DWTS Season 25, Week 3 – Dancing by the Numbers!

Oh boy. We’re in some dangerous territory come this Monday night. I understand (and appreciate) the desire to keep last Monday night light hearted, without any kind of threat of elimination, due to the awful events in Las Vegas, but the margins are so freakin’ close that literally any one of about half the cast could be eliminated, depending on how ardent their fanbase is (or isn’t).  This could get interesting. And that makes it all that much harder to call. I’m batting about 500 right now and I don’t think I’ll improve my stats much on Monday.

FYI, the running order issue from the first three episodes seems to have resolved itself, for this week at least. the average score in the first half of the show was nearly identical to that in the last half of the show (0.33 points difference).  We’ll see if that lasts. It was getting quite annoying.

So, let’s look at what we’re dealing with. Read more..

DWTS Season 25, Week 4 – Who’s Dancing What…and When?

Week 4 already??? My, how time flies! I guess this means it’s time for “Most Memorable Year”, a week often filled with sob stories, contemporaries and other maudlin stuff. Hopefully it will be uplifting instead of draining this season. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t. Ya never know until you get there.

Winners this week: Anyone doing contemporary, except those with a partner who isn’t good at contemporary. 🙂 Nikki and Jordan should be fine….Nick? Hard to say. Last time Peta wanted to do a contemporary she got outside help. Props to her for owning her own weak spot. Sharna also ought to do well with Derek, having Jazz.

Losers this week: Anyone doing a dance with rules competing against all those who have none. Judges have already shown they have no ability to make this distinction when it comes to scoring. That said, those with Foxtrot and Waltz will likely be fine. Drew and Jive?? Has potential to be either a disaster or illuminating that he really has gotten the hang of it. Vanessa and Rumba? Well, I would say that she’ll smash it, but that’s a pretty close dance to do with someone you’re struggling with. Could be very challenging. Read more..

DWTS Season 25, Week 2 (Tuesday Night) – Dancing by the Numbers!

Well, what to say about last Tuesday night? The scoring, combined with Who’s Dancing What, seems to indicate that Nick, Vanessa and Sasha are the current producer favorites.  Although I don’t think most dances are handed out last minute, I do think their favorites are picked pre-season, so there you go.

That said, I don’t know how much of a favor you’re doing Vanessa by giving her Jazz when it’s fairly well documented that her pro can’t hang in the non-ballroom/latin dance styles. He would certainly benefit from some classes if he’s going to continue on DWTS. Or at least get a ghost. Nick, on the other hand, may fare better because I don’t remember Peta sucking at Jazz or contemporary. Gleb? I don’t remember his choreo for either Jazz or Contemporary – I guess that’s not really a bad sign, since I don’t remember anything truly awful. 🙂 Read more..

DWTS Season 25, Week 3 – Who’s Dancing What…and When?

Guilty Pleasures week. I seem to recall this was something of a trainwreck last time, although I could be wrong. What to expect is probably a whole bunch of the troupe plus a whole bunch of props and probably not much DANCING.

Winners: I’m sure it’s totally a coincidence that Sasha, Nick, and Vanessa all got Jazz. :::rolls eyes::: Well, at least others will save it for when the competition gets tougher. As for Lindsey getting Jive – I don’t know if it’s necessarily a “win” but that style seems perfect for her personality.

Losers: Nikki doing V. Waltz?? Didn’t she JUST do waltz this past week?? Hosed. And Frankie doing Samba?? He can probably handle it, but his first latin is the hardest one??

ETA: And the running order is starting to come out.  Cheryl and TO are doing alright, ain’t they?

Nikki Bella and Artem – Viennese Waltz (Song: “Love on the Brain” by Rihanna)
1-800-868-3409

Victoria Arlen and Val – Quickstep (Song: “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba)
1-800-868-3413

Derek Fisher and Sharna – Cha Cha (Song: “Fresh Prince of Bel Aire” by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince)
1-800-868-3403

Sasha Pieterse and Gleb – Jazz (Song: “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch” by the Four Tops)
1-800-868-3410

Nick Lachey and Peta – Jazz (Song: “Jump! (For My Love)” by The Pointer Sisters)
1-800-868-3408

Jordan Fisher and Lindsay – Charleston (Song: “Glory Days” by Michael Giacchino)
1-800-868-3406

