DWTS Season 17, Week 8 – Who’s Dancing What…and When??

Looks to me like everyone has the potential to have a great week, with the possible exceptions of Amber and Jack. I guess we’ll see. I also seriously doubt that Leah will do a great or even interesting V. Waltz – but she’ll get great scores regardless.

I’m hoping for something really interesting, like Val being a jackass and deciding he has to “pick on someone his own size” in the dance off and choosing someone who beats him. 🙂

We know, thanks to loose lips Witney, that the opening dance is to “Believe” by Cher ( ) – that ought to be good. But Derek and Amber’s song? A Rumba? So hosed. Wonder if he re-arranged it like the Madonna song he did with Maria. Wonder who else is getting hosed?

ETA Vogue here: Apparently an email has been sent out by ABC (to those who subscribe) that there will be a “elimination shocker” tonight. You can see a pictures of it here courtesy of @@jahfan1. Discuss in comments. ADDING: below is a full screen shot of the email thanks to PureDWTS reader Leslie. Click on the pic to make bigger.

Dancing With The Stars 17 Las Vegas Odds Going Into Week 8 —Hmmm, Interesting!

“I like to be against the odds.” ~Barry Bonds

Have you noticed the odds makers in Las Vegas have been wrong almost every week this Season (if you base it on a ranking)? Though this isn’t really anything new either, but, last season they seemed to nail it every week despite our protests. Then again, the odds are more of an overall prediction of who will win at the end (for what Courtney and Heidi are always good at explaining. It’s confusing. I know.). So, below are Sports Bovada’s new odds going into Dancing With The Stars Season 17 Week 8!! Note how the numbers have changed compared to the week before. They also have tied Brant and Jack in fourth with 16/1 odds which I think I agree with. Though I think Elizabeth should be tied with them with the same 16/1 odds too. The biggest change though is how they changed Leah’s odds from 100/1 to now 66/1. They also insist on giving Bill 100/1 odds again as in previous weeks. Though sadly, I have to say I think Bill’s time might be running out either this week or the next. So maybe these odds are correct this time? Though how I hope (again) it’s Leah to go first.

Corbin Bleu 6/5
Amber Riley 5/4
Elizabeth Berkley 6/1
Brant Daugherty 16/1
Jack Osbourne 16/1
Leah Rimini 66/1
Bill Engvall 100/1

Below are last week’s odds:

Corbin Bleu 5/4
Amber Riley 7/5
Elizabeth Berkley 6/1
Jack Osbourne 12/1
Brant Daugherty 16/1
Snooki 16/1
Bill Engvall 100/1
Leah Rimini 100/1

Heidi, Court…take it away….

Heidi: Well, technically, as someone who doesn’t know that much about betting…they aren’t really “wrong”, per se, as these are the odds to win the show. So, if their person with the lowest odds isn’t the one eliminated, then they are only wrong if their person that is the odds on favorite to win is the one eliminated. Otherwise, they just didn’t have long enough odds on the person eliminated. Courtney knows more about this than I do, but that’s the way I understand it. We are looking at is as a ranking, which I don’t know if that’s what the odds makers intended when they place the odds.  Besides all that, I think they have it right in one respect – I think the judges will continue to do their best to ensure Bill is the next one to go. Whether they are successful or not depends heavily on the scores of the other people.  Personally, I’m not sure why they have Leah so  low, currently, since Jack hasn’t been scoring as well as Leah and seems to be fading to the background.  Why does he get 16/1 and she gets 66? I personally think she’s not been worthy of better scores than Jack, but she has been getting them and I think she’ll continue to get them as long as Bill is around…possibly leaving the door open for Jack or Brant (or Liz or even Amber) to get eliminated. So, what are they seeing with regards to Leah? Who knows? All I do know is that we will probably see a meltdown of Hope Solo proportions when the judges DO get real on Leah…if they ever do.

