Dancing With The Stars 14 Week 4 Media After The Dance Part 2 (Videos)

How is your Tuesday going so far? I hope super. Do you need some more interviews after last night’s dance? If so, here we are again with a recap and a review from Good Morning America with Cameron Mathison and Carson Kressley. Carson picks Gladys or Jaleel to go home which I totally agree with and hopefully, it’s the latter. 😯

Louis Van Amstel also reviewed the night in a new blog for Good Morning America. He is the most worried for Gladys tonight. I think he is wrong about Donald and Peta. They deserved more than a 7 and two 8’s. No way did Gavin deserve three 8’s, but hey. 🙂 See if you agree or disagree with him?

PureDWTS Season 14 Week 4 Media After The Dance Part 1 (Videos)

We’ve got lots of new interviews to weed through this morning after this week’s dance. Let’s get right to it with George Pennacchio of On The Red Carpet. George asks the dance couples on their injuries and the new “Dance Off” which starts next week where they have to learn two dances. Note how their is a technical issue with the interview with Kym and Jaleel. Hopefully, they will fix that later. Also, there isn’t an interview with Maks and Melissa since they had to rush her to the hospital after their dance which you can read about in a previous posting here.

First up, Donald and Peta!! George comments that Donald is a “new kind of sex symbol”. They are excited about their performance and to be at the top of the leaderboard. They talk of the ‘dance off’ and how it will come down to “technique” versus the ‘performance’ factor for who would make it in the bottom two. Aren’t their costumes awesome? I love that color!

George asks Maria about her injuries. Derek brings up Melissa and how injuries happen. Maria has a whole new respect for dancers for what they go through physically. They are so excited about their scores. They agree with the “dance off” hoping it will support the better dancers and good dancers don’t get voted off.

Roshon is “burning up” about being called the best male dancer. He’s nervous about the dance off, but, hopes he never is in the bottom two. So far, so good he hasn’t suffered from any injuries. He didn’t know much about Melissa’s injury, but, says she’s awesome and a hard worker.

Cheryl talks of how William stepped on her foot and her shoe wasn’t on right for the rest of the dance just like what happened to Kirstie Alley. William says they are working hard and he wants to continue to be positive. Cheryl isn’t wild about the ‘dance off’ since now they have to learn two dances for next week. William looks at her like she’s nuts. lol

DWTS 14 Week 4 Power Rankings

After tonight, I’m kinda left thinking that “Rock Week” should have been abandoned after the disaster that was “Rock Week” in season 11.  There were a few standouts that I thoroughly enjoyed, but for the most part, the performances ranged from “meh” to just painful to watch…and I have to say, I think rock music is a bit of a punishment for these couples.  Why? Because rock music seems to embody all that is raw & wild – and yet, they have to do these dances with such control & precision.  Of course some of them are going to lose some performance quality – they’re going to look like they’re in slo-mo compared to the music!

One positive to come out of tonight, though: the judges seemed to finally start cracking down and scoring seriously.  Still a bit of overscoring going on, but I think they’ve finally taken off the rose (or vagina) colored glasses and started seeing some of the couples’ weaknesses.  Let’s hope it works to eliminate the couples in a fair fashion!

1.) Donald & Peta – And in week 4, we finally get to see the potential this couple developed in weeks 1-3 really pay off 😀 I could not stop smiling during Donald’s paso, which was the best of the night for me – you could tell he was having the time of his life out there, and his energy was electric.  Loved all the “rock” faces he was pulling – Jimmy Hendrix would be so proud! And in reality, his technique wasn’t too shabby either – paso really seemed to suit him, being the “hunky dunky” football player that he is 😉 And that crazy spin Donald threw Peta into at the end???!!! BRILLIANT.  I think this week just may have taken Donald from “dark horse” to “force to be reckoned with”.  I think this couple is doing everything right – they’re working hard, steadily improving, and maintaining a great chemistry that makes them really likeable.  Plus, I think Carrie Ann has a new crush now – and we know that can’t hurt.

2.) Maria & Derek – Broken foot? Psssh…just spray some Windex on it and walk it off.  That’s the Maria philosophy, and man – if that’s how she does a tango with a broken foot (and some healing ribs), then GIVE ME MORE, dammit! I definitely think Maria had the best tango of the night – clean & controlled, but still with enough impact to fit the song well and put on an entertaining performance.  I just get mesmerized watching the way she moves her torso – she just gets such a nice stretch through her upper body, and those arms just look GORGEOUS.  I know everyone talks about how Katherine’s posture is so awesome, but Maria’s definitely giving her a run for her money.

