…not winded she was afterward.  Just sort of a “Meh…ain’t no thang!” look on her face 😛 Now while I enjoyed the Hairspray theme and a lot of the choreography that went with it, I have to say – I found myself wanting a little more basic, in-hold jive content, a little bit less of the 60’s-y themed open choreography.  And I wonder if this may be a problem with pretty much everyone who goes for a themed routine this season – everyone feels so compelled to keep the bar high that they feel the need to throw in a lot of unique choreography.  I guess that’s one way in which I agreed with Len a bit in his critique – everything in this routine was satisfactory, but I don’t know that any of it really exceeded my expectations.  Guess I’m just hoping to be blown away during iconic dances week next week, since the couples have been instructed to “push the envelope”. I just hope Derek can “push the envelope” while still including a lot of basic choreography.

3.) Sabrina & Louis – In quite possibly the biggest judging gaffe of the night, Gilles & Peta’s biggest competition for “most off-putting” couple this season managed to walk away with the high score after doing a quickstep that, while good, left me confused.   I will give Sabrina credit for calming down quite a bit this week – there wasn’t nearly as much overdancing this time.  But I did notice a couple instances where she seemed to fight the urge to really hit things hard, and a couple flicks seemed to come out a bit harder than they probably should have.  My other big complaint? I felt like they stopped every 5 seconds for Sabrina to pose in a picture line!!! Talk about disrupting the flow of a dance – I liked what she did in-hold and she did have great posture, but it just felt so disjointed because Louis seemed to be throwing her into an oversway every other measure.  For that reason, I think she was grossly overscored – considering that Apolo had, IMO, much more difficult content, which he executed with far more finesse than Sabrina did her content.  And WTF was up with that beginning sequence when they came running in??? If it was accidental, they must really be in la-la land; if it was intentional, WTF?! But as I saw many of you saying, I feel like the fix is in – somebody with influence really wants Sabrina to stick around.  Which makes me wonder if maybe Sabrina isn’t exactly “killing it” in the votes department.  But I think time will tell, as we whittle down the weaker dancers… Read more..

DWTS2012 Drew Lachey’s New Sense of Focus And Determination Cue “Rocky”

Drew Lachey writes of how this past week getting ready for week 2 of Dancing With The Stars has been an “eventful – and stressful – week, to say the least”. He’s not ready to go home and he and Anna have “turned it up a notch”. Below is more on their Jive tonight “cue the Rocky music”.

After finding ourselves in the bottom two, and facing elimination, Anna and I have turned things up a notch. We have always worked hard, but there has been a new sense of focus and determination (cue the Rocky music). This is a new week with a new dance, and it is going to be a new outcome … hopefully.

Our dance this week is the jive – a fast, rhythmic, challenging dance that takes a lot of stamina. I am very excited about this because these are the kinds of dances that I feel I can do pretty well. I really like our music, but this ain’t your grandmama’s jive. Everything about it is a little rough around the edges. Just the way I like it.

The energy around the rehearsal studio is still fun, but you can tell that all of the couples are really focused on this week. Last week was a wake-up call that anybody could go home at any time.

I can only speak for myself, but I am nowhere close to being ready to leave the ballroom. This show is a lot of fun, and I love dancing with Anna. Hopefully we’ll be able to impress the judges and the audience with our jive and remember everybody: vote, vote, vote.

A Season Of “Hot Men” On Dancing With The Stars, Good Morning America Interviews

Gearing up for Week 2’s dancing, some of the couples of Dancing With The Stars were interviewed on Good Morning America today. They talk on preparing for week 2’s dances on Dancing With The Stars. They also discuss of who is the “sexiest male contestant” and pose some sexy moves. I can’t embed the video since it gives some script errors at the site lately, but, you can watch it here. Too fun!

So, which male celeb this season do you think is the most “sexy” on Dancing With The Stars? That would be Apolo Ohno for me!! 😀

DWTS All Stars, Week 2 – Who’s Dancing What…and When??

Week 2 – the Jive and the Quickstep. Normally, if you had the Foxtrot in Week 1, you have the Jive in week 2. If you had the Cha Cha Cha you are dancing the Quickstep. That appears to be holding true for this season as well. 🙂 There’s at least one, probably two train wrecks in this bunch…most of you can guess the first one. 🙂

Please note: these are not in any kind of order yet. The post will be updated through the day tomorrow with running order and songs, if we have them.

ETA: Almost forgot that Gilles and Mark spoiled their own songs so I might as well add them now.

ETA2: Shawn got a great song…but Black Betty? I guess that is a good quickstep song. Trying to visualize….

ETA3: A good choreographer could do something very interesting with Melissa’s song. Question is…can Tony??

ETA4: Melissa going first…a good shakeup to the dance order?? We’ll see.

ETA5: Dance Dance??? Oh boy.

ETA6: What a shock – an ABC employee gets the second best spot.

ETA7: And ANOTHER ABC employee in the pimp spot. Predictable. Maybe Apolo and Shawn are running away with it.

ETA8: If I’m wrong about where I guessed Bristol and Shawn are, I’m going to be PISSED, whether running order matters or not. Two weeks in a row in the worst position?? The shaft.

ETA9: Whew! I was right. I don’t like being pissed off. Louis says in his blog, which Vogue is posting soon, that Bristol is dancing second.  Thanks to teichka for the heads up on that.

