DWTS 15: Why I Hated the All-Star Season

Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated…much to the chagrin of my detractors 😉

Yes, I am back, after a rather prolonged post-season 15 hiatus. Part of it was due to a hectic year-end at work, part of it was due to other stuff, and part of it had to do with what I’m about to elaborate on in this post. Thanks to everyone who checked in on me on Twitter, and I can assure you I’m back full-time now 🙂

Many of you have noticed that I tend to take a bit of a break from Pure after the end of each season – mainly due to the level of burnout we all seem to reach after being in full-on DWTS mode for 3 months straight while we’re covering each season. Generally, I just need a break – some time to appreciate other things in my life besides DWTS – and I’m back after a week or two. This time, though, I had a harder time getting back into the swing of being excited and inspired to write about DWTS – and for awhile, I couldn’t figure out why. Then I had a revelation…

…I HATED THE ALL-STAR SEASON.

There, I said it. I hated the all-star season, and I think it has now surpassed season 9 as my least favorite season of DWTS EVER. Reflecting on this past season, aside from a few standout performances (and all the great interactions I had with Pure readers :-)), I was hard-pressed to really feel nostalgic and pleased about it. In fact, what I tended to remember the most was all the frustration, chaos, and general feelings of “WTF is going on???” that I had while watching and blogging from week to week – and when I really got to thinking about it, I found that there were 5 key problems that left me feeling totally turned-off the all-star season. Without further ado, I give you those reasons… Read more..

Vote for Your Favorites in the PureDWTS All-Stars End-of-Season Awards!!!

It’s that time of the season again – time to wrap up the season by voting in our end-of-season awards 🙂

First, some guidelines: I picked what I thought to be the most likely nominees for each category, just based on the vibes I’ve been getting from your comments all season.  I know some of you are going to disagree.  For that reason, I have allowed write-in votes…probably against my better judgement.  HOWEVER, I’m asking you guys to PLEASE USE THE WRITE-INS SPARINGLY.  Make sure the nominee you’re writing in isn’t already listed as one of the options, make sure it’s spelled correctly, and fits the scheme of the other nominees (i.e. if the category is “best dance”, you would write in something like “Kelly & Val’s paso doble”, and not just “Kelly”).  If I cannot understand what you’ve written in, your vote is getting thrown out.  If your write-in doesn’t make sense given the context, your vote is getting thrown out.  There was an absolutely ridiculous (and unneccessary) number of write-ins in last season’s awards, and I almost said “f*ck it” and threw them all out, because some of you guys clearly didn’t know how to follow directions.  Don’t bring me to the point of “f*ck it” again this season.

I will give you guys a week or two to get your votes in, and then we will reveal the results category by category in a series of posts.  I’ve included a brief explanation of each award above each poll, since there seemed to be some confusion in last season’s polls. Now vote away!!! Read more..

DWTS All Stars, Week 9 – The Cheesecake Awards!!

Courtney and I were much too lazy to worry about screencaps and gifs this week, so you’ll have to live without them. Well, I was too lazy. Courtney’s actually been sick. Boo. Anyway, on with the show.

The Award for a Metaphor FAIL (a.k.a The Master of the Mixed Metaphor Award): Len Goodman for “That dynamite was fantastic!!” Referring to Shawn and Derek’s Bhangra

Heidi: Um, say what?? 🙂 And yes, I tried to mix the metaphor in the Award title too, just in case you were wondering. Anyway, Len really let loose and lost control. He was freakin’ giddy giving them that 10 and then his whole “SHUT UP! Shut the front door and call me Mary..” thing was pretty funny. And confusing. Is this an English thing?? 🙂

Courtney: Hehe…you can definitely tell when Len goes off-script, because he makes absolutely no sense.  No cheesy “more bounce for the ounce!” or “what was on the label wasn’t in the tin” organized comments – it’s like he gets Tourette’s Syndrome when he actually likes a dance 😛

The Award for Best Audience Wrangling/Stage Direction: Tom Bergeron for telling the audience members in front of him “You can stop clapping, this isn’t exciting” and then telling them to keep clapping when something was good.

