PureDWTS Season 23 Finale Part 1 – Media, Scores, And Interviews

What a great night of dancing last night. And just think…there is more tonight!! Yay!! 🙂 With that said, I just want to take a moment to thank you all for following us all season. You are the tops. Whatever you do though….don’t go away in the off season. John has a new commentary post we’d like your feed back on coming up tomorrow. We also have an “end of the season” questionnaire coming soon….and then there are the new Pro and Celebrity Wish lists, new rumors for next season, coverage of the new tour, and keeping up with the Pros as always, and so much more. So, stick around. 😉

Ok, let’s review the scores from last night…

Redemption Dance:
Laurie Hernandez and Val Chmerkovskiy (Paso): 9-10-9-10 from the judges for a total of 38.
James Hinchcliffe and Sharna Burgess (Foxtrot): 9-9-9-10 from the judges for a total of 37.
Calvin Johnson, Jr. and Lindsay Arnold (Viennese Waltz ): 8-9-9-9 from the judges for a total of 35.
Jana Kramer and Gleb Savchenko (Tango): 8-9-9-9 from the judges for a total of 35.

The Freestyle Challenge:
Calvin & Lindsay: 10-10-10-10 from the judges for a perfect 40.
Laurie & Val & Maks: 10-10-10-10 from the judges for a perfect 40.
James & Sharna: 10-10-10-10 from the judges for a perfect 40.
Jana & Gleb: 9-9-9-9 from the judges for a total of 36.

As you can see, Laurie and Val are only one point ahead of James and Sharna. I have some thoughts on this, but, I will put them in Courtney’s new Power Rankings post coming later. 😉

Onto some Media, recaps, and interviews. First see Glamour, ABC7, and People for a few recaps. Then don’t miss seeing Entertainment Tonight for a recap and a new interview with Jana and Gleb. I love Gleb and Jana’s smiles. I’m really proud of them and how they powered through all season and I couldn’t be more thankful that Gleb is back dancing on our version of Dancing With The Stars. He didn’t disappoint. Here they are with E Online….

Glen and Jana also talked with Fox. I’m so glad Gleb challenged her every week like he did and I think she learned and healed a lot from it. Here’s her performance of “Circles” tonight. I love that song.:

Afterwards, co-host Erin Andrews asked Savchenko what he had said to Kramer after their troubled performance, set to Sia’s “Unstoppable.”

“I said, ‘I’m sorry,’ ” the emotional dance pro replied.

But Kramer told reporters backstage that after Savchenko had apologized to her, she said to him, “It’s okay. The amount of times that I’ve messed up—I even did a little mess up in the routine, too, but it’s okay. We had an incredible journey. It’s not about the last thing. It’s about the whole package and we had standing ovations and perfect scores [all season]. We killed it.”

Savchenko agreed, saying, “We killed it every week—came out there, different characters, different routines. It was challenging. We never took a week and said, this week we’re going to go easy because we know we’re going to be through.”

He said to Kramer in front of reporters, “Every week I pushed you over your limit.”

Kramer, who scored a 35 out of 40 for their first dance, a tango, and 36 for the freestyle, was eliminated based on viewer votes and scores from last week.

Gymnast Laurie Hernandez, race car driver James Hinchcliffe, and former football player Calvin Johnson Jr. proved that athletes still have the edge on “DWTS” as they wound up the final three to compete in Tuesday’s grand finale.

But Kramer insisted upon leaving in fourth place, “I’m so happy, honestly. We did everything we wanted to do. I shared every story I wanted to share which is why I signed up for the show. I danced with an incredible partner and I had a blast. It’s something that I’ll never forget…there’s nothing to really be sad about.”

The singer who relived her relationship hell on “DWTS” will be performing her single, “Circles,” on the Tuesday show where the winner will be crowned — and then plans to bask in life with her baby daughter Jolie: “I cannot wait for that mommy time.”

Dancing with the Stars Season 23, THE FINALS – LIVE BLOG!!

As always…

Site rules in are effect – don’t hit refresh every 2 minutes, make sure you’re not posting one-liners, etc. Thank you. 🙂

What kind of fresh hell will I have to endure this evening??

The obligatory kinda silly opening. Non-actors reading lines. 🙂

Calvin and Lindsay up first….agree with Lindsay, CAI totally screwed them over. That was utterly ridiculous.

They’ve done some version of “watching video” nearly every season in the final or semi-final. Think this is the first time that they’ve looked at their OWN video.