3.) Katherine & Mark – I think we all knew that Katherine would eventually have an off-week, and this may have been it – I had a hard time believing that our graceful, gorgeous English rose would channel the aggression necessary to really attack this paso head-on.  But I had an interesting problem with her paso, that I didn’t really expect: I actually thought she was better OUT of hold this week, even though many of us have gushed over how great she is IN hold.  It was strange – every time she let go of Mark, the attitude and the sassiness seemed to come out, and I really believed her aggression…loved the stalking walks and cape work with her skirt.  But then she’d reach out and go back into hold with Mark, and seemed to lose a little bit of the magic…plus she seemed to fumble a bit more than usual when Mark brought her in and out of turns.  But for having an “off week”, this was still a pretty damn good paso – never missed steps, and did them all with conviction.  I just hope Mark gives her the chance to really shine on her own in the future, because she did seem to really enjoy her solo work.

4.) Roshon & Chelsie – Truth be told, I started to freak out a bit tonight by how much I found myself agreeing with Carrie Ann – and I agree with her wholeheartedly that Roshon is the best male dancer (in terms of technique!) this season.  I don’t think he’s quite mastered the same athleticism Donald dances with, or the charisma that Jaleel dances with, but I think he’s mastered the technique better than any of the other guys.  And his greatest asset may also be his greatest downfall: his flexibility.  I love how he manages to extend his arms and really move his legs with ease – but I do notice that sometimes he moves a little too fast and somehow gets his feet kinda tangled up, and there’s a bit of a hiccup when he tries to straighten them out.  But man, this kid is impressing me – I think he had the hardest dance to contend with, given that it was Rock week.  What the heck was he supposed to do with such a graceful, flowing dance when everyone else is stomping and kicking around in pasos, tangos, and jives? Granted, the song they gave him was BARELY a rock song (I’m of the opinion that, if you came from American Idol and your name is not Chris Daughtry, you are NOT a rock artist), but I feel like he really attacked the dance head on and gave quite a valiant effort – and the result was lovely.  Now here’s the problem: I have absolutely NO IDEA how he’s doing in terms of votes.  All we know for sure is that he hasn’t been in the bottom 2 so far, and he’s been getting good-ish scores…but is he getting the votes, too? I’m gonna guess that the points spread will keep him safe this week, but I think he’s still gotta appeal to the middle-aged female demographic in order to stick around for awhile. Read more..

DWTS Karina Smirnoff Says Tonight’s Dance With Gavin DeGraw Is Right Up His Alley

Karina has been really busy rehearsing for two dances this week, but, she’s found time to blog and keep us updated at People.com. She thinks tonight’s dance will be right up Galvin’s alley. See why below. More at the link including a video and more on her dance tomorrow night with José Carreño.

I thought Gavin did really well with the rumba and I don’t think I have ever seen a celebrity progress at the rate that he has. We are taking it one week at a time and each week there is a huge improvement. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed we make it to the end of the finale, so I can see how far Gavin can take this because he is getting so good and turning in to a dancer.

One of the reasons he is improving is that we come into the studio looking forward to our rehearsals because we are laughing and having a good time. I met Gavin for the first time about three years ago at an event and I thought he was very cute and charming, but now that we are working together I have discovered even more sides of Gavin. He is intelligent, funny and he makes every situation better. We have a great, organic, natural relationship. I wouldn’t change a thing about our dynamic.

This week is rock week and Gavin is a rocker, so I think it is going to be right up his alley. I have some pretty cool tricks for the set up of our tango, which is a perfect dance for us because it’s all about the contrast of love and hate. Gavin is good at being loving as well as the source of my frustration – he jokes around so much that after a while I have to get stern with him.

This week I am also performing on the Tuesday results show with one of the world’s most famous ballet dancers, José Carreño, who is from Cuba….

DWTS Season 14 – Week 4 Predicted Scores

Now we are nearing the midway point of the season. For anyone that noticed my comments in previous posts, I have broken up every season in “thirds” for easier calculations. What do I mean by this? What I have been trying to do is that for the first “third” of a season, I only use the first four weeks of scores to come up with a predicted score for the first four weeks of the current season. Consequently when it reached Week Four, I’ll shift into using the middle four weeks of all previous seasons (10 week seasons that is) and use that as a basis for predictions. The idea is that using scores from later in the season (ie Week 7 thru 10) would not make sense for predict scores for the beginning of the season (ie Week 1 thru 3). In this way I had hoped that the predicted scores would come out to be closer to accurate than if I were to use scores willy-nilly from any point of any season.