Heidi: Geez, the muppets could take some lessons from Tom. “How to chastise an Audience Member in a humorous way.” I wonder what he would have done if he had seen the chick in the short skirt bent over last week? “Hey, honey, it’s a bit early for the moon in LA.”

Courtney: I have to wonder if Tom gets as fed up with the nonsense of the show as we do sometimes 😛 Read more..

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. DWTS All Stars, Week 9 – Dancing by the Numbers

Some of you may recall what I’ve said on more than one occasion in various blogs on this site. I’ve said…when the judges get REAL, someone who has been previously deluded gets mad. And that, my friends, is Val and his big bro, who really needs to stay off twitter during the show.  I think that’s all the attention that I will give these children – really what more can be said about them at this point?

Anyway, Shawn and Melissa did great, although I thought that Melissa’s AT was overscored by a point or two for being too soft (as per usual). She also made the mistake of her Lindy – too many lifts such that some of them were a bit messy. I also find it amusing that when given the opportunity Melissa and Tony LOAD UP on the lifts and tricks (Lindy and AT…and the caveman hustle, for that matter), but some fans whine about Shawn. Derek stripped their AT down to technical cool – it was also a tad soft, but it was a better dance than Melissa’s, despite what CAI thinks. Like I said in the comments – I want Melissa in the finale, so I’ll live with a tiny bit of overscoring. 🙂 But if Shawn didn’t deserve a 30, Melissa didn’t either.

Apolo?? AWESOME Rumba – far better than Kelly’s. I will confess that I don’t know enough about Jazz to know if that was good or not. I liked it, despite a couple minor difficulties. But hell, Emmitt slipped last week and got 10’s, why not Apolo?? Emmitt was overscored on his first dance and, as Courtney pointed out on Twitter, it’s this sort of scoring that sends better dancers home. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen.

Here is our scoreboard after two dances – and my top three coincide with the Judges Top 3. Awesome. Not that it means anything.

At the bottom, we have Emmitt and Kelly. I think that if Kelly or Emmitt manage to stick around it will be at Melissa’s expense and I hope like hell that doesn’t happen because Melissa is ten times the dancer that Kelly is. But, that’s the funny thing about an All Star season – you aren’t guaranteed a spot just because you’re a good dancer. That goes for Apolo and Shawn too – no guarantees. Read more..

DWTS 15, Week 8 – The Cheesecake Awards!!

Well, I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that re-watching the results show was enlightening and annoying as hell all at the same time. And some parts were downright gross. 🙂 Anyway, I am just starting to write this down and I’m sensing that it will be WAY more bitchy than it is funny. Fair warning. 🙂

The Award for the Pro Giddy Beyond All Reason: Tony Dovolani, in His Confessional Shown During the Results Show

Heidi: He’s just freaking happy. 🙂 And he should be, what with perfect scores. He and Melissa are so cute and fun that I would be happy to see them make it to the finale and win (although I want it to be SHAWN and it should be Shawn). I love him bursting with glee in the confessional to the point he blows Melissa’s ear drums out. But seriously – I hope he holds on to that feeling because the judges were exceedingly kind and probably for a reason. Looking back on that Quickstep, you could drive a mac truck between Melissa and Tony’s bodies – something that Len regularly bitches about when the Pro happens to be named Derek. Be prepared – this is a theme you will likely hear me complain about throughout the Awards. 😀

Courtney: I’ve gotta say – Tony is really impressing me this season.  He’s stepped up the choreo, and although he’s still not necessarily the most creative pro on the show, he still makes his partners actually dance, and he doesn’t buy into the drama – and neither does Melissa.  They don’t try to pass off some phony showmance, they don’t go for super flashy choreography, they’re not over-the-top competitive & annoying – they just dance, and they dance well…and they don’t worry about what’s going on around them.  It’s nice to see him genuinely happy and grateful to be doing well 😀 And him cheesing in the confessional was just adorable…I was half expecting the guy to say “Am I dreaming???? Am I actually headed to week 9???? AAAAAAGGHHHH!!!” I daresay putting up with the likes of Wendy Williams, Kate Gosselin, and Martina Navratilova over the years has paid off 🙂

Heidi: Yep, Tony is downright CUTE this season as well. He matches his partner in that respect.