Courtney: You are right about the odds – they are essentially just a prediction of how likely someone is to win, as opposed to being a “ranking” of who is the next to go.  That being said – I tend to interpret it like this: the odds are how likely someone is to stay until the end of the competition – so if someone’s odds of staying until the end are low, then by extension, their odds of leaving sooner (rather than later) are probably high.  And when you interpret it that way – it does sort of feel like a prediction of who might be the most likely to be eliminated next.  So applying those thoughts to the situation at hand – I think Bill has made a strong showing these past few weeks, but he is getting rather hosed by the judges in comparison…and I don’t expect this coming week to be any different.  The question is – can his viewer votes neutralize his crummy judges’ scores? One thing that struck me as I voted this week (and please forgive this brief segue away from the topic at hand), is that each week, we get fewer votes to work with per voting method – so unless people are motivated to create more accounts each week, as the weeks wear on, it gets harder and harder to pull a low-scoring couple out of a point deficit…and I’m sure the judges/PTB relish this fact, as it makes it easier for them to oust the “undesirables”.  So while we may have done enough to keep Bill safe in previous weeks – it only gets harder each week.  And I’m beginning to think the fact that there was no elim last week probably helped Bill to some extent, because it just created a huge points dump that made the margins a lot smaller.  I hope I’m just being skeptical, but I’m preparing for the worst.  As for Leah – ack.  I can’t decide if it’s padded scores or just a lot of former fans of King of Queens or The Talk feeling nostalgic, but she has got to go – the sooner, the better.  I’m beginning to think that there’s a very real possibility that, unless the judges stop drinking the Leah Remini “Anti-Scientology Not-a-Dancer” flavored Kool-Aid, she could end up bumping somebody out of the finale…and do you really want to see a freestyle out of her? Yikes 😯

Dancing with the Stars Season 17, Week 7 – Dancing by the Numbers

I’ve seen lots of people making the mistaken assumption (again) that Bill must be getting a ton of votes. This is not necessarily true. And it’s not necessarily false. We don’t actually know. All we know is that Nicole WASN’T getting the votes she needed and that Bill and Leah were getting enough to cover the spread. But as I’ve said before, If Nicole got 10 votes, Bill got 15k votes and Leah gets 20k votes does it matter when Corbin is getting 100k votes?? Nope. It just means that Nicole was first to go of the three, instead of second. Follow me?

Anyway, this week was not a major accomplishment by Bill or Leah, IMO. I think Nicole, along with possibly Jack, fall into the dangerous middle of the road territory, not so much in scoring, but certainly in the impact they are having on the show. I’m also wondering if Brant falls into this category, but he hasn’t even gotten close to “jeopardy” in a few weeks now.  Here’s where the scores from weeks 6 and 7 put each of our couples.

Table 1

Ten whole points between Bill and Nicole seems like a lot, eh?? Not so much as you might think. As shown, below, Bill only needed about 15k votes per million votes cast to beat Nicole – that’s not even close to the largest margin beaten on this show (45k, I believe, by Kurt Warner, who was eliminated the very next week). I was saying the same thing then as I am now – don’t count your chickens. Read more..

DWTS Tony Dovolani Starting To Wonder About The Finals, Val Chmerkovskiy Talks Of Bill Engvall And More

Just a few blogs that we need to rant on a little and maybe you do too? First up, Tony Dovolani has written a new blog at In Touch. I have to laugh at how seriously he took that the other team was spying on his team as if they seriously needed help or hints from them? Also, after seeing he and Leah’s dance Monday night, did you see anyone who said, “gosh, I can’t believe she did that”? He’s also starting to wonder if they will make the finals. 😯

Every week is crucial now, especially as we have some momentum. It’s time to push it and poor Leah… that’s what I’ve been doing! I made her do things in last night’s salsa she never imagined and she does not hate me for it. I’ve been overzealous with the choreography and making sure we get out there and have people say, “gosh, I can’t believe she did that.”

Last night, we also had the team dance with Elizabeth/Val, Snooki/Sasha and Bill/Emma. Our team is pretty cool and we’re not caring much what the other team is doing but they spied on us! I’m like really, why? They have Corbin, Amber and Brant? Everyone on our team embraced the spirit of what the team dance is all about and we’ve been texting and face timing to help each other prepare for it. It’s going to be a lot of fun.

I hope we continue to do well, as now is the point I’m starting to get hopeful that we have the goods to make it to the finals. After being on the show for so long you know not to think too far ahead, but there is a glimmer of hope and I’m starting to wonder about the finals, so wish us luck.

Val Chmerkovskiy has also written a new blog at Today. Check out what he writes about Bill Engvall and how Bill wanted to switch places with Snooki Monday night. He didn’t think it was right that Snooki got voted off. What a class act he (Bill) is. Val also writes of why he chose Bill first for their team dance.

After Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi was voted off Monday night, Bill Engvall, who was part of our team Spooky Bow Bow, said he couldn’t let this happen. He felt it was wrong that Nicole was leaving and so he was going to go over to Tom Bergeron and volunteer to leave the competition in her place.

Imagine what Bill was feeling. The whole ballroom is maybe upset because he’s safe and Nicole has to go home. That’s a lonely feeling. I talked to Nicole briefly after the show, but I’m concerned about Bill, too. He’s a great guy who works really hard. I told Bill that it wasn’t his fault and it had nothing to do with him. I said to Bill, “You volunteering to leave is not going to change anything. This is your journey. People want to see you do your thing. You’re here to grow and inspire people. It’d be more wrong for you to leave than it is that Nicole is going.”