Beautiful V. Waltz. Only complaint I had didn’t really have to do with them but the stupid “no lift” rule that makes it incredibly awkward to do some moves because Lindsay is trying so hard to keep her feet on the ground. And CAI is just enough the bitch to call it in the finale too.

Agree with Len on all but the footwork. OH FOR GOD’S SAKE!!! Her foot did not come off. My god save me from CAI and her moronic behavior. Ridiculous.

@#$%$#@@#$%^&&

Another Jana package that consists of wahhh whaaaa wahhh….

Dance was going pretty well until she missed a couple steps in the middle and then there was that LIFT. It was just messy towards the end. And the middle.

Agree with Julianne wholeheartedly. At least CAI saw her lift too…but if she get’s a nine from CAI she’s an idiot. OH HELL YES LEN!!! Where have you been for 23 seasons?

Calvin really got hosed – same score as Jana and his dance was MUCH better. She was so messy and got called out for it by Julianne, yet gets the same score with more raves.  So, is he moving on to tomorrow and they want to keep him down?

The attempt to turn Val into Derek continues. Too bad he sounds so insincere. And can’t really choreograph very well.

Good dancing from Laurie although there’s something going on with how she bends – I guess it’s gymnast body. It also felt more like a Tango than a Paso. Bit of a sync issue at the end.  Great back kick in there – but no surprise. Gymnast.

Lot’s of gushing…odd that CAI can see those feet come off the ground but completely miss the sync issue. Peeked on twitter and saw Courtney saw it too.

Wow…this is interesting scoring.

Why do we have a musical performance BEFORE the last dance of the round?? And will this affect voting – we know large chunks of the audience might not have the best attention span.

LOL Sharna. Love Helio…that was fun.

Okay, that was an EXCELLENT foxtrot!! So smooth, beautiful….very well done.

I didn’t see the stumble at all…interesting that the producers had it all cued up to replay it. I think he should still get at least one 10 – Laurie did and she had issues as well.

Erin, shut up. Okay, same score as Laurie?  I’ve lost track. Crap, Laurie got TWO 10’s??  Right. :::sigh::: The judges are ranking. Laurie #1, James #2 – gotta get voting. Quite sure that Sharna can kill Val in a freestyle, but it probably won’t matter.

I can’t decide if this stealth cam is set up or true stealth. I saw them set it up for Derek and Marilu, but this looked stealth. I still wonder though.

So far, this looks like all of Jana’s dances.  the teacher is an interesting idea, but  I’m not sure it really adds anything. Oh, they’re having some trouble with it…it’s getting in the way.

Okay, at the end I have to say that wasn’t a very good freestyle. It started out okay, but got very messy with the tether and it just was…weird.

Oh Jules, you’re being kind. That scarf didn’t work. Props to Gleb for trying it, but it really didn’t work. Maybe if they had another week of rehearsal.

Ah poor Gleb. Now he’s making me cry. Nine’s are nothing to be ashamed of. Hey, Val – that was real emotion. Take notes.

Lindsay scares me. 🙂  Calvin is so awesome. I love him. 🙂

NOW THAT WAS A FREESTYLE!!! That was fantastic, brilliant and amazing – and it actually had stuff I haven’t seen before with the treadmills. Just amazing. Perfect. If it doesn’t get a perfect score, the fix is in.

THAT was really good. Lindsay takes the lead as best female choreographer in on DWTS. By a long shot. Sharna and Val have a shit ton of work to do.  Wow. Mind. Blown.

Damn straight that’s a perfect score. That’s what I want to see in a freestyle.

The La La Land dance was pretty cool. Why is Mandy so uneven in her choreography? I know all choreographers have bad dances but she seems more uneven than most.

Geez, Val. You want to talk to America? Try bringing some authenticity to your choreography and your packages. People WILL buy what you’re selling if it’s authentic. But I don’t get that from you.

Okay…fun, happy, happy freestyle. But nothing earth shattering or terribly exciting. Don’t get me wrong – it didn’t suck. And it’s not a freestyle that would cost her the win, but…

I’ll be disappointed if this gets a perfect score. It would normally be a 40 dance, I think….but it’s so far below Calvin’s in my opinion. His was more difficult and more innovative. There was just nothing new or exciting. But part of the problem is the allowing of props, extra dancers, etc during the regular season.

Oh shut UP, Val! Dang, you ruin it every time!

