DWTS Season 12 Casting Rumors – The Typecasting of Season 12, Part II

In part one of my typecasting analysis, we took a look at who we might get from the Olympian, athlete, model, comedian, legend, & soap star categories.  Now let’s take a look at the other 6 categories and speculate on who else we might see before tonight’s cast announcement!

EDITOR’S NOTE: The site is getting hit with an extraordinary amount of hits right now (which is great! :-D) but it’s also slowing us bloggers down while we post – hence, there are no links in this edition because it’s just taking too long to add them all in.  However, you can access all of the DWTS casting rumors in Vogue’s post from the other day if you need a refresher on some of these 🙂

The Teen Idol

Previous examples: Joey McIntyre, Aaron Carter, Donny Osmond, Lance Bass, Mel B., Joey Fatone, Drew Lachey, Joey Lawrence, Ian Ziering, Cody Linley, Sabrina Bryan, Mario Lopez, Kyle Massey

Advantages: If sales of Tiger Beat are any indicator, the teenyboppers will come out in full force to support their favorite heartthrobs/idols.  Being young & good-lookin’ sure doesn’t hurt! Many also have the added advantage of having a decent dance background, especially if they were part of a musical act.

Disadvantages: Youth can also have its disadvantages – as in immaturity.  What some might call “youthful exuberance”, others might call “immaturity” or “attention deficit disorder” – poor Cody Linley had a hard time sitting still! Emotional immaturity (a la Aaron Carter’s post-rumba meltdown in the confessional) can be especially off-putting.

Possible candidates this season: I think the Lindsay Lohan rumor has been almost completely shot down, but Full House fans have been campaigning for both Jodie Sweetin & Candace Cameron Bure in the online voting.  I’ve also seen a surge of support within the past few days for New Kids on the Block member Jonathan Knight to do the show.

The Host

Previous examples: Jerry Springer, Brooke Burke, Leeza Gibbons, Mario Lopez, Kenny Mayne, Lisa Rinna, Tucker Carlson, Mark Dacascos, Rocco DiSpirito, Erin Andrews

Advantages: Being that they’ve been at the helm of their own shows, these guys usually have the media savvy & charisma to appeal to the masses, as well as the previous exposure & recognizability.  Most (not all!) are also decently attractive, which never seems to hurt (unless, of course, you’re a model – see previous post for explanation).

Disadvantages: Many hosts are only used to hosting – as in just sitting down & talking (or dodging the occasional punch, if you’re Springer), so the lack of movement experience problem seems to come into play.

Possible candidates this season: Wendy Williams name has been repeated quite a bit, although Joan Rivers’ name was out there for awhile as a possible contestant.

The Actor

Previous examples: John O’Hurley, Melissa Joan Hart, Steve Guttenburg, John Ratzenberger, Debi Mazar, Denise Richards, Ted McGinley, Shannon Elizabeth, Jennie Garth, Vivica Fox, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Shannen Doherty, Jennifer Grey, David Hasselhoff

Advantages: Being that their bread & butter is acting, most can usually nail the emotions of the dances. Bonus points if they’ve done any Broadway (like Winokur) because they have likely had dance experience.

Disadvantages: For lack of a better term, many of them seem to be “has-beens” – actors that haven’t been particularly active in the mainstream in the past several years – or were never that big to begin with (can anyone else think of anything John O’Hurley has been in BESIDES Seinfeld?), making it harder for them to garner votes from a public who may not remember them.

Possible candidates this season: Lorenzo Lamas has been claiming he’s on the casting “short list” for weeks now, so we’re thinking he’s a lock.

The Reality Star

Previous examples: Kim Kardashian, Kelly Osbourne, Melissa Rycroft, Steve-O, Holly Madison, Trista Sutter, Shanna Moakler, Kate Gosselin, Jake Pavelka, Audrina Patridge, The Situation

Advantages: Many have achieved pop culture icon status on their respective reality outlets, making them fairly recognizable.

