Dancing with the Stars Season 23, Week 6 – Dancing by the Numbers!

Another week, another bout of wackiness when it comes to judges scoring – luckily not as bad as in previous weeks.  Well, perhaps I should say ‘not as widespread’ as in previous weeks because it was still pretty bad in at least one instance.

If Len had been around this week, Jana would have gotten a 7 or 8 for her Argentine Tango – I think you can count on it. He’s shown recently that he doesn’t limit that just to Derek’s partners. But he wasn’t there so the travesty of Jana getting a perfect score while the better AT is three points lower. Why? Well, I suspect that Jana has been on the bubble and the leader board this week reflects the top half (to the judges) and the bottom half…with Marilu kinda straddling the middle ground, which is quite dangerous. The judges, I think, have roughly grouped the couples in that way – with the possibility of Calvin falling out of favor and Marilu rising. I think the jury is out for them on those two couples. Everyone else is either top three or bottom three. Read more..

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. DWTS Season 23, Week 7 – Who’s Dancing What…and When?

My cynical side (which is more than a “side” at this point and more like 2 thirds), says that “Decades” week  is a cluster f@#k waiting to happen. I mean really, there are some craptastic decades for music and this is a show that has real trouble picking appropriate music when NOT limited to specific decades.

ETA: Running order is up.  Tentative on team dances – apparently Team Future went first in rehearsal, but George didn’t indicate whether they were also going first during the actual show.  Judging from the way the running order is set up, I’m guessing they end up calling Ryan, Marilu, Maureen, & Jana in jeopardy – two members of each team. -Court- Read more..

PureDWTS Season 23, Week 6 – Power Rankings

DISCLAIMER: As I write this, I am currently under the influence of some new migraine meds that have the unfortunate side effect of making me very, very foggy – if my struggle to find the word “paint can opener” the other day at Sherwin Williams was any indicator, I’m definitely experiencing some aphasia; additionally, the fact that I put a carton of coconut milk in my purse and put my iPhone in the refrigerator while putting away groceries yesterday probably points to some general absentmindedness.  So forgive me if the words don’t come as easily today as they usually do – I’m told this passes after about the two week mark, so fingers crossed…

…and perhaps it is the effects of the medication, or perhaps not, but I’m left feeling a bit unsure of what to make of last night’s show.  I guess I should have known by about the 20 minute mark that things had already gone completely off the rails – we had Pitbull prematurely scoring (and then being completely late scoring the rest of the night, and having a suspiciously hard time with those paddles), Erin making painfully obvious double entendres about Ryan’s “facials”, and Ryan trying to make black light paint a thing, but having it look more like sunburn art. Then there was that pinata that Erin was curiously insistent that everyone hit, but only appeared to be filled with glitter.  Go fig…but perhaps more peculiar was the scoring, which at times left me wondering what exactly the agenda really was.  Part of me thinks TPTB may be falling out of love with Laurie (or may at least be seeing that she may not actually be a sure thing for the win), they seem suddenly obsessed with Jana (after appearing to be rather lukewarm about her thus far this season), they seemed to very slightly ease up on their “underscore Calvin at all costs” edict of the past several weeks, they seemed to finally drop the hammer on Terra (after heaping sometimes over-the-top praise on her the first few weeks of the season), and they seem to kick their praise of James into overdrive (which even I, as a James fan, can agree was a bit too much).  Are they trying to shape their ideal finale? Or are they even taking it a step further, and shifting gears from gunning for a Laurie win…to gunning for a James win? I think it will be very, very interesting to see how things go once Len is back on the panel next week…when daddy’s away, the other three stooges seem to play; but when he’s back, they seem to get back to business.

Wish I could say I was sad to see Amber leave, but I got the impression that she really wasn’t having much fun anymore, and that she never really got comfortable being on the show – so I don’t think she was all that disappointed to go, either. I think Maks collected his paycheck and is happy to be back to being a stay-at-home-dad-to-be. I didn’t see too many fans outrageously upset, either – Amber’s exit was minimally disruptive. I’ll admit – at one point in the show, I told myself I wouldn’t be terribly disappointed if Jana left instead of Amber, but in the end, I guess I’m partially glad the former stayed, because I think Gleb is more of an asset to Marilu’s team dance than Maks ever would have been.  Speaking of which – if you haven’t yet, check out our team dance spoiler post, if for no other reason than to justify my waking up at 2 AM to reveal the teams 😛 Read more..

