Dancing With The Stars Jaleel White: “I bow down to the beast…that is the dance floor!”

“I bow down to the beast…that is the dance floor!” ~Jaleel White on his elimination!

I have to give Jaleel some props last night. Although I was never wild about his dancing and some of his behaviors through the controversies that came out, he handled his elimination like a pro and better than I thought he would. He took it with a big smile and was thankful for his time and the new friends he made on Dancing With The Stars. Also, the quote above will be one I file away in my Dancing With The Stars memory book! Thanks Jaleel and good luck with all of your future and personal endeavors!!

So, let’s see what Jaleel and Kym had to say after their elimination. Here they are on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE (David Arquette joins in on the fun! Let’s just say…there is a lot of bleeping going on), On The Red Carpet, Good Morning America (check out how his daughter called Kym a “princess”. Kym and Jaleel think katherine will win the competition), and Entertainment Tonight (this one includes some thoughts from his fellow competitors).

DWTS14 Week 8 Details On Next Week’s Two Dances, One Will Be A “Trio” Dance

What would we do without George Pennacchio of On The Red Carpet? Once again, he interviews the couples after Results night to find out what he can for next week’s dances. He found out there will be no theme night (Yay!) and that the couples will have two dances next week …a Ballroom dance and a Latin dance. To add a “twist” to the night, the Latin dance will be danced with a third person. The dance is called a “Trio” dance. How it works is that the remaining couples get to pick another pro who has been eliminated or who is a member of the troupe to help them and then they perform together (if I’m understanding this right?). Don’t forget there will also be a double elimination as well next week making it even more challenging and stressfull for the couples. Listen closely below for more details and then look for more thoughts from Heidi and I afterwards. Note also that Maria & Derek and William & Cheryl weren’t interviewed.

Ok, here we go….

Maks and Melissa are so thankful to their fans for keeping them in the competition. Maks goes through the numbers (Heidi will find this interesting!). Melissa is happy she gets to stay and keep dancing. They are dancing with Val for their “Trio” dance which will be a Samba.

Donald is going to keep working hard. He wants in the finals. He’s a little nervous about having two dances and one with another person, but, and he will do whatever it takes. (Adding: In a new ET interview, Peta mentions they have a Tango and a Jive for next week. Karina is their pro for the Trio dance).

Katherine was worried she and Mark might leave last night. They are happy they weren’t eliminated. Mark explains how the dances will work next week, but, won’t reveal their dances or much else.

Roshon says he’s learning so much on the show. He’s taking it ‘step by step’ and he’s glad he’s still here. George praises him for his ‘class’ for smiling through bad news and that he still get’s out there to work hard and he’s happy and thankful. Chelsie explains the dances next week. They have the Paso Doble for their “Trio” dance. They have the Fox Trot for their ballroom dance.

Roshon and Chelsie were also interviewed by Access Hollywood…

Adding: Below is an Afterbuzz TV interview with Maks, Melissa, and Tony as well. Tony has been picked for one the Trio dances, but, not sure who yet? Thanks to Evaine for the heads up on this in the comments.

Adding #2: According to Cheryl’s blog just posted at OK! Magazine, she and William have the Fox Trot and the Paso Doble for next week. No mention on who their pro will be for the Trio dance. More below…

Next week is two individual dances, so you’ll really see who can handle two dances and who can’t. We have the foxtrot and the paso doble. I think the paso is going to be one of William’s favorite dances so I think that will be really exciting. And then the foxtrot, I think will be fun, too, so we just have to see what happens and work hard.

We may add more later. So, what do you think of the way they are doing next week’s dances? I’m not sure what to think yet? It sounds exciting, but, I’m clueless. lol Let’s get Heidi’s thoughts and be sure to tell us your thoughts as well….

Heidi: I think Maks should not try to do the math. 🙂 He should just come here. But look away for a minute if you’re sensitive….@#$%$# Jesus Christ, can’t they just let this f#@king show alone?? A third person in their dance??  WHY!?!?!?  STUPID. RIDICULOUS. Let them f@#king dance!! :::sigh::: That said…I’m sure that a couple pros (Derek, Mark) will rise to this challenge quite well and we might see something great. But the better odds are that we’ll see something stupid as hell.

