Carrie Ann Inaba and Julianne Hough Write On DWTS Season 21 Week 3 By Lori

AH, DWTS! That show we know and love and occasionally strongly dislike. What would we ever do without its constant need to create as much drama as possible? Sometimes I think that we should have a running tally of all of the…. Crud… that they make us wade through and revisit during the down time after the season is over. I’m not sure how to find the humor in some of it, however.

This week’s biggest manufactured dramas is still ongoing, and has BY FAR surpassed the rest of the manufactured drama from those silly scripted packages (but at least trying to get the gullible public into thinking Alek is interested in Lindsay’s other childhood best friend keeps the public’s eyes off the real budding romance. Need to find some silver lining in the whole thing. Afterall, they owe them that much, especially after what they did last season). Yes, Kim’s stroke. Yes, I do believe that her leaving the show is the BEST thing for her and for her family. How TPTB went about it was wrong, and in my opinion, only meant to create the drama we now have. It’s creating some free publicity for the show, and they only had to COMPLETELY BLINDSIDE one of their pros and a celebrity they knew could quickly and easily create the buzz they want! Don’t make Tom be the bad guy, do the dirty work yourselves!

Carrie Ann addresses it quickly in her Parade blog by saying:

Last night’s sudden elimination of Kim Zolciak Biermann was a shocker. It was the first time in 21 seasons of Dancing with the Stars that anyone had to be dismissed from the competition due to her inability to perform. Kim was unable to dance last night after suffering a mini stroke last week while traveling. I wish her a speedy recovery and hope that she now has the time to take good care of herself. This was a first for DWTS. In past seasons, Dorothy Hamill, Jewel and Nancy O’Dell dropped out of the competition due to injuries, but they did so willingly. Jewel and Nancy O’Dell dropped out right before the season started back in 2009. And Dorothy Hamill pulled out of the competition mid-season due to a serious back injury in 2013. Injuries are a scary part of the territory of being on DWTS. A stroke is a whole different thing. And it’s very serious. So take care Kim, we are all rooting for you!

Hmmm… I don’t know what to think about what she says. What are your thoughts?

Carrie Ann’s highlight dances were Nick and Sharna’s, Alexa and Mark’s, Tamar and Val’s, Alek and Lindsay’s and Bindi and Derek’s. And she spends some time to give advice to the rest of the group, so go over there to check out what she has to say.

And Julianne’s weekly fashion blog over at InStyle has been posted with some behind the scenes. And surprisingly enough, SHE did her own make up on Monday! And I loved it, she did a great job! And yellow is definitely a great color on her.

I want to end this on a happy note, so if you want a good case of AWWWW and possibly some melted insides, check out this recent post from Washington Post sports page, they interviewed Julianne’s fiance, Brooks Laich.

Also, who wore it better this week: Julianne or Carrie Ann?

DWTS Who Wore it Better? Part XIII – The Chelsie Appreciation Edition

Well she may not be on the show this season, but “out of sight” is certainly not “out of mind” for us here at PureDWTS! What better time to show Chelsie she’s loved than now? 🙂

I must confess, due to my own pessimistic tendencies, this was originally supposed to be the Anna Apprecation Edition, because I was so certain she wouldn’t be back this season.  But thankfully, she is, and now I have inspiration to create subsequent editions of WWIB featuring all of the female pros – eventually. 😉 Finding costume dittos is hard sometimes, even for someone with a freakishly near-photographic memory like mine…

Battle of the peach jeweled ballgown: Brooke’s Viennese waltz with Derek in season 7 vs. Chelsie’s pro dance with Dmitry to Jewel in season 8

Heidi: I think the look worked on Brooke simply so that the dress didn’t detract from the emotion of the dance, which was a Viennese Waltz to Daughters, by John Mayer.  It’s kind of plain on her, otherwise. I prefer it on Chelsie, and I like her softer hairstyle with this dress. Of course, it could just be the lighting. 🙂

Courtney: I noticed several patterns with Chelsie’s costume choices while compiling this post.  The first is that she has an affinity for doing very lifty, contemporary choreo while wearing shortened ballgowns.  You can’t see in this picture, but this dress has actually been shortened substantially – check it out on the Randall website. May not be of any consequence to you guys, but I do find it kind of interesting how the costume department, when pressed for time & unable to create new costumes, just takes what they have on hand & changes it to work for them – very resourceful.  Anywho! I always thought the dress was very pretty on Brooke, but I’m not sure it’s a color she would pick for herself – seems too demure, and better suited to someone more wholesome and youthful, like Chelsie. And I’m not wild about Brooke’s hair – looks too…plastered down? Idk.