PureDWTS Season 23 Week 6 – Media, Scores, And Interviews

What another great show last night on Dancing With The Stars. My three favorites this week were James & Sharna, Calvin & Lindsay, and Jana & Gleb. More on that later in Court’s new Power Ranking post. Below is some media and new interviews after the show, but, first, let’s review the scores. Also note that next week, is “Various Decades” week and the Team Dances (see this spoiler post for more info)….and Len Goodman will return to the judges’ table.

Jana & Gleb 40 (10, 10, 10, 10)
James & Sharna 38 (10, 9, 9, 10)
Calvin & Lindsay 37 (9, 10, 9, 9)
Laurie & Val 37 (9, 9, 9, 10)
Marilu & Derek 34 (8, 9, 9, 8)
Maureen & Artem 31 (8, 7, 8, 8)
Ryan & Cheryl 30 (7, 8, 8, 7)
Terra & Sasha 30 (7, 8, 8, 7)
Amber & Maks 28 (7, 7, 7, 7) Eliminated

From Glamour:

Backstage after the show, Amber admitted that she realistically didn’t expect to get much of anywhere on the show. “I didn’t think I was going to win; I didn’t think I was going to make it the first week. I didn’t think I was going to make it half-way! I came on and just tried.”

As much as the process wasn’t a walk in the park for Amber, she reiterated backstage that she’s bonded for life with her partner. “Me and Maks…we’re family forever.” That’s pretty major for someone who says she was blindsided by the realities of signing up for DWTS. “They told me I was going to do maybe two to three hours [of rehearsal] a couple days a week, no big deal. It became my life!” So what’s next for the model/spokeswoman? “I’m going to try and take a vacation…just go to the beach somewhere!”

In the other news, head judge Len Goodman will return next week, and we’ll be there to bring it all to you!

From Fox11:

After the show, Rose told FOX411 about her spat with Maks: “I think that’s just life. It’s a competition. He has been dancing for thirty years. I haven’t and sometimes it gets very frustrating and sh*t happens and you just get through it and me and Maks are family forever.

“Literally, after that we called each other and it was just like, ‘Oh, my God, we can never argue like that again. I f–ing love you.’ And then we just went in the next day and just practiced,” she said.

Maks downplayed his apparent anger in rehearsal, saying he was faking for the cameras: “I think I punched the wall or something. That was in fun just to see if [producers] would use it and they f*cking have. That’s amazing.”

Rose said she’d learned the show is, as she said on camera, HARD, and she would warn her close friend, Rob Kardashian’s galpal Chyna (now heavily pregnant), of that for the future: “If Chyna wants to do ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ I’ll be like, girl, ‘Listen, it is no joke and I’m about to tell you exactly what it’s going to be like because they lied to me before I got on here and told me I was going to do maybe, two, three hours a couple days a week, no big deal.’ And…it became my life.”

The beauty laughed backstage as she carried her dance shoes that she would throw them: “I’m going to ‘roof’ these b–ches!” And she planned to take a beach vacation with her little son soon.

Here’s some DWTS All Access coverage thanks to Stormy….

People has a couple of fun recaps on the night at this link. You might want to check back later to see if they add more.

PureDWTS Season 23, Week 7 – The Team Dances REVEALED!!!! **SPOILERS**

Ok kids, since it’s likely well into the late hours of the evening (or the wee hours of the morning, depending on what time zone you’re in), I’ll get right to it – after Monday night’s show, the couples picked teams for the team dances next week.  By virtue of having the two highest cumulative point totals (186 and 184 points, respectively), Laurie and James were appointed the team captains (for those curious, the 3rd place finisher, with a distant 171 points, was Jana). Here’s how the teams shook out after all the picking was done… Read more..

Dancing with the Stars Season 23, Week 6 – LIVE BLOG!!

Site rules in are effect – don’t hit refresh every 2 minutes, make sure you’re not posting one-liners, etc. Thank you. 🙂

:::sigh::: Tired of the pimpage. Real tired. I guess we’re not putting Laurie in the first half of the show until it no longer matters. Like week 8, perhaps.

I see Pitbull is still afraid to have a male dancer anywhere in hi vicinity unless it’s like a flash mob. He’s gotta have Witney and Sharna on his arm doing the very complicated choreography of hair flipping and looking sexy. :::yawn:::

Derek, at least, was hilarious in the opening. Actually, the whole opening was unintentionally hilarious.