ETA10: A few last minute song spoilers…sort of.  Turns out Joey is actually dancing to a big-band style cover Radiohead’s “Creep” done by a comedian named Richard Cheese…whose name I already like 😉 I know, Radiohead doesn’t exactly conjure up thoughts of lively, happy jumping & hopping characteristic of quickstep, but I actually think this version works REALLY well for quickstep.  Sort of genius on Joey’s part 😎 As for Kirstie, all we know is that her song is entirely in French – and that Maks has her playing the character of a French prostitute.  Knowing just that, I already think her jive has the potential to be all kinds of WIN.  😉 -Court-

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. Anna Trebunskaya Helps Best Friends Animal Society, DWTS Interviews With Drew Lachey

Today Anna Trebunskaya did a sweet segment on pet adoption in association with Best Friends Animal Society on Access Hollywood. You’ll have an “awww” moment when you watch this….

Also, be sure to catch a video of Drew Lachey at People.com where he talks about dancing on Dancing With The Stars again. He also mentions how his daughter can’t get use to Drew’s darker color of skin. So cute!! Here is a take from the link…

The tanning is what the former mirrorball trophy champ expects to confuse his daughter the most.

“The skin tone might throw her off a little bit,” he says, adding with a smile, “But she likes Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so she might just think I’m an Oompa Loompa.”

The bedazzled costumes, on the other hand, aren’t an anticipated concern for the star.

“My daughter is very theatrical,” Lachey explains. “She loves her little musicals at school, and being in dance class, and the costumes and all that stuff. She’s seen me in costume for Spamalot, she’s seen me in costume for Hairspray. She’s probably going to be like, ‘Oh, what are you doing? Cleaning the house?’”

If interested, you’ll be able to catch Drew on Huffpost Live today at 3:20pm Pacific time here.

We will also tease week 3’s “Iconic Dance Night” with a medley of iconic routines from seasons past, performed by The Troupe as well as talented dancers Anya Garnis, Jaymz Tuaileva, Lacey and Benji Schwimmer. DWTS Make-Up Releases Photos, Which Costumes Were Your Favorite From Week One?

Dancing With The Stars Make-Up has released some fun takes of the cast “behind the scenes” preparing for the premiere. Below is Kym Johnson and Karina Smirnoff. You can view more pics at the link as well as descriptions for how they did their make-up. Keep checking the link. They may add more pics. So, from all the couples, who looked or wowed you the most with their costuming? Who could use improvement? I have to give it to Maks and Kirstie. The color of her Fox Trot gown was a stunner and looked beautiful on her. For improvement, I’m going to say Drew and Anna. The gray and lighter blues were beautiful, but, they were also “forgettable”. I hope they come out next week with something more showstopping and dominant in color and style.

Dancing With The Stars Season 15: Las Vegas Odds Going Into Week 2

The odds makers are placing their bets again for who will win the Dancing With The Stars All Stars at Sports Bovada. As you can see, they’ve got Emmitt and Apolo neck in neck in first and second place. They’ve put Melissa and Bristol tied for last…

Emmitt Smith 3/2
Apolo Anton Ono 7/2
Gilles Marini 11/2
Helio Castroneves 11/2
Shawn Johnson 8/1
Joey Fatone 15/1
Kelly Monaco 20/1
Kirstie Alley 20/1
Sabrina Bryan 25/1
Drew Lachey 30/1
Bristol Palin 50/1
Melissa Rycroft 50/1

So, do the odds makers have it right or wrong?

In my opinion, they probably have it right on the top two currently, but, they are under estimating Shawn Johnson. She should be higher, while Helio should be lower. I also think they are totally wrong for putting Melissa Rycroft in last place. I think she should be placed in the middle somewhere. I also think Kelly is going to make a strong showing and should be placed higher. Let’s get Miss Heidi’s and Court’s thoughts and be sure to tell us what you think in the comment section too.

Heidi: Totally don’t buy Emmitt in the winning position. I don’t think he’s got that kind of juice. I still think this is going to come down to Apolo, Gilles and Shawn, with Apolo winning. That said…Gilles could find himself replaced with Emmitt if he doesn’t lighten up. While he is beautiful to look at, I’m not finding him charming or fun this season AT ALL.  And as William Levy can tell you, good looks are only good for third place in a regular season. In this one?? Maybe not so much. Lucky for him he’s likely going to get some “help” since he’s a card carrying member of the ABC family. Literally. 🙂  The bottom?? I’m thinking it should be Bristol and Drew, but the reality probably IS Drew and Melissa.  If they keep doing a real bottom two, we’ll soon find out. 🙂

Courtney: I’m not convinced at this point that Emmitt is gonna walk away with that trophy – and definitely not with odds that good. I don’t think one good dance in week one is indicative of much right now, considering that most of the couples did pretty well – aside from Pam, no one really did terribly this week.  I’m waiting for a dance like to jive to come along so we can really see what Emmitt’s made of – we know he’s got a great personality, now the question is: can he hang with the youngin’s? Because he is one of the older contestants this season, and like Kirstie, I think he may struggle with endurance.  Still puzzled as to why they have Helio so high.  I would put Apolo & Gilles at about even odds right now, but if Gilles’ whining about injuries, phone numbers, etc. continues, I would expect Apolo to begin to edge him out.  And really & truly, at this point I’d put Drew at the bottom – because he clearly is lacking in the votes department, and I’m not so sure that’s going to improve in the coming week.