The winner: Chelsie, for better coloring…or maybe lighting.

Battle of the black, fringed, jewel-trimmed Latin dress: Chelsie in the season 11 finale opening dance vs. Anna’s opening credits shoot with Sugar Ray in season 12

Courtney: Another pattern I noticed with Chelsie: she is so freaking hard to get a decent screen cap of!!!!! Seriously – she never stops moving, and her technique is so good that she moves with such a range of motion that she’s seldom in a position where she’s facing the camera, in a neutral position.  I got so many bad screenshots of her moving her body in crazy ways that made it impossible to see her costume well.  She also seems fond of black-fringed costumes – this one is pretty similar to the one she wore for her cha-cha with Romeo, and she wore gloves for both.  In truth – I’m not wild about this version of the black-fringed costume.  Since there’s very little sparkle, it just seems to look a little blah on both ladies for me.  At least with the Romeo version, there was quite a bit of sparkle to give the costume some depth.  I prefer colored versions of this particular style, such as the hot pink & multicolored versions featured in WWIB Part XI.

Heidi: I don’t care for the long black gloves with the short, fringed latin dresses – I don’t get that wardrobe choice at all. Other than that, there isn’t much to say about it really – it’s hard to see but I really prefer the dress on Anna – and again, it could just be the background and the lighting influencing me. I’m so easy. 🙂

The winner: Anna by a hair…with an assist from the background & lighting 🙂

Battle of the sheer, white, feather-trimmed ballgown: Cheryl’s Viennese waltz with Chad in season 10 vs. Chelsie’s dance with Mark in the “America’s Favorite Dancers” show

Heidi: They all have their “tics” don’t they?? 🙂 Mark’s is high water pants and polka dots, Cheryl’s is the sheer ballgown skirt.  I much prefer Cheryl’s tic in this case, although I do find it a rather strange choice. As for who wore it better?? Well, I think Chelsie is wearing it like it’s a dress made for CHERYL, if that makes sense. It doesn’t really seem like it belongs on her, and I also prefer Cheryl’s hairstyle, as it is fancy, fancy, fancy…just like the dress.

Courtney: Ahhh yes – another representative of Cheryl’s ongoing infatuation with sheer-skirted ballgowns 🙂 This one is odd for me: I think the bodice is gorgeous, with all of the beading & delicate details, but the skirt…looks totally silly to me. Like they let a class of preschoolers decorate it with a bunch of feathers & pom-poms.  All that’s missing is the uncooked macaroni and you’ve got yourself a craft project! I don’t know…they both look good from the waist up, and bizarre from the waist down.  I’m apathetic.

The winner: Cheryl loves her some sheer skirts…and rocks them well.

Battle of the red, jeweled midriff Latin costume: Chelsie in the pro dance with the Mwano family in season 11 vs. Edyta’s salsa relay with Ashley in season 9

Courtney: Chelsie costuming pattern #3: she will never show her stomach completely.  Seriously…find me an example of her midriff being completely exposed and I will gladly admit I’m wrong.  She’ll wear cut-out dresses, or ones that show a teeny-tiny bit of belly, but then you’ve got 2-piece costumes like this where they slap a piece of mesh down the front.  This costume definitely had to go through some un-Edytafication before Chelsie would wear it…the mesh, the extra layer of fabric on the skirt to cover the sides, the increased chest coverage.  Normally I would give this one to Edyta, no contest, but the open sides of the skirt look weird to me.  Gotta go with Chelsie this time.