Dang, Pitbull can’t even sit next to a guy…what’s he afraid of? Boy cooties?

Results before the dancing? HATE.

Ryan and Cheryl are safe and dancing first. No kidding.

Is that a really bad contouring job on Ryan or my imagination?  Or on purpose? Disappointed in Cheryl’s choreo this week, while I appreciate day glow.

Julianne’s hair is…big. I think it looks good actually.  But…he nailed it? Ummm…kind. Okay that overall score was pretty kind.

James and Sharna are safe.

Terra and Sasha are safe.

Amber and Maks are in jeopardy.

Marilu and Derek are Safe.

Damn, if only I had a prayer of looking as good as Marilu when I get to be her age. Dang.

Loved Terra’s package. Dance is a bit too soft, but the choreo is pretty inventive. I love it. Oh, she was hunching over a bit there. Pretty good dance. I expect raves cuz they always go too far.

Okay, I’m agreeing with Julianne and Bruno and the audience really needs to STFU already.

This scoring seems…dictated. Really, Julianne had all that commentary and then throws out an 8? Not that I disagree with it, but it seems…weird.

No, the only thing in Amber’s way is NOT just Amber. Just sayin’.

They gonna dance at some point? That might be a new record for Maks screwing’ around.

What dancing she did seemed pretty good though – didn’t see any obvious mistakes, but it was kinda…low key.

I agree with Julianne’s comments. Not sure that dance was worse than Ryan’s though.

And James silly package is why he could absolutely win this season.

Okay, not usually a fan of rumba, but that looked like a pretty damn good one.

Those are fair scores, I think. But they are making room at at the top of the leaderboard for Laurie…who is the biggest ringer dancing the simplest dance tonight. How long do we have to wait for her to be challenged?

Okay, so Marilu kept the right attitude, but I’m not sure she got all that choreo in there. I thought her legs looked a bit weird. But her legs are great, no doubt. As usual with Derek’s partners I have to watch the dance later to get a real feel for it. I tend to actually judge his partners harder than your usual fan.

Okay, I dig that score. Ooooo…hottie guy from the show after this one in the audience.

Next Couple safe….Laurie and Val.

Calvin and Lindsey – Jeopardy (damn it)

Maureen and Artem – Safe (damn it)

See what over and underscoring gets you?? If Calvin goes home, Imma cut a beyotch.

Jana and Gleb – Jeopardy.

LOL – Gleb is not a good actor. He was totally fed that “sexiest dance ever” line and just didn’t pull it off. And sorry Jana fans, but she’s totally disingenuous.

That was, I thought, a very good Argentine Tango.  The problem I had with it was that it was trying too hard. The bed portion was just ridiculous. The shower part was cool though.  I think this is one of those instances when inside info ruins a dance for me. Not that I was complaining.

I don’t know it’s worth the four 10s it’s probably going to get. Yeah, over scored by four points. Makes me wonder if she’s not getting the votes.

What is it with these eastern European guys and their inability to teach their partners the right way. Derek used to act like that…when he was 21. Seems like these guys get into it every week.

I do love Maureen’s attitude.  She did look petrified at the beginning of that dance though.

Oh boy, missed quite a few steps there at the beginning. Why do they give the total novice dancer the Samba and give the ringer the Salsa? Why?

That’s about the right score for Maureen. No one commented on the steps did they?

Okay, this AT blew Jana’s right out of the water in terms of technicality, difficulty….just amazing. Incredible. And all without the cheapness – no bed, no shower.  Should be another perfect score, but I doubt they’ll get it.

And Emma just said on All Access that this dance was every bit as good as Jana’s…and yet you already heard Julianne nitpick.  Calvin’s going to get ripped off yet again.

And Emma also just said that Calvin’s score was too low. Damn right girl. Hosed, he was.

This one time that Laurie suffers from going last. She goes right after one of the best ATs ever. And while she dances amazing – I’m left feeling kinda blah. The choreo wasn’t bad, wasn’t great. Of course she danced it well and did the lift well (gymnast). I’m not sure if she’s memorable…which might be why she’s going last.

I’m going to have to agree with Julianne and CAI – that was not a perfect dance.

Jana is safe – which sucks. Calvin….please.

The person going home tonight is….Amber and Maks.  Thank you baby Jesus. Not that I dislike Amber…I just didn’t want it to be Calvin.

Heh. Derek clearly thinks the red room cameras have been turned off. He’s so wrong. 😉