Derek Hough and Amber Riley picked Corbin Bleu first for their group dance. They clearly went for the best. In my head, I automatically wanted to pick Bill because he’s the underdog, the person nobody expects anything to come out of. I made it my agenda to make sure he did well. He gave our group dance its heart. I didn’t want him tucked away in the back. I wanted to challenge myself and him and leave him with an incredible memory.

More at In Touch and Today.

Heidi rants: These guys, I swear. Tony needs to get a sense of humor, STAT! Dude, lighten up, have a little fun. BTW, Derek has won an Emmy and has never lost a team dance – do you REALLY think he needs to spy on you?? And clearly, Bill was returning the favor since he was joking about seeing their costumes. So your team was about a sense of what the team dance is all about?? You’ve been spending way too much time with the C Bros as the “us versus THEM” mentality has clearly rubbed off. His comments sound very petulant and not in the least what team dance is supposed to be about. And I’m not even going to touch on his comments about his choreo other than to say – you’d think after this many seasons on the show, and many other arcs similar to Leah’s that he would have SOME sense of how the show works and what could happen to Leah once they’ve managed to get rid of Bill. Leah isn’t a crap dancer like Hope Solo was, but if her arc doesn’t follow a similar trajectory to Hope’s then Leah has an ABC show in the works and they’re keeping her around for that reason only. Jesus, is he going to throw a FIT when the judges start getting real in probably two weeks. If Bill continues to stick around, they will continue to overscore everyone except him in hopes he leaves. If Bill gets eliminated, Tony might be in for a rude awakening – because by my reckoning, Leah is the next lowest on the totem pole. Okay, I lied…Tony, your choreo ain’t all that.

As for Val…my god, the smug sense of self importance! Yes, Val, we know BILL’S heroic attempts were all about you, and you picking him first was really all about how YOU wanted to give him a good experience and not shuffle him to the background. LOL – and you wanted to “challenge” yourself; if that’s not a backhanded slam I don’t know what is. Oh, and how horrible of Derek and Amber to want the best possible team – how horrible of Derek to make sure that HIS PARTNER is well served by the experience. Good God, man, what if it had been LIZ who had been the shocking elimination because of the 3 point difference between the two teams?? Do you not think that 3 points helped Jack over Nicole?? (Psst…Nicole was also on your team, dude.) You may not care about the points – but guess what? They matter just as much as the audience vote.

Pure Dancing With The Stars Guest Poem For DWTS Season 17 Week 7

Lois is back and this time she writes a fun poem for Dancing With The Stars Season 17 Week 7! Thanks Lois!

MY POEM FOR WEEK SEVEN
LOOSELY BASED ON THE ADDAMS FAMILY THEME SONG

THE SPOOKY, FOXY, OOKY BALLROOM FAMILY

They were Spooky, they were Foxy, they were ooky
The Ballroom Family was crazy and they were kooky

Their ballroom was a scream from each genius team
SpookyBomBom a Halloween graveyard it would seem

The Foxes were unleashed, sneaking around the floor
Foxing Awesome, their tails brought laughter and more

A mysterious announcement filled the ballroom air
Glory be, a guest judge will be the incredible Cher

The Ballroom Family felt pressure to do their very best
With each dance performed, they passed the final test

From Las Vegas to Los Angeles, Elvis came to inspire
Viva! Bill and Emma Quickstepped, they were on fire

A television anchor with special news went on the air
Elizabeth and Val’s Quickstep was attacked with flair

Tony and Leah shook their hips to a furious Salsa beat
Shimmying across the floor their steps were really neat

Brant and Peta Jived to a Tutti Fruitty, delicious song
It was a high-stepping treat, our feet Jived right along

Derek, Amber’s Paso Doble rocked the spooky crowd
Flying across the floor to rousing applause really loud

Corbin and Karina danced a sharpened Cha Cha Cha
Cheers rang out, there was many an oh, many an ah

Jack and Cheryl warmed up their feet with the Jive
It was a sparkling, spectacle, they surely came alive

Sasha and NIcole electrified with a Samba so fine
It was shimmery, glimmery, meriting scores of nine

The time came for the elimination, who would go
Oh dear, Sasha, Nicole surprisingly left the show

THE SPOOKY, FOXY, OOKY BALLROOM FAMILY
Flew through the ballroom, so bewitching to see

Week Eight will come next week how can that be
We will pay a return call to see the Ballroom Family!

