The Costumes And Make-up: Who had the best look for DWTS 15 Week 5?

The Dancing With The Stars Make-up Team has released some behind the scenes photos of the cast getting ready for the shows this past week. Above is Shawn Johnson, Karina Smirnoff, and Peta Murgatroyd. To see more pics of the cast, see Dancing With The Stars Make-up’s official facebook page. I always enjoy the close-up of their EYES and how they do their make-up.

As for the costumes, who did you think had the prettiest or coolest costumes this week? I think I loved Kirstie’s long black flowing dress the most. But, what about Shawn and Derek? They looked stunning. I also liked Kelly’s 80’s vibe black corset dress and jewelry. I loved Karina’s red dress as well. She talked of how she designed it at Instyle.

“When I designed the costume, I wanted it to look like a silk nightgown,” Smirnoff told InStyle.com. “I wanted to match the dress, the hair and the makeup to what the song and dance make you feel—fun and sexy with some funk and sass! It was such a great, soft and seductive look—I loved it!”

It was perfect and I liked the red with Apolo’s leopard shirt. Let us know what you think in comments.

Shirley Ballas, Louis Van Amstel, And Sabrina Bryan Critique Dancing With The Stars Week 5’s Dances

Dancing champion Shirley Ballas was a guest on After Buzz to critique this past week’s dances from a “professional” perspective. As some of you pointed out in comments, she feels much like we do. For starters, she felt Tony and Melissa’s individual dance could have used more difficult choreography, passion, and chemistry. Louis Van Amstel and Sabrina were interviewed and joined in to critique the dances as well from a “dancing” perspective. Louis thinks Tony should push Melissa more too. As for Derek and Shawn, Shirley says Derek is “creative beyond belief”, but, he and Shawn’s dance missed a few technical elements. She has some choice words to describe Gilles Marini which aren’t far from our own this season. He’s too “self absorbed” and not as “sincere” in his dancing like he should be. Lots more below on each couple including Shirley’s thoughts on who she thinks will be in the Finale: Shawn and Derek, Louis and Sabrina, Emmitt and Cheryl, or possibly Apolo and Karina if they can get their chemistry in check. This interview is 45 minutes long, but, so well worth a listen when you get a chance. Let us know what you think and if you agree with Shirley? Can I just say? SHIRLEY SHOULD BE A JUDGE! I’d love to see her more involved with the show every week somehow and even possibly replace Carrie Anne!! Can you imagine?

PureDWTS POLL: Team Gangnam or Team Call Me Maybe? Which was the best? VOTE

Annie Barrett of EW wrote up a piece on Dancing With The Stars last night! She’s a hoot always and seems to always voice what the fans generally think without minsing words. Did she do the same again? Read on to see….

Congrats to Team ‘Gangnam Style’ — a.k.a. American Psy — for delivering what was in many ways the best and worst group dance Planet Mirrorballus has ever seen. Mostly worst! It was the best if you love tepid messes and things that make no sense, which obviously I do because it’s season 15 and I’m still sitting here in my fringed boots typing about an alternate universe. Like Kelly Monaco said, “Sometimes… trainwrecks are fun to watch.”

Somehow this group f(l)ail earned Kelly, Kirstie, Emmitt, and Not-At-All-Powerful Captain Gilles three 9s, probably because if the judges had scored it fairly the entire leaderboard would have been messed up. I’m fine with that. I might even award them all 9s myself provided I’d never have to see Gilles peering into Peta’s crotch, Kirstie and Maks’ “mat exercises,” and Bruno sniffing O Captain His Captain’s lointowel ever, ever again. EWWWW.com.

LOL! She’s too funny!! I still can’t believe the judges would give Team Gangham “9’s”? 😕

So, we’re curious on some Poll numbers for the fans favorite TEAM DANCE? No, Polls aren’t always accurate, but, our Polls at PureDWTS seem to be pretty close. So, what do you think: Team Gangnam or Team Call Me Maybe? Which Team Dance did you think was the best this week? Note: this isn’t a Poll for who your favorite dancers are. Try to keep them out of it and only vote on the dances themselves? If you need to watch or relive the dances again, you can do so at the end of this post!

Thanks so much for your vote! Be sure to tell us how you voted in comments too if you like!

