Dancing with the Stars Season 22, Week 6 – Live Blog!! (Spoilers)

Tonight we get to watch some couples mutilate “famous dances” and other couples probably do pretty well. The real question is: did Len get the memo on “content”? Last time we did this fiasco challenge, he wasn’t around. Hmmmm…we’ll see. Somehow, I suspect that all those with ballroom dances will end up below those without on the leaderboard.

After all the hype about the opening number, I found it underwhelming. Here’s my problem with it: they do these “famous” dances yet they don’t use the original music or original costumes. I don’t think I got half of them except “Risky Business” and “Big”. I didn’t care for it last season either – for the same reason. And, it’s funny, at the beginning I was like “shocking – they are featuring Mark, it’s about damn time!!”  I clearly spoke to soon because Val’s bare ass was all over the latter half of that dance. Not even remotely attractive, to me – but then I’m all about personality. Good ones.

Kim – I just love her attitude and HER personality. Good to see her getting the good edit – I suspect she doesn’t give them anything bad to work with. Keo…put on your big boy pants. I get you’re upset, I would be too – but it wasn’t Kim or Jodie’s fault. Read more..

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

Dancing with the Stars Season 22, Week 5 – Switch UP Live Blog!! (Spoilers)

This week’s challenge is that I’m sick AND Derek is apparently on Jane the Virgin at 9pm EST. 🙂 So, I’ll be flipping over at 9, flipping back at 9:30 and then picking up the few minutes I missed after the show. 🙂 How not fun. 😉 I’ll probably be flipping back and forth, honestly. Tivo’s are a wonderful thing.

LOVED the opening number! Very simple, but I liked the way it was laid out and I particularly liked the colors – it was very colorful.

Maks will be “just”. Okay. We’ll see.  Oh and the byplay with Erin has already started. Come on. We know.

Oh Witney, you are annoying me. You’ll make Wanya better? You hate switchup, remember.

Okay, I think Witney did well by Wanya – loved the costuming and the song. I thought it was a good tango, actually. Disagree with Len.

That was overly harsh on Wanya – and Maks, really? Someone figured out who baby bros competition is.

I love Kim…and I adore the look she gets on her face in the opening segment when Keo touches her. Gorgeous. But the choreography was too sharp and she didn’t really smooth out or finish her movements. That’s what Sasha needs to work on.

Really, Maks is trying much harder to make an impact.  Overly harsh…and a guy (and his brother) who wastes an unbelievable amount of time getting started dancing really has no room to be so critical.

I’m sorry, but I don’t watch this show to just have them crap on every dance. I sure hope they don’t save all their kind words for Val and his actual partner.

Love Peta – I think she did a good job here with Doug. Looked like a proper tango and he seemed less stiff than in previous weeks.

Heh….someone on twitter just said that Meryl is 3-4 inches taller than Kim and Maks is an inch (at least) shorter than Keo. LOL. BS as usual.

Judges very kind to Doug, yet he gets worse scores. Hmmm….

OMG…the questions section. Hilarious. Wanya!!! Dude….

You have time for another James Bay number? Hey, I like the dude, but I also like longer dances.  Incidentally, I was watching season 6 and 7 for a thing I’m doing for PureDerekHough and those dances were LONG. These celebs would never survive them. Seriously, week 1 Shannon and Derek was like a minute 30.

That “nice glass of merlot” has an Emmy Nomination.

Hey, Ginger danced a whole routine!! It started out a little weird with her top half doing some weird things, but she really found her stride about halfway through.  Much more content that last week. Better executed. But the bar was set low. Of course, they are starting to over praise her yet again – it wasn’t THAT great. It was good. It was certainly better than last week. But come ON.

Okay, time for me to switch over for a dose of Derek. I’ll be in and out and I’ll fill in anything I miss in a bit. 🙂

So I switched between JTV and DWTS like four times and the entire time they were pimping…I mean, talking to Ginger.

*****

Peeked back in to see Maks hose his brother’s biggest competition. Asshole.

****

Didn’t know Jane the Virgin is an hour long show. Peeked back in to see Von and Witney do a pretty good Jive. There was a problem in the beginning, but they pulled it together.  I notice that those who pose no threat to Val and Ginger get a much kinder Maks.  Still think he’s the least qualified former pro to be a judge. Ability to be nasty doesn’t make you qualified.

****

Nyle just blows my mind. Sharna did right by him this week and crafted a beautiful dance that he executed beautifully. I couldn’t see a thing wrong with it.  Okay…flipping back. 🙂 Oh…but man, did Sharna screw up early on in the package. Assumptions are bad, my dear.

Okay, now I’m back. So glad I could see Derek dance salsa with (amazing dancer) Gina Rodriguez tonight. Pretty much the only thing that saved the evening. Oh, and a Maks fan told me I was a Derek fan in the comments. No sh*t, sherlock!!  To think I stood up for Maks and wished him back over Val. You can forget that deal. Maks wishes he was half the judge that Julianne is. Say what you want – I had lots of gripes about her judging at times, but she was never a dick.

