DWTS13 End-of-Season Award Winners – Which Dance Was the Best?

You guys voted…now it’s time to reveal your picks for the bests and worsts of season 13!

Other responses (keep in mind I am paraphrasing, as there were some…creatively-written responses ;-)):

JR & Karina’s freestyle – 11

JR & Karina’s waltz – 7

Nancy & Tristan’s rumba – 4

JR & Karina’s rumba – 4

JR & Karina’s 1st jive – 4

Ricki & Derek’s rumba – 3

Ricki & Derek’s quickstep – 2

JR & Karina’s instant jive – 2

Rob & Cheryl’s tango – 1

Elisabetta & Val’s quickstep – 1

Ricki & Derek’s paso doble – 1

Ricki & Derek’s portion of the team paso doble – 1

Rob & Cheryl/JR & Karina’s instant samba – 1

Kristin & Mark’s samba – 1

Kristin & Mark’s quickstep – 1

JR & Karina’s “Vietnamese” waltz – 1 (I assume you meant “Viennese”? :-))

Chynna & Tony’s rumba – 1

Derek & Mark’s dance w/Charm – 1 (one of the results show dances)

Chaz & Lacey’s rumba – 1

Carson & Anna’s Vogue – 1

GET NANCY OFF THE STAGE – 1 (I have half a mind to toss this one out completely…)

None really impressed me to say they were the best – 1

Courtney: Can’t say I’m too surprised – choreographically, I think Ricki & Derek’s tango was really the strongest dance of the season, and the execution and performance value were there as well.  It’s also a great example of how a less-than-desirable song/theme isn’t necessarily a death sentence, if put in the hands of a creative pro – in fact, a challenging song can often push a pro to really rise to the occasion and crank out something incredible.  JR & Karina’s samba was fun & well-executed, but maybe not quite as creative; ditto for Rob & Cheryl’s samba.  Gotta say – I was kind of rooting for Carson & Anna’s cha-cha.  It has yet to get old for me 🙂 Nancy & Tristan’s foxtrot and Hope & Maks’ quickstep were both fun & light, but I actually think Hope & Maks’ foxtrot was a stronger dance, both performance-wise and technique-wise…but I feel like it got overlooked because it was wedged between two weeks where Hope didn’t do so great.  The quickstep happened during her “breakthrough” week, so I think it comparison it may have appeared better than it really was. Hope looked to me like she was holding on for dear life in the quickstep, but seemed much more at-ease during her foxtrot.  I dunno…it is what it is.  Other responses: I liked JR & Karina’s freestyle a lot, but for some reason (which I can’t really put my finger on), it’s lacking a certain something for me that would really qualify it as the best dance of the season.  I have to raise my eyebrows a bit at the fact that 4 people (or rather, 4 different IP addresses ;-)) really thought Nancy & Tristan’s rumba was the best dance of the season…I mean, the dirty glance Tristan tossed Carrie Ann’s way at the beginning was hot, but other than that…Nancy was kinda lifeless in that dance, at least for me. As I recall, the judges weren’t too keen on it, either.

Heidi: I think JR was up and down an awful lot for someone who won the show, actually – and their freestyle??  I know we discussed it at the time but I can’t put my finger on it either.  There was nothing really technical in it beyond the one or two lifts – I always seem to prefer the freestyles that stick to a lot of ballroom moves but break all the rules in terms of lifts and hold – which explains why I am a Derek fan. He generally puts a lot of ballroom in his freestyles.  Tristan and Nancy?? Just no.  I liked them as a couple, and Tristan is a cutie – but the jury is still out on his choreo skills.  Nothing I saw from them was “wow” – although I adored the Spamalot dance just cuz it was Spamalot. 🙂 And I’ll give credit to Maks’ fans for being loyal at least.  Best dance of the season? Nope. Their dances were just too awkward looking most of the time.

Vogue: I don’t think I’ll ever forget my jaw dropping during and after Ricki and Derek’s Psycho performance. I love it when that happens. I’m a huge fan of theatre-like dance productions anyway being a huge fan to Madonna and Lady Gaga. Derek covered all of his bases not only with the dance itself, but, with the costuming and the brilliant backdropping. This performance will go down as one of the ‘most memorable’ on Dancing With The Stars. I’ll never forget it. I also loved Maks and Hope’s Quickstep. I felt they were both finally starting to find their element with this dance. It was good to see her finally relaxing. Whatever the case, their Quickstep gets best costuming. 😀

Keep watching in the coming weeks as we reveal more of the results of your voting! 🙂

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)

DWTS Season 13 Champ JR Martinez Expecting First Child!!