PureDWTS 15 Week 5 – Interviews After The Dance Part 2

We’ve got some more interviews to share! Below Melissa and Tony talk with Access Hollywood about her injury and how it happened. In her words, “It’s gross and technical”. She’s so cute. Poor Tony too! Thank goodness she’s ok.

Here they are with Extra as well talking on the same. Melissa also said she and Tony have the Viennese Waltz next week. Tony plans to choreograph around her neck issues. Also, Gilles and Peta talk about Carrie Ann’s fall. Kirstie talks about the wall she hit last week.

And that is all for now…I think? 😯

PureDWTS 15 Week 5 – Interviews After The Dance, More Information On Dances Next Week

What a fun night on Dancing With The Stars and, to think, there is more tonight where that came from!! What did the couples think? We found out below with George Pennacchio On The Red Carpet. Note while watching these interviews that you’ll be able to see the costumes from the individual dances that will take place tonight. Note too that next week is Country Week as we’ve reported to you all this past week where the couples dance to a Country song. They also have a group dance where they will all dance together. More info below and in COMMENTS….

First up, Kirstie and Maks!! Kirstie wasn’t expecting such high praise last night for her Quickstep. Maks hopes Kirstie won’t have a breakdown again. Kirstie explains why she hit a wall with her doggie being sick and all. Maks keep teasing her. George asks about next week’s “Country” dance. They won’t give out any details except to say that Maks is from the “old” country. Too funny! ADDING: Kirstie tweeted that she and Maks have a Rumba.

Louis and Sabrina talk of all the mistakes their team made in rehearsals before they danced. Then they all just went out there, had fun, and it all came together. Sabrina is more sore this week than ever from learning the two dances. Louis says, “Beauty is pain”. For country week, they have a beautiful country song that will tell a story that means a lot to Sabrina. They have the Rumba. Louis plans to get “deeper” and peel off another layer with Sabrina.

George praises Gilles for his Oscar worthy dances. Gilles talks of the energy that he is bringing and gives Peta props for bringing out the best in him. They are looking forward to doing a Cha Cha Cha to a country song next week. They also speak on the group dance which they will all start rehearsing TODAY!

Kelly doesn’t think work influenced her dance last night. She was tired all week trying to keep up, but, not last night. She and Val did the best they could and no excuses. As for next week, Kelly doesn’t like Country music and it will be a step out of her comfort zone. They have a Tango to a Carrie Underwood song.

DWTS 15, Week 5 – Power Rankings, Part I

So this no elim/split performance night sure does throw a wrench into the normal, everyday workings here at Pure 😛 I realize that, since there is no elimination this week, it’s sort of pointless to try and predict who goes home – but the power rankings do allow for some interesting discussion, so we don’t want to just skip them altogether.  So just think of these as “theoretical power rankings” – who I would predict to go home if there actually was an elimination this week.  And since it’s split into two nights, this is what I’m going to do: tonight’s rankings are just for those that we saw dancing individually tonight (Gilles & Peta, Kelly & Val, Kirstie & Maks, Emmitt & Cheryl) – so if these were the only contestants left, who I would predict to go home out of the four.  I’ll also include some thoughts on Team “Call Me Maybe”. For tomorrow’s rankings, I will rank EVERYONE – and to save myself the work (and the redundancy) of commenting on every single couple again, I will probably just copy and paste my commentary from this post, and add any additional commentary I feel necessary after seeing tomorrow night’s couples dance.  Make sense? Good…because I’m not so sure I understand it myself 😛

1.) Gilles & Peta – Well, guess I can’t really get too mad at the overscoring of this one, since it’s kind of become par for the course this season.  I actually thought Gilles had some really nice lines in this rumba – he was actually extending both his arms and his legs nicely.  But my big problem was that I still felt like Peta was doing all the work…and it got a little repetitive.  To concur with Len, I got tired of the leg extensions and displays of flexibility really quickly, and it seemed to slow everything down just a little too much.  It was a time-waster in an already shortened routine.  It seemed like the first part (the a cappella part) was nice, and then once the crescendo hit with the instruments it was all overwrought emotion from there on out.  I would have probably given it a 28, tops, because I felt like there just wasn’t as much content as there should have been.  29.5 is an awfully cushy score.

