DWTS Season 13, Week 3 – Dancing by the Numbers

Well, personal stories night. As I said in an earlier post – never a favorite of mine. It’s still not a favorite of mine, although it was not as dreadful as I had anticipated it might be. 🙂

I think it obviously comes down to, this week, Chaz and Nancy; they’ve isolated (as best they could) the rest of the dancers from the threat of going home. Now, as always, there are no guarantees, but Chaz has a serious uphill climb to stick around. If he beats Nancy, can Nancy rally votes to get past Carson? Well, it is my personal opinion that neither can get past Carson – dude is just too freakin’ hilarious and I would wager he takes out far better dancers than Nancy and Chaz before all is said and done.

The real question in my mind is – just how few people were voting for David? It’s not always a question of Chaz and Nancy (and Carson) getting tons of votes, but a question of someone else getting zilch. It may sound like I’m parsing with that, but I don’t think I am. Say, hypothetically, JR and Ricki each get a million votes. And, in comparison, Chaz and Nancy are only getting 100k each. Obviously, that’s a huge disparity right? But what if David is only getting, like, 10k? See what I mean? Chaz and Nancy aren’t getting a ton of votes (hypothetically), but David is doing even worse. THAT is the question in my mind right now. Is he doing really bad?

Let’s look at the numbers.

The Judges Scores and Percentages

Place Celebrity Score Percentage
1. Ricki 27 11.39
2. JR 26 10.97
2. Chynna 26 10.97
4. Rob 24 10.13
4. Kristin 24 10.13
4. David 24 10.13
4. Hope 24 10.13
8. Carson 23 9.7
9. Nancy 21 8.86
10. Chaz 18 7.59

In order to stay, Chaz will need a whopping 12,660 votes per million votes cast more than Nancy.

Can he do it? No clue. Chaz is the one person (well, one of 3) who I have no clear feel for how he’s being received on a large scale and what kind of population is voting for him. Next in line to him is Nancy – another person that I’m just not sure about. Sure, we find her engaging, and her partner is cute (but seriously, if that was all it took Maks would have won by now) – but she, like Chaz, is a very polarizing figure on a national stage. So which one is more polarizing? I tend to think it’s Chaz, but that Nancy really isn’t connecting to people who ONLY watch the show and none of the surrounding media. If you go back and watch the first 3 episodes and don’t consider ANYTHING else – is she coming off as warm as we know she is? I’m not sure about that. Also, for as much as Len appreciates Tristan’s choreography and as much as I appreciate his cute face, it’s obvious he hasn’t yet adjusted to choreographing for TV. Step it up, sweetheart, you’re getting a tad dull. And the biggest danger in a show full of characters is being dull. You can be a crap-ish dancer with a huge personality and go a long way (Ty Murray, Kelly O) or you can be a great dancer but be dull or annoying (Audrina, Sabrina) and leave way early. The other option is being a great dancer and ALSO making an impact on people’s memories – that is the safe bet. But it’s really bad to be a mediocre dancer AND be dull. It’s not too late – you can turn it around!

ANYWAY, what happens if Chaz gets his 12,660 more votes per million than Nancy? Where does Carson play into this little drama? What does it take for Carson to leave and Chaz and Nancy to stay? BOTH of the following have to happen:

–  Chaz gets 21,100 more votes per million votes cast than Carson does, AND;
–  Nancy gets 8,450 more votes per million votes cast than Carson does.

If those two score those votes and everyone else is getting more votes than Carson? Carson goes home. But really, how likely do you think that is? Not likely at all, in my book. Much more likely that either Chaz or Nancy goes home.

Now, what happens if people (okay, me, Courtney and most of the people reading this site) have totally underestimated Chaz…and Nancy? What if we’ve totally OVER estimated the strength of others on this show? Who? Well, David was in the real bottom 2 last week. Let’s say the producer manipulations didn’t take and he’s still not getting the votes. Was he well insulated enough? For David to go home, ALL of the following have to happen:

–  Rob, Kristin and Hope all have to get ONE more vote per million vote cast than him, AND;
–  Chaz has to get 25,320 more votes per million votes cast than David, AND;
–  Nancy has to get 12,660 more votes per million votes cast than David, AND;
–  Carson has to get 4,220 more votes per millon votes cast than David.

What are the odds? That’s very hard to say. Certainly I think that Rob, Kristin and Hope all can get one lousy vote. But what about Chaz, Nancy and Carson? Even though David was in the bottom 2 last week, he also was only a point a head of Chaz and tied with Carson in judge’s scores. Not really hard to imagine Carson getting one more vote than him and Chaz getting 4,500 more votes. However, Chaz DID get close to 18k more than Elisabetta. Is David doing as poorly as Elisabetta was? I kinda doubt it – he’s much more well known. Plus, the margins are wider this week. Still, if Tom utters (or Tweets) the words “shocking elimination” – David will be my first thought.

A few people have been mentioning Kristin’s lack of impact. Is she in any danger this week? For her to go home, just replace David’s name with hers in the above list. We have no idea how Kristin is doing in the voting, but she’s not getting a whole lot of attention from anyone other than Mark, whereas David got a motivation to his voting base by being in a real bottom 2, plus he got the pimp spot last night with little Coco cheering him on.

When all is said and done, I think it’s between Chaz and Nancy, with David as the wild card. My instinct is that it’s REALLY between Chaz and David, mainly because they worked so freakin’ hard to get David the votes to stay. The question is – where they successful? I kind of think maybe they were, which drops it back to Chaz and Nancy with, IMO, Chaz not making the cut.