Heidi: Edyta, by a mile.  It was originally designed for her and by adding back material it just makes an already unfortunate dress worse. 🙂  When you add the mesh on the front it make the whole dress look heavy, what with the double patterned belts around the hips and under the bra line.  I think Edyta is just playing the part here better than Chelsie is – and damn that woman has a body.  🙂

The winner: Edyta, for playing the part.

Battle of the lavender, jewel-trimmed, one-shoulder ballgown: Kym’s Viennese waltz with Donny in season 9 vs. Chelsie’s Viennese waltz with Jake in the season 10 finale

Heidi: I think Chelsie is a bit too short for this dress – maybe if it was straight to the floor instead of layered it would work better for me. Both women look very pretty, but I’m gonna have to go with Kym, I believe.

Courtney: This is another thing I hate about screen-capping – it always makes colors look too warm.  The dress is closer to the color on the left than the color on the right – but it’s a pretty color, regardless.  I think it’s a good example of the “less is more” concept of costuming – very simple silhouette, flattering color, minimal trim.  Lovely 🙂 Looks great on both ladies, but I have to give this one to Kym – love her romantic wavy hair.  Looks like Chelsie may have been the victim of the dreaded quick-change, which usually necessitates un-fussy, generically-styled hair to fit multiple costumes.

The winner: She of the Awesome Boobage dominates once again.

Battle of the gold, fringed, halter-top Latin dress: Chelsie in the season 8 intros vs. Ashly in the 150th episode pro dance to “Hard to Handle” in season 6

Heidi: Hmmm….tough call. Both ladies wear this dress well. It compliments both Chelsie’s sunny, California girl look, and Ashly’s darker hair and complexion.  This one is a tough call!!  I think I’m leaning toward Chelsie, but I have to idea why. 🙂

Courtney: Maybe because we have a hard time believing a wholesome Mormon mommy like Ashly would pick out an outfit like this for herself? 😉 I dunno, at least that’s what I think – both ladies are on the wholesome side, but Chelsie is able to pull off sexier, flashier outfits a bit better, IMO.  The impression I get from Ashly in this dress is that “I had to wear a gold dress to match the other dancers, so I bit the bullet and picked out the most conservative one I could.” Plus I love the way a gold outfit looks paired with blonde hair 🙂

The winner: Chelsie, for looking more comfortable being sexy.

Battle of the pale blue, jeweled high-neck ballgown: Nicole’s waltz with Derek in season 10 vs. Chelsie’s pro dance with Dmitry to Goo Goo Dolls in season 11

Courtney: I had completely forgotten about this one – and now that I’m looking at it, I’m realizing that it is really a beautiful dress. Simple silhouette with delicate details.  Again, looks great on both ladies, but I’m gonna go with Nicole on this one – I think this dress is better balanced as a long dress, and the high neck looks a bit odd on Chelsie.

Heidi: I think the high collar on this dress rather begs for an upswept, formal hairstyle. It draws the eye to a nice neck and you don’t want your hair ruining the effect. So, I have to go with Nicole also. The bodice of the dress with the shorter length (and lack of shoes) on Chelsie just doesn’t look quite right.

The winner:  Nicole, by a length…of dress.

Dancing with the Stars – Who Wore It Better, Part III

As promised, here is your third weekly installment of our continuing analysis of reused costumes on the show. 🙂 While the first 2 editions dealt solely with costumes reused in season 10, this one is a mixed bag of dresses going as far back as season 5 – proof that if the folks at Randall are reeeeally having a hard time selling a costume to the public, some lucky/unlucky pro or celeb may get the privilege/punishment of having to wear it a second (or sometimes third!) time. Read and discuss!