Disadvantages: They may be memorable for the wrong reasons – people tended to remember things like Kim Kardashian’s sex tape more than her reality show, and people seemed more focused on Holly Madison’s split from Hef than her antics on The Girls Next Door.  Many can also come across as attention-hungry & talentless – reality TV is often looked down upon as a way to get famous without having any talent whatsoever.

Possible candidates this season: Aside from the omnipresent Heidi Montag rumor and ridiculous rumors about both NeNe Leakes & Kim Zolciak from The Real Housewives of Atlanta, we’ve also heard of former Idol contestant Danny Gokey gunning for a spot.

The Singer:

Previous examples: Mya, Billy Ray Cyrus, Mario, Belinda Carlisle, Master P, Chuck Wicks, Sara Evans, Willa Ford, Monique Coleman, Toni Braxton, Macy Gray, Nicole Scherzinger

Advantages: As with the teen idols, many have had dance experience concurrent with their music careers.

Disadvantages: Most seem to be committed solely to one genre of music (often R&B or country), making it hard to appeal to a wide fanbase.

Possible candidates this season: There’s been big campaigns in the online voting for both Zack Wilde & Paul Byrom, but nothing really “legit” to go off of.

The Wild Card

Previous examples: Heather Mills, Tom DeLay, Mark Cuban, Steve Wozniak, Priscilla Presley, Buzz Aldrin, Bristol Palin

Advantages: The sheer novelty of having someone with such an off-the-beaten-path claim to fame (famous divorcee/widow, entrepreneur, disgraced politician, etc.) may be enough to have the public voting them – just to see what happens.  Being the “underdog” is a powerful thing…as we saw with Bristol last season!

Disadvantages: Due to their often dubious fame, people just may not have any clue who they are – I personally had to Google Mark Cuban’s name. There’s also the risk of backlash from some viewers who don’t think they’re “stars” per se, and shouldn’t even be on the show in the first place.

Possible candidates this season: Not sure if it was the hailstorm of controversy from Bristol last season or what, but this category was booming with rumors this season – everyone from Tony Robbins to Christine O’Donnell to Al Sharpton to Brooke Mueller.  Will any of them actually do the show? That remains to be seen.

So we’re mere hours away from the official announcement, gang – who do you think is in and who do you think is just wishful thinking? Be sure to check back here for Heidi’s Casting Announcement Live Blog starting at 8 PM EST…she (and the rest of us) suffer through The Bachelor so you don’t have to 🙂 And make sure you’re following @puredwts & @tvblog on Twitter for up-to-the-minute updates on who’s in!

DWTS Season 12 – Rumors, Hopes, and I Wish

As we enter the rumor season of the year, I want to remind everyone of the real breakdown of what we see on the net. Not everything is actually a rumor. And interestingly enough, today we have examples of all three possible situations when it comes to the potential cast of next season’s DWTS. 🙂

Category 1 – The Actual Rumor

Today, as EVERYONE has heard by now, the rumor is Lindsay Lohan. Prior to today, it fell more in the category of heresay, but now we have Radar Online saying it’s nearly a done deal. Just a website? Maybe, but like me (pats self on back) they have actually gotten it right at times. It’s officially a rumor:

This could be the ultimate comeback.

Lindsay Lohan is secretly in talks to be a contestant on the hit show Dancing With the Stars, RadarOnline.com has learned exclusively.
After what seemed like endless legal woes that landed her in jail and now rehab, Lindsay is negotiating for the chance to change her image by appearing one ABC’s mega hit.

“Lindsay has been talking with the DWTS people,” a source close to the actress exclusively told RadarOnline.com. “She is definitely interested and considering being on the show.”

Of course, Gossip Cop says it ain’t so and quotes her Rep:

Gossip Cop looked into the matter again to see whether anything had cha-cha-changed.

We can bust the rumor once and for all.

“Lindsay Lohan is not doing Dancing with the Stars,” her rep exclusively tells Gossip Cop. “The story is false.”