SPOILERS!!! DWTS Season 14, Week 7 – Who Got the Boot??

Thank god, the dance duels are OVER!!  Pretty sure that what went down tonight was NOT what the producers had in mind. Two good dancers up against each other, while the lesser dancer remains.

That’s right, it was Jaleel versus Roshon doing the Rumba….and that was the half I got right in my numbers post. 🙂  But there is no predicting the judges and they actually ALL voted to save Roshon.  Question is – Will Melissa fall out in the double elimination next week with Roshon, or will it take out Maria instead?? Or one of the favorites??

What did we predict?? Well…

Heidi: I predicted Roshon would dance against Jaleel in the duel and would lose. My second choice was Melissa versus Jaleel with Jaleel winning.

Courtney: Put Jaleel versus Melissa in the duel with Melissa going home; outside chance of Jaleel versus Roshon.

Vogue: Said it was Jaleel’s time to go.

Technically, even though I called the bottom two right, VOGUE was the only one who called the loser. 🙂

DWTS Season 14, Week 7 – Dancing by the Numbers

I’m the only one in my family that is into DWTS. This season, my little sister decided to start watching because she knows I work on two websites that are related to it. She’s taken to texting me during the show, but we have little to no discussion about it on a regular basis. But you can tell we’re from the same family. 🙂 Here is a direct quote from my little sister regarding the team dances:

Please mention on your websites that the gratuitous shirtlessness is getting ridiculous and kind of insulting – as if they take off their shirts and we silly women would be dumb enough to vote for that reason alone. Pathetic manipulation pisses me off. Just dance, stupid.

And that pretty much sums up the team dances. She and I neither live in the same town, nor talk on twitter. She wasn’t even a fan of DWTS before this season. Team Tango was so superior to Team Paso that I can’t even believe there was only one point between them. Mark, Derek and Kym’s fingerprints were all over that…saw some of Derek/Kym’s standard moves for teams with a few new nuances that seemed like Mark. Have no idea if Chelsie is in there or not, but it’s clear that all four of them worked in harmony – with the blessing of their celeb partners. Mark can’t get Katherine to do something, so Derek gives it a try. Nice team work. Team Paso, on the other hand, seems to have gotten caught up in their own hype – and frankly, kudos to the men (William and Donald) who made at least token protests against going shirtless. How about you choreograph the damn dance AND pay attention to your partners??? It was sloppy, it borrowed from last season’s team Paso…it just wasn’t as good as it was scored. You know, I have no problem with shirtless men – Derek never did it before his Lambada with Joanna but has done it occasionally after that; maybe once or twice a season. Never really minded when Maks did it, even though I likely made several sarcastic comments about it. 🙂 Dmitry?? Always has his shirt way open – Always – he’s very proud. Yes, I do tend to mock that. But last night it seemed like their WHOLE entire goal was to get the shirts off those men, in hopes that “us stupid wimmen” would just fall over, enraptured. Ummm…no. It was SO predictable that it annoyed me.

Anyway, I was rather shocked that Katherine did the rumba that I expected but was scored rather appropriately. Shocking. 🙂 Major props to her and Mark for their lovely reaction to Maria and Derek’s dance and scores – I love seeing stuff like that. It’s a shame the dance duel works against that sort of camaraderie.  I am in agreement with Courtney when she says that some couples (Melissa and Maks in particular) got totally screwed by the music.  Derek and Maria worked very well within their musical framework, but I don’t see a way that Maks could do the same for his dance.   Don’t know what the hell was going on during Roshon’s dance, but I don’t feel he was totally underscored this week…but who can say when several seconds were lost with a view of the giant mirror ball?

Let’s look at the couples and their percentages of the total:

The Judges Scores and Percentages

Place Celebrity Score Percentage
1. Maria 57 15.53
2. Katherine 54 14.71
3. William 53 14.44
3. Donald 53 14.44
5. Roshon 52 14.17
6. Jaleel 51 13.90
7. Melissa 47 12.81

Louis Van Amstel, Tristan MacManus, Karina Smirnoff, And Tony Dovolani Review Week 7 On Dancing With The Stars

Louis pens a new blog at ABC for what he thought of the dances for Classical night on Dancing With The Stars. Like many of us, he thought the judges scores were a little low for Melissa and Maks. He’s worried the most for them. He pretty much pegged it until I read what he wrote for Derek and Maria. What do you think? I totally disagree. They deserved every bit of the 10’s they received in my opinion. Heidi’s right. He seems to have issues with Derek?