Antonio….I kinda liked this dance and I feel like Karina got more out of him than Sharna has. I feel like it was better than his absurdly high scored dance last week. It’s almost like the judges just found out that he wasn’t showing up for rehearsal or something.

And Karina has an amazing rocking body. Frankly, I thought those scores were a bit ridiculous. Funniest thing all night tonight is Karina’s comments on the judges. That’s how you kill with kindness, folks. 😀

I wasn’t actually crazy about Paige’s dance. She performed it well, but I have to agree that it didn’t look very rumba-y. That said….that wasn’t her fault. She performed VERY well what she was given by Sasha. This is where the judging is OTT. They (Maks, mostly) are judging the choreographer instead of the celebrity. Yes, it is absolutely a team effort and they have to be graded as a team. Yet, you hear people like MAKS bitch and moan in the past about Derek being scored high for amazing choreography – this is no different. Only worse because you’re hurting a celebs chances because of what the choreographer chooses to do. I think Maks is working through some envy issues here – and it could be directed at any number of people. It’s almost like he and Len are trying to wrest DWTS back to the strictly ballroom days.  Now, I wouldn’t have too much of a problem with that…but it’s something that should be laid out before the season starts, instead of springing it on them in the middle of the competition. Let’s face it – the good choreographers choreograph creatively to the music – and that wasn’t rumba music. Period.  There are so many problems with the judging tonight that I could go on all night. But I’ve been sick all day and right now my head hurts. 🙂

I talked about Von above but I liked his dance better the second time around. I think he could have gotten 8s and it would have been fine.

I also talked about Nyle above, too, and he’s still amazing and probably the best dance of the night so far.

So, why did Jodie get the pimp spot? Does anyone really think that the audience is on the edge of it’s seat waiting to see her reunite with Val? Beyond one fangirl in the comments, I doubt it.

Well, both Jodie and Val’s best dance of the season so far! Perhaps they got the pimp spot because Val choreographed and entire dance and they started immediately?  Jodie did a great job. My only question is why Val hasn’t given this quality of dance to Ginger so far??  All that said, I don’t think it should be higher than 3rd place for the night, after Wanya and Nyle.

As we said earlier in the week – no elimination this week. Next weeks elimination will  consist of scores and votes from tonight and last week.

Pure DWTS – ‘Come On Everyone, Let’s Dance’ Media

Just a few things to share with you today. First of all and drum rolls please, “Dancing With The Stars” has been nominated for NAACP Image Award for “Outstanding Reality Series” along with American Idol, America’s Next Top Model, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and Sunday Best. You can cast your vote (you have to be a NAACP Member or become one) HERE. The 42nd NAACP Image Awards will take place and air on FOX March 4th.

Speaking of award shows, Julianne Hough has been pictured at a Golden Globe pre-party this week. I wonder if we’ll ever see her dance on the show again now that she’s hit movie and music stardom? I hope so. The Golden Globes are taking place on Sunday on NBC. Maybe she will grace the Red Carpet with Ryan Seacrest on one arm and Derek on the other? 🙂

My google alerts have been filled with the US press finally catching the news that Maks is filming The Bachelor in the Ukraine which he announced last month. It’s funny how they are slow to catch on to this news. Erin Andrews said the same in this new interview on Access Hollywood. lol She also talks about her and Maks’ friendship and you can see a few of the clips of him om the show.

Pure DWTS – “Calm Before The Storm” Weekend Media In The News

“You come out and show me a proper dance. I’m fed up, Maks, with shirts coming off.” – Dancing with the Stars judge Len Goodman

Remember that one? LOL I am so missing this show, are you? It’s the “calm before the storm” though. I can feel it.

So, first up in some weekend updates, a reminder to watch “Miss America” Saturday night on ABC. Brooke Burke will be helping to host. Tony Dovolani will be one the judges. He’s going to have his work cut out for him. You can see some of the contestants below presenting themselves on the Las Vegas Strip outside of the Planet Hollywood with Boys To Men as the Master of Ceremony.

Cheryl has been so busy. Along with her “Forever Tango” tour, she’s also offering free dance lessons for local teens at Burke’s Mountain View, California ballroom on Jan. 12th. More details below and a promotional picture of her from Mountainview.patch.com. (are her shoes not cute, or what? 🙂 )

Keep your dance card open for Monday, when “Dancing with the Stars” two-time champion Cheryl Burke and fellow dancers from the hit musical Forever Tango will appear at her Mountain View ballroom. From 6-11:30 p.m. Burke and her troupe will host free dance classes for teenagers from local schools. This fundraiser will benefit “The Dance Club Mountain View,” a program developed by the nonprofit Mountain View Police Activities League and Cheryl Burke Dance Mountain View.

For those of you missing Alec and Edyta like myself (cries, please bring these two back!!), here they are opening the show for the Everett Dance Competition in California last month.