Unfortunately not all seasons are the same length – like how not all casts are the same size – so I had to find some “normalization” for the length of the season. So I broke up a season into “thirds”. In a ten week season:
– “First Third” includes Weeks 1 through 4
– “Middle Third” includes Weeks 4 through 7
– “Last Third” includes Weeks 7 through 10

While in Season 1’s six-week season:
– “First Third” includes Weeks 1 and 2
– “Middle Third” includes Weeks 3 and 4
– “Last Third” includes Weeks 5 and 6

Why is there an overlap of Week 4 and 7 in the ten-week season format? I did that specifically to keep it semi-realistic of the skill level of all the celebs, and to have a decent broad-base of the “thirds” rather than a more cut-throat approach. Since this is the first season that I’m testing these particular calculations out… we’ll see my season finale scorecard fares in the off-season.

But enough with my blabbering… onward to the predicted scores!

ROSHON FEGAN
Dance: Viennese Waltz
Average Scores:
– Age: 22.000
– Occupation: N/A
– Professional Partner: N/A
Predicted Score / Rank: 21 / 10th
Comments: Oddly enough, the only Disney kid to have any trouble with the Viennese Waltz was Season 7’s Cody Linley with Edyta Śliwińska (who was subbing for the then injured Julianne Hough), but he received a 22. Season 11’s Kyle Massey and Season 12’s Chelsea Kane received a 27 and 26 respectively… so I highly doubt that Roshon is going to score lower than Cody, will he score as high as Kyle or Chelsea? It’s rather hard to say considering that Chelsie has only done a Viennese Waltz at the beginning of the season (Season 10 with Jake Pavelka for 20 and Season 11 with Michael Bolton for 16) or at the end of the season (Season 8 with Ty Murray for 25). Middle of the season will be interesting for this pairing.

GLADYS KNIGHT
Dance: Tango
Average Scores:
– Age: 23.000
– Occupation: 26.000
– Professional Partner: N/A
Predicted Score / Rank: 23 / 9th
Comments: Being the first singer in her 60s to be on the show, there isn’t much data to work off of (how about virtually none), the closest would be Season 5’s Wayne Newton with Cheryl Burke… but they got an 18 and Gladys is nowhere near as stiff as Wayne Newton. I do think in some ways the 23 is realistic, give or take a point.

My life can be summed up in the following two quotes: 1) "I am married to engineering and am its faithful wife by day, but at night my wanderlust takes hold and the arts becomes my jealous paramour." and... 2) "Engineering is my safety net. As promised, Dance Junkies TV interviewed the beautiful Anna Trebunskaya. Rib Hillis and Stuart Brazell host. They run through last week’s performances and get Anna’s predictions. See if you don’t agree?

I don’t think Sherri Shepherd is going to make it to the finals, but, we’ll see?

Stay tuned, Stuart tells us they plan to post an ‘Ask the Pro’ full length interview with Anna on Thursday!!!

DWTS Season 14, Week 4 – Who’s Dancing What…and when?

For the life of me, I can’t figure out how these dances get handed out. I guess it must have to do with the stupid “Rock Week” Theme. They assign songs and the dance style is determined by the song?? In any case, it leads to a big ole WTF in terms of dance styles on a given night.

I’ve taken a stab at guessing at the order – which is extremely difficult when you’ve got a Jive and a V. Waltz in with all the Tangos and Pasos. Again, the running order is going to be more a function of not having all five Tangos in a row. The question is – are the going to back load or front load the two odd dances. That is, save them toward the end or put them in the beginning…or one of each??

ETA: I was only off by one place for William and Cheryl…unfortunately in the wrong direction.

ETA 2:  I feel the need to say, one more time – the running order is not automatically the kiss of death OR the mark of a great dancer.  Particularly on theme weeks when there are a lot of similar dances. The posts Courtney has done in the past regarding the worst spot to dance are STATISTICS: they are not guarantees nor are they predictions. That’s one of the dangers of statistics – people have a tendency to misuse them. That said…William (aka God’s Gift to women everywhere :::snort:::) is being followed by….ROSHON. Bwahahahaha…okay, sorry. Just had to point that out to the William fans who have been making outrageous claims about him in the comments. Remember children, it’s just a dancing show…not the cure for cancer. 🙂

ETA 3: Karina says they’re dancing last…Maria told someone via DM that she “thinks” they’re going last. Since Maria didn’t sound sure, I’m giving it to Karina and guessing maybe Maria is 9th.  Hard to say.  VERY interesting if Gavin is indeed going last. Very interesting indeed. 🙂

ETA 4: Some song spoilers for you 🙂 If I had to guess, I’d say Melissa might have “Seven Nation Army” by the White Stripes.  Good, strong paso beat.  -Court-

ETA 5: Hey, my second guess at Sherri and original guess for Melissa appears to be right on track.  I am starting to believe that Maria is 9th.  It’s possible that Jaleel and Gladys could be reversed.