Maria Menounos and Derek Hough’s Paso Doble. Maria looks so beautiful in that red dress — very appropriate for Paso Doble and the song they were given. In comparison, I believe Maria is the lesser dancer of the remaining celebs. That routine is easier than the others and her movement is sometimes stiff — even though it’s Paso Doble. Having said that, Maria has an iron determination and doesn’t surrender. I highly applaud her for that. Even though the video package showed her insecurity and frustration, she did deliver a very solid performance. Sorry judges, I really liked it, but not enough for Katherine to have to watch her back. Wow, I can’t believe the judges comments and scores. I’d say three 8′s for difficulty level and maybe two 9′s for performance. Not 10′s.

Overall. It’s now up to you guys to vote for your favorite couple. I’m mostly worried for Melissa, but in my opinion I feel the judges over scored Maria to save her. Or will Roshon be the one going home because he’s been in the bottom two a few times already?

Tristan MacManus had some thoughts on the night as well at Entertainment Weekly.

On Monday’s Classical Night dances: I saw a couple of them all right, didn’t get to see them all. Good competition tonight eh? Derek and Maria were really really good, so it’s nice to see someone get a full score I guess. Certainly after a difficult week, and at this point in the competition it’s good to see someone get those scores.

Donald Driver wants that 30! It’ll put a spark in him. If he can see now that someone can get them, then he’ll want to make sure they get the next perfect score. Donald’s great, he’s gonna be around for awhile.

Who will make the finals? I don’t really know! The way the competition’s going, you don’t really know what’s going to happen week to week. Might be easy enough to pick out one week who’s gonna be there, and then the next week, like I said, because the competition is so hard, next week someone turns around and has an unbelievable performance, know what I mean? Even if you look at the scores for this week — last week, people were saying well Maria, she didn’t do a great performance. And now she’s got perfect scores. I think Donald’s gonna be there, certainly. He’s been great from the start. I’d really like to see him do well. Mark and Katherine were superb as well. Maybe Maks and Melissa didn’t have a great night tonight, but as the weeks have been going on and on, she’s certainly been getting better. I thought they were quite good tonight. You never really know!

On William Levy initially shying away from Team Shirtless: Well, I guess if I think about it, had I been on that team, there would have been a team decision. It wouldn’t be just my decision. That’s what happens — if you’re dancing for yourself and your partner it’s easy enough to make a decision there, but when you’ve six people on a team, well…he didn’t want to take his top off tonight, and he ended up taking his top off. That’s what happens. Yeah, it was what it was.

Below is Karina Smirnoff and Tony Dovolani’s thoughts on Classical night at Good Morning America this morning. They have nothing but high praise for Maria and Derek! Great review on the night. Check out Karina’s mention on Maks and his tights!

PureDWTS Season 14 Week 7 Media Interviews After Dance Night

I always love the On The Red Carpet interviews with George Pennacchio! Let’s get to them right away to see what the dancers thought of their dances.

First up, Derek and Maria! George tells Maria her feet scare him. Derek says she never complains even though he knows her feet are killing her. They never thought they’d get three 10’s last night or that they’d be the first to do so. They are very happy. George says there is something special with Derek and the Paso Doble. Isn’t that the truth?!!

Donald wanted the first triple tens, but, that’s ok. He’s going to keep trying. Quitting is not an option and he’s having so much fun. He loves his partner.

William is happy for the improvement he’s made. That’s all he cares about versus the judges scoring. Cheryl switches the topic and talks of how crazy the audience went when he took his shirt off for Team Paso. She insists that’s what people want to see (really, Cheryl?). He just wants to keep putting his heart and soul into it all.

Roshon and Chelsea loved being welcomed back into the competition from Carrie Anne. They were proud of what they brought for the Team tango dance. Roshon is dancing in his sleep and while he’s awake.