Hmmmm….not sure how I feel about that freestyle.  I think it was very different. The voice over worked, I think. It was very well danced. It was NOT cliche.  I think the music was perfectly chosen.

Julianne says “one of best freestyles ever” – don’t think I agree with that. It was very good.  I dunno, I think I have to sit on this one for a bit. It’s something I’m going to have to mull over. I hope the audience doesn’t have to mull it over. I think, judging by the scoring and the comments, that James has a real shot to win this. Not sure that dance was enough. I think it beats Laurie on emotion though.

So, I’m wrong AGAIN!! But happy to be wrong. 😉 Only working at 70% this season.  In case you didn’t guess, Jana and Gleb are eliminated – and they knew it too.

Very interesting, having James last to be called safe. I suspect they’re trying to suppress Calvin’s vote. Much the way Marilu was always called safe fairly early, they’re trying to lull Calvin’s fans into complacency. Not sure if Calvin being there really hurts James or not…I guess we find out tomorrow.

In closing….yes, I will do a new post tomorrow night and yes, I’m working on the numbers as we speak…It’s a toss up folks. If not for the running order and the filler, Calvin would have a real shot with his great freestyle. As he should. But because of the nitpicking all season, the scoring and the filler, I think it comes down to Laurie and James – and it’s not a sure thing either way. VOTE!!

Jana Kramer Writes Of Her Final Dances On Dancing With The Stars

Jana Kramer has written her last blog for Dancing With The Stars at People. She’s feeling a little weird as she goes into the Finals tonight and feels everyone is a winner. She also gives us hints for what’s to come. It sounds like Gleb is dancing even though he is still not feeling the best. More below and at the link.

It’s weird to realize that no one is really going home anymore. It’s just the end. This sounds so cheesy, but I feel like making it to the finals, we’ve all won. The only thing that separates us is one person will get the Mirrorball Trophy.

That said, we want that trophy and we’ve been working hard for it. Between rehearsals and interviews and everything, it’s been a crazy week and Gleb is feeling the pressure. I’ve never seen him this stressed before. He’s having to choreograph two very difficult routines and a lot is on his shoulders.

On top of all that, he’s really sick with the flu. He’s literally falling apart right now and had to reschedule rehearsals this weekend so he could rest a little more. He’s struggling.

Usually I’ll get wrapped up in the anxiety and stress of the people around me, but because I’ve worked with Gleb for so many weeks I have been staying really grounded and trying to relieve some of his stress. I don’t want this last week to be stressful. I want to enjoy it and really make the most of our last week dancing together. And to be honest, we trade off. Last week, I was so nervous and he calmed me down. Now it’s my turn to support him.

Our freestyle dance is going to be the most different because the other routines are going to be big productions with props and everything but ours won’t be like that. At first, I was a little bummed that we weren’t having all those bells and whistles but Gleb and I started this experience together and we’re going to end it together – just the two of us.

My redemption dance is the tango, and I’m really happy the judges chose that one for me. I was in extreme pain when we performed our first tango week 2, and I am so happy that they picked the dance because I love the tango and I always felt I could do it better than I did. The routine is a lot harder than the tango we did in week 2, and I feel really good about it. It feels great to see how much I’ve grown.

I’m also singing “Circles” on the finale Tuesday. “Circles” really is about piecing together a lot of broken parts and DWTS has been a large part of my ability to piece myself together, so I feel like everything is coming, well, full circle.

Gleb Savchenko Sick With The Flu, Hopes To Still Dance For The DWTS Finals

According to People and a multitude of other sources, Dancing With The Stars Gleb Savchenko has the flu and needs to rest. Let’s wish him the best and that he can dance on Monday. From everyone at PureDWTS, GET WELL SOON, Gleb!!!

“He has the flu and has to rest up this weekend so he can hopefully dance on Monday,” a source tells PEOPLE of the Dancing with the Stars pro.

Savchenko and his season 23 partner Jana Kramer are just two nights away from possibly winning the Mirrorball Trophy but the pro is having to reschedule rehearsals this weekend so he can rest, says the source.

Kramer and Savchenko are slated to face-off against Laurie Hernandez and Val Chmerkovskiy, Calvin Johnson and Lindsay Arnold and James Hinchcliffe and Sharna Burgess for two dances on Monday night. And if they are not eliminated Monday, they will have just 24 hours to learn a new dance for the season finale on Tuesday.

“Getting to the final week makes me already feel like a winner,” Kramer — who posted an Instagram Saturday of Savchenko wearing a mask in rehearsal — told reporters after last Monday’s live show. “But don’t get me wrong, I still want that Mirrorball!”

