Derek Hough Honored at the Emmy Choreographers Panel

Normally I don’t respond to petty complaints from fans when their favorite (who, ironically in this instance, is also MY favorite) isn’t getting the coverage on this site they think their favorite deserves. Come on, people. I also normally wouldn’t go backwards in time to pick something up that I neglected to cross post the first time around (I think – not even sure). But in this instance, I saw a tweet this morning that made me decide that I needed to go back to this topic. As a Derek fan, this actually brought a little tear to my eye. πŸ™‚

Back on November 1st, the Emmys had a program called “The Choreographers – Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”. They had invited Derek but, prior to getting injured, he had a conflict. Once he got injured they added him back to the panel, which also included Nappytabs, Dancer/Fred Astaire’s Partner Barrie Chase, Robyn Astair, Marguerite Derricks, Keith Young, and Fred Tallakesen. Paula Abdul and Kenny Ortega were the hosts. Very nice words about Derek from Paula and Kenny (who told Derek that he would push his way to the front of the line to work with Derek on a Major Motion Picture). I’ve put just the Derek portion below, but if you want to watch the whole thing, which includes several clips of little seen Fred Astair dances – I never knew he had a TV show! – you can find it at the Emmy’s web page. It’s about an hour and a half long, but it’s pretty interesting.

Pure DWTS Random Talk On Mel B, Brooke Burke, Corky Ballas, Madonna, And The Super Bowl

Just some random reportings today on things related to dancing and Dancing With The Stars!!

First up, join us in congratulating Spice Girl and Season 5, 2nd place winner Mel B as she has been signed on to co-host the Australian Version of Dancing With The Stars. Below is a take from Adelaide Now with a quote from Mel B confident that she can pull the job off. We wish her much luck!

“To have the opportunity to host Dancing with the Stars is great, as I know exactly what the contestants will be going through,” she said.

“To be honest, I’m just really looking forward to this year. I feel like it’s going to be my Aussie, Sydney year. I also hope to get my (Spice) girls out here.

“Emma (Bunton) and Victoria (Beckham) have new babies. As a group we’ve only been here two days, so we never got to really experience it and I’ve been telling them how fabulous it is out here.”

Speaking of co-hosting, there has been some chatter here, around the internet at various places, and at twitter about Brooke Burke possibly not co-hosting next season’s Dancing With The Stars since she tweeted about some disappointing “crazy Hollywood Industry” news which hit her hard this past week. The tweets lead many to believe it had something to do with her losing her co-hosting job. Well, with two tweets similar to the first tweet below within 8 hours apart yesterday along with Tom Bergeron addressing her as his “partner” in reply, I think it’s safe to say her job is safe?? Then again, who knows? The Hollywood Industry is indeed “crazy”. Look what happened with Steve Jones, Nicole Scherzinger, and Paula Abdul on the X Factor this week. Never did I think they’d be let go in such a fashion and so soon. 😯

Moving on! Give it up to Dancing pro Corky Ballas!! He’s been recently helping Olympic ice skating hopefuls Maia and Alex Shibutani on their choreography since last year’s world championships in which they finished third in just their first season as senior skaters. Below are some takes from ESPN. Be sure to read the link in full as they write about how costume designer Randall Christensen helped them with their costumes as well.

The Shibutani siblings got in touch with Corky Ballas through their agent, using the Yamaguchi connection, and headed to Los Angeles to begin working with him after the worlds last summer.

“But we are the first skaters he’s worked with in a while,” Alex, 20, said. “Obviously with his background, his son, Mark, and Derek and Julianne, we were honored to work with him. He’s such a fun guy to work with. It was an intensive boot camp-style Latin training with him. He’s kept up with our performances. He thought we could use a breath of fresh air.”

The coaches had high praise for the Shibutanis’ performance.

“It was awesome, awesome,” Zueva said. “All the changes worked really well. Most Latin dance movement is very sharp off ice, but it totally disappears on the floor because the surface is different. [Ballas] found them the best movement on ice.”

They worked with Ballas again in Detroit after the ISU Grand Prix Final, where they finished fifth. Alex said they have gotten “really comfortable” with the Latin style, a break from their usual, more classical style.

“The new program is much more exciting and a much stronger vehicle for us,” Alex said.

Lastly, if you are a fan to dancing in general and huge dance productions, be sure to tune into the Super Bowl halftime tonight. According to the New York Post, Madonna will be dancing, performing and singing 3 classics: Vogue Vogue - Celebration , Ray Of Light Ray of Light - Ray of Light with Holiday Holiday - Madonna mixed in it, Like A Prayer Like a Prayer - Like a Prayer , and her new, hot single Give Me All Your Luvin Give Me All Your Luvin' (feat. Nicki Minaj, M.I.A.) - Give Me All Your Luvin' (feat. Nicki Minaj, M.I.A.) - Single from her new MDNA album Give Me All Your Luvin' (feat. Nicki Minaj, M.I.A.) - Single - Madonna . I wanted to give this a special mention since number one, I’m a huge fan πŸ™‚ and, number two, Madonna did a Salsa in challenging Dancing With The Stars rumored contender Victor Cruise at a press conference on Thursday, and number three, Nappytabs has been helping with the production of it. As you know they’ve helped with choreography on Dancing With The Stars among many other dancing accomplishments in their career. They are also currently helping Derek Hough with his new movie Cobu3D. Below are some tweets Tabitha shared about rehearsals.