2.) Emmitt & Cheryl – Lack of hip action and excessive shimmying aside – I actually ended up really liking this routine 🙂 Probably my favorite individual routine of the night, as Emmitt just seemed to be having a ton of fun to a really cheesy song.  I got a little worried at the beginning when I saw Cheryl doing a lot of shimmying around Emmitt, thinking that this would be a repeat of their bolero where Cheryl just did a lot of dancing around him.  But once they got into the routine a little more, I thought he did a pretty good amount of moving himself, and there actually was a considerable amount of samba content in this routine (you listening, Val?) Could have done without the giant inflatable parrots, but hey, we can’t always get what we want 😉

3.) Kirstie & Maks – Technically, I think it was the best routine Kirstie’s done so far this season, but I just ended up feeling kind of “meh” about it – probably because both Kirstie & Maks looked uncharacteristically cheerless in it.  Seriously, between the black costumes and their intense, focused expressions, I thought they were quickstepping at a funeral.  Did Mrs. Robinson die at the end of The Graduate? I’m confused 😛  Guess after I heard what song they were dancing to, I was expecting this dance to be as camp as Christmas – but it was just too tame.  I think she started off strong and had a good frame, and then maybe got a little bungled up on the bouncing sections, but overall I liked the choreography.  Just wish they would have remembered to have fun with it 😛 If we were basing this week’s elim solely on this one dance, I’d say Kirstie should probably be a bit worried – but since she’s got the team dance (and next week’s dances) to give her a boost, I wouldn’t be too worried…yet.

4.) Kelly & Val – Anyone else think they may have phoned it in on this samba, given how stressed and busy they were showing Kelly to be in the reheasal package? 🙁 I don’t feel like Kelly or Val really got 100% into this routine, and for the first time since week 2, I saw Kelly get a little bit intimidated and unsure of herself out on the floor.  She also seemed a little wobbly, and I saw some funky arms & legs…a few “Bambi on Ice” moments.  I could have done without all of the touchy-feely-sexy-ooh-look-at-how-much-chemistry-we-have stuff at the beginning, and I would have liked a little more meat & potatoes samba in this samba, but that kinda goes without saying.  Len & I were surprisingly like-minded in regards to tonight’s show 😛 But again, I have to wonder if Kelly & Val had a rough week between her work schedule and the team dance rehearsal, and maybe knew they were kind of half-assing it – because neither one looked very surprised or upset by the critiques or scores they got.  Perhaps they took a calculated risk in a week they knew wouldn’t matter too much? If I were Kelly, I would be slightly worried after this routine – for the simple reason that it seemed to really expose her weaknesses.

Thoughts on Team “Call Me Maybe”: As I said on Twitter, this routine was so stinkin’ cute 🙂 But with a song like that, can you go any other route except cute? 😛 I thought the theme was genius: it fit the mood of the song perfectly, capitalized on the celebs strengths (3 girls with cheerleading skills and one guy that is just cool…and hot 😉 ), and made for some cute costumes and scenery.  Loved the stepping portion at the beginning with the guys; thought the group sections were a nice combination of freestyle moves and enough proper ballroom to please Len – they were also sufficiently synchronized, given that some of the moves (like the leap frog over their partners) are hard to really do 100% in synch.  I also thought the individual sections were nicely reflective of each partnership – Sabrina got to be sassy with Louis, Shawn & Derek got to be fun & cheesy, Melissa got to be “pretty” and move smoothly with Tony, and Apolo & Karina got to make up for their hip-hop mishap last week 🙂 At the end, I was left smiling and feeling proud of them – they could have gone totally crazy and gone for shock value rather than technique, but they managed to throw it a lot of real dancing along with a great deal of entertainment value.  I would be pissed at CAI giving them a half-point shy of a perfect 30, but we all know she’s saving her 10 paddle virginity for Team Gangnam Style this week.  :::eye roll::: Oh well – at least they can only hope to get a half point more than Shawn’s team, tops.  That’s good enough for me 😉

So what did you guys think of tonight’s dances? Be sure to keep an eye out for any spoilers we might post about tomorrow night’s show…and avert your eyes accordingly, if you want to be surprised 😎

DWTS All Stars, Week 4 – The Cheesecake Awards!!