But dang – I am so conflicted. I don’t have any degree of certainty about what will end up happening. This is rather exciting. 🙂

DWTS13 Week 3 Interviews After The Dance Part 2 (Videos)

Lot’s to still cover! First up, below is a recap and a review on the night with Louis Van Amstel on Good Morning America. See if you don’t agree with him? I thought he did a super job and I pretty much agree.

Louis also reviews the couples in his new ABC Dancing With The Stars blog >>>>HERE if you are interested in checking it out. He nailed it for how I feel on Kristin and Marks’ dance…

I’m watching the package and I wonder what the personal story is? Kristin looks hot, hot, hot, and is very feminine, but I wish she would actually believe it and express it more internally.

Ok, onto some new Access Hollywood interviews….

DWTS13 Week 3 Interviews After The Dance Part 1 (Videos)

Let’s get right to all the new interviews after the dances last night and who better to do it with than George Pennacchio of KTLA and On The Red Carpet!

First up, Maks and Hope!! Maks is so happy and proud of Hope. He doesn’t plan to buy into the “I’m not sexy” stuff that Hope is always saying. Hope says the sexiness is deep inside and it’s taking a ‘special someone’ to pull it out of her (she points to Maks!)

Next up, Carson and Anna! They are totally excited with the results of their dance. The Tango is “who he is”. They talk of collaborating on their costume designs. They are so glad to be here and that he is getting more confident and more relaxed. They show off George’s CIA notes!

Chynna and Tony talk of all the cool support they are getting. She talks of her personal story and is thankful for a standing ovation. George talks of how much Billy Baldwin is helping them.

DWTS13 Week 3 Power Rankings

Ok, so “best year of my life” night wasn’t quite the emotional trainwreck I was thinking it would be – I was actually pleasantly surprised at the honesty and vulnerability of many of the dances. However, I was also just downright confused by some of the dances. 😛 Let’s just get right to it, shall we?

1.) JR & Karina – Say what you will about JR “playing to people’s emotions” (ummm…didn’t everyone kinda do that tonight, to a certain degree?), but he was the only one tonight that I though even came close to having the proper hip technique, and he made me feel the emotions behind his dance more than anyone else.  Was Karina dancing around him? Maybe a bit, but I did see him actually attempting to “be there” for her at every turn – reminded me a lot of Chris’ rumba last season.  I wish Karina would have given him a bit more to do, but I think the way he let his face “talk” in the dance was captivating.  The guy has had a heartbreaking backstory – let him tell it without writing it off as “playing the sob story card” (actual tweet I read – some people really do have garlic in their soul like the Grinch!).  Emotion aside – it was still a pretty damn good rumba. I grow to love JR more and more each week, and based on what I’ve seen from him so far – I can only assume the best is yet to come 😉 Thankfully, he tied for the 2nd highest score, and had probably the most memorable dance of the night, so I’m sure we’ll get to see what he has in store for us!

2.) Ricki & Derek – Admittedly, I thought this one was overscored at first – but then I watched it again and realized that they were the ones who best combined choreography, technique, storytelling, and connection to the dance tonight.  I felt like they actually managed to tell a story through their movements, and the choreo wasn’t overly dramatic – it was simple & stripped-down.  Technique? Eh…I thought JR & Chynna both had better technique than Ricki, but hers wasn’t bad.  The rumba’s a tricky dance, so I’m not really expecting any of the couples to really nail it at this point.  Was a little thrown by their song at first – all I could think of was Mia’s drug addiction piece from SYTYCD – but by the time they got through it and told their story, I kinda got it. High score of the night, and a pretty good rumba in a sea of less impressive ones…I’d say they’re pretty safe, especially with such a drop-off in points further down the scoreboard. Read more..

DWTS 13 Inside Mark Ballas and Kristin Cavallari’s Samba Rehearsals (Video)

The Insider goes inside Mark and Kristin’s rehearsal studio on their second day of practicing for the Samba. Mark comments how they were able to go through the whole routine the day before and Kristin “mostly knows it”. Mark has designed her costume. It’s going to be full of glitter, but, she refuses to show her stomach like he wants. He’s hoping to change her mind by Monday. You can view them practicing for the dance a little in the video below.

Kristin also talked with Ryan Seacrest about their Samba tonight and having a small breakdown, romance rumors, her costume (it’s RED!), and more….

Hmmm,…this is going to be one interesting night on Dancing With The Stars. 🙂

DWTS Week 3 Mark Ballas On The Samba: “You Will All Be Impressed” (Videos)

Kristin and Mark visited the KIISfm studios this week. They give JoJo some Salsa lessons. He wishes them luck on Dancing With The Stars by giving them wardrobe malfunction protection, corn covers, and a first aid kit. Mark and Kristin tell us why we should vote for them.

Mark also has a new blog up at USA Today. He writes of he and Kristin practicing for the Samba.

“The samba means you have to shake it like you’ve never shook it before. And let me tell you, Kristin is quite the sambista!”

Below is take about their rehearsals. Be sure to visit the link if you’d like to read on how he felt while dancing with the pros last week. You can also read on the current injuries and how he felt about the judges.

Rehearsals have been very productive and she listens very well. That has helped us this week, as the samba has been a little bit of a challenge. It’s the kind of dance, where, if just one little thing goes wrong, it has a domino effect on the whole routine. We’ve had to put in some extra rehearsal time but I guarantee that you all will be impressed with the performance.

Ok, well,…we will see. 😀