DWTS 14 Week 7 Power Rankings

If there is one take-home point I want you guys to glean from this season, it’s that THEME WEEKS OFTEN SCREW THE COUPLES! No exception here – I think only two couples managed to churn out something worthwhile from the pieces of music they were given, and the rest either muddled through or failed miserably.  Consequently, I find myself cutting some breaks tonight, just due to some really bad music selections.  And let’s just say there was some “creative” storytelling going on this week…warriors & mannequins & vampires, oh my! 😯 I am beyond relieved that it’s back to business as usual next week…no wacky themes to throw couples off their game.  So there’s also going to be no excuses for subpar performances…game on, kiddies 😉

Thoughts on the team dances: I thought Team Tango (aka Team Tiny Hat :-P) was quite a bit better than Team Paso (aka Team No Shirt, No Problem ;-)).  I saw no timing issues or missteps on Team Tango – everything was in synch, and aside from a couple of small wobbles from Jaleel & Maria, I saw no glaring mistakes.  I also thought they had the more interesting floor patterns  – lots of visually-pleasing shapes and transitions.  I do think Derek was right in his claim that more couples = more interesting patterns.  It can be a good thing, if you can manage to get everyone in synch and on time…and I think that last thing is the real challenge.  I would hearby like to dub Roshon the MVP of Team Tango – the boy was a revelation tonight.  He came out with such determination and attack, and he KILLED his solo on Team Tango.  Zero mistakes, 100% commitment, 100% attack.  Bravo, Ro! Hell, I would even go so far as to say that he was the overall standout in terms of both teams – he was really the only one that made me sit up and go “WHOA!!! Where did that come from???!”  As for Team Paso – I thought they had the more exciting piece of music and had more theatricality and drama than Team Tango, but they suffered in terms of synchronization and just overall cleanliness of their choreography.  I kind of anticipated those two problems, as they had the added challenge of throwing in a lot of open work that Team Tango didn’t really have to worry about.  I loved the parts of the guys’ cape section that were actually in synch (which I must say is a pretty impressive feat), but the parts that were out of synch just kind of reminded me of my cousins playing Zorro as kids – it was a little chaotic. I could’ve done without the shirtlessness (more on that later), but I can’t say I’m surprised that they did it.  If I had to pick, I’d say Donald was the MVP of Team Paso – I loved how much control he showed in his solo, and his choreo was clean.  In the end, I’d say the scoring was just about right – I might have deducted a point from Team Paso, since the objective of the team dance for me is to stay in synch, first and foremost, and they seemed to struggle with that a bit more.

1.) Maria & Derek – I think these two were the only ones who managed to really OWN their individual dance tonight, and not get pwned by the song they were given.  I can’t say that I was wild about the vampire storyline (between Twilight, True Blood, Vampire Diaries, etc., I’m kinda over the whole vamp thing…), but they did make it work for them, and overall the choreography was clean, exciting, and a good representation of paso doble.  Did it deserve a 30? I think so…with all of the overscoring we’ve seen this season for dances that I thought were nowhere near as good as this paso (or at least had nowhere near as much content as this paso), I can’t say that I think the judges were too far off in giving it the first 30 of the season.  Given tonight’s spread, I think these two are safe.

2.) Katherine & Mark – I’m told their rumba was Game of Thrones-inspired, but as someone who does not have premium cable (and whose regular cable it only intermittently available these days – thanks again, AT&T!), I actually thought it looked more gladiator or Roman-y.  Whatever it was – I’m afraid the costuming made Katherine look kinda out of her element, and although I thought her legs looked FANTASTIC and she was at least flirting with some nice hip action, I never felt 100% commitment from her, and the routine never felt super romantic or rumba-y to me.  It tiptoed near being a good rumba, but never really reached it – and Katherine had another week of “deer in the headlights” eyes from time to time, I’m afraid.  I also have to raise a bit of an eyebrow to some creative camera work I noticed – seemed like they changed the shot so you couldn’t see Kath’s legs whenever they went for a move that might possibly get called out as a lift.  Possibly a “if the viewers can’t see it, they can’t get mad at Carrie Ann for not calling them out on it!” strategy? Who knows…but it just seemed a bit fishy to me, especially given a few other things I noticed tonight.  Overall, I think these two are probably safe this week – but I’m starting to see some cracks in her facade.  She’s not as flawless as the judges initially thought, methinks…