Category 2 – Hope (aka “Please Put me on DWTS”)

Many, MANY people label this as “rumor”, perhaps in an attempt to get traffic to their site? But someone telling everyone who will listen that they want to be on the show does not qualify as a rumor someone is going to be on the show in except very rare cases (Kate Gosselin being one, who I reported as wanting it and eventually ended up thinking she was going to get it, thanks to Jay Leno. 🙂 ). Today, in the Category of “Hope,” we have Ne Ne Leakes talking to People.com:

Will NeNe Leakes be the first of Bravo’s Real Housewives to be tapped for ABC’s Dancing with the Stars?

The Atlanta Housewife, who’s been getting a taste of reality competition while filming The Celebrity Apprentice, which is expected to air in March, says she’d be thrilled to get the call from the Dancing producers.

“Absolutely. They need a black girl like me. They really do,” Leakes, 42, said on TBS’s Lopez Tonight. “They need a black girl like me to keep it real on the show.”

Category 3 – I WISH

This doesn’t fall in either of the previous two categories. It’s not being rumored extensively to the point that you think where there’s smoke there might be fire, but it’s also not a celeb expressing their desires. It’s someone on twitter or elsewhere asking their favorite celeb if they’re going to be on DWTS, but doing it in a way that it makes me do a bit of research to see if there is any possibility or if someone is just throwing stuff at a wall to see what sticks. 🙂 I call it “I wish” because this is usually what it’s all about. Someone is wishing upon a star. Today, our “wish” candidate is one that I wish were true or it even had a remote possibility of being true – Kristen Chenowith. This came up as a random tweet TO Kristen last night (which is why I’m actually posting it) – of course I can’t find the tweet again, but last night I checked and she never responded to it. It could be because she’s currently starring in “Promises Promises” on Broadway. I also think she’s too big for DWTS, in addition to being a little busy.  Oh! Found the Tweet.

Oh crap, just checked the Official Site for Promises Promises and it’s closing in January. I’m getting my hopes up. I hate when that happens. 🙂

DWTS – Media Who Is It, Dance With me Updates

Hi!!! How are all of you Pure Dancettes today?? Just a few media updates. First of all, would you like to guess which pro-dancer this is? Answer will be revealed in the comment section tomorrow sometime. 😉

Next, and special thanks to PureDWTS fan Evaine, here is Maks with a new “Dance with me Soho” update. He tells us what he’s been up to and introduces Tony as his new partner in his dance studio ventures. They both are shooting a really HOT photo shoot that I can’t get enough of. I want too see more. Maks has disabled the embedding, but, you can SEE IT >>>HERE at his You Tube Channel.

Special thanks to PureDWTS fan Figmentation for more news on the “Same Sex Couple” idea. It sounds like ABC is canning the idea for now. Here is a take from Celebuzz.

After toying with the idea of including a same-sex couple on the next season of Dancing With the Stars, ABC has abandoned the notion, PopEater’s Rob Shuter reports.

A source within the network tells Shuter that the plan fell through after Ellen DeGeneres’ wife Portia de Rossi turned down an offer to appear on the show and ABC was unable to come up with a non-controversial replacement:

“If Portia had agreed then this would have been a done deal. She was the only star that could have pulled this off without completely offending the program’s conservative viewers.”

Now, the source adds, producers have decided to hold off on the idea for a few years, hoping that cultural attitudes change, and don’t plan to “rush into creating a same-sex dancing couple just to get attention and publicity.”

In other DWTS ideas and possible contenders, what do you think about the idea of Lindsay Lohan as a contestant next Season? I’m kind of negative on the idea. It depends if she’s kicked her drug habits and done her time. Though that is controversial in and of itself being she’s never had to fully serve it. Why, I don’t know? Don’t the courts realize how much they are hurting her by letting her have her way? But, here is Kyle Massey’s thoughts. He’d also like to see Oprah and Kayne West do the show. Oh boy, not sure on the Kayne West idea either. 😮

Speaking of Kyle, he and Lacey helped with “Skating With The Stars” this past week. Unfortunately, the couple they helped had to back out since one of them was sick. From The Examiner. I love Lacey’s advice on how every “move” should mean something and be performed with intent. So true.

