LIVE BLOG is happening here, which is where all the pros will be added as it happens.
Well, a lot has happened since I last wrote one of these posts. In fact, I normally post pro watch for the spring season in early February – yet here we are. Why? Well, Derek is taking a season off to star at Radio City (looks so happy he may never come back), Cheryl appears to have retired from DWTS and is moving on to a different (reality-based?) show, and Val and Sharna are both blabbing about the next season. And as of last night, Karina is OUT. Hell, I had this post scheduled for tomorrow and here I am posting it today – ya’ll gotta have somewhere to be sad about Karina. (ETA: Vogue was at last night’s show and came away with different and new info re: Karina. Stay tuned.)
In Sharna’s case, I think her hint means she’s definitely IN – after last season I don’t think she would be coy if there were any doubt. And if there is doubt? Bad move, girl. As for Val – I don’t think there’s any way in hell he won’t be on, with Maks and Derek gone and Mark making noise. No way. And he’s saying yes, he is back. Read more..
I'm a nerd and proud of it. Two degrees in geology also means I love BEER. :-) I'm also a Derek lover - proud of that too. So don't scream at those of us on this site and call us a bunch of "biased Derek-lovers" - it's just ME. :-) It may sound like I hate DWTS at times, but really, I'm just a snarky nitpicker from way back. And I'm cynical and jaded too. But I do love DWTS. :-)
Yesterday, we told you a little about the “state of the art” light show in the Dancing Pros Live Tour. Well, if you head to Live Design Online, you can read a fun article on the Dancing With The Stars Live Tour and how lighting designer Butch Allen put it together so it would fit in one trailer.
When you have only one trailer for a high-profile tour, every fixture you load into it had better count. Butch Allen, the 2014 Parnelli Award Lighting Designer of the Year who has toured with a long list of superstars from Van Halen and Jennifer Lopez to Metallica and Usher, demonstrated this principle in stunning fashion recently when he created a maximum “bang for the inch” rig for the sold-out Dancing With The Stars Live! tour.
“We had to fit everything – and I mean everything — from costumes and props to the show’s famous mirror balls into a single trailer for this tour,” said Allen. “Ray Woodbury of RK Diversified Entertainment did an amazing job helping me put together a rig that delivered all the lighting punch we needed, while not taking up an inordinate amount of space in the trailer.”
The “workhorse” of this rig, according to Allen, was CHAUVET Professional’s Q-Wash 560Z-LED, a high-output moving head wash powered by 91 3-watt RGBWA LEDs. “We have a lot of great fixtures in the rig, but the Q-Wash is the light that stands out,” said Allen. “It’s the workhorse and the ‘lighting star’ on the Dancing With The Stars Live! tour hands down.”
There are a number of features that made the Q-Wash 560Z- LED an ideal fit for Allen’s Dancing With The Stars Live! rig. “The color rendering and optic zoom range on that light are awesome,” said the LD. “We’re using only 18 of these fixtures, yet we’re completely covering a 50 foot by 30 foot stage with just about every color imaginable. Plus since the fixtures are so light (21.2 lbs.), we have no difficulty hanging them from house pipe at different stops during the tour.”

Keo Motsepe, Kym Johnson, Witney Carson, and Alfonso Ribeiro of the Dancing With The Stars Live Tour did a segment on Good Morning America today. They were interviewed and they danced too (Keo & Kym’s dance took my breath away!). They also showed some behind the scenes coverage with Melissa Rycroft from the Nashville show and some dance clips. Thanks to @idolxfactor1 for being so speedy with getting this video to us. Be sure to follow him at twitter!! Photo above courtesy of @GMA twitter.

The Wall Street Journal reviewed the Dancing With The Stars Live Tour. They saw the show this past Sunday.
Speaking of music, the audience was treated to the musical stylings of some of the pros, including Ballas on guitar with Dylan Chambers and Chmerkovskiy on violin. Carson had her own cute musical moment involving an instrument nearly the size of her entire body.
Ribeiro and Carson said audience participation would be a component of the tour, and Sunday didn’t disappoint. Chmerkovskiy made the life of the preteen girl behind us by dancing with her in the aisle, and Johnson coached some husbands and sons in the art of dance. On stage. With props. (At the other Red Bank show, Chmerkovskiy danced with the father of Season 19 runner-up Sadie Robertson. What will NYC bring?)
With the elimination of Tuesday’s results show, we lose the opportunity to see the pros dance together except in giant group numbers or 15-second bumpers around commercial breaks. The tour gives audience members the chance to see the pros in different pairings, with the most-common ones being Ballas/Carson, Chmerkovskiy/Slater and Motsepe/Johnson. (This would seem to be for height reasons.)
After several seasons with conservative partners such as Robertson and Candace Cameron Bure, Ballas let loose in a funky, steamy love triangle with Carson and Chmerkovskiy set to Ed Sheeran’s “Don’t” just after intermission. And producers, can we PLEASE get Slater a young, decent dancer as a partner for Season 20? She had chemistry aplenty with Chmerkovskiy in a samba, Farber in a jive and Motsepe in a contemporary-like rumba (the latter accompanied by Ballas and Chambers with an acoustic version of the Cure’s “Love Song”).
Some things you can’t appreciate as well on TV include the muscle definition, especially in the ladies’ legs; the circular fans pointed up on stage to make the women’s hair blow around sexily when they’re performing (Ribeiro had an entertaining moment or two in front of one of them); and famous people in the audience — we were across the aisle from former Chmerkovskiy partner Sherri Shepherd.
Chmerkovskiy, who is Ukrainian-born but grew up in Brooklyn and currently lives in New Jersey, said this segment of the tour was like coming home. He told the audience that while people in Los Angeles can’t ever place his accent because they know he’s from another country, they can’t figure out the Jersey piece. “I’m Russian, but we all sound Italian – how you doin’?”
After Sunday’s entertainment, we’re doin’ just fine.
More at the Wall Street Journal .
In other tour news, it appears Janel Parrish will not be doing the tour after all.
And finally, how about a new video below by Sasha Farber? This is so fun…

Awww, this is such a great interview with That’s Your Reality and pro Keo Motsepe! I wish we heard more from him. What a big and gentle heart he has and so humble and thankful to be dancing. I love what he said about Emma and what happened after their Rumba on tour…
Also, Cleveland.com interviewed Val Chmerkovskiy. In the take below, Val talks of the differences between dancing live on the show versus the when he dances on tour. Be sure to read the link for the full interview.
“The live show is awesome. It’s very interactive for both us and fans of the show, who can see us live and get more of a sense about who we are and even ask questions. . . . So many times, a fan will come up to me and say, ‘You inspired me to get up and dance and do something with my life.’ ”
As an artist, Chmerkovskiy says the live format is inspiring to him, too.
“When we do the TV show it’s live, but there are times you have to be thinking about the camera, and to be honest, that’s not when I am my best. That’s why this tour is such a blessing. You get to be onstage and have this immediate interaction with the audience. The more energy they give ne, I give them back. You don’t get that reaction with a camera.
“For me, I feel like a superhero onstage. These are the people who made the show No. 1 in the world and gave me a platform, and I can’t wait to give them the best they’ve ever seen from me.”
That includes the shirt off his back.
“On a lighter note,” Chmerkovskiy adds with a laugh, “I take off my shirt during the show. A lot.”