Drew Scott and Emma – Argentine Tango (Song: “Red Right Hand” by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds)
1-800-868-3404

Vanessa Lachey and Maks – Jazz (Song: “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper)
1-800-868-3412

Terrell Owens and Cheryl – Salsa (Song: “The Breaks” by Kurtis Blow)
Dancing 10th
1-800-868-3411

Lindsey Stirling and Mark – Jive (Song: “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” by Wham!)
1-800-868-3407

Frankie Muniz and Whitney – Samba (Song: “It’s Gonna Be Me” by NSync)
1-800-868-3405

DWTS Season 25, Week 2 (Monday Night) – Dancing by the Numbers!

Well, if that wasn’t the most f@#$@# up bunch of scoring then I don’t know what is. Maybe I shouldn’t tempt fate and make it even worse tonight, but damn – that was just bad. Who in the world besides a delusional fangirl believes that Vanessa and Victoria should be tied with Jordan at the top of the leaderboard with Lindsey a full three points below them?  Don’t get me wrong, I like all the people involved, but there ain’t no way those two ladies are on par with Jordan and that far ahead of Lindsey, EVEN with the breaking of hold.  These judges desperately need Mark, with Derek very unlikely to ever return, and they are NOT doing a good job of rewarding the best choreographer they have – who choreographed an excellent dance last night. And Lindsey’s dress was just freakin’ amazing. No idea how they did that, but man!

My only critique of Mark was the break in hold and spending a beat too long in the “cocoon”.  Victoria? Her legs were too soft throughout the dance (watch her kick) – yes, I get why that might be the case, but in the past the judges went on and on (and on and on and on) about needing to score differently abled contestants the same as everyone else, yet are doing nothing but gushing over Victoria. I think Victoria is a lovely girl (and anybody that prevents Val from talking gets my vote), but fair is fair. I understand we’re still on the Val Character Rehab tour, but let’s give it up, shall we?? As for Vanessa – another woman that (so far) I REALLY like. In fact, I think she would have a shot at winning if paired with Derek or Mark. But Maks isn’t quite up to the task. I’ve got an appreciation for Maks, thanks to his brother – but that dance couldn’t touch what Jordan or Lindsey did. Read more..

DWTS Season 25, Week 1 – Dancing by the Numbers!

Welp. Here we are again. It’s still summer, so I’m going to keep this brief – hopefully – then I’m going outside.

Overall, I thought the show was really good this past Monday – I don’t have any real gripes other than I think TO was underscored by a point or two.  I wonder why they seem to do that on purpose? It’s got to have been pointed out to them by NOW that they really almost always low ball the first dancer out of the gate, not just in week one, but in many/most weeks. WHY??? Seems stupid and artificial.

But other than that, I thought we had a pretty good night. No one really sucked. That happens from time to time, but usually week 2 is a real eye opener. We’ll see how it goes this week with two dances. Read more..

DWTS Season 25, Week 2 – Who’s Dancing What…and When?

How much would I kill to see Derek’s choreography to “Look What You Made Me Do”?? So, so much. :::sigh:::

Anyway, everyone does a dance on Monday night (first song and dance listed for each couple). Those who survive the Monday night elimination do the second dance to the second songs listed below. Latin on Monday Night, Ballroom on Tuesday?? Or do I have them backwards? Sorry, Vogue is in charge of the press release. Vogue? Eh, doesn’t matter at this moment – All first dances listed are on one night, all second dances listed are on the other night. Good enough for now.

Winners: Vanessa, for sure. Really?? Foxtrot and Salsa?? Lindsay isn’t faring too badly with Salsa and Quickstep, although the quickstep is going to be harder than the foxtrot – but Mark is a better choreographer, so there you go.

Losers: Everyone who got Samba – widely recognized as the hardest dance to do. Rumba is also going to be tough. I think Debbie may be especially hosed with Quickstep and AT – harsh.

Opportunity: Sasha, Jordan and Nikki, in particular, have a real opportunity to show two very different sides to themselves and show a lot of range.

Other thoughts? Read more..

DWTS Season 25, Week 1 – Who’s Dancing What…and When?