Oh, and P.S. – we’re trying hard to do a guys’ edition of Who Wore it Better, but it’s proving to be really, really hard…so if you know of any dittos, please let us know, and please at least look up pictures or find them on youtube to ensure they are, in fact, the same costume – some of the ones that have been brought up to me are really just similar (but not identical) pieces.  😉

Battle of the black, silver-spangled Latin dress: Melissa’s cha-cha with Tony in season 8 vs. Kym in the ladies’ pro dance opener in season 9
Courtney: As an aside, I really didn’t care for that opening dance that the season 9 pro ladies did – it felt a little low-energy and kinda like it was just thrown together at the last minute to fill space (lord knows why). That probably explains why Kym just doesn’t look quite as “finished” in it as Melissa does – love the fedora and jewelry that really ties it together on her. Both gorgeous ladies with fabulous bodies – but I’m giving it to Melissa for having a little bit of extra “oomph”.
Heidi: Boy, this is a tough one! I do agree about the ladies pro dance – very messy, disjointed. As for the dress…not sure how I feel about the fedora on Melissa – it almost feels like overkill, what with the choker and the bracelets and the earings AND the hat. Who was the famous actress that said she always took one thing off before she left the house? This could have been done here to better effect. She needs to lose something from the head/neck area. That said, Kym is the opposite extreme – too minimalist. And really, those pro dances are the opening numbers so there’s really no excuse for it except maybe laziness.
The winner: Melissa, by a choker.

Battle of the short, red, fringed, Latin dress w/matching belt: Karina in the Michael Jackson tribute in season 9 vs. Julianne’s cha-cha with Helio in season 5
Heidi: Again, two beautiful girls who can wear just about anything. If I have to pick I have to go with Karina because of how well she can wear red. Jules wears it well too, but it looks better on Karina. Have to agree with Courtney, below, also – Jules’ hair is too severe.
Courtney: Now as adorable as Jules tends to look in pretty much anything she wears, I think I actually like this one better on Karina – it could be the lighting, but I think the red looks better against her skin than it does Julianne’s, who looks a bit more washed-out. Also prefer Karina’s loose curls to Julianne’s bump-it updo. I hate those damn things!!!
The winner: Karina, by the skin of her…skin.

Battle of multi-colored, neon-fringed Latin dress: Jewel’s would-be preseason photo shoot with Dmitry in season 8 vs. Misty’s mambo with Maks in season 7
Courtney: Ok, I’m putting it out there – this dress is cursed and should probably be burned due to bad karma. Misty donned it for a mambo; two weeks later she withdrew with a devastating Achilles’ tendon injury. Jewel wore it for her promo photo shoot; not long after she was sidelined with 2 fractured tibias and had to be replaced with Holly Madison. And really, this dress is just tacky with a capital T. I loathe neon – especially multiple shades of it on the same dress – and I particularly loathe it when it’s fringe. Blech. Nobody wins in this one!
Heidi: Have you noticed that Maks has a fondness for multicolored, bright, tacky dresses? It’s weird, because then he puts Joanna in a classy beautiful dress – which I’m going to credit to Derek since the design is done early in the week and Maks has a bad track record. 🙂 But yes, this is one nasty dress and they seem to pair it with bad hair and OTT jewelery.
The winner: Do you see any winners here? I sure don’t.

Battle of the two-piece, tri-color ruffled & feathered Latin dress: Joanna’s preseason photo shoot with Derek in season 9 vs. one of the dancers in the Tiempo Libre performance in season 9 vs. Kym’s samba with Warren in season 7
Heidi: Okay, I’ve decided that I don’t like multicolored dresses. Too, too much. But like every other possible article of clothing, Joanna can pull it off. Partly confidence, partly issues with her competitors, like Courtney says below.
Courtney: Poor Kym & unidentified Tiempo Libre performer – it’s really hard to hold a candle to Joanna in, well, pretty much any costume. And I daresay she rocks what would be an otherwise rather awkward dress pretty damn well – having a fab figure and a great spray tan doesn’t hurt, either. Kym looks a little pasty in the sunset color scheme; the costume just looks kinda loose on the brunette from Tiempo Libre.
The winner: Joanna, by default.