Yes, can you tell I’m excited? πŸ™‚ Be sure to let us know your thoughts and here’s to a fun Super Bowl Holiday!! xxx

UPDATE: According to Madonna website Madonnarama, the Ray of Light and Holiday Mash-up has been replaced by Music(ft. LMFAO – β€œParty Rock Anthem/Sexy and I Know It” Remix). Also, there will be an
β€œOpen Your Heart/Express Yourself” interlude to transition from Give me all your Luvin’ to Like a Prayer. Madonna has tried to keep the final setlist a secret as long as she could.

DWTS Derek Hough And Nappytabs Become Official Board Members Of The DizzyFeet Foundation

Take a look at these two tweets below. Derek Hough and Nappytabbs (choreographers that help with So You Think You Can Dance and who helped with Derek’s new movie, Cobu3D) announced they are official board members of the DizzyFeet Foundation. The DizzyFeet Foundation was founded in 2009 by Nigel Lythgoe, Adam Shankman, Dancing With The Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba, and Katie Holmes. Their mission is “to support, improve, and increase access to dance education in the United States.” In doing so, they help to “(1)provide scholarships to talented students studying at accredited dance schools, studios, or institutions; (2)establish national standards for dance education and an accreditation program for dance schools in all of the major styles of dance; and (3)develop, provide, and/or support dance education programs for disadvantaged children through and with local community organizations”. As Heidi said privately, what an “interesting venture” for Derek to take… and a ‘giving back’ one as well!!!

In other Derek things, don’t miss visiting Pure Derek Hough when you get a chance. Heidi has posted some more Cobu3D instagrams of Derek. They are so good, they are iconic in my opinion!

DWTS Season 12, Week 7 – Who’s Dancing What…When?

Ah, time for the Team Dancings once again. πŸ™‚ I usually like the team dances…we’ll see if this season holds up for me.

Also, once again, we have a random assemblage of dances which I assume is due to the stupid-ass theme weeks they keep foisting on us. This week it’s “Ballroom Greats” or some such thing. Hey, here’s an idea!! How about we have a week (or several) where you give the couples actual songs that go with the actual dances – and then everyone dances. Preferably one of two dances on a given night. How’s that for a “theme”?? :::rolls eyes::: We should be so lucky. I think once they start down the road to stupid, it’s hard to do a U Turn.

Anyway…who’s dancing what?? Oh, and I’d like to thank Louis Van Amstel for his big mouth and sharing “Team Ham” with us. πŸ™‚

Ralph and Karina – Quickstep
Voting Number: 1.800.VOTE4.08

Kenda and Louis – Tango
Voting Number: 1.800.VOTE4.07

Chelsea and Mark – Paso Doble
Voting Number: 1.800.VOTE4.01

Kirstie and Maks – Jive
Voting Number: 1.800.VOTE4.11

Kirstie and Maks had fun up on stage at the Prince concert last night:

Romeo and Chelsie – Samba
Voting Number: 1.800.VOTE4.05

Chelsie with her family after rehearsal yesterday:

Hines and Kym – Tango
Voting Number: 1.800.VOTE4.03

For some reason, Louis called his Cha Cha team Team HAM. Why this makes sense, since the team consists of Hines/Kym, Kendra/Louis and Kirstie/Maks, I don’t know. Someone want to clue me in? πŸ™‚

That leaves the other team consisting of Ralph/Karina, Chelsea/Mark and Romeo/Chelsie. Well. I dunno, based on choreography, I have to go with Team Ham – and I’d be okay with that, if we could switch Ralph with Kendra. πŸ™‚ Based on past team performances, I just think that Maks, Kym and Louis have the edge, even if they don’t have the “best” partners, other than Hines. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how the judges are feeling this week and if they’re smoking high grade stuff or not. πŸ™‚

As for the individual dances? I think Romeo and Hines are probably in good shape. Chelsea and Ralph probably are also, although more Ralph than Chelsea. I have a hard time seeing smiley Chelsea in the the passionate Paso. Kirstie and Kendra? Oh dear. For different reasons. I know it’s very hard to remember that Kirstie Alley is 60 years old, but 60 she is – and the Jive is hard. Kirstie is way older than me and I don’t know if *I* could do the Jive for 90 seconds. I’m hoping that several weeks of dancing has increased her stamina. As for Kendra – well, she’s a wild card at this point, but I think it’s safe to say that she better pull it off or she could be in trouble. But a Tango? Man…can’t see this one either.

There weren’t many (any?) pictures of the couples competing this week, so I’m doing a little update on those no longer on the show…for one reason or another. πŸ™‚ Derek had fun at the UFC Fights in Toronto with some of his gang from Cobu 3D, including Allison Holker from SYTYCD and Napoleon of Napoleon and Tabitha who are two of the apparently several choreographers on the movie.

And I couldn’t resist this picture of Julianne and her babies in Miami for filming “Rock of Ages”:

Anna and Jonathan at the Race to Erase MS event the other night. Anna commented that they looked like they were at prom. πŸ™‚

WOW – she looks AMAZING.

And you all recognize this lovely lady – Edyta Slwinska with the Willmington Baseball team’s Mascot; Edyta threw out the first pitch, apparently.

Guess which dancing family this little one belongs to. It’s all in the eyes… πŸ™‚