Thanks to Rachel in the comments for the heads up on People’s (early, so we can’t spoil) reveal of the songs and dances for week 1. 😉 Of course, I’ve been on vacation so I’ve not been paying attention anyway. When is the premiere again? 🙂

Okay, so People doesn’t have ALL the dances, but they have a good number. And, as usual, I look at some of these choices and I roll my eyes. Who the hell does Tango in Week 1?? Ridiculous. Of course, if Jordan and Lindsay kill it, it will go one of two ways. It will label him as a ringer and it will handicap him…or it will set him on the road to the finals. I wager it depends on the package and the running order. Hope he kills it. Foxtrot and Cha Cha are pretty standard week 1 dances. Salsa? Eh, it’s fine.

As I say EVERY SEASON, these are not in dance order until you see a dance order under someone’s name. Until then, it’s either alphabetical or just plain random.

ETA: Updated with Phone numbers. NOTE:These were handed out in alphabetical order and are not necessarily indicative of dance order.

ETA2: Via Disney ABC, the rest of the dances have been filled in. Also, get ready for a fun opening number which Judge Len Goodman will take part in.

The premiere will kick off with an exciting opening number featuring head judge Len Goodman and the entire cast of “Dancing with the Stars,” choreographed by the show’s own Emmy-winning Mandy Moore.

ETA3: And this is why I love Cheryl – she always shares when she’s dancing. 🙂

ETA4: I’ve put the dances in order per Tom’s tweet based on a hunch by DWTS fan Claire. Seems like a good hunch to me, but note it could be off base. 🙂 Seems like a good guess, though, since it puts Nick and Vanessa at the top of the hour, Cheryl opening the show, Mark/Lindsey close to the end. Nikki in the pimp spot would be interesting though. Perhaps she’s really good? Or have they designated Artem as the pro who should win this season? Read more..

The New Dancing with the Stars 2009 Dances

Okay well it seems as if there is some controversy over the new dances that are being added to the mix this year. So I decided to try and get some more information for those of us who aren’t familiar with these particular dances. The only one of these that falls into the list of “traditional” ballroom dance is the Bolero and it is in the American Rhythm category.

Let’s start with the Charleston. It was developed in the early 1920’s and it turns out that the Lindy Hop was developed from the Charleston. It can be danced in a partnership, in a group, or as a solo. Check out this website with instructions for the steps from the 20‘s. Also take a look at this dance with Lucille Ball and Ginger Rogers.

Next, let’s take a look at the Bolero. Originally from Spain, this is the only traditional ballroom dance. Wikipedia mentions that this dance is different from the other American Rhythm dances because it requires Cuban motion, the rise and fall of the waltz, as well as the contra body movement of the tango. The videos that I found on Youtube reminded me of the Rumba. What do you think?

Okay next on our list is the Lambada, the “Forbidden Dance.” From Brazil, a couple of the forerunners of this dance are the salsa and the merengue. It is very fast-paced. Everything that I’ve seen makes it look like this will be definitely be one of the sexiest, hottest dances of the season. There are some instructional videos on Youtube that you should check out but I wanted you to see a dance.

The last of the new dances is the two step. Now there are a few kinds of two step,
nightclub, country, and ballroom. To me these all of these seem a lot alike and remind me of the Foxtrot. This video is of Lacey’s father Buddy teaching the nightclub two step. I thought it would be fun to see where she got her moves

Okay so now that we know a little more about these dances let’s talk about them. Can the pros handle these? Well, I have a feeling Lacey will be able to do the two step since her father developed it. Now the question is will that give her an unfair advantage? I personally don’t think so. All of these dances contain steps and movements that are familiar to other dances used in previous seasons. The Charleston contains elements of the quickstep and may be a “kiss of death” dance like the quickstep seems to be. The Lambada may be too spicy to get votes from some people but may be a very memorable dance that draws a ton of votes…we’ll have to see. The others are a lot like other dances and that might be a vote killer too. If a couple does a Rumba one week and a Bolero the next…people might not vote thinking ‘this isn’t new, I just saw this.’

Now, I know that most of you are not looking forward to these new dances but now that we know a little more would you choose to keep any of them? I’m excited for the “Forbidden Dance” myself. I have to wonder though, will any of the older dances be replaced by the new ones? I loved all the dances from last season and don’t want to see them go-especially the Paso. In the end, I think that maybe these dances were added because there are SO MANY couples this season. Hate the added dances or love ‘em but it’s gonna be a great season. It’s time to get those dancing shoes on!