DWTS Peta Murgatroyd Pictured In New York, She And Gilles Marini Guest On The View

Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd flew to New York City right after they had a day to rest from their elimination on Dancing With The Stars. Above is Peta while waiting for a cab. You can see more pictures of her at Zimbio. Tall boots, black leather leggings! I love this look!!! 😀

Also, if you missed Peta and Gilles on The View yesterday, you can see the full episode at the The View’s official site here.

What The Celebrities Didn’t Expect To Learn On DWTS, What They’ve Taught The Pros, And More

George Pennacchio of On The Red Carpet is back and this time he asks the couples what they didn’t expect to learn or know dancing a second time on Dancing With The Stars up to this point. He also asks the pros what their celebrities have taught them this season. Good questions!! He also gets their reactions on learning about next week’s dances.

Let’s start out with Cheryl and Emmitt! Emmitt says he didn’t know there would be so much “emotional charge” when one of the couples were eliminated. There is a “gut wrenching” feeling and he didn’t prepare for it. Cheryl says Emmitt has taught her about “life”, “growing” and “maturing”. For next weeks dances, they have to buckle down, tighten up, and just get better.

Apolo says (in an overwhelming way) he wasn’t expecting to know about “Karina Smirnoff” and how she makes you give it your all ….160%!!! Karina says Apolo has taught her to always have a positive outlook…even in the worst of conditions such as when they are in the elimination spot or if they have a fight. “It’s all good”! At the end, they get silly talking of next week’s dances, she has lots of really good ideas, and Karina calls him her “baby elephant”.

Val says Kelly has taught him composure, how to be a professional, to be honest, to have good timing, and how to carry yourself better. As for not know what she’d be in for, Kelly didn’t realize she’d love dancing again so much, the work, and being around Val for long hours and that they’d click. On their next dances, Val gets nervous when first learning what they have and the song, but, he believes in Kelly and they can do it.

Tony and Melissa! Tony can’t believe he and Melissa have made it this far. It’s been a “dream come true”. They have no idea what will happen for next week’s “Caveman Hustle”. On Melissa, Tony says she has this way of teaching him ‘to enjoy every second’, to ‘savor every moment’, and that ‘their families are the most important part’. On what she didn’t think she’d learn by dancing a second time, Melissa says she has learned to savor the experience more (the “small things”). They also didn’t expect to get this far. The eliminations have also been difficult.

For a media round-up on Derek and Shawn visit Pure Derek Hough as our Miss Heidi will have everything on them up as soon as she can.

So, here’s to next week, Everyone!!! Anything can happen! Are you ready? Being a huge Michael Jackson fan, I am going to love this upcoming week the most I think. 🙂

Saying Good-Bye To Kirstie Alley And Gilles Marini On Dancing With The Stars (Interviews)

Has there ever been two more gracious, classy exits on Dancing With The Stars than with Kirstie Alley and Gilles Marini? There have been many. I know. But, wow, Gilles really touched on me last night when he thanked not only the show, but, his wife and then there were the kind words he said about Peta too. This is from the ET Online interview for an example….

“This woman was in my life 24/7 and she never gave up anything, and she always wanted me to look amazing and she pushed me to places that I never knew I would go when it comes down to these performances,” he retold ET of his talk with his partner.

“I felt safe at all times,” he praised. “I was always worried because this is my personality [and] I wanted to do so much more, but I always felt safe with her. I had the best time.”