This blog is brought to you by the letter D and the number 8.

I don’t know how funny I’m feeling this week, but I AM feeling snotty, and that’s almost as good. 🙂 IMO, anyway.

The Award for the Oddly, Mildly Amusing Imitation of the Week: Mark (and Shawn and Derek) for the Bunny Imitation

Heidi: Okay, I found it mildly amusing when Mark was doing it…then much more amusing when Shawn and Derek started doing it and Mark joined in. And then I had to wonder – what the hell goes on in that boy’s head? And what made him think that possibly dancing in bunny suits would be a good idea?? He also seems to have a real fixation on a variety of animals. Last week he was all about turtles, this week bunnies. He shaved his head and got real weird. 🙂

Courtney: Old Mark Ballas had a farm, E-I-E-I-O…and on this farm he had a bunny, a turtle, some gorillas, the donkey from Emmitt’s paso doble, and probably the horses from the Gangnam Style team dance.  I dunno, I find his animal fixation oddly endearing this time around – maybe it’s because I love animals, maybe it’s because I think Mark had already kinda given up on Bristol this season and doing animal stuff was a way to amuse himself until she was eliminated. And Shawn & Derek? I just think they’re whimsical 😛 Yeah I said it…whimsical.  Like the keepsake ornaments at Hallmark.

Heidi: I find it oddly endearing too. 🙂  And I love the word whimsical.  This blog is now brought to you by the word “whimsical”.

The Award for Highest Cognitive Dissonance Factor, Week 4: Len Goodman, for the hilarious backstage aside to Bruno – “You touched him in a provocative way!”

Heidi: I’m sorry, but when Len is being the “real Len” that you often see in paparazzi video (and in this backstage bit) it really throws me and makes me giggle.  He’s just *funny* in a weird and unexpected way and I think it’s fun to see him interacting with Bruno in a more natural way. He often reminds me of a drunken grandpa who ends up dancing in his underwear for the entertainment of others. 🙂

Courtney: He’s either the drunk grandpa dancing nekkid, or the drunk grandpa will all sorts of tall tales from his youth about how he had to walk 15 miles barefoot in the snow to get to school, how he once beat Sinatra in a poker game, or the wild night he spent in Vegas with Shelley Winters 😛 Regardless, I just enjoy that Len seems to call his fellow judges out on their bullshit – and yes, I would say Bruno grabbing Gilles “in a provocative way” would qualify as bullshit, because you KNOW that allowing that to happen would score some serious Bruno brownie points for Gilles.  Oh sh*t…”Bruno brownie points” sounds FILTHY 😯 Read more..

Gilles Marini On DWTS 15 Week 5 “It is going to be a wild week!”

Gilles Marini writes how last week’s dance wasn’t easy to learn while being in Miami working on other commitments last week. The first few days, he and partner Peta Murgatroyd had “no clue” what they were doing. By Monday night, “all went well”. He writes a little on this week’s up coming Rumba and the group dance too…

Food aside, Miami was a struggle as we were trying to learn and perfect the Bollywood dance style and OMG it wasn’t easy at ALL! The first few days we truly had no clue what we where doing and had to call in a Bollywood pro to help us. We practiced as much as we could but it was hard since we were away from home and didn’t have a lot of time since I was busy with other commitments. Once we got back to LA, we had all weekend to perfect the dance. By Sunday night we finally felt like we had something and were comfortable…which was a good thing since we were dancing in 15 hours!! On Monday night all went well and I feel like we did a great job. Bollywood is fun, colorful and full of energy and we had a great time performing it. And it was AWESOME having Paula Abdul as a guest judge!

And now..Let’s Get Ready to RUMBA…and to a Whitney Houston song no less! We will be dancing two dances next week. The Rumba and a group freestyle dance to Gangnam style! It is going to be a wild week!

You can read the blog in full at Parade.com.

Also, isn’t this a breathtaking shot of Peta? According to his facebook, Gilles took this photo while “shooting right up in the hills”. Not sure what that means…

ADDING: Below is Peta and Gilles talking about their dances this week with On The Red Carpet. Be sure you let us know what you think in comments.

ADDING2: TV Guide has a new interview up with Peta where she talks about she and Gilles’ new dance and the team dance as well. Here’s a take….