Mark was interviewed by The News Herald this week in promotion for his new album “HurtLoveBox”. He also mentions dancing which you can read on below. Be sure to read the link for the full story and interview.

When asked what dance he would perform to each of his solo songs, Ballas graciously said “Faith” would be a rumba, while “The Way You Work” would be a tango. Welcome to Ballas’s world, where despite his best efforts to get his music career off the ground the reality is his popularity orbit remains steadfastly “Dancing With the Stars”-based.

There’s something about Ballas’ personality that has allowed him to become the go-to professional dancer for contestants with, if not baggage then, interesting pop culture history.

“I try to not pay attention to the media,” Ballas said. “When I meet the person I go in with a clean slate and just meet them and take them for what they really are and who they really are rather than what people perceive and write about them. So I had great partners. I’ve never had one rude or obnoxious.”

Mark also taught a “Master Class” for “Dare to Dance” in Cincinnati, Ohio while he was there this past week. The donations went to help his foundation which helps suicide preventation and mental health awareness.

And just a mention on Paula Abdul’s new show “Live To Dance” for those of you who watched the show this past week and were discussing it in other posts. Apparently the ratings weren’t very good on the second night. This source is calling it a “flop”. 🙁 From Robot Celeb.

On Tuesday night the show debuted to 10.3 million viewers. That is about half the size of the audience that American Idol gets, but still it was a decent number and not a terrible starting place. On Wednesday the show aired the second half of the premiere and finished off the first round of auditions. It also lost about 23% of its audience. Viewership plummeted to around 8 million viewers. It finished fourth in its timeslot behind The People’s Choice Awards, Modern Family and Law & Order: SVU. Worse yet was its collapse in ratings among the much coveted 18-49 year old demographic. Here it dropped about 25% from a 2.4 rating on Tuesday to a 1.8 on Wednesday. Essentially, that means that almost all of their loss in viewers was in the 18-49 age range. Not a good sign.

I would expect it to get worse in coming weeks. In two weeks the show will play head to head with the much anticipated debut of American Idol. That will most likely draw more of her viewers away.

If there is a silver lining to the clouds it is that that Live to Dance is just a short run show scheduled to end in mid-February so the odds are that they won’t cancel her mid-season. No matter how badly things could get they will probably let her finish out the full season. They have already committed much of the money by building her the dome building and finding the contestants. What is left will be pretty cheap in comparison.

I don’t know that this loss is ratings is the announcement of the death of Live to Dance, but it certainly proves one thing for sure. Paula Abdul clearly didn’t have the much of an influence on the success of American Idol.

Ok Dancettes, that is all for now!! Have a super weekend! 😉 xxx

DWTS 10: Aiden Turner Sent Home

I hate that Aiden was sent home…he was just starting to come out of his shell!  He and Edyta were fabulous together and had such a great relationship.  And I think Edyta needs to win one of these seasons…she’s the only pro that’s been on DWTS since season 1 and hasn’t won!

Relive Aiden’s Dances
1. Week 1, Cha-Cha-Cha

2. Week 2: Foxtrot

Week 3: Quickstep

Week 4: Rumba

All I Want for DWTS Christmas

I’m sitting here waiting for the SYTYCD finale and so I decided to make a list of things I want changed or added on Dancing with the Stars 2010.

1. Replace Samantha – you had to know this one was coming. She’s just terrible. Ok, she is pleasant to look at, but then she opens her mouth. Tell you what. How about you have her dance on the show. I would like to watch that. Plus it has the added advantage of her not being able to host if she’s dancing.

2. No Live Band – we’ve hashed this issue up over and over so I won’t rehash it here. I just don’t like it. However, the music selection was a little better this season.

3 More Behind the Scenes – I’d love to see more of what goes on behind the scenes of the show. If not on the show, then on the DWTS website is fine with me.

4. How about a themed DWTS? All sports people or all singers or all tv personalities. Would even the playing field a little better I think.

5 Dancing with the Stars All Stars – bring back a bunch of our favorites to compete again. This time rotatw the pro that dances with them each week. One episode they should bring back all of the worst dancers from DWTS. Imagine a dance off between all those terrible dancers. We won’t be able to stop laughing.

6. More Pro Dances – No special guest singer should be allowed on the show without the professional dancers also. I want dance and great dance. Not just some singer with crappy dancers.

7. DWTS Tour – I can’t believe their not doing a tour again. Maybe over the summer?

8. Edyta For the Win – I was really happy that Kym finally won a mirrorball trophy. Now it’s finally time for the beautiful Edyta. she would be so excited and that would just flat out make me happy.

9. Fewer Contestants – I think we all realize that 16 was too many. Does the show realize this?

10. A DWTS Professionals Special – How about an evening of incredible choreography, music and dance by the various DWTS professionals. It would be great to see the pros at their very best with no limits.

OK, that’s a good start. What do you want for your DWTS Christmas?