Sherri and Val – Tango; Dancing 1st
Voting # 1-800-868-3406

Katherine and Mark – Paso Doble; Dancing 2nd (Song: Time is Running Out by Muse)
Voting # 1-800-868-3410

Jaleel and Kym – Tango (Song: Something by the Stones)
Voting # 1-800-868-3412

Melissa and Maks – Paso Doble; Dancing 4th (Song: Something by the White Stripes)
Voting # 1-800-868-3407

Donald and Peta – Paso Doble; Dancing 5th
Voting # 1-800-868-3403

Gladys and Tristan – Tango
Voting # 1-800-868-3411

William and Cheryl – Jive; Dancing 7th
Voting # 1-800-868-3408

Roshon and Chelsie – V. Waltz; Dancing 8th
Voting # 1-800-868-3405

Maria and Derek – Tango
Voting # 1-800-868-3401

Gavin and Karina – Tango; Dancing 10th  (Song: Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen)
Voting # 1-800-868-3404

I think that tonight could be a test of what Donald and William are really made of, since both got styles that don’t seem like they would do well on, at least intuitively.  I think it will be a test for Cheryl as well, to see how much actual Jive content she puts in the dance or if she finds a way to exploit the sexy (again).  Roshon drew the V. Waltz card and he could find himself tested as well. As for everyone else…Gladys and Melissa will likely be challenged by the Tango since it requires a much sharper technique. Sherri needs to show passion in a different way than just having her mouth open in a grimace like she did for her rumba, since that was…odd looking.  Gavin has a chance to dig himself out of the bottom two…although I don’t think there is anyone left to save him from the boot this time. Maria, Jaleel and Katherine??  I think they will be okay, especially Jaleel and Katherine…after all, Katherine has done a variation on Paso once before. 🙂

Gear up Kiss fans! As promised last week by Tom Bergeron, the 70’s legendary rock band will be performing next week on Dancing With The Stars. What’s more, they will be performing for both nights. Below are some more details about the songs to be performed and also details about Karina dancing with ballet dancer Jose Manuel Carreno on Tuesday. Sabrina Bryan and Kyle Massey will also be performing. Say what? Yep, see why below. It’s going to be a great week to watch the Troupe dance as well. Who’s ready? 🙂

Rock Week returns, with KISS opening the show with a spectacular performance of “Rock and Roll All Nite,” accompanied by the Troupe. Bringing lots of leather and lots of fire, the remaining ten couples will perform to some of the greatest Rock songs of all time, MONDAY, APRIL 9 (8:00-10:01 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Dancing With The Stars Season 14 Las Vegas Odds For April 5th

What an interesting shake up for the Las Vegas Odds this week compared to last week. We’re not seeing so many ties. The odds makers have put William first again, but, note how Katherine is showing a closer lead in second. Donald Driver falls a notch, but, is right behind her. Jaleel falls behind Maria and she makes a rise. It pains me to see Gladys so low. I think Roshon and Sherri should be higher?

William Levy 3/2
Katherine Jenkins 9/4
Donald Driver 9/2
Maria Menounos 7/1
Jaleel White 9/1
Roshon Fegan 15/1
Melissa Gilbert 25/1
Sherri Shepherd 50/1
Gavin DeGraw 75/1
Gladys Knight 75/1

Let’s see what my PureDWTS sisters think and please let us know your thoughts too in the comments section.

Heidi: Go, Katherine and Maria (and Donald), GO!!  Ahem. That’s all I got. 🙂  What? It’s not like these actually mean anything! 😉

Courtney: I’ll keep it brief this week:  I think they’re still overestimating Melissa a bit, given what we’ve seen from her – I think Sherri has more potential right now; they’re underestimating Katherine, and still drinking the William Kool-Aid; and I think they may be shocked if and when it’s Jaleel getting sent home next week…the storm cloud brewing over that one’s head is getting pretty nasty.