Congratulations, JR and Diana Gonzalez-Jones!! I think he’s going to be a great father – his outlook on life is phenomenal. According to People.com:

J.R. Martinez tells PEOPLE exclusively that he and girlfriend Diana Gonzalez-Jones are expecting their first child next spring.

“We found out just last week it’s a girl and we are over the moon,” Martinez, 28, says. “Diana has a little baby bump now and it’s the cutest thing ever. With the holidays coming up, this is the biggest and best gift we could get.”

Dancing with the Stars LOLz – You Caption it!!

Now that the season is over, I thought it would be more fun if everyone had a chance to use their lolz skillz on some funny or interesting screen caps from the show.  I captioned the first two, but don’t let that stop you if you’ve got something better.  🙂  Lay it on us in the comments (make sure you tell us which pic the caption is for, just in case) and in a few days we’ll pick the best one – by “we” I mean me, John, Courtney and Vogue. 🙂  If you can’t think of more than one, tell us all – no limit on captions.

Vote for Your Favorites in the DWTS13 End-of-Season Awards!

It’s time once again to vote for your favorites/least favorites in our semiannual end-of-season awards! While Heidi & I’s cheesecake awards are more humorous (and just bestowed by she & I), this is a chance for you guys to weigh in on the bests and worsts of this past season, and for us to be a bit more serious.  To see examples of past award winners, check out the results of the season 11 & 12 end-of-season awards.

Of course, there are some guidelines before you vote.  Keep in mind that we tried to pick the most likely candidates for each category – ones that we felt most of you would probably pick, if asked.  There is no point in listing a dance like Ron & Peta’s cha-cha as a candidate for best dance of the season 😛 However, if your pick for a certain award is not listed, there is an “other” box that you can chose and write-in your own nomination.  But be warned: if I cannot read what you wrote, I’m not even gonna bother counting it.  Spell check, kids 🙂 And if you write in something that’s already been listed as one of the choices, I’m throwing your vote out on principle alone – kind of like those tests that sees if you read all the instructions before proceeding.  Things were a bit less chaotic for last season’s awards than for season 11’s, but I still got quite a few badly misspelled, grammatically confusing, and downright incoherent answers that I had to throw out.  For the sake of my sanity, kids – at least try to make your choices clear 😉  That said, VOTE AWAY! We’ll give you guys a week or two to get your votes in, and then we’ll reveal the results at a later date.

J.R. Martinez On Life After Winning Dancing With The Stars

What’s J.R. Martinez been up to since winning the Dancing With The Stars Mirror Ball? Has he missed his partner Karina Smirnoff, dancing, and rehearsing? Find out in this new interview on Access Hollywood where J.R. talks all about it. He brought his Mirror Ball for the interview as well which he hasn’t been seperated from since he won it. LOL! Note the mentions on Derek, his girlfriend, and what he says on his Mom as well.

How Did Your Early Predictions For DWTS Season 13 Stack Up With The Results?

1.Forecasting the frontrunners. She predicts that J.R. Martinez will walk away with the Mirror Ball trophy this season, with Ricki Lake and Rob Kardashian not far behind.

The above quote was taken from Fitness Magazine from an interview with Anna. She made that winning prediction for Season 13 in October. As you can see she ended up being dead on with it. This got me thinking about our Dancing With The Stars early prediction posts before Season 13 started. Do you remember how you ranked the contestants before they started dancing and were you wrong, right, or close?

Some of you posted your thoughts in Marianya’s Prediction Stat Post while some posted their predictions in Courtney’s Part One and Part Two Preliminary Power Ranking posts. As you can see, Courtney and Marianya were pretty close for how the competition turned out. What’s interesting is Marianya was probably the only one from almost all of us who predicted Rob to do so well….and what’s more Marianya put him as high as 3rd place!