3.) Donald & Peta – This was the only other couple I thought really handled their piece of music well tonight, and I thought their “royalty at court” kinda theme was a cute interpretation.  Although Donald gave it a valiant effort and I did see some really good moments (especially when he was out of hold), he did seem to have some footwork issues (a problem all of the VW’s this week seemed to have), and I thought I saw him get off time once or twice.  Then again, it was hard to tell whether someone was on or off-time this week, as so many of the pieces of music had some wacky tempo changes.  I wish Carrie Ann could have just praised them, instead of bringing up some non-issue about a lift that she herself didn’t see but thought might have been there anyway (seriously? WTF??? Just score what you saw and shut up about things you didn’t!), but I think the judges were about right in their scoring.  I think Donald’s pretty safe, but I think he still has some work to do on his ballroom frame if he wants a shot at the finals… Read more..

DWTS Season 14 Stats Class – Week 7

Yay Week 7 aka Classical Week, and you know what that means? It means that later this week you’ll get my Predicted Scores Scorecard for the “Middle Third” of the season. Are you wondering what I mean by the “middle third” well… continue reading.
– First “Third”: Weeks 1 through 4
– Middle “Third”: Weeks 4 through 7
– Last “Third”: Weeks 7 through 10

And in case you’ve forgotten here is the post of how the “Age”, “Occupation”, “Professional Partner” categories breakdown.

Since this is Week 7 how does that affect the predicted scores since I have Week 7 in both the “middle third” and “last third”… simply that I will have individual average scores for the two thirds and average it out from there… I had a reason for doing this, because I did the same in Week 4, but for the life of me I forgot why… anyway… onward!

ROSHON FEGAN
Dance: Argentine Tango
Average Scores:
– Age: 23.667
– Occupation: N/A
– Professional Partner: 22.000
Predicted Score / Rank: 25 / 7th
Comments: Oh boy, in a dance where lifts are actually allowed, Roshon isn’t going to be able to take full advantage of that little nuance unless they pull some of the lower lifts like the pseudo one they did during the Rumba last week. The only Disney kids to have done the Argentine Tango were Season 11’s Kyle Massey (29) and Season 12’s Chelsea Kane (28), but they did the Argentine Tango in Week 9 which are in the “last third” of the season breakdown. Whether Roshon could get anywhere near that high is anyone’s guess, I’m hoping he can, but the numbers are telling a different story here.

MELISSA GILBERT
Dance: Argentine Tango
Average Scores:
– Age: 20.833
– Occupation: 24.333
– Professional Partner: 24.000
Predicted Score / Rank: 25 / 6th
Comments: Only Season 10’s Pamela Anderson has done the Argetine Tango and she got a 22 (actress in her 40s), what is also odd is that she has had a lot of 7-paddles up to Week 6 only to finally break the barrier in Week 7 (she’s had a couple more 8 paddle in her run up to the point, but the scores were roughly in the same area). So the trends seem to be rather similar between Melissa and Pamela in general. Maybe this would be Melissa’s week to shine like it was Pamela’s break out week? But would it be enough, since Pamela was voted off in Week 7 as well? I guess only time will tell.

DWTS Season 14, Week 7 – Who’s Dancing What…and when?

Well, another week, another set of dances.  I’ll be curious to see the running order this week, even though I don’t believe it means as much at this stage of the competition. Especially since the two team dances will either be first or last.  If they put them first and continue their trend of having certain celebrities in the last half of the show, I’ll cry foul again.  They are certainly doing everything they can for certain couples, while others dance in the first hour most of the time.  Maria, Melissa, Roshon and Jaleel have jumped all over the place, with Maria, Melissa and Roshon more heavily in the first hour. Donald has been in the second hour or the middle of the pack except for week 1. Jaleel made it to the second hour again last week likely due to having one of the better dances I’ve seen on this season so far. And that includes anything done by William or Katherine.