By Lois A Troutman, October 29, 2013

SPOOKY, FOXY, OOKY BALLROOM FAMILY WERE SCREAMS!
HALLOWEEN, BOO! IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR IT SEEMS!

PureDWTS Season 17, Week 7 – Power Rankings

Kind of a strange, low-energy night for me – I feel like everyone, across the board, had kind of a so-so night, and I think it’s due in part to the fact that two dances a week are really starting to wear on some of the couples.  I think I notice it more this season than any other season – some are dealing with injuries, some are dealing with strained partnerships, some are dealing with illnesses, and everyone seems to be feeling the pressure.

I think most of us can agree that it was not Nicole’s time to go home – however, I’m appalled at some of the sources of blame I’m seeing from those who are upset about it, and I place a lot of blame on the shoulders of TPTB for some really sh*tty scoring decisions.  Nicole got a very kind score for her samba – while it wasn’t bad, I certainly don’t think it was 27-worthy, as she seemed to struggle with timing and there was very little hip action.  So you can’t blame scores for her exit…although the judges likely screwed her over by overscoring just about everyone except Bill – it only served to make the margins smaller, which meant that someone below her needed even fewer votes to surpass her.  And this was ON TOP of the big points dump from last week, so the margins were itty bitty.  And sorry, but those of you upset about her going home – you were actually voting for her, right? Cause I’m finding that the biggest complainers about Nicole’s exit were people that didn’t bother to throw a single vote her way all season.  If you didn’t vote, you don’t get to bitch & moan, and you are part of the problem.  Snookole needed VOTES…and she didn’t get them.  Kinda how this show works…this isn’t really a revelation, kids.

And fair warning: I’m going to be prone to bouts of rantining this week, after some of the wanton idiocy and deductive reasoning leaps I witnessed after last night’s elimination.  I’m allergic to stupid, y’know 😉

1/2.) TIE: Corbin & Karina and Amber & Derek – Just kind of an odd night from both of these couples – I don’t feel like either one was operating at peak performance levels.  I think Corbin & Karina coped as well as they could with a rather odd cha-cha song – seemed like there was a lot of what Len would call “frippery”, though…lotta side-by-side hip-hop sections, but I kinda blame the rhythm changes in the song for that.  Someone on Twitter remarked that Karina seemed stressed – and yes, I have to agree, and wonder if the constant pressure to make their routines better and better is beginning to wear on she & Corbin’s partnership.  Then there was Amber & Derek, who both had injuries to contend with – while I think they handled their paso doble well, I think Derek did kinda take the safe route on it; seemed like it wasn’t as daring or impactful as some of the other paso dobles we’ve seen from him.  Pleasant to watch, yes; super-innovative and exciting? Not really.  Let’s hope they can get back into good physical form so they can tackle more daring stuff.  Read more..

PureDWTS Season 17 Week 7 Media After Dance Night, Some New Dances Revealed For Week 8

Haven’t the AfterBuzz TV interviews been excellent this Season? I’m liking them as much as the George Pennacchio interviews for On The Red Carpet. They get to the heart of the matter below. Also, and as in previous weeks, they find out a few of the new dances for next week. Note how Emma and Bill have a Disco dance (but, it could possibly change). Karina and Corbin have the Argentine Tango. Peta says she doesn’t know their dance yet, but, it’s one of two. Val and Elizabeth don’t say.

The On The Red Carpet interviews aren’t up yet, but, if you go to ABC7, you can see a preview some interviews for what might be coming. Read more..

DWTS Season 17, Week 7 – Let’s Recap Tonight’s Show!! (SPOILERS)

Great opening dance by Mandy Moore!

The Big ANNOUNCEMENT is that Cher is performing and guest judging – BFD. I mean, really? That warranted me not missing the first few minutes?? You’re going to be pimping the crap out of it for the next 7 days!! Is Cher on a label affiliated with ABC/Disney???

Derek is dressed to Dance!!

Brant and Liz both use a shit ton of frippery and once again don’t get called on it. We’ll see if anyone does tonight. Wonder if Derek has any frippery.

Len is still in love with Liz.

Bruno says Brant went off time a couple times and still gives a 9. Right. AND he slipped on the skirt. Right.

Team Spooky Bon Bom is smack talking – biggest smack talkers usually lose.

ETA: Team FoxingAwesome easily wins the Team dance – wasn’t as close as the scores imply, IMO, just based on the fact that FA had actual dance moves in their dance. And Ballroom to boot.

SPOILERS!!!

Bill and Nicole were the last two standing – and I’m pissed that we lost the darling Nicole while Leah still darkens our dance floor.

Sorry, Rioters – I cannot celebrate with you. Nicole was a better dancer, even though I liked both couples very much.