Another thing I loved about Gilles was his love for this Country and being a new citizen! He made a statement through out the season to never take our freedoms for granted.

Kirstie!! Once again (as she did before in the first season she danced), she reminded me of how important it is to stay positive, not to take life so seriously, and to LAUGH!! She also reminded me that growing old doesn’t have to be and that we can dance until we die. I will forever be a fan of this woman and her beautiful, young, passionate, energetic, fun spirit and I hope we see her entertaining the world forever.

With all that said, here are their interviews after they were eliminated last night. Lots of laughs and some tears too…

Stay tuned! We’ll add their Good Morning America interview as soon as we can!

UPDATE: And HERE is their Good Morning America interview. It’s ‘too early in the morning’ for them, but, note how George tries to ask Maks about his movie career, but, Maks doesn’t reveal anything except to say he’s looking forward to the opportunities.

SPOILERS!! DWTS Season 15, Week 8 – Who Got the Boot??

Blah blah….white space for the retweeters so they don’t accidentally spoil it…blah blah….the couples picked styles/themes for each other and the only person with a chance Derek. He of the Jungle Jazz Samba. I smell a 50’s Paso in the offing.  I hope. 🙂 Kelly is screwed, along with a few others. Anyway…Whooooo Hooooo – Drinks are on the house!!

We lost two couples tonight and they are….

Kirstie and Maks – Seventh Place

Gilles and Peta – Sixth Place

How did the ladies of PureDWTS do??

Heidi:  My guess was Kirstie in 7th place with Kelly in 6th, with Gilles as my second choice for 6th and Emmitt at the outside.

Courtney: Guessed Kirstie in 7th, with Gilles in 6th with Melissa at a possible in the bottom 3.

Vogue:  Had Gilles in 7th place and Gilles in 6th place, with Emmitt at the outside chance.

NOTE: Once again, Tom said NOT NECESSARILY THE BOTTOM TWO – so once again we have no clue of the actual standings. DWTS is trying to preserve some Drama.

Next week?? THREE dances. I’ll let Courtney fill you in. 🙂

DWTS All Stars, Week 8 – Dancing by the Numbers

If you want to look at the numbers from last week before they added in two more dances, take a look at DBTN Week 7.

I’m not even going to discuss the judging tonight – it was awful from the opening dance all the way to the end. Len and his horrible comment to Shawn – I think maybe he heard Derek say “f#$k you” with his choreo or something.  People who got perfect scores shouldn’t have while others were excessively punished.  I feel bad for Apolo’s trio going after Shawn cuz he seemed pretty tame after.  I love Emmitt, but a 30 on his trio?? No way. Len’s treatment of Gilles (aka Good) is inexplicable.  And that V. Waltz from Kelly?? WHAT?? Crack is wack, ya’ll. Ridiculous. Oh, look, I talked all about the judging after I said I wouldn’t. 🙂   That’s cuz it’s taking the enjoyment out of the show for me.  Anyway, on with the show:

The Judges Scores and Percentages

Bye Bye Kirstie. I don’t think there’s any way she beats that spread. She was in the bottom two previously, when the spread was much smaller.  Since it’s a double elimination, she needs TWO of the following to happen, to avoid going home:

–          Kirstie needs 19,550 more votes per million votes cast than Apolo, OR;

–          Kirstie needs 20,320 more votes per million votes cast than Gilles, OR;

–          Kirstie needs 21,100 more votes per million votes cast than Emmitt or Kelly, OR;

–          Kirstie needs 22,670 more votes per million votes cast than Shawn, OR;

–          Kirstie needs 31,250 more votes per million votes cast than Melissa.

I’m sorry, Kirstie fans. I do wish I could say I thought she was staying. Unfortunately, I think she’s the only sure thing of the night. I would much rather Gilles and Kelly leave before her, but I don’t see that happening. Read more..