And that brings us back to our two favored children, William and Katherine.  The Royal couple. :::snicker:::  I do wonder if the British producers of this show see those two names and unconsciously pimp them or if they are just totally overt in wanting them to win and doing what they can to make it happen. 🙂 Katherine has actually danced in the first hour and has spent MOST of her time dancing at the top of the hour, which is also a good spot. William has never danced in the first hour. He’s the only celeb to get the pimp spot THREE times (and in 6 weeks, that’s pretty good).  I actually like Katherine, and William seems like an okay dude – but I can’t root for anyone who is so heavily favored at the expense of everyone else. Roshon got seriously hosed last week and Donald has yet to get a score that he deserves, relative to others – both are better dancers than William, IMO.  Never has this show felt more manipulative than it does right now. And why?

Maybe the ratings grabbers are going in the second hour??  Well, how do they know a particular person is grabbing ratings??  I don’t think they do, for sure, plus they MADE William into the ratings grabber – they pimped him heavily so that he got news, then that generated more news and hype – till he got the cover of People magazine.  I have to wonder if that was their goal all along.  Just the hype and “DWTS” on the cover of People magazine.  Actually, they did the exact same thing last season with JR – who was a very likable guy with a great backstory.  But not the amazing dancer that everyone claimed.  I’m starting to think that the producers see guys like JR and William and see people they can hype right on to the cover of magazines – which garners free PR for the show.  Yep, I’m cynical. 🙂 How can one not be with all the over scoring and dance duels and the double elimination coming soon?? And really, how long till it backfires and everyone sees the man behind the curtain?? This play for ratings is a plan with diminishing returns, IMO.

But I have to wonder…will they give William the first spot and put the team dances at the end of the show?? Because really, dancing the last individual dance isn’t going to be that good of a spot in the running order if they do the team dances last.  I will have to laugh, as I can hear it now – “William finally goes in the first hour!!”  Um, yeah, because he might get lost in the fun of the team dances….and we can’t have that. 🙂 I think I might even make that my guess…

ETA: SCORE!! Both William and Katherine in the first half of the show with the Team dances at the end…Team Paso going last. Gee, I’m so surprised. :-)

ETA 2: And after I hypothesize that going towards the end of the individual dances might not be good….we find Maria and Derek in the second to last position. At least Derek is excited about both dances….

Katherine and Mark – Rumba; Dancing 1st
Voting # 1-800-868-3410

Roshon and Chelsie – Argentine Tango
Voting # 1-800-868-3405

William and Cheryl – V. Waltz; Dancing 3rd
Voting # 1-800-868-3408

Melissa and Maks – Argentine Tango;
Voting # 1-800-868-3407

Donald and Peta – V. Waltz; Dancing 5th
Voting # 1-800-868-3403

Maria and Derek – Paso Doble; Dancing 6th
Voting # 1-800-868-3401

Jaleel and Kym – V. Waltz;
Voting # 1-800-868-3412

Team Tango:
Katherine/Mark
Maria/Derek
Roshon/Chelsie
Jaleel/Kym

Team Paso:
William/Cheryl
Melissa/Maks
Donald/Peta

If the running order ends up being something like that, above, then my money is on the team dances going last. If William is in the second half, again, then my money is on the team dances going first. They’ve only been first one other time, as I recall – Season 10?? Someone look it up for me. 🙂

I predict right now that Katherine gets a 30 this week – whether she deserves it or not. 🙂  William is tough. He’s doing the V. Waltz and Cheryl can’t sex it up.  Someone in the comments on another post predicted that the judges are going to start scoring him more realistically, and that they’ve shown signs of it already. I tend to agree with that. It will be interesting to see. I don’t think that the judges scoring always corresponds to the producer pimpage. The team dances?? Just on the face of it, Team Tango looks stronger. Not just because they have Derek, but because that team seems to have the better over all dancers. But they are handicapped by having four couples instead of three. Maria’s injuries also appear to be getting worse, so she might be an issue. Frankly, I wonder how much longer she can go on.

I’ve read that the dance duel this week (spare me the agony of another of these horrendous things, please) is rumba, although Wiki says Salsa. Either way, it’s guaranteed to suck, big time. No matter who’s doing it.

I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)