The source says Savchenko can’t imagine not performing Monday, but it will have to be a game-day decision. The pro dancer almost had to sit out of a live performance earlier in November after suffering a knee injury.

James Hinchcliffe Talks Of Competing Against Calvin Johnson And More Interviews

How does James Hinchcliffe feel about competing against former Detroit Lion Calvin Johnson in the finals of Dancing With The Stars? Find out below. From Detroit News…..

“He definitely surprised a lot of people coming out of the gate who weren’t sure a guy that size was going to be able to move,” Hinchcliffe says of his 6-foot, 5-inch competitor. “But man, he can move. There’s a reason he’s fast on the field.”

Hinchcliffe and Johnson are among the four celebrity dancers vying for the Mirror Ball Trophy in the finals of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” this week. In an exclusive interview with The Detroit News, Hinchcliffe shared how he and Johnson have bonded over the last 10 weeks and formed what many see as an adorable “bromance.”

“He’s a great guy to be around and always has a smile on his face, so it’s been a lot of fun, not only watching him dancing, but getting to know him, as well,” Hinchcliffe says in a phone call from Los Angeles.

The four-time IndyCar winner adds that he and Johnson tackle dance routines like their sports.

“In his case, he’s used to learning plays, and in my case, learning laps, and we’re used to repetition and long hours and putting in hard work,” he says, “and I think we went about learning dances in a very similar way.”

Their like-mindedness proved beneficial when they teamed up for a paso doble dance — calling themselves Last Men Standing — with their professional partners. The Western-themed routine earned a 37 out of 40 from the judges.

“Honestly, that’s the reason why you guys are the last men standing. … You guys both came out and rocked it,” judge Julianne Hough said in her comments afterward.

Hinchcliffe says he and 31-year-old Johnson “spoke the same language,” so they could easily lean on each other for certain steps.

As far as making it to the finals with his pro partner Sharna Burgess, Hinchcliffe says it’s “quite a surprise, but a pleasant one.”

“I came into this competition with — I wouldn’t even say low expectations — I’d say no expectations because I had no dancing experience, no dancing ability to my knowledge, so I didn’t know what to expect,” he says.

More at the Detroit News. You can also read more at the links below on Jana and Calvin.

The Season 23 Finalists Talk On Their Last Week Of Dancing With The Stars Rehearsals And More

If you go to Entertainment Tonight, the finalists of Dancing With The Stars Season 23 share stories from their stressful week of rehearsals and what they’ll miss the most about dancing. Here’s a part with Gleb and Jana. Gleb says their freestyle will be as exciting as their Shower dance.

“It’s been a very stressful week for [Gleb Savchenko],” country singer Jana Kramer explains. “Like, obviously I’m stressed, too, but he has to choreograph two dances. It’s the finals. He’s got to step it up in the choreography, so I think he’s stressed.”

“I was a little bit stressed, but today’s better,” Gleb adds. “We’ve got everything almost ready.”

Unfortunately, the two won’t be reprising their iconic shower dance as many fans expected. “I wish we were,” Jana confirms. “They won’t let us.” Instead, they’ll be reprising their sexy Viennese waltz from week one and a new freestyle that the two tease is sure to wow the crowd.

“This dance is going to be as exciting as the shower dance,” Gleb promises. “We got a great concept, a great song. The difference is the choreography and everything else is completely new. So, it’s going to be cool. A cool dance. I love it.”

I can’t wait to see what he’s up to. More with the other couples at Entertainment Tonight. You can also watch a video here.

Also below are interviews with Val and Laurie and an update on Miss Peta.

DWTS Season 23, The Semi-Finals – Dancing by the Numbers!

I find myself asking the exact same question that I’ve asked for the last couple weeks – does extreme pimpage (raving judges, over scoring, positive/mush/sentimental editing) work on an audience? I think it’s very clear that the answer is yes. Why? Trump. Enough said. And if they didn’t know that it worked, they wouldn’t do it so much.

But you have to wonder where the tipping point is: when do they go so far that the general viewer sees the man behind the curtain?? I mean, this past week the thing with Laurie was just…disgusting. Leave the poor child and her family to deal with their grief without making a public spectacle of it – that’s just distasteful. The raving over Jana – come on. The first part of the season I forgot she was even on the show. Boring. When does the general audience wake up and say, “dang, they’re really pushing so and so HARD.” Read more..