‘Dancing with the Stars’: Kyle, Lacey coach ‘Skating’s’ Brandon, Keauna — One of the most popular pairs from Season 11 of Dancing with the Stars appeared again on television Monday night. Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer were brought in to coach Skating with the Stars’ competitors Brandon Mychal Smith and his professional partner, Keauna McLaughlin.

Mr. Smith and Ms. McLaughlin visited the dancing couple in the dance studio. There, they learned about choreography. Lacey Schwimmer told Brandon Smith that every move had to mean something. Each move must be performed with intent and tell part of the story the routine was trying to convey to the audience.

Although the skating pair seemed to gain ground from the Dancing with the Stars duo, unfortunately illness prevented Brandon Smith from competing live Monday evening. His partner, Keauna McLaughlin was in costume and ready to perform in case he appeared at the last minute, but he did not. Instead, ABC ran a video of the pair’s last rehearsal, shot on Sunday.

If you are in Las Vegas on Dec. 10th, be sure to check out Karina Smirnoff as she is planning to join the Chippendales and host “Ultimate Girl’s Night Out”. Here is take from Vegas News. Check the link for ticket information and more if interested.

On Friday, December 10, the Men of Chippendales – the global icon in women’s entertainment – will be joined by Karina Smirnoff of Dancing with the Stars, as she celebrates her new engagement with girlfriends and also hosts The Ultimate Girls Night Out!.

Karina will join the Chippendales onstage as part of the show’s ongoing celebrity guest host series which has recently featured The Bachelor winner Vienna Girardi and model/actress Estella Warren. In addition, Karina will be escorted on the red carpet by the iconic men who have recently been voted the Best of Las Vegas 2010 – Best Male Revue by both editors and readers of the Las Vegas Review Journal. A fan and media favorite of the hit ABC television show, Karina will be joined by a group of girlfriends, all coming to Las Vegas to celebrate her recent engagement to Major League baseball pitcher, Brad Penny, at Chippendales.

Movieline has rated their Top 10 Reality Shows for 2010. They’ve put “Dancing With The Stas” at #10. Here’s why…

10. Dancing with the StarsTV’s schmaltziest hour of dance and pseudo-fame is usually worth a couple episodes of actual entertainment, but this year, Bristol Palin’s relentless survival turned the show into a musical remake of Network. Fans rioted, ratings boomed, dignity died, and viewer outrage felt as flammable as one of Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s leisure suits. Though Jennifer Grey won the season, it was Bristol Palin’s weak hoofing and dictatorial reign that made for violently good TV.

I promised….I am not going to say a word. 😮 lol

Lastly, here is Chelsey and Kym on Access Hollywood doing a promo for their “Dancing” workout DVDs. Margaret Cho joins them as well.

Ok Kids, that is all for now. Though if you haven’t done so yet, don’t forget to VOTE in our “End of The Season Awards” >>>>>HERE!! Also, a reminder to VOTE in the “People’s Choice Awards” as well if you want to see the show and your favorite dancers win an award(s) this year >>>>HERE!!

DWTS Season 11 New Rumor – Ryan O’Neal

Well, didn’t see this one coming and I don’t recall hearing his name mentioned in connection with the show – until now. The article itself is really about Linday Lohan, and Derek and Mark’s comments about her being on the show. From E!s Marc Malkin by way of MSNBC/Today Show:

Fellow hoofer Derek Hough seconds that. “If she did it, I’d be game,” he said. “It’s cool because you do see people turn their lives around on “Dancing With the Stars.” It keeps them fit. It’s nice to see people a year later who started on the new health regime and have kept on track.”

However, Hough warns that Lohan should only compete if she’s focused. “You have to want to do the show,” he said. “You should never come into the show having a manger or any agent or anybody telling you should do this. You need to want to do it. Those are the people who do the best, who want to be there and they’re excited about it. They’re not just there because somebody told them to do it.”

They then talk about all the rumors we’ve heard before, but then throw this little tidbit out at the very end. Take it for what it’s worth – and I don’t know what that is. 🙂

We’ve also been told by a source that Ryan O’Neal is still in talks with producers but he hasn’t decided yet if he’ll take the plunge.