Battle of the silver-fringed, super-sparkly, cut-out Latin dress: Mya’s preseason photo shoot with Dmitry in season 9 vs. Lil Kim’s cha-cha with Derek in season 8
Courtney: Ok, observation: the lighting in the pre-season shoots never seems to do justice to some of these dresses the way the lights of the dance floor do. This is no exception – the dress just glows on Kim, while it barely reflects any light on Mya. Plus Mya’s pose just looks awkward to me – really kinda surprised they picked that one as her best shot. The dress seems to be wearing Mya, rather than the other way around. Kim DOMINATES this dress!
Heidi: Kim dominates everything. It’s all about confidence and attitude and Kim has plenty of both!! Both dresses were used early on too, so that’s not a reason. It’s weird too, because Mya was a trained dancer – I would expect a more confident stance from her even that early.
The winner: Kim by a ‘tude. 🙂

Battle of the blue-fringed & stoned Latin dress: Shawn’s samba with Mark in season 8 vs. Natalie’s preseason photo shoot in season 9
Heidi: Not a fan of this dress, really. I think it looks better on Shawn but only because she’s moving. Hate her hair and think they went overboard on the make up though. Natalie is fine in it and she has a beautiful smile. But I have to give it up to Shawn.
Courtney: Another instance where photo shoot lighting doesn’t do a girl any favors, and neither does standing still – this dress doesn’t look nearly as impressive on Natalie as it does on Shawn. I wouldn’t say it necessarily looks BAD on her, but it’s just kinda…blah.
The winner: Shawn, for not being a statue.

Battle of the long, dark blue, corseted paso dress: Brooke, Kym, & Cheryl in the team paso doble in season 7 vs. Kelly’s preseason photo shoot with Louis in season 9
Courtney: 4 very different ladies, one dress. Poor Cheryl – everything costume they made her wear in season 7 just seemed to look mediocre, and unfortunately this is no exception. I think what bothers me about Brooke wearing it is her expression – it’s supposed to be aggressive, but to me it looks more confused…so she’s out, too. Kym looks decent in it, but I really love Kelly in this one – the dramatic feel of the dress seems to suit her personality well, and looks good with her coloring.
Heidi: Love, love, LOVE this dress. It’s probably one of my favorites ever on the show. Love the color, love the corset, love the flowy skirt. Love. As for who wears it best? Well, not Cheryl, for reasons stated. She doesn’t look horrible in it, she just doesn’t hold up as well as her competitors. The thing I remember about this dress is Kym’s fierce face during the dance with Warren, and how beautifully they all pulled this dance off. I think the dress brought out the right attitude in all the women. Kelly? Yeah, I love it on her too. If I have to pick a winner, I’ll go with a tie between Brooke and Kym, mainly because of my fond memories of that dress.
The winner: Kelly, because Heidi can’t pick just one.

Random Dancing with the Stars News – Seasons 8 and 9

Jewel nixes the idea that she would try DWTS Season 9 – she and hubby Ty Murray (Season 8 – 4th place) are trying to have a baby.  Numerous websites are reporting this, but I’ve linked to Star Magazine.

We won’t be seeing this anytime soon, if the Star is correct.

I think all true DWTS addicts probably know by now that Louis Van Amstel, a professional dancer who was on several early seasons paired with Lisa Rinna (among others), has moved over to So You Think You Can Dance as a choreographer. And from what I’ve seen he’s doing a very good job. But that isn’t DWTS only connection to SYTYCD! DWTS Judge Carrie Ann Inaba has teamed up with the executive producer of SYTYCD, Nigel Lithgow, Katie Holmes and Director Adam Shankman to create Dizzy Feet Foundation. The steering committee of the foundation also boasts Paula Abdul, Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Lopez. The foundation’s Mission Statement includes providing scholarships and grants to talented dancers and choreographers working at or through accredited studios and to provide dance education programs to underpriviledged children.

You can see Katie Holmes dance to promote the foundation on So You Think You Can Dance’s 100th episode on July 23rd. Apparently, Katie dances very well. I would expect as much because, although I’ve never been a big fan, I did see her sing and dance on defunct show Eli Stone and she was surprisingly good.

Dmitry and Chelsie Riding Horses with Jewel and Ty

Jewel and Ty decided to turn the tables on Dmitry and Chelsie and teach them a little something new. Neither Chelsie or Dmitry had ridden horses before and so it’s kind of neat that Ty and Jewel could introduce them to something new.

Check out this short video that Jewel made of Dmitry and Chelsie riding a horse for the first time:

You can read more about the horse riding, target shooting, four-wheel riding, fishing and eating BBQ that happened with Jewel and Ty in between Dancing with the Stars practice sessions on Jewel’s blog.