Heidi ended up being amazingly psychic as always when she predicted Kristin to “pull an Audrina” by exiting the competition early in Marianya’s Post. She predicted the same with Chynna. Heidi also predicted J.R. to win in her Part 2 Ringers Post.

Almost all of us chose Rob and Nancy to finish last. The majority felt pretty negative on those two. To our pleasant surprise, we ended up loving them. Rob and Nancy ended up showing other sides to themselves that we didn’t know about and staying in the competition more than many of us forecasted.

Anyway, take a look back at the links above if interested. It’s fun to see how close or far we came from the results and what we (the bloggers and fans) wrote. My early first prediction for the top five were David, JR, Ricki, Elisabetta, and Kristin…and well, we all know how that turned out. LOL!!

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta Congratulates J.R. Martinez On His Dancing Victory!

How would you like to receive praise by the Defense Secretary for winning Dancing With The Stars? That’s just what happened to J.R.! Details below from the Hollywood Reporter as well news on J.R. next projects.

Martinez received a note from Defense Secretary Leon Panetta congratulating him on his win, as reported by The Washington Post.

“Your strength and spirit captivated the nation, and your victory sends a strong message about the strength and resilience of our wounded warriors,” Leon Panetta wrote in his note.

Pentagon spokesman Douglas Wilson told The Washington Post that Panetta would like to personally speak with Martinez.

As a newly crowned Dancing champion, Martinez will keep busy in the coming months. He will co-host the pre-show of CNN’s Heroes: An All-Star Tribute on Dec. 11 and is also taking part in the news network’s CNN Heroes: Where Are They Now? special running this Thursday.

Martinez spoke to The Hollywood Reporter after his win on Tuesday night. He had plenty of praise for his professional partner, Karina Smirnoff. “I’m just so grateful that I was able to be part of the journey to help get her first mirror ball trophy. She deserves it. She should be in the elite category of people who’ve won on this show,” Martinez said.

Mark Ballas And Louis Van Amstel Write About The DWTS 13 Finale

Louis Van Amstel has written a new blog at ABC on the Dancing With The Stars Season 13 finale. He describes how each of them deserved to win for different reasons: “Ricki Lake for consistency, J.R. Martinez for spirit and musicality, Rob Kardashian for most improved.”. Check out more of what he writes below and at the link. Yeah, I imagine he is jealous. LOL!!

J.R. winning “DWTS” Season 13 is in my opinion the right choice because overall he was closest to having the whole package of a champion: talent, heart, his personal story, plus the difficulty level of the choreography Karina taught J.R.

J.R. and Karina’s choreography was more challenging than the other couples’, and J.R. did deliver. He also had a few ups and downs, which showed what he was truly made of. America saw that and voted for J.R.’s devotion.

Big congratulations to pro Karina Smirnoff for winning her first mirrorball trophy. I’m jealous, lol!

Mark Ballas wrote on the night as well at USA Today. No one was more shocked to see Ricki and Derek get third than he was. Below are more of his thoughts on the night. You can read more on his plans for the off season at USA Today.

During rehearsal they had some slip-ups with a few of the lifts, and Karina was very nervous when they couldn’t nail them. J.R. came to the rescue and got her through it. These two have relied on each other throughout the season and have been the epitome of teamwork. They both are very deserving of the win!

That said, the other competitors did not make it easy. Rob (Kardashian) put up a fight; he showed up this week ready to leave with the trophy in his hands. Sometimes the pressure of the finals can make competitors crack, or it can make them focus even harder. Rob definitely falls in to the latter category. He was very smooth and determined all week, and that showed in his dances during the finals.

He couldn’t have done anything differently; he was pretty much perfect. This season was so unpredictable you never knew what was going to happen or who was going home. Maybe if Rob would have competed on a different season, he would have been the winner. Although second place is still a huge accomplishment and he should be proud.

My jaw dropped when Ricki (Lake) was announced in third place — I think everyone was a little shocked. This season was packed with talent, there was stiff competition and not everyone can win, but all three finalists were equally talented. It made for a gut-wrenching finals week. Derek (Hough) did an amazing job transforming Ricki into a dancer. Their freestyle was amazing and Ricki looked great. Her body completely changed over the course of 10 weeks. This show takes a lot of hard work and dedication, so props to Ricki for sticking with it.