I’m still really sad that Jewel is injured and out of Dancing with the Stars. I was really looking forward to her on the show after seeing her as a judge on Nashville Star. Plus, the husband wife dynamic would have been interesting as well.

Nancy O’Dell and Jewel Out of DWTS – Holly Madison In

I’d been reading rumors about Nancy O’Dell and Jewel being out of Dancing with the Stars. I even posted about Jewel’s injury previously, but it’s now official that both Nancy and Jewel are out of Dancing with the Stars.

Let’s take a look at a number of quotes I found around the web from Jewel and Nancy O’Dell about not being able to compete on Dancing with the Stars.

First a quote from Jewel about her injury and Jewel’s ongoing participation on DWTS.

“I originally thought it was tendinitis or ligament strains,” Jewel said before a concert appearance Thursday night in Highland, Calif. — which she would do sitting down. “It was painful enough for a doctor to put me on cortisone. When I went in for an MRI, it turned out to be something else. I had no idea something like this was possible.”

Jewel’s stress fractures are just below her knees, which had been swelling from a practice regimen of up to eight hours a day. They’ll heal in six to nine weeks, says Jewel, who is using crutches to get around.

“Hopefully I’ll get to sing on the show and come back and (compete) again,” Jewel says.

Now, a quote describing Nancy O’Dell’s injury:

“Beyond disappointment doesn’t even being to describe how I feel about not being able to continue on ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ It has been one of my favorite shows since season one!” O’Dell revealed. “But I have torn the meniscus in my knee in two places, which requires surgery. According to the doctor, one is a ‘significant’ tear and it will require my getting knee surgery within the next couple of weeks.”

Looks like Nancy O’Dell might return to another season of Dancing with the Stars and still enjoyed the short time she did have with Tony:

“DWTS’ was a great experience. I’ll miss working with my partner, Tony Dovolani, and all the other wonderful people on the amazing production that is ‘Dancing With the Stars,’” O’Dell added. “Tony has been an amazing teacher and dance partner and I feel horrible I can’t continue for him… Although short, it was a great experience. I challenged myself to take risk at doing something I had never done before!”

And don’t rule out a possible return to the show somewhere down the line.

“After I have surgery and eight weeks of rehab, my doctor tells me my knee will be back to how it was,” O’Dell said. “So that means if I have the opportunity to go back, I could!”

Dancing with the Stars executive producer Conrad Green said the following about injuries on Dancing with the Stars:

“We’ll re-look next season to limit the training in the early weeks, because I don’t want people to get injured,” he says. The 15-week-long show “is a marathon, not a sprint.”

There have been a number of injuries to stars and the professionals on Dancing with the stars. Among DWTS celebrities injured in previous seasons: Olympic volleyball player Misty May-Treanor (torn Achilles tendon); comic Jeffrey Ross (eye injury); actress Susan Lucci (fractured foot); and actor Cristián de la Fuente (torn arm tendon). Also, Julianne Hough had an operation, Derek Hough was taken to the hospital and Karina Smirnoff had some ankle or back issues if I’m remembering correctly. Seems like there was one other I’m leaving out.

Reports are saying that Holly Madison from Girls Next Door will be one of the replacements, but producers of the show are keeping quiet until the DWTS premiere on Monday. The report says that Bridget Marquardt (Holly’s costar on Girls Next Door) let it slip on live TV. This is what Bridget Marquardt had to say about it:

“I’m so excited for her,” Marquardt — who next stars in a Travel Channel show called Bridget’s Sexiest Beaches — told FOX’s Strategy Room Wednesday.

“She’s wanted to do it for so long,” Marquardt added. “It just never worked with her schedule and Hef was always like ‘I don’t want you to do that,’ and now it’s her time, so I’m really happy for her.”

Jewel and Nancy O’Dell are suppose to be at the premiere. Should be an exciting premiere, but I’ll admit that I’m personally sad that these 2 are off the show. They were 2 of the stars I was most excited to see on the show. They’ll definitely be missed. It will also be interesting to see how the judges score the 2 replacements who will have had less time to practice their dances for the show.

The Dancing with the Stars Premiere’s on Monday!

Jewel and Dmitry Chaplin on DWTS

UPDATE: Jewel won’t be competing on DWTS due to injury. Read more details about Jewel’s injury.

Copyright 2009 Craig Sjodin / ABC

Copyright 2009 Craig Sjodin / ABC

Jewel is paired with Dmitry Chaplin on Dancing with the Stars 2009. Jewel is such an interesting character. I’m not exactly sure how many fans she has since she made the switch to country (kind of). I’m not sure if that ticked off her old fans or if they didn’t care and still love Jewel. I personally don’t really like to hear her talk, but she does have a number of hits that I really love.

Jewel has really made a resurgence lately in the country music and so I think she has a rather vibrant fan base that will vote for her. She has beautiful long legs and should look great on the dance floor and get good scores with the judges. I see her dancing skills landing somewhere between Brooke Burke’s amazing lines and dance ability and Jane Seymour’s nice lines and grace on the dance floor.

Dmitry Chaplin is going to be a fan (at least girls) favorite. Being his first season on Dancing with the Stars will be quite the challenge for him to learn how to do all the dances and how to choreograph for a star who is not a dancer. The ladies loved him on So You Think You Can Dance and they’re going to love him on Dancing with the Stars.

Dmitry has also been on So You Think You Can Dance a number of times as a choreographer and so choreographing the routine won’t be new for him. Jewel and Dmitry will really be one of the most stunning looking couples that Dancing with the Stars has had on the show. Right up there with Derek and Brooke from last season or even Derek and Shannon Elizabeth who looked great together.

I’m interested to see how much dance skill Jewel has on the dance floor. So, I reserve the right to change my mind after seeing Jewel do her thing on the premiere. However, assuming she can move her hips, Dmitry and Jewel will be a really powerful couple.

Quick Dancing with the Stars Partner Round Up

I’m sure I’m missing a ton of things that are happening with all the various stars and professional dancers on Dancing with the Stars 8.  However, the traditional Hollywood media always covers every little bit of Dancing with the Stars.  I just can’t reasonably keep up.

Despite this major backup, I figured I’d cover a couple things I’d read recently that I thought were interesting about the coming season of Dancing with the Stars.

Let’s start with this video of the handsome actor Gilles Marini and 2 time winner Cheryl Burke on ET:

I love that Cheryl Burke basically rips Gilles Marini for having a bad memory. Kind of surprising since actors should have a good memory after memorizing all those scripts.

Cheryl and Gilles also reveal that Cha Cha is their first dance.

On to Jewel…

I think one of the best reads throughout this season of Dancing with the Stars is going to be Jewel’s blog. I only wish that it was a real blog and not some custom thing, but I’ll leave the tech for my other blog.

Check out a couple recent posts about Jewel’s pain in her knee:

I guess I really over did it on the rehearsal front! My knees have been hurting so badly that I finally broke down and talked to Ty’s knee doctor yesterday. He said I have tendonitis in my knees and that I have to start a course of medicine to try and bring the swelling down. Yuck! It’s mainly my left knee, and I can’t believe I hurt it so badly… Ty warned me I was over doing it, and now he got a big ol’ ‘I told you so’ in. The worst part is that I can’t rehearse for the next couple days. It was just so fun to dance 8 hours a day- especially considering I only had 3 weeks to cram not only for my first dance- cha cha, but to learn the fundamentals of about 6 other dances that I will have to know. But now I’m just worried I won’t even be able to dance! Hopefully these steroids will really do the trick and I can keep bad flare ups at a bay in the future.

Looks like Jewel will be dancing a Cha Cha at the DWTS premiere. I wonder if she’ll have to be tested for performance enhancing drugs (steroids) before she can compete.

You’ll also love this tidbit where Jewel says she’d happily lose Dancing with the Stars in return for being pregnant.

yesterday on the Billy Bush show, Ty said that he thinks his best chance of beating me is if I get pregnant during the show so I would be too tired to dance! Talk about a strategy! Haha… Of course, that would be fine with me if it did happen, so either way would be a win!

Belind Carlisle is comparing herself to Marie Osmond’s experience on DWTS:

Belinda is also taking a page from former “Dancing with the Stars” competitor Marie Osmond in that she has the same partner, is on the NutriSystem diet and will be juggling concert dates at the same time she is on the hit ABC series.

“I figure if Marie can do this and shows at the same time so can I. She’s my role model right now,” she says. Then she jokes, “I can eat a lot more NutriSystem snacks now. It all helps and I love to eat.”

I wonder if Belinda will decide to faint like Marie as well.

Finally, a few quick hits about Shawn Johnson on DWTS.

At 4 feet, 10 inches, Shawn Johnson, who turned 17 in January, was sure that her height would keep her from competing on the hit ABC series, so she says she was honored and surprised when they came to her with an offer.

She has been paired with Mark Ballas, who won the competition with Kristi Yamaguchi — also an Olympic gold medalist, but says that he had to ask her to wear three-inch heels in order for them to partner up.
“I am used to being barefoot [to perform gymnastics], so it is awkward,” she admits.

Shawn admits that she’s used to long hours in the gym and so that helps when doing the long hours on the dance floor. She also said that her first dance will be a Viennese Waltz.

Finally, don’t expect Shawn Johnson to be sharing any outfits with Edyta.

“They’ve actually said that since I’m younger I have to be a little more covered up than usual, just to make sure it’s age appropriate, which I don’t have a problem with, I’m used to being in a leotard, that’s pretty revealing,” she says.

“Dancing with the Stars” premieres Monday, March 9 at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Dmitry Chaplin and Chelsie Hightower Join DWTS Professionals

I’ve been fascinated with the interaction of dancers between Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance for a while now. Not only do I have a website that covers So You Think You Can Dance, but my regular readers might remember my previous post that contained a video of Nigel Lythgoe talking about Chelsie Hightower possibly being on Dancing with the Stars. My favorite line from Nigel in that video was when he said, “these kids have to work, so yeah I’m ok with her being on Dancing with the Stars.”

Well, it looks like Nigel Lythgoe (producer of So You Think You Can Dance) wasn’t just saying that off hand. Now Chelsie Hightower and Dmitry Chaplin were both announced as part of the latest Dancing with the Stars professionals. You can check out what I’ve written about Chelsie on So You Think You Can Dance and of course Dmitry on So You Think You Can Dance.

Funny thing is I remember them both very well. Dmitry Chaplin was most well known for taking his shirt off. Cat Deeley (host of So You Think You Can Dance) always liked to point out his either lack of shirt or wide open shirt. I have a feeling that Dancing with the Stars will make the most of that feature as well. However, Dmitry has actually been back on So You Think You Can Dance (including the Canadian version I believe) as a choreographer. So, Dmitry knows how to choreograph as well as he knows how to dance. Dmitry and Jewel will make a fantastic looking pair that will be stunningly beautiful to watch with amazing lines.

Chelsie Hightower on the other hand was a really odd character on So You Think You Can Dance. No one can argue that she was stunningly beautiful with some of the most distinct moves I’ve seen on the dance floor. When she was on the dance floor she was incredible to watch. However, back stage she was quite a bit of a tom boy and if I remember right she loved to burp all the time. I might have to go back and watch the video to make sure, but I’m pretty confident it was her. I believe her partner described her as one of the guys backstage and then this sexy fireball on stage (definitely not an exact quote, but you get the idea). Chelsie and Ty Murray will be an interesting partnership. Ty better hope that Chelsie’s fame from So You Think You Can Dance helps him get some votes, because I’m not sure many rodeo fans are going to be on the phones voting for him.

I’m very excited to see Chelsie and Dmitry on Dancing with the Stars. They are great additions to the show. Alongside Lacey Schwimmer, So You Think You Can Dance ballroom dancers are taking over as the professionals on Dancing with the Stars. Makes sense that the producers would want to do this. So You Think You Can Dance contestants bring their own base of fans with them and that can’t do anything but help Dancing with the Stars be that much bigger.
